Why is figuring out where to watch the Premier League every season more confusing than the actual matches?

Every year the broadcasters reshuffle rights like they’re doing fantasy football drafts, and suddenly the one match I want is on a channel I didn’t even know existed last week. At this point I spend more time comparing packages than actually watching football.

Literally just had this discussion in one of the Arsenal subreddits. Get a VPN - set it to Ukraine - sign up for Setanta Sports (costs £1.85 a month or £18.51 a year) and you get all of the prem games. 3pm kick offs, carabao cup, i believe FA Cup, along with the occasional championship game and Bundesliga. If it had Champions League, then it would be perfect. But it’s all in English, don’t need a foreign address or debit card, has English commentary, it’s basically as close to perfect as you can get.
I also watch UFC but don’t like having to wake up early in the morning, so I just go to sleep like normal and then watch the entire main card in the morning when I wake up. I honestly cannot recommend it enough. Only downside is you have to watch it on a phone or laptop as it recognises you’re not actually in Ukraine if you try to ping it to your tv
jonty_beeftree@reddit
In the last month, I keep getting error messages. Have you got the same? Apparently they have added something which sees you are on a vpn.
MeetingGunner7330@reddit
Yeah during the game today it would cut out randomly and I would have to reload it. I hope they haven’t cracked down on it because it’s really refreshing to watch all the prem games and not have to listen to Gary Neville and the sky lot
South_Leek_5730@reddit
So I had this a few years back as I subscribed to US networks using a smartdns service. You need a firestick and then sideload the app because the region of the firestick (or TV) won't let you install apps for other countries. Only downside is having to manually update. You could always just cast it to the firestick or TV.
Remote_Atmosphere993@reddit
Why wouldn't you just set the vpn on your TV to Ukraine?
MeetingGunner7330@reddit
I don’t know if you would be able to access Setanta via a tv app so I guess you could set the VPN on your tv to Ukraine, but then I imagine you would have to use your TV’s internet browser to try and access the website and then find the game you want which can feel a bit clunky. A few more steps but not impossible I guess. I would personally just load it on my laptop and then plug it into my tv via a HDMI if I wanted to watch it on the big screen
AcceptableCustomer89@reddit
Must be a setanta TV app, surely
MeetingGunner7330@reddit
I don’t know if the VPN would be enough to fool the TV’s App Store and allow you access foreign apps. Must be some way as a lot of the Asian and Indian communities install apps on their TV’s that allow them to access content from their home countries
taknyos@reddit
Not sure about Setanta, but I do this with Disney+ through India (it also has all PL games).
I have a firestick with a VPN on it and you can load any android app on it, there happens to be an android tv app for the service I use, it's easy to put onto a firestick.

You can find better alternatives to the greedy Sky. Dodgy Box is the way to go, if you don’t have one, google GoBuyIP-TV and thank me later.

Have you not heard football isn't about the game anymore it's about how much money they can make.
Salaried_Zebra@reddit
Welcome to the 21st century. That's all anything is about now.
Biggeordiegeek@reddit
I just don’t bother anymore
The money required to watch the games is stupid now, and investigating the dodgy devices gave me pause for thought when I examined what one was trying to do in a controlled air gapped environment, and its behaviour was not something I would want to introduce into my home given the unsolicited network activity and they data it was trying to harvest
Salaried_Zebra@reddit
Can you elaborate further on what the devices were doing?
daddywookie@reddit
Similar here. All the people saying just get a dodgy stick and I'm wondering what on earth that device is doing to my local network and who is getting my data.
I've compromised on a VPN and a browser used only for this purpose with no accounts present.

I remember when people said BT adding competition would be great for the consumer. Just meant more than one bill.
Redangle11@reddit
I worked with a guy that was instrumental in the BT sky case, he believed it was in the consumer interest for years, but now accepts that there can be benevolent monopolies and the only people that benefited were the TV folk and the leagues.
Entfly@reddit
I disagree, competition is great.
Competition doesn't work when you share the matches.
Give Sky every PL match. Also give BT every PL match. Also give Amazon every PL match.
That's actual competition.
You don't go, oh the supermarket sector has competition with Tesco selling bacon, Asda selling milk, Sainsbury's selling bread and so on.

No , 3pm kickoff
5ubredhit@reddit
It doesn’t if it’s a 3pm kick-off on Saturday.
Educational-Angle717@reddit
Well 3pms aren’t on anyway are they. Agree that is a right pain but not much you can do.
5ubredhit@reddit
Not in the U.K. but a lot of other countries show them and it’s fairly easy to stream. Saves needing to find out who’s showing what if you’re always going to the same place to stream. But I appreciate it’s not for everyone.
dash1004@reddit
Do your homework before posting. All across the internet, you can find better alternatives to the greedy Sky. Dodgy Box is the way to go, if you don’t have one, google GoBuyIP-TV and thank me later.
Ok_Staff_1193@reddit
Exactly.. I use LimeTVLive you can google much cheaper than Sky works well for me.
sme11yc0ck@reddit
That's the way.
LJA0611@reddit
But it’s not really confusing though is it?
For years and years matches have either been on sky or BT/TNT (apart from few Amazon prime weeks). And they have generally kept the same kick off slots.
There are alternative ways of watching everything of course.
W35TH4M@reddit
To make it even easier Amazon haven’t even had the rights anymore as of this season
W35TH4M@reddit
There are literally just two options and it’s not hard to check which of the two it’s on
Posluszny@reddit
It hasn't changed for years now?
It's been Sky and BT/TNT for 10 years with a sprinkling of Amazon prime
W35TH4M@reddit
Prime don’t even have the rights anymore as of this season
Skeletime@reddit
TNT will be leaving Discovery soon and joining HBO Max. Don't think it'll really change much when watching on TV but if going through an app then it'll be HBO rather than Discovery+.
TentativeGosling@reddit
Didn't Discovery show a match this year as well?
Posluszny@reddit
Discovery is the same as BT/TNT
Mysterious-Sock39@reddit
IPTV no issues for me
regulator202@reddit
Definitely wouldn't pay for it all, wouldn't even pay for a stick. You can stream every game online and have been able to for years. Watch on any device with an internet browser, no money necessary
o_sooperstar_o@reddit
If the games are being shown in the uk, then the premier league website literally shows the broadcaster in the upcoming fixtures.
quantum-fluxer@reddit
Sky and TNT, one or two games per season on Amazon prime.
Can you count to 3? What exactly can you not figure out? Do you know what Google is? How does it take you more than 90 minutes to compare them? Which channel did you not know even existed? Are you mentally handicapped in some way?
So many questions..

I see this all the time on r/Britishproblems and I just don't get it at all. It seems like deliberate incompetence.
The PL is always mostly on Sky and one other channel which has been Setanta/BT/TNT. Twice a year it's on Amazon, but that even stops after this year.
CL has been on BT/TNT for over a decade.
