What was the dumbest rule your school thought up?

Everyone rightly condemning the much decreased but still existing practice of year round shorts primary boy uniforms, needs to realise how cruelly inconsistent the picture is, so that even 1970s-80s when reportedly still much more frequent, and even in private school, it was possible to chance not to get it and get the reverse, cruel luck if like me you strongly liked shorts. It was never much of a thing in South Wales, and even at that date I could grow up there without knowing that those uniforms existed (I was never a cub either), which still today would not be possible in Edinburgh where they are a prominent sight. So in a flybynight shoestring downmarket private grammar school that only existed for 27 years, smaller curriculum and poorer resources than the comprehensives, was preaching populist certainty in homework fanaticism, and utterly failed and got consistently bad results, including gave me a pressure breakdown at 14: I was a scholarship boy misread as gifted just because I was an early reader - Shorts not allowed above the first primary year above infants, which would be age 8. Long trousers only in any heat, from that young. But for girls, though a critical former girl has said they found having to wear skirts cold, they had complete choice between woolly tights or long or short socks. We were bussed 2 miles to a site for PE, (at least good it had no showers in my time, after too hot ones had traumatised me in a previous school), not allowed to go home in our kits, had to change back into our uniforms even if a late finish of PE was delaying the school buses. All girls and the junior boys had blue blazers, but only the senior boys had black blazers, as if only we should be more like business suits. Everyone had to keep our uncomfortable top shirt button done up. A new ban on moustaches for boys, hitting sixth formers, was started midway through an academic year. All except sixth form had to stay out in the yard at breaktimes and start of day: but unlike in some schools here, at least we had our coats okay and were allowed in if rain. Supposed to be allowed in if your class's "library day", but the door duty prefects were not kept informed who + often disbelieved you + barred the way. All except sixth form were not allowed to use the indoor main staircase, made to use a slimy iron fire escape instead. This was a silly long detour if between both ends of the staircase, or if going to 2 rooms at its top it meant disruptively going through another classroom and the sixth form room. If to avoid that disruption they let us use the staircase's upper half, still got shouted at when I tried to use its lower half. Also not allowed to use a door from the bottom corridor that faced nicely across to some outbuildings including school hall, instead made to use the opposite door on the building's wrong side + walk round through the yard. Made to stand when teachers entered a room. Teachers were made to set us monthly tests even if inconvenient to them. Swearing a caning offence (but kids still swore frequently among ourselves), swearing at a teacher a suspending offence. The most serious harm, head invited parents to refuse to sign homework they did not regard as the kid's best ability, and the kid would be punished for it. Totally made "best the enemy of good" + that's how they destroyed themselves.
