Curious what locals think beyond the grid road jokes.

Curious what locals think beyond the grid road jokes.
nmlsk@reddit
I love all the green spaces, canals, forests, and such. I walk 40 mins to work and barely see a road.
On the other hand I do miss independent shops, cafes and all that you tend to get with a more traditional city centre.
Also I have to get to the train station tomorrow for 8am but earliest bus gets me there for 10am, lol. Useless. Have a car I guess.
nsx-y@reddit
there are sooo many independent cafes in central! only sad part is a lot of them get replaced by a new cafe after a couple years
Notagelding@reddit
Housing is not expensive if you can get a shared ownership property 😎
BestRequirement7539@reddit
I’m considering moving out of London because the high rent for a three-bedroom house is becoming unaffordable. I’m thinking about relocating to Milton Keynes, as I mostly work from home and only go into the office once a week, which I believe would be manageable from there. My main concern is my children’s education. They are currently in secondary school, and one will be starting secondary next year. I’m unsure about the quality of state schools in Milton Keynes, as the schools here in East London are quite good.
ricopicouk@reddit
Ousedale school just graded top 5% in the country for 6th form.
Grand-Composer68@reddit
But best move to Newport Pagnell if you want your children to geet into Ousedale!
RenegadeUK@reddit
Thats fantastic.
SlowScooby@reddit
I don’t have time to do the numbers for you, but it’s worth looking to see if getting a three bed in MK will let you have a mortgage with money left over every month. I did that. I hated the idea that rent is paying someone else’s mortgage.
kitaro316@reddit
In short yes.
I'm not even kidding, everyone outside the city is taking this piss whilst everyone in it is living in a walkable city full of green spaces and lakes, some the best shopping in the Midlands, big brands moving out of London, thriving independent food scene, great connections to London as well as minutes from spectacular countryside. I could go on. Even the roads and roundabouts are actually pretty good compared to the mess of other cities.
The jokes literally on everyone outside thinking it's bad.
MLC1974@reddit
...except MK isn't actually in the Midlands. I mean yeah it's close, but it's officially in the South East.
OleaC@reddit
The post office classes MK as south Midlands.
MLC1974@reddit
...but the government class it as South East. The Midlands is East and West. MK is part of Buckinghamshire which goes right down past Slough. The Midlands starts at Northants.
Ye_olde_oak_store@reddit
Lets just say that Milton Keynes is a weird place on the boarder of a lot of things. There is a world where we could have been a part of Northants.
MLC1974@reddit
It certainly is. South East officially, just a few miles from the East Midlands, a few more from what's officially East of England. "Local" TV from Norwich, the same police force as Reading gets, and the same ambulance service as Southampton receives.
Yep, it's an odd one alright. 🤔🤣
Firesequence@reddit
yes it sure is,
woods_edge@reddit
Honestly I’ve lived in worse places.
My best compliment I can give is that it’s very convenient.
sb_ryan@reddit
I really like it here, my grandad loved living here so much he wouldn't stop telling his mates about it during my nans memorial bless him!
It's so easy to get to London or anywhere on the M1 corridor from here. Lots of green space for the dog and our kiddo to run around.
Also, with the Universal Bedford project, it'll be a hopefully exciting place to be the next 5 years or so 😀
SHAWKLAN27@reddit
Dunno really since I don't use a car living in a place this car centric as been very cumbersome as the buses in this town is such a absolute joke for someone like me who lives outside the city centre. I admire the grasslands and walkways as I do love walking and all that but living here is quite costly has many stores share london pricing due to how close MK is, I hate it. I came from Norwich years ago which was very walk centric for me and had a more busy local and social lifestyle to it while Milton Keynes feels so disconnected and isolated but again that might due to me not having easy access to go to pubs and clubs without either walking close to a hour to my nearest one or using the unreliable bus services.Â
Work-ya-wood@reddit
It depends, if you compare it it Gaza city it may be an upgrade
antitrollpatrol@reddit
Lakes, green spaces, convenient shops and grid roads which help with traffic. I love living here / its central and green
nasted@reddit
Yes it is.
bubbles2691@reddit
Yes but you’ll need a car. And there are no good bakeries. You’ll have to be ok going all the way to london for a good croissant.
malumfectum@reddit
It’s fine. The biggest drawback is that it’s a bit boring. As drawbacks go, that’s far from the worst.
Fit-Cricket-8480@reddit
Why do you think it's boring? There's so much going on and so many facilities/activities I would never describe it as boring. Compared to nearby towns like Bedford/Northampton/Luton especially.
