It was definitely better. But it just had too much going on, especially multiplayer at the time. So many more weapons and places to go. It just wasn't as fun in story or multiplayer. I relate it to the game Total Annihilation personally. It was a PC game that blew StarCraft out of the water in every conceivable way, yet it was just too much.

DUDE so true! Back when the WWF was the biggest thing on tv. I used to have all these attitude era figurines and a ring and I would use Wrestlemania ‘00 to play all the different wrestlers entrance music and just do my own little matches at home (this was way before the first iPod came out…). I would have said WCW v nWo REVENGE, cuz it really was the game changer, but the character customization just took that to a whole new level and one of my favorites with so many hours. Replace Mario 64 with Mario Kart, and Perfect Dark should be replaced by StarFox. Mario 64 was ground breaking for its time but I think Ocarina is similar enough to cover that base. The only game I still see being played on the N64, is Mario Kart. I was at an event in LA and they had N64’s with only Mario Kart.

Yes, if you want to access all of the multiplayer features, you have to have an Expansion Pak. The documentation with the game estimates that you can only play about a third of the game without one.

Super Smash Bros was an absolute phenomenon. There were and still are big tournaments. Everyone knew who their character was. Everyone knew who was the best in their school. You don't need both Rare games- they were too similar and frankly PD had a sub-par single player (yes I know I'm going to get smoke for that opinion). I was in college in 97 and Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye were the only games that ever went into my system. Then in the room with the Playstation it was Twisted Metal. Eventually Twisted Metal had 4 players and that became the hot thing but Mario Kart 64 was still alive and well.

Lots of people saying Mario Kart and Star Fox, but I think the SNES did a decent job and just improved it. Smash Bros was a more original concept to the N64 itself in that way, so I’m with you on that pick. Kicking out Mario 64, with its influence on game controller design and one of the most speeding ran games in existence is insanity. It’s the gold standard for 3D platforming.

Yup, and that requirement really held it back from greater exposure. It is, pun intended, a perfect game. Better than Goldeneye in every way, and honestly still outclasses a lot of modern action games (campaign co-op, deep unique story, level replayability, the shooting range challenges, the combat simulator challenges, the unique weapons, the soundtrack, the voice acting, the world building, the NPCs, the main character, Elvis..., too many to list like this). But that damn RAM expander requirement meant so many fewer people actually played it.

I never played any Zelda games or Perfect dark. I would choose Mario Cart over the Mario 64 game because that one is only 1 player. Star Fox 64 should be up there. I never had a 64 but my nephew did. I’m trying to remember what other games he had that I liked. There was one that he rented that was about fighter jets. I picked the F-14. I figured out how to fly it with the sun behind me so that nobody could see me attacking them.

For one, I liked that I didn't need to unlock the best moves for my created characters. In WM 2000 I had created all my favorite All Japan wrestlers plus Hayabusa, but when I moved to No Mercy, I couldn't use the Phoenix Splash without unlocking it, lol. Also that was about the time I got a job and suddenly had far less time to play like I did with WM 2000, so there's that.

well hell, my brain started getting nostalgic about the SNES not the 64. I had 2 dozen NES games and so when the SNES came out, I got one... but then only ever owned TWO games for it. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and Earthbound. I just lived at Blockbuster and Hasting and Shows To Go every Friday. Never bought. Always Rented. However, I didn't own a 64 until well after the PS2 came out. Even then, it was gifted by a roommate and I never owned any games for it, either.

ehh...much as we all loved shadows of the empire, it was a pretty bad game, and really hasn't aged well compared to the other 3 you listed. The janky jump physics coupled with the lack of checkpoints in what could be hour long levels was a problem. didn't stop me from putting a bazillion hours into it, but it's definitely a game that would benefit from a remaster/rerelease that tweaked the controls a bit and added save states or something.

I suppose that depends. It came out when I was in college, and the ability to play 4 players at once for stuff like goldeneye and NBA jams was huge. It was perfect for playing with a group after getting home from the bars. In other situations, if you wanted to chill, you break out the PlayStation. But if you wanted to stay rowdy, you went with n64.

Which makes Goldeneye perfect for that age. Zelda too. PlayStation was big then, but it appealed to the Genesis kids. The Nintendo Xennials grew up with the systems. The N64 was high school/college and still dominated. GameCube was when our generation kind of started to punt because we were adults then and the majority of people who would still game bought the PS2 because it was a cheap DVD player and thus dominated the next cycle. But N64 was ABSOLUTELY still a dominant force. If you never had Goldeneye/Smash Bros/Mario Party/Perfect Dark/Conker nights with your boys back before life got real I’m sorry man you missed the fuck out. But N64 was absolutely a Xennial beast. It was the end of that whole era.

There is a decompiled PC port of [Perfect Dark].(https://twistedvoxel.com/perfect-dark-fully-decompiled-native-pc-port-multiplayer/) It works with keyboard and mouse. Has a much higher fps limit and resolution than natively available. I have been enjoying it at 1440p/144fps and the latest versions have full multi-player, etc.

That laptop gun and I think it was called Cyclone gun that fired like 100 rounds in a second was awesome! A gun where it’s magazine went it sideways iirc. Great story line and graphics! I mean all other games were awesome. Bond had a secret level to unlock which was cool. Aztec? Super Mario 64, took nearly 2 decades to beat, even with a cheat sheet. We had a lot of games… my sister used to do speed runs on that Zelda. Would probably play 16ish hours a day, probably more idk. And she’d complete within a few days. Kudos to her cuz it took me like a couple months or so. I miss these type of games and graphics. I’m ok with old school. A previous colleague gave me shit for playing Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory back in like 2015. Old game, yes, fun, also yes! Lot of strategy involved once you know the map and know that the Engineer is most important player…

Perfect dark was…. Perfect. But, I feel like mario kart was a pillar for the 64. Perfect dark was the greatest spiritual sequel to goldeneye. But I feel like it wasn’t a founder of principle of the N64. There’s also mischief makers, and robotron64(I spent a whole day on acid playing that game. Holy. Fuck.). I grew up with Atari. But the n64 is the one that made the biggest impact on me.

I got my brother an N64 for Xmas when I was younger with zelda and goldeneye. Those were the 2 best games for the system that we ever owned and we built a collection for the next 4 years. 007 was played tactically every single night. We would have friends over and play 4 square golden gun or slappers to spice it up.

GoldenEye 007 for sure. That is a pillar and a game changer. I would want to throw in there AKI’s WCW/nWo Revenge if we are talking domestic releases. Otherwise VPW 2 if we are including Japanese releases.

For me it's Perfect Dark, Ocarina of Time, Doom64 and Mario Kart 64 if I gotta pick top 4. This is also a great Mt. Rushmore though, I love Mario 64 and Goldeneye. Still got my N64 and games, but those controllers haven't stood the test of time.

I agree, I might do wwf no mercy, but one of those thq wrestling games definitely belong up there. Perfect dark is Golden Eye evolved. That being said I also think Mario kart 64 should be there. This might be the toughest Mt. Rushmore question I’ve ever seen.
