Why is Toyota still making a 228 hp GR86 in the year of our Lord 2026?
Posted by InconceivableMarmot@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 121 comments
Toyota has confirmed the GR86 will keep its 2.4L boxer for 2026. The GR Carolla is making 300 hp for barely any more money and will soon get an upgraded 4cyl engine at an astonishing 400 hp if we believe what we’ve heard. Add to that the rumored release of a new MR2 sharing the same engine and I’m wondering if there will even be any appetite for this aging platform for much longer. I’m sure there are plenty of existing owners who would love to chime in to protect themselves from the embarrassment of admitting this was a bad purchase, but seriously, this platform is getting to “new Prelude” levels of unserious. Why keep the same engine?
sleve22@reddit
1) the GR86 increased in HP by almost 25, and increased in torque by 30ft lbs
2) the GR86 isnt meant as a fast car. It was intended for the experience
3) why would Toyota want it to interfere with the last gen Supra and the future Supra model
4) the 86 was primarily built by subaru
opportunptr@reddit
More fun to drive a slow car fast than driving a fast car slow.
vargemp@reddit
Slow car has 70 hp, not over 200.
Art_VanDeLaigh@reddit
Its not 1993 anymore. Regular Civics have 200hp now.
vargemp@reddit
And its not slow
Parking-Cow-2270@reddit
it's pretty slow
Training_Mulberry667@reddit
I guess if you don't know how to corner
Parking-Cow-2270@reddit
LoL.... Nice cope cornball... It's slow, is what it is. Deal with it or cope harder.
Training_Mulberry667@reddit
I don't need to cope, my self-esteem isn't tied up in inanimate objects. I don't even own this car, I have the slower first gen. It has no trouble chasing down "faster" cars with more power all the same.
Parking-Cow-2270@reddit
Yet, you still chirping little bird... Shhhh this not the one for you. Should probably move along. And sure... Chasing down cars going the speed limit probably is pretty easy regardless how slow.
Afraid_Pattern3706@reddit
Maybe you should just buy an M2 for double the price genius, lol
Parking-Cow-2270@reddit
OH HEY..!! ...No. Thanks for the submission from left field tho Timmy! LoL Can get multiple cars in the same range that will spank the breaks off that over priced turtle. Take care now... Genius, ;)
Training_Mulberry667@reddit
>linked video to track day
>brings up speed limit
Uhhhhh... yeah pretty clear the only thing here that's slow is you bud (in more ways than one if you can figure it out).
Parking-Cow-2270@reddit
LMFAO Bro... Why are you coping SO hard... No ones trying to watch your video cornball... Not tryin' to click your goofy link. Cars dogsh!t... It's slow.. your cars slow, you're slow... your moms slow for having you... Now shoo before I send a video link teaching your mom how to use the coat hanger properly so she can finish the job.
Afraid_Pattern3706@reddit
Yes, and its a 1.5l Turbo, and it costs the same if not a touch more than GR86/BRZ which has 228hp normally aspirated. So whats the issue? I mean they can put on a turbo, and bring it closer to 300hp, and charge you and additional 15k. Would you buy it? If you would then just go ahead and add one aftermarket for 10k. Will still be much cheaper than Type R, Supra, Golf R, etc
Parking-Cow-2270@reddit
There's multiple civics that are NA that produce the 200hp he mentioned. Thanks for chirping in late to the game tho champ. Issue is... if you read at all, which somehow it seems you didn't which is wild.... THEY'RE SLOW... genius. Have a nice day now.

bro wants 500 gorllion HP so brad could call him "a real man"
clout chasers can never appreciate a car for what it is
ddalene@reddit
All those saying it doesn't need more power have never actually driven something with power lol. The ONLY way I'd even consider this car is if it had 2 more cylinders. Even better if they were in a straight line.
Afraid_Pattern3706@reddit
Dumb comment. Ive driven 300hp sedans, 400hp Muscle cars, and 0-60 in the BRZ is about the same. Its called technology and light weight. Show me another car out there at that price range that can do 0-60 much better, lol.

