The warranty is 10 years for personal use, but only 2 years for professional (like every profession that would lead to surplus tradeins). They also don't honor their warranty to anyone but the original purchaser. So no matter what, you would not be covered.
Hopefully some better competitors with better warranty service will come about (like Vortex - they have a new one that looks really stout but is definitely pricey for them).

I’ll say that I bought an ACO from a guy on armslist and used it for a year or so before I broke the rheostat off the sight. I called Aimpoint and told them explicitly that I’d gotten it secondhand and that I was checking to see what it would cost to repair it. The guy let me get through about half my shpeil before he interrupted me (sounded like he just didn’t want to listen to the whole thing) and told me send it in, and make sure to write the return authorization number he gave me on every side of the box so it didn’t get lost. Probably took about 2 1/2-3 weeks, but they fixed it for free with almost no fuss.

It's really not, it is a very good warranty. Most consumer electronics have maybe a 1 year warranty or you can pay for... Two years. Cars warranty usually 3 years.
We are spoiled by companies like Vortex. Don't get it twisted that every company is obligated to cover everything for infinite time and through wear, use, and abuse.

I mean... there is no reason why anyone can't warranty something, that doesn't mean they are obligated to. It isn't a capability issue, it is a cost issue. It costs them money to receive something, disassemble it, replace parts, reassemble, and mail it back out. The replacement parts are by far the least expensive thing in that process. Labor alone could easily push that to over $100 they have to eat out of the goodness of their hearts.

I got a surplus M4S I bought in 2013 serviced last November for a broken rheostat - it was stuck on some high brightness setting and the adjuster knob no longer worked, the sight functioned fine otherwise.
They gave me an RMA number and fixed it for free with free return shipping, I only had to pay to ship it to them. I was also up front that it was a surplus sight and I wanted to get a quote on how much the repair would cost, they told me to just send it in.
If yours has issues (unlikely in the first place) there's a decent chance they'll take care of you regardless of the official policy.

The M4 has the battery compartment on the top right. The m4S has the battery compartment on the bottom right for better field of view. That’s about the only difference.

No, I worked with folks while I was in that had really close relationship directly with the vendors or became vendors. I retired and worked for an org that Aimpoint sees as one of their “priority” orgs, so I got hooked up just this once.
Did the process myself by sending them the info then calling them during a workday, made rapport with the guy who knew folks I knew, then processed the RMS. The Aimpoint CS is incredible and, if not free, it’s only $99 to unfuck many of the problems. $400+$99 still beats $800-1000.

Is it still $99 or so to fix issues if surplus that they normally wouldn't support for us civvies? I had my ancient eotech 512 that was draining batteries like it was its job and I sent it to them for $85 or so and they got it back to good as new. I'd seriously consider jumping on a surplus one of these if they'd still service it (even at minimal cost to me) but that runs contrary to what I've heard.