The only thing i think it's lacking is nightclubs/nightlife
Electrical-Role4006@reddit
what does boring mean to you? and what would you like to see more of? genuinely asking.
I never quite understood the comments about MK being boring. You can find lots of activities / hobbies / cuisines etc.
Fit-Cricket-8480@reddit
I've actually recently posted a blog post on this exact question! https://www.victorias-vintage.co.uk/2026/01/is-milton-keynes-a-nice-place-to-live-what-its-really-like-to-live-in-mk.html
In short... yes it's a decent place to live! I love living here. Anyone that says it's boring - what exactly more do you want? It's got everything except a decent nightclub but I don't think clubs are such a thing these days...
TheFirstKevlarhead@reddit
When I lived there I could go out and do a circuit of the entire city by bike, without ever going on a road. Just parks and cycle ways and green spaces.
I can't think of anywhere else in the UK where that's the case.
purpl3un1c0rn21@reddit
I miss this the most about living in MK too. I love cycling but I hate cycling on roads. I used to be able to do north of 40 miles with no more than a mile of road in the whole thing.
PubLogic@reddit (OP)
40 miles mostly off-road is impressive. That kind of infrastructure is rare in the UK.
purpl3un1c0rn21@reddit
Yep it is incredible and I miss it dearly. I was working up a 60 mile course, had to worm through the estates a bit more but still barely any road. Unrivalled anywhere in the UK as far as I have found.
strawberrymud1@reddit
Can you send a route please?
purpl3un1c0rn21@reddit

40 miles: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/311757086
50 miles: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/313799296
PubLogic@reddit (OP)
That’s actually such an underrated feature. Being able to cycle that far without dealing with traffic is a huge quality-of-life win.
TheFirstKevlarhead@reddit
It makes the barrier to exercise so much lower when you can simply grab your bike and go 50 yards to the nearest redway.
I got in the habit of doing a casual 16 mile ride every evening in the summer. There's so much less planning and thought and stress needed when you don't have to think about sharing space with cars and buses and HGVs.
strawberrymud1@reddit
Compared to the big places near? Luton, Bedford, Northampton, it’s a great place to live.
ashman19871987@reddit
After living in Milton Keynes. Anywhere else you go is terrible for traffic. Even in rush hour. You can cross the city in 30 mins! I love it here. I'm 38 and moved here when I was 4. I wouldn't want to move away. There is so much space, nice parks and quiet estates.
RumJackson@reddit
I lived there for about half a year. Decent place to be for that amount of time, but I got the impression if I was born and raised there I’d have been on the first train out as soon as I turned 16. Some people love it, but it’s personally not my kind of place.Â
Quickswitch79@reddit
I moved here from London nearly 8 years ago, no regrets. I really love it here. As others have said, loads of cycle paths across the whole city, loads of parks, lakes etc all within a few minutes wherever you live. All the shops you could possibly need, loads of local sports.
Only downer is if you don't drive, then getting from east to west takes over an hour on the bus as they all go to the city centre first and not just straight across. They are talking about a tram system in the near future though.
I regard this as my lifetime home now, I love it here.
fuzzbook@reddit
Yes. Don't listen to the people who have probably never been here
OK_Cake05@reddit
A very convenient and comfortable place to live. Not flashy or sexy but London/Birmingham are 30-60 mins away. Great places
ZinaDomina@reddit
I would say its ok as a temporary life living area. Its incredibly functional and each place has a purpose. However I find it lacks the organic community feel sometimes. Central mk is built very American like and other than the shopping centre or camble park, there isn't really anywhere to just pause and exist. I live here for convenience of London job, but hope to move out eventually
RadicalDog@reddit
Upvoting for sharing a valid perspective, even if personally I like it more.
Silbylaw@reddit
There are nice areas. There are areas where it is not safe to be a lone woman at night. Or a lone man for that matter.
There are run down areas. There are areas where the people take pride in their surroundings.
The council is Labour run and is utterly incompetent. They waste hundreds of millions of pounds every year.
The roads are a disgrace, the redways are a disaster due to lack of maintenance. Stay away from the underpasses where the little darlings lie in wait for the unwary.
All in all it's the same as other cities but with lots of beautiful green spaces on your doorstep. ( Thank you, Parks Trust!).
Forsaken-Bluejay@reddit
This is such a ludicrously negative comment, it clearly demonstrates the poster’s own internal problems.
The green spaces are very well maintained and are a treasure for everyone, just ask anyone who uses them.