There's so much more to a car than output. Cross shopped quite extensively and came from a platform with much more power. Still all smiles every drive.
InconceivableMarmot@reddit (OP)
There’s definitely something to be said about a good chassis. But I REALLY don’t think 320 hp or so would’ve turned the roads into a Mad Max movie.
colinshark@reddit
You're right
neptunepandemonium@reddit
It wouldn't have but it also would have added some cost to the platform. It also would have started making the supra less appealing but that's a business decision. Honestly the topic has been beaten to death since the first gen. That was legit under powered though, absolutely.
As an owner of the platform I can tell you a second gen as is with 320hp would be unbelievably hard to handle. They already break loose so easily with the power they have.
InconceivableMarmot@reddit (OP)
I guess I just feel like there’s kind of a big empty void in the market for a lightweight sportscar that makes 300-400 hp for less than 50,000. Mustangs are not the answer. I really think Toyota could do it. Maybe this post should really be about how overpriced the Supra is 😂
colinshark@reddit
You're right
Gunslingermomo@reddit
Nissan tried with the Z, turns out turbos and their cooling systems are heavy.
I don't disagree with you that the powertrain in the 86 is a little disappointing, the K20 in my RSX would be a similar weight and center of gravity with a lot more potential for power mods with bolt-ons. But it's harder for companies to put out high revving NA engines with emissions now. The 86 revs up to 7,500 and has more mid range torque so it's still pretty good.
I wouldn't trade it for a turbo though, even though modern ones have very little lag they aren't as satisfying to drive. The directness of NAs is something you miss when you don't have it.
LewdDarling@reddit
Cheap, powerful, and light are one of those things where you get to choose 2 out of the 3.
You're pretty much describing the 2.0 supra with a tune, and it did not sell all that well.
elantra6MT@reddit
Nissan Z? Dimensions are about the same but understandably it’s a heavier car which I imagine the 86 would also be if it made that much power
strongmanass@reddit
There's a void because that car wouldn't make much profit. By the time you've done the engineering work to keep weight down and add a powerful engine that can also meet modern emissions and added chassis rigidity for the lightweight car to properly support that engine and then done all the traction control work that would be needed for the power to not overwhelm the wheels you're north of a $50K asking price.
neptunepandemonium@reddit
That's fair!
Hnry_Dvd_Thr_Awy@reddit
Agreed. My Blackwing is a riot but it’s definitely got about a GR86’s HP worth of HP too much to be enjoyable (legally) on the street.
mydoortotheworld@reddit
Tired, tired talking point from like fucking 2013. Seriously? We got over this. And clearly you’ve never driven this car, nor understand the purpose.
colinshark@reddit
I'm still mad about the low power, the lack of turbo, and the tabs on the manifold right there, ready for an intercooler. They thought about it.
Afraid_Pattern3706@reddit
You can add a turbo and all the necessities for around 10k. It would probably cost the same or more if Toyota or Subaru did it from factory anyway, so whats the big deal. Or just buy a Supra, Integra Typs-S, Golf R etc for 20-30kmore (Cdn). Either way, what im trying to say is you get what you pay for. The GR/BRZ is basically the funnest car you can drive for the price its sold for (And maybe the GTI, and Si)
InconceivableMarmot@reddit (OP)
Have driven one. Found it to be pretty underwhelming
ezpz249@reddit
Then it's not the car for you. Plenty of other options in the used market that are suited towards your preferences like Mustangs and Camaros.
Salt-Improvement7239@reddit
I have owned the first gen, now the second with a turbo, previous to this I was a Silvia nut. I've drive many supercars. But the 86 plays an ace above them, much like the old Nissan Silvia. It can do so much more. I love seeing an S15 smoke out a Lambo.
