Plane tags question

I want to get a tag and use it as keychain… but how resistent is the paint? I feel like it wouldnt last me a week without completely chipping off or scratched off? I want a dc10 so i have the option for the American Airlines wich don’t have paint
FonsBot@reddit
Just buy a cover for your planetag or aviationtag
Those are 5 bucks each the covers
firstLOL@reddit
I have one on my “flight bag” (shoulder bag I use when flying) from a BA 747 and it has held up well. One side is the green primer you see on the inner shell of planes, and the other has (I assume) been repainted but is the historic BA deep blue. I haven’t had any chipping issues. It does make a bit of noise though.
Large_Carpenter_5582@reddit
Where did you buy it?, looking for BA 747 , thanks
firstLOL@reddit
I got mine from Aerotiques. It has the dubious honour of being the first and only thing I have ever bought off an advert I saw on Instagram, but it arrived and was a nice addition to my travel kit.
Shark-Force@reddit
If it’s the same company as OP I doubt it was repainted. I don’t think they repaint any of their tags, unless you’re talking about the plane itself having been repainted before being scrapped.
El_Mnopo@reddit
Yeah no way my SR-71 is going to clang against my keys unless I get one of those sleeves. I think these are meant for collectors items. Aircraft paint wasn't meant for friction/scratch resistance.
Flamin_Gamer@reddit
I got a crap ton of tags all from 3-4 different company’s that make similar style tags / products, my top 3 favorite companies are probably TransportTags, Motoart (the ones featured above in the post) and jeteyes
Jazzlike_Climate4189@reddit
I suspect they are just using regular aluminum from a cheap supplier
Coyoteh@reddit
They, as well as most other major tag makers, thoroughly document every step including the part where they cut the material from the actual aircraft itself.
Animal__Mother_@reddit
So you suspect they’re committing fraud then? Have you even seen or held their products?
flyingcanuck@reddit
They're also very loud.
It's clanging metal, gets annoying quickly haha
ManqobaDad@reddit
I dont have an issue with it being loud but i set mine up like this. Where its away from my keys. But they do get scratched to hell
ebs757@reddit
Dang I have the skin from that very tail!
ManqobaDad@reddit
Does that make us the equivalent of eskimo brothers but for an aircraft?
prex10@reddit
I feel like a dog with a bell on walking through the terminal.
I have two and they just clang against each other.
kayl_breinhar@reddit
They sell protective sleeves that mitigate this and protect the finish: https://planetags.com/products/planetags-sleeve
(they're just OOS right now)
No_Grav3ity@reddit
Definitely need the sleeves! I have 2 of these on my backpack and it's..... irritating walking through terminals with them.
10/10 would keep adding new ones tho!
magnumfan89@reddit
You probably can get dog tag silencers, I have some for a MedAlert, they work wonders.
mich341@reddit
I know when the stuff arrives at the carousel! They are ok when rolling the bag as they just sit on top of it.
iflysfo@reddit
Can confirm—my coworker has two on his bag and I can hear him cling clanging from the other side of our office 🤣
I myself keep mine nicely displayed on a cork board I stuck pins in
AirBoss87@reddit
Probably best for longevity to have it hang on something that isn't in frequent contact with other metals that could scratch the paint. I have one hanging off my ATC headset, I'd say they're pretty perfect for that.
ProofBank2260@reddit
I have one on my keys, the paint will scratch but it’s still cool.
weskeryellsCHRISSS@reddit
I just "laminated" mine with packing tape, and that keeps it in good shape and reduces noise too.
bitchcoin5000@reddit
The Ukrainians are making key chains out of the Russian aircraft they shoot down
ThrowAwaAlpaca@reddit
Wow that's cool. The other is cool but this is next level.
airbuxtehude@reddit
where can i get them?
Jazzlike_Climate4189@reddit
Google “Ukraine war plane tags” 🤦♂️
LeopardMoka@reddit
Ebay usually
InQuintsWeTrust@reddit
I’ve got a chunk of T-72 on my keychain right now. Right next to my Leatherman Micra and a key that’s been on my keychain so long I have no idea what it’s to
KittyCatGangster@reddit
I’ve got quite a few of them including several of the S-70 tags, guys behind them are Fuselage Creations, wonderful group of guys
Azurehue22@reddit
Where do I get one these???
MetikMas@reddit
aviationtag.com or planetags.com
Azurehue22@reddit
Yeah I figured out, I was just excited and not thinking xD
shadeyyyy_@reddit
Get one from aviationtags.com, they have some silicone rubber hulls and a lost and found service.
Fentron3000@reddit
Mine has held up for about 5 years.
Automatic_Education3@reddit
Oh nice mine is from the same exact aircraft. I've had it hanging off my backpack that I wear regularly since 2019 and it's pretty much in the same condition as yours .