The redways are like nothing else in the UK - convenient, fun, extensive, and a joy to use.
Driving here is liberating compared to the rest of the UK. NSL arterial roads, good traffic flow, even rush hour is efficient.
As a regular late night walk home person, there are no dangers in the underpasses. Its remarkably safe for a place with so much quiet, empty space.
Whatever angry political views you have, there is noticeable development and ‘fixing of shit’. Way better than the vast majority of the country.
No offence meant personally, but this is such an incorrect portrayal of the place to someone who might just be curious.
Silbylaw@reddit
In the 12 months leading to August 2025, violence and sexual offences were the most common crime category in Milton Keynes, with 257 incidents recorded.
This represents a 12% year-on-year increase in this category. Despite these figures, Milton Keynes is generally considered one of the safer large cities in the UK, with an overall crime rate 21% lower than the national average.
While crimes occur throughout the city, reports indicate higher levels of violence and anti-social behaviour in areas like Woughton on the Green, while incidents sometimes occur in open, green areas like Campbell Park. Police have also highlighted the use of "Project Vigilant" to target potential offenders in the night-time economy.

Forsaken-Bluejay@reddit
Not really interested in an argument, thanks for asking. ‘Violence (I think you meant ‘violent crime’) and sexual offences’ have been on the rise across the UK, and it’s a serious problem that needs to be resolved urgently.
The post is about Milton Keynes, in a Milton Keynes subreddit. I’m sorry that you seem to be so resentful. But if someone who doesn’t know about MK asks about MK, the reality is more important than your attempts to spread anxiety and fear.
Out of interest, does the Kremlin pay you well? 😂
Silbylaw@reddit
I didn't mean 'violent crime'. That statement came "verbatim" from TVP. It's not for me to rewrite their statements.
I've never been to Russia. Certainly not the Kremlin. That was a poor attempt to make me look bad and is typical of somebody who has no rational argument.
Pitiful-Confection56@reddit
I got stabbed walking home from college when I was a teenager.
Your driving experience will change as they are trying to change all the 60 roads to 40, thus ruining the nice "flow" of the parts that are still 60 and not cornered in with the surrounding school. My side of mk is gridlock for about 2 hours in the morning.
Redways are good though I will give you that.
Pitiful-Confection56@reddit
No
skend24@reddit
I was looking to move away as soon as possible. I really didn’t like it.
Notagelding@reddit
Where are you from originally and why don't you like mk? Where do you want to move to?
skend24@reddit
I’m not from UK originally and before I lived in MK I’ve also lived in Leicester and Hinckley. And MK was by far the worst for me. I’ve moved to London and it has been by far the best decision ever.
Notagelding@reddit
Well, London is a slightly better city than mk 😂
GirlOnTheShelfSide@reddit
Anything I need or want is a maximum of 20 minutes away, and the grid road concept means that most housing developments are peaceful.
PubLogic@reddit (OP)
The 20-minute rule sounds appealing. Convenience plus quiet estates is a decent combo.
cflyssy@reddit
Not to everyone's taste but I like it. Perfectly decent place with plenty of good facilities, shops, transport links etc.
PubLogic@reddit (OP)
Not to everyone’s taste’ feels like the most accurate summary. It seems solid and practical rather than flashy
buttersnapsghee@reddit
Yes
PubLogic@reddit (OP)
Straight to the point 😂
ShiroYuiZero@reddit
I would say so, it doesn't have the hustle or coolness of London or the culture of Liverpool but it does have affordable housing, well maintained open spaces a lot of activities for families and young children and accessible transport. I think it would benefit from having a large university to bring students and sustain independent shops (families are happy with chains for ease), but that's not happening anytime soon.
mpr2009@reddit
Lived in the city centre for 10 years loved being able to get around to places quickly, loads of amenities, jobs and green areas on my doorstep. It suited me in my 20s with no commitments, I miss it but its a lot cheaper to bring family up in the north
Notagelding@reddit
I lived in Newcastle for most of my 20s. Had a great time there but I have a better quality of life back in mk.
NasserSenior@reddit
Yes. And it doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Could be better, but definitely decent.
winterproject@reddit
Yes, like anywhere it has its good and bad but IMO there’s many more positives
Zeratul_Artanis@reddit
Yes. Highly dependant on what you want from your life though
BillPayers@reddit
Decent is a fair enough description.
Fresh_Direction_7831@reddit
It depends on what you're looking for. It is functional and has good transport links to London, Birmingham and Manchester.