The 86 is absolutely an excellent design, so many smiles per mile. While I have a turbo pushing 340hp and 400hp on hi/low boost, it's hard to really utilize the power. A strange paradox of fun, sometimes less is more. 250 to 300hp would be the sweet spot. Ah, but I always want more.
Regardless, the 86 second gen is one of the best cars in the world, on its stock power, the formula works. You can literally ring it out on the road in stock, it's so good.
honestly I don't get why more people don't own them.
No_Door_9897@reddit
Because 228 is actually a lot when you consider how light the car is. It has a better power to weight ratio than a v6 dodge charger.
Silent_Waldek@reddit
Wish only the interior can be at least 2015 not medieval times done by a few different artists.
Tyraid@reddit
I mean it’s a fine amount of power for this package.
Significant-Dog-8166@reddit
Here I am loving my 200 hp GT86 too. I'd take the GR86 in a heartbeat if they get the engine reliability sorted.
nukelauncher95@reddit
I did a lot of research into these cars before I bought mine. The reliability issues are really overblown. These engines have known issues, but if you're knowledgeable about them, you'll never have any problems. The biggest thing I've noticed when interacting with the community is nobody checks their oil. I think this car would have such a better reputation if Subaru just added an oil level sensor that told you when you're low.
Also, other things like the RTV issues and the oil starvation on high speed curves are very overblown too. Any car that had RTV clogging the oil pickup has already blown up 5 years ago. And the oil starvation thing is a genuine engineering problem, but it is not any concern unless you're basically running racing slicks and pushing the car as hard as possible. Even still, slightly overfilling the oil takes care of it under most situations. Although the Toyota GR86 Cup cars have a baffle welded in their oil pans, they also run a quart overfull. The extra oil is doing most of the work.
Don't be concerned whatsoever with reliability. You'll love the 2nd gen even more than yours.
Significant-Dog-8166@reddit
Cool! Well if 2026 has a special edition that looks better than mine I might upgrade!
Gunslingermomo@reddit
Probably have to wait at least another year, this year's special edition is the Yuzu yellow. The color is nice but not the best they've had, and I think the yellow stitching would grow old over time. They're really up charging on it, especially the body kits and quad exhausts which aren't really it. You're better off picking your own aero kit and exhaust if you want those, personally I like the quiet stock exhaust better than the aftermarket ones.
I'd say the Trueno was the best special edition, then the Hakone. The series purple BRZ is actually a pretty good color but it doesn't come with the tS upgrades unless you're in Canada. The tS interior is really nice, and the suspension has a little bit sharper turn-in and less understeer. The BRZ also has the benefit of having both throttle map options with the sport button since 2025.
dontkillbugspls@reddit
The yuzu is a 2025 model year, not 2026
Parking-Cow-2270@reddit
Imagine thinking you were saying something, just to realize you made yourself look like a dunce... Research before speaking... Thanks.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
The Yuzu is a 2026 model, not 2025. The Hakone edition was for 2025.
TunakTun633@reddit
As a track rat, I passed over the GR86 a few years back. But I just bought one.
There are some expanded-capacity oil pans now. Between that and using thicker oil, I’m now sufficiently confident in the car’s reliability.
Threedawg@reddit
I have 260-280 hp in a Fiero of similar weight.
Can confirm, you don't need more power for a street car at that weight. Its plenty
OtterCreek_Andrew@reddit
Not really. I shouldn’t be able to out drag race any car in my 7000 pound stock 2500 truck. Let alone a car sold and marketed as a sports car.
Tyraid@reddit
Imagine caring about straight line driving in a BRZ. It’s a drivers car
OtterCreek_Andrew@reddit
My drivers car is a 97 M3 — and it’s still out straight lining a BRZ. Nah man yall can cope all you want, it’s absolutely unacceptable.
Bonerchill@reddit
I compared my E36 M3 to the FR-S when new and it wasn’t the power that I found lacking- it was the entirety of the package.