Aeternus_AAA@reddit (OP)
Nice
Fentron3000@reddit
The primer side, not so well.
NastroAzzurro@reddit
Is that part where you hold your thumb?
Fentron3000@reddit
It was from rubbing against my key fob, before it had a silicone case.
FonsBot@reddit
You can buy a cover for it yk
GTOdriver04@reddit
The covers are the way to go for these. Stops the clanging and protects at least one side.
ewaters46@reddit
I have the exact same one and it looks just like yours - the paint is really resilient!
Cman1200@reddit
Mine has been on my keys for the last 3 years or so. I’m not super rough but I also don’t really ever think about it either.
Maybe its just SWA paint but barely any scratches
MohnJaddenPowers@reddit
I'm sorry, WHAT airline
memeboiandy@reddit
Just spray a coat of clear coat on it if you are concerned. Or if paint does start to scrape off, you can just repaint it 🫠 its a flat sheet of steel/aluminum after all
Go_Loud762@reddit
I've seen a few in the wild. The paint will definitely scratch off pretty easily.
I think they are more of a collectable than an actual useable product.
747ER@reddit
I believe they hold their value way better if they’re still in the packaging seen here. Once it’s taken out, it goes from a collectable to just a small piece of metal.
hawkeye18@reddit
So, Beanie Babies but for men, got it
Aeternus_AAA@reddit (OP)
Thank you! A.A it is then 😭😂
Go_Loud762@reddit
Remember: it is aluminum and without a clear coat or polishing it will dull with age.
Aeternus_AAA@reddit (OP)
I can polish it no worries
Go_Loud762@reddit
I'm talking about the key chain.
neverbadnews@reddit
Rule 34 finds a way. 🤦
verstohlen@reddit
If you're gonna quit drinking, American Airlines is the way to go, man. Doing what they do best.
mich341@reddit
I have a blue one and it’s in good shape despite a lot of flights. Kinda fun if there’s a plane you’ve grown attached to. A bit spendy!
Mauzersmash0815@reddit
Yo, i collect these and others. You can get the protective sleeve and it may help. Idk how planetags sleeves are. Aviationtag (a german manufacturer) has sleeves that cover the entire tag. Had mine on a bag for a long time and it protected very well :)
Signal-Session-6637@reddit
They hold up pretty well.
BobbyJackT@reddit
I have a DC3 one and have never had the paint chip more than it was when I got it. I keep it on my flight bag all the time. I also have the DC9 one which is non painted and has been great.
Trixieleigh@reddit
I bought this exact one for my brother for Christmas, wonder how popular each airline/model is?
DraftedButNeverSent@reddit
I have one from a 747 that a buddy got me as a groomsman gift about 10 years ago. I keep it on my backpack for work. It's in great condition still, but it does get annoying when it hangs just right against the zipper when I'm in the car and it rattles around.
I definitely wouldn't use it as a keychain though. I'd be afraid all the paint would be gone in a month from rubbing against my keys constantly.
Sour_Bucket@reddit
I’ve had one of these on my backpack for about a year now. It’s still in pretty damn good shape despite me accidentally banging it regularly against the seats and poles on my campus’ buses.
Old_Crow51@reddit
It will 100% wear down as a key chain. I dont mind however, it was a gift from my uncle that I cherish every day and I know it came from a B-25.
Enpl3x@reddit
That's sick but it might be loud when hitting something hard idk
studio684@reddit
You can turn into a magnet if they're not to expensive to modify
pigbearpig@reddit
Probably can't hurt to just go with the AA with no paint, but I've used the a Delta L1011 and MD-80 with blue paint for two years and the paint has not chipped nor worn off. I don't think I'm particularly hard on my keys, but I'm not trying to be careful with them either.
Live_Ad8778@reddit
Got one for all my bags. They've held up pretty well, now the one that had on my keys is a different story.
The_Challenger11@reddit
They sell protective sleeves that I'd highly recommend if you're worried about chipping and scratching. I have a few that 100% wouldn't run without a sleeve or use at all due to the paint.
dimmadouche@reddit
I have one of the Gimli Glider that I've used as a keychain for almost 7 years now. No paint loss on the front, but the back is starting to ever-so-slightly show some paint wear. I think it's character.
MissNashPredators11@reddit
Man these are sick. Waiting to somehow find a Black Hawk skin keychain 😆
rhit06@reddit

MissNashPredators11@reddit
Holy shit thanks 🔥
SwitchbackHiker@reddit
I keep mine as a collector's item.
Cake-Over@reddit
I got two, one white one blue, off of the Iron Maiden 747.
WhiskeyMikeMike@reddit
The one I got from Wyldebyrd art has barely any paint loss after 5+ years