The steering wasn’t as good. The balance of ride and handling wasn’t as good. The power delivery and engine character weren’t as good as an inline four.
Buying a GR86/BRZ as a second, fun car when the E36 M3 exists is pretty much admitting that you aren’t in it for the dynamics.
VladimirSteel@reddit
It'd still be a driver's car with another 80hp
NoAirBanding@reddit
Toyota builds an E85 Z4 and everyone wants it to be the Z4M
TwelveTrains@reddit
If all you want is horsepower, I don't believe you understand what makes this car great.
india2wallst@reddit
It's been discussed to death long long before here. Adding a turbo isn't possible because now the engine sits so low .they would have to raise the engine and the center of gravity as well. This ruins the whole point of the car.
It's a throwback car like it or not.
DJBscout@reddit
Firstly, you're focusing on the power number while completely forgetting about weight. The whole point of power is to move weight, and less weight means you need less power. The GR86 is only ~2800lbs, and that 228 HP is good for a 0-60 that's consistently ~6s if you're rowing your own gears. Unlike the first gen, it has a better P/W (and weight-adjusted torque) than a Miata. Almost the exact same P/W ratio as a VB WRX too, and I don't see people complaining about how horrifically underpowered that car is.
Secondly, the GRC is NOT "the same money" as a GR86. It starts at over 40k, while the GR86 starts at just over 30. You can cross-shop a brand-new GR86 and a Civic Sport Hybrid at the same price. Good luck doing that with a GRC. It's a smaller price increase to go from a GRC to a Type R or 400Z than it is to go from the GR86 to the GRC. And that rumored 400 HP unit? If it's true, than I guarantee you it's going to make the GRC heavier and more expensive.
I think you're underestimating the cost and complexity of even fairly "simple" changes. Subaru/Toyota already decided against dropping the turbocharged FA24F into the GR86/BRZ for the second gen. Even just that would likely require some fairly significant redesigning to handle the extra weight, space, complexity, and power of the turbo, while the NA variant of the FA24 almost drops straight in. The GRC's G16E-GTS? Forget about it. At best, you're looking at a total redesign of the front end, and realistically you're actually redesigning the entire car once you've handled all the implications of a new engine and drivetrain, likely costing hundreds of millions of dollars in engineering, retooling, etc. On top of all that, if they did it now, they'd have to get all the safety and emissions recertified, also costing millions of dollars. It's already a niche platform, and the added power wouldn't change that enough to actually justify the cost of doing so. When you adjust for inflation, the 2nd gen is actually cheaper than the 1st gen. I'm willing to bet that they were only able to do that because they kept development costs low.
Finally, POWERRRRR and straight-line performance is not the point of the GR86. It's the classic sports car formula: NA, RWD, comes in manual, and handles like a dream. Giving it a bit more horsepower while losing practically all of what makes it special would be an incredibly expensive mistake.
I have one and I love it. I cross-shopped with the Civic Si and Elantra N, and the GR86 absolutely stole my heart on the first test-drive. The EN was technically faster in a straight line, but it just didn't feel special or handle like the 86 did. (I didn't even get around to testing an Si because the dealers were asking for a deposit to even test-drive one, and I wasn't playing that game.) My 86 is absolutely sublime on the curvy, hilly backroads in my area. Even in my daily commute, rowing through the gears still puts a smile on my face.
The GR86 is outselling the GRC before you even factor in sales of the BRZ. It's doing fine.
The new prelude is getting panned because it has almost 10% less HP than the 86 while weighing over 15% more at an awful price. It has comparable performance to the 2013-era FR-S (which admittedly was a bit lacking), while being a FWD eCVT Hybrid, i.e. none of what kept the underpowered FR-S compelling. Oh, and it costs almost 50% more than a base GR86 does BEFORE you factor in dealer markups. Price-wise, it's competing with the likes of the Type R, Supra, and 400Z. The GR86 is mostly competing with the Civic Si and Miata. Totally different market, and it shows in public reception.
It's a great car, and in the real world the power is more than enough. It always puts a smile on my face, and I was able to afford it comfortably.
Safe_Presentation962@reddit
Because it's enough and it keeps it to a reasonable price range.
Gunslingermomo@reddit
In the last 3 years I've rented a Mustang, M4, WRX, Miata, Boxster, Z4, Civic Si, Nissan Z, GR86. The GR86 has some imperfections but it was the only one that when I started driving it I said to myself "oh shit, I'm buying one of these." My opinion hasn't changed since owning a BRZ for the last year.
They are just the best feeling driver's car out there. Some of the other cars were faster, but they weren't as much fun. And tires go a lot longer on them than any of the other cars besides the Miata. I've had no trouble keeping up with any car I've come across on my commute in the Angeles Crest, they aren't slow at all if you aren't driving in a straight line.
gavfung@reddit
What are your thoughts about the Z vs the twins? I had a Z for a year and really loved it. Might pick it up again or the twins down the road and would love to hear your thoughts esp on nvh and driving dynamics(obv there’s a big difference in power but I never was able to push the Z that much anyways)
Gunslingermomo@reddit
I'd put the NVH at the same level for both cars. It exists but did not bother me. It's noticably loud on some rougher roads but on most roads I think they're pretty quiet. The Miata and my RSX are both much worse. I think my BRZ is very comfortable for a 1-2 hour commute but for a road trip a bigger car would be better.
I didn't really get to test out the Z's handling as much as I would have liked to bc I rented it on a trip with my wife, but the steering was good and it had pretty good handling. I would rate the BRZ's handling as better but the Z was a not bad. While the Z handles slightly better than you would expect for a car of its weight, it still isn't defying the laws of physics. The BRZ feels more solid than you would expect for a car of its weight, but you still feel the lightness in its handling.
The Z had a ton of power which is always fun. But the delivery of the power was a little jerky. Out of the F82 M4, WRX, Z4, Si and Z, the Z had the worst turbo lag. It wasn't terrible, only about a second, but then a huge punch of torque would hit, so it was the hardest to manage the grip with the accelerator. The lack of a limited slip diff is noticeable.
The BRZ is quick enough most of the time. It has enough power to break the wheels loose in 1st or 2nd if you want to even with performance tires, and the limited slip diff and NA engine make it very easy to control when you do. Above 60 is when the lower power is a more noticable, but I don't mind it. In the Mustang or the Z, going from 60 to 110 happens really fast. Which is exciting but quickly followed by realizing you should really slow down and take it easy until the next time you need to accelerate. In the BRZ, you're on the accelerator longer, there's time to listen to the engine getting closer to the redline, it's a more intentional and less nerve-racking experience.
The Z was really impractical. That surprised me the most. I was expecting a trunk and there really wasn't one, just a shelf under the rear window that couldn't hold much.
I think the Z is a better base if you really wanted to build a fast track car. The BRZ would be a lot of fun on track, but it doesn't take well to power mods and so it'll never be quite as fast. The base Z has a lot of things you could do to make it really make it fast.
gavfung@reddit
Thanks for the mega detailed write up! That was very insightful
WorkerMotor9174@reddit
It would be cool if they added more power, but I'm not sure how you get there. A V6 wouldn't make sense for a $30,000 car, and a turbo is adding complexity/cooling needs that probably don't make sense in a car this size & price point either. Plus that's introducing turbo lag, making it sound worse and some other compromises too.
Toyota clearly wants you to step up to the Supra 2.0 if you want more power/a turbo. The ecoboost also exists. I think the biggest problem with the first gen was the torque dip, and that's been solved.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
The 2.0 turbo was dropped after MY2024.
Main_Hornet8676@reddit
You seriously think you're going to get a 400hp GR86 for 30k?
InconceivableMarmot@reddit (OP)
Would you be mad if they gave you an extra 70 hp? I’m not saying it needs to be “Just as big number as GRC” I realize that’s cave man logic. But it doesn’t feel like there’s any interest in improving the platform but they keep making it, and developing the CRAP out of the rest of their lineup
SirLoremIpsum@reddit
They did improve it significantly from Gen 1 to Gen 2 no...?
I fully expect there to be a Gen 3 coming in the future but Gen 2 only came out in 2021 so expecting there to be a significant refresh / new gen for 2026 is a bit premature imo...
Especially "oh well mid-cycle refresh ditched the 2.4L 173kw for a 1.6L 210kw for same price".
Would i be mad? no, not at all.
But I also think it's incredibly unrealistic to expect huge hp gains on what is very evidently a budget platform.
Tw0Rails@reddit
Yep. The newer boxer motor has significantly better power delivery across tge rpm band and this guy is crying about the peak number only.
Add a few days ago another 17 year old dumbass crying about the miata. These idiots are probably the slowest morons you would find in a go cart.
Main_Hornet8676@reddit
The 86 was always made on a shoestring budget, it's a miracle the car even exists as it is in its current state. No one else is selling a sub-3,000 pound, 2+2, RWD, manual coupe in today's market.
Mimical@reddit
The 86/BRZ and Miata really are pretty much amazing that we even have them starting with a 3 at all.

I’m sure we’d all ‘settle’ for 300.
thetimechaser@reddit
300 not necessary. 250-270 would be sublime and probably what we’ll get if they ever put the NA i4 in it
Ancient_Wisdom_Yall@reddit
Naturally aspirated, rear wheel drive, manual transmission. There's the twins, mx-5, mustang gt, cayman/boxster expensive editions and probably one or two that I can't think of that are wildly out of my price range. Complaining about this is wild.
InconceivableMarmot@reddit (OP)
True, but why can’t I say that this car deserves to get more power? I want more power. Is that wrong of me?
SirLoremIpsum@reddit
You can say that about every car you like!
But at a certain point you start changing what "it" is.
Give the GT86 the twin turbo V8 of the GR GT, price it at 350,000 bucks.
Give it the 3.4L V35A twin turbo V6! Price it at 135,000. Then you'll come on here going "why so expensive? Can get a porsche for that"
When you have cars that are inherently in the 'budget' classification you need to acknowledge that this brings certain limitations on what is possible from a power / drive train / comforts / features stand point. It doesn't sound like you have recognise that fact.
Who doesn't want huge power for small cost?!??!
I want a $35,000, 300kw, ultra reliable coupe too. but I live in the real world.
Everyones been gagging for more power for the 86 / BRZ since it came out!!
Do you think they haven't??
But they continue to sell in big numbers cause the HP is not the attraction for those cars and they are priced very appropriately. Increasing the cost will not make them as attractive to buy.
Ancient_Wisdom_Yall@reddit
Then buy a Cayman
Car-face@reddit
Why can't people say it doesn't need more power?
Shitting on people then playing victim is wild.
gaius49@reddit
There's really no good way to get that extra power though. If you keep the displacement, and stay NA, you'd have to rev a lot higher, and that would come with unpleasant tradeoffs. If you go with a supercharger, that's neat but it also comes with serious tradeoffs. Would you prefer a turbo with all the compromises that entails? You might think to increase displacement, but that's going to need a whole new engine if you want a big bump in displacement to make more power.
There's really no way to crank up the power without big costs or tradeoffs.
peaked-at-7@reddit
Why is this still a discussion? It doesn't need more power, for one, and you absolutely will not be getting more power without a price increase as well.
Some y'all need to get offline and actually go drive instead of circlejerking over brochure numbers.

The car has enough power for the platform. If you don’t feel like it has enough, then buy a Supra. If you really want to squeeze more power out of this platform, then you’ll be modding this car at a cost that makes the Supra look more attractive.
Choppa1987@reddit
I just dont get it. Toyota (in partnership with BMW) literally makes a higher horsepower light weight sports car in a turbo 4 or turbo 6 option. There's also the Nissan z and multiple FWD/AWD turbo options.
EpicLegendX@reddit
The GR86 is marketed as an entry level sports car that offers a more analog feel compared to a lot of other cars on the market. Its only direct competitors are the BRZ and the Miata.
People prefer it because it’s a cheap and capable car for the track, autocross, and joyrides.
For most people, a GR86 is plenty capable as long as you aren’t trying to do straight line pulls at the stop light.
Choppa1987@reddit
Sorry, probably wasn't clear. I was saying I agree with you and I don't get why people keep asking to add power when there are many other more powerful options available (including the supra). The Twins are a GEM in today's age (lightweight, affordable, rwd, manual, includes diff, extremely moddable, etc). They shouldn't change it.
AmchadAcela@reddit
Toyota up until recently had the Supra if you wanted more horsepower/performance. Why compete against yourself for a niche market?
InconceivableMarmot@reddit (OP)
I worry many of you have decided my post really says; “GR86 is bad and slow” I really don’t think that. I just think if Toyota is going to add 100 hp to the GRC in a mid-model refresh. Couldn’t they make the rear wheel drive, 2 door one be a bit faster? I don’t hear anyone complaining that the GRC is making too much power.
LewdDarling@reddit
The extra 100hp to the GRC is an unconfirmed rumor.
If we're trusting rumors then there's also one where they're going to ditch the Subaru partnership for the next generation altogether and make it in house or with Mazda. Might get a power bump then
Astramael@reddit
Yep, we have no hard information that even suggests that the GRC will get an I4. Or that the GRC will continue past the E210 model.
This rumour seems mostly based on people hating the G16E for totally made up reasons.

Speak too loudly and they’ll replace it with a hybrid CVT crossover with no buttons and a two-spoke steering wheel. Wrong car to be mad about in “The Year of our Lord 2026”. 228 horse or not I’m just glad they’re still making it.
InconceivableMarmot@reddit (OP)
Gross, fair point. I don’t dislike the car or want it to go anywhere. But it feels wrong that it isn’t being developed like the rest of Toyota’s lineup. I’m sure that’s in no small part to sharing an engine with Subaru though. Still, if that’s the case, why not just let Subaru keep making it and move on to their own stuff?

There's a rumor that they plan to work with Mazda for the third gen. If that's the case it's anyone's guess what they do with it, could be a 2.4 version of the Miata engine or their new inline 4 turbo.
It's doubtful that Subaru would continue the platform without Toyota though, I don't think the sales numbers and profit margins are there for it.
LaserGod42069@reddit
that rumor comes from Best Car Magazine, so it has no credibility
hoegaarden81@reddit
Why these cars don't have 275hp is beyond me. Pretty absurd honestly.
Gunslingermomo@reddit
They'd have to make a 3.0L which would be a completely different engine that they haven't developed. It would be a huge R&D investment for a low production budget car. I wish they would but completely understand why they haven't.
They would need to add a dry sump to make a more powerful version of the engine they have, and there are packaging issues with doing that on this car other than higher costs. They could maybe add 10hp with a better oil baffling and cooling system but without the dry sump, we'd see even more track cars bricking and it has a bad enough reputation as it is.

At 35k new I really don’t know how it’s a good value at all. I considered one years ago, but bought a vette instead.
They’re soulless econo sports boxes that are overhyped in online spaces.
I get that it’s light weight but like that’s all the car has. It was a boring experience, at least from the test drive.
Gunslingermomo@reddit
I've never gotten a good feel for a car on a test drive. That's why I rented a bunch of cars on Turo while deciding what to get. Taking a car around the block with a salesperson in it isn't really enough even if you get to do a few hard pulls on it.
SJHikingGuy@reddit
It doesn't need any more, that's the point. This Big D race to shove as much in there as possible is ridiculous. The car is fun, fairly nimble, and lightweight compared to most other monstrous sedans, SUVs and pickups. Let it be what it is.
ayyitzTwocatZ@reddit
It’s a car that’s packaged as an affordable weight balanced, nimble, and driver focused car. It’s not getting more power. If you want more power than get a car with more power, but then you’ll be losing what the 86 gives. To drive the car to its fullest down twisties.
PootyTheTang@reddit
it has one of the lowest centers of gravity out of any production car. i owned a brz for a while and it hugs the road like no other car ive been in. the horsepower is good enough
HiTork@reddit
I get it was a different era, but once upon a time, a 5.0 V8 Mustang was throwing down that much power. Yeah, in a world of relatively affordable 400+ hp cars, 228 hp doesn't seem that much, but it's not like it is making first-generation NA Miata horsepower. Heck with regards to the current Miata, it is still more powerful and breaks the 200 hp mark at least.
Area51_Spurs@reddit
It’s also way lighter and more nimble than a Mustang
Area51_Spurs@reddit
What is everyone doing that they need to be going 0-60 in 4 or 5 seconds or less???
I had a Z4 coupe and a GTI before and drive a fucking Leaf now. Even in my Leaf I’ve never had a single moment where I’ve needed to be in a faster car for any reason.
I’d much rather value the driving experience and road feel than pure speed when I buy another sports car.
I’d take a lightweight car with lower output that isn’t going to set any records in a straight line over a 4500-5000 lb beast with a thousand horsepower any day.
AbundanceLiberal@reddit
You clearly don’t “get it” and it just isn’t a car for you. And that’s ok. It’s not really my cup of tea either but many people love them and they fill a classic niche in the enthusiast market.
They also fly off dealer lots so they’re accomplishing their main goal of being commercial successes.
RoyShavRick@reddit
I can't believe this talking point since 2013 is still being harped on.
It has like Golf GTI/Civic Si level power and (less) weight in a sports car package. That's what it's always been. It has like no competitors aside from the Prelude
JPlazz@reddit
If they make the GR86 have more power it runs into competition with the Supra. And the GR86 is like the only competitor to the Miata.
datums@reddit
That much power with good throttle response, low center of gravity, a real transmission, RWD, and less than 3,000 lbs - it will feel like a go kart compared to almost anything else out there today.
Add reliability, slow depreciation, and enough room to make it a workable daily for someone with only one car.
We're past the days when you can make a fun sports car by repurposing the supply chains that make affordable mainstream cars.
Safar1Man@reddit
Boost it if you want more power then mate.
JoyRydr@reddit
The whole appeal of the GR86 is that its as close as you can get to an analog back to basics sports car for the masses in today's age. What it's best at is something you can't really see on a spec sheet (well besides RWD + manual transmission lol) but when you drive one, it just clicks. Besides if you want more power, Toyota will sell you this thing called a Supra lol.
pmmeuranimetiddies@reddit
I get that one of the expectations for a newer product is bigger numbers but 228hp is actually a very good amount of horsepower all things considered.
The OG muscle cars were making about that much. It's enough to have fun, and enough for an unskilled driver to get themselves in trouble.
MisterDoctor___@reddit
MR2 will be the price of a Supra, if not more. Doesn’t matter if the Corolla has more power, it’s not RWD. That alone makes it not as appealing to plenty of drivers despite the power gap. Drivetrain matters. Only people who don’t actually drive would only think of power.
yobo9193@reddit
Because Subaru barely knows how to make a functional engine, let alone a high revving N/A engine?
RIF_Internet_Goon@reddit
Its fast enough for rookie/entry level drivers and with enough aftermarket support you can make that 400 hp...
yobo9193@reddit
I mean, it’s fast enough for advanced level drivers as well. If you’re serious about HPDE, you have to come up with reasons to NOT get either this or a Miata
Super_cooper001@reddit
Driven it before. Plenty of power feels fast enough especially redlining it
ohnosevyn@reddit
Because it’s a Subaru lol
