Non-Vegans, do you have any Vegan food products you love?

I'm not vegan but have been picking up vegan options to try them out and see where I can make satisfying replacements. For those of you that do similar, what are your favourite vegan products? Not meaning obviously vegan foods like fruit and vegetables, but stuff like vegan cheese or haggis etc. My husband got flora plant butter without telling me and I never noticed it wasn't real butter, its now replaced real butter for us. I tried oat milk in my coffee and I personally find it delicious compared to cow milk. Not tried it with anything else yet but suddenly I love coffee. I enjoy the violife cheese slices, it has a creamy mushroom taste to it vs cheesey but it works for me. Can't remember the brand but there are vegan chive and onion bagels that are so rich in flavour, they give a cheesey vibe. Interested to hear any others!

A lot of processed stuff I think. One of my pals has a vendetta against meat substitutes and I'm like girl tofu and tempeh and seitan are really old and really cool sources of protein. Learn to love them. Play with them. They will love you back if you let them.

I once made vegan ice cream with soft tofu, coconut cream, melted dark chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar, and chopped candied ginger. blended and churned it and it could easily have been dairy ice cream— i loved it! i’m not vegan at all but i loved the challenge and i’d absolutely do it again.

I’m not vegan but food/products I enjoy regularly: •Candy Kitten, Smitten in blueberry flavour. •Little Moons, mochi sorbet balls. •Jude’s, salted caramel minis •Oddly Good, dreamy caramel dessert pot. •Booja Booja, chocolate truffles in hazelnut crunch or salted caramel. •Ombar, coconut m’lk chocolate bar. •M&S plant kitchen, potato salad. •M&S plant kitchen, chocolate and hazelnut drink. •Tiba, tempeh. •Vivera, Greek kebab. •Clearsprings, silken tofu - it’s shelf stable so I have a few packs in the cupboard. •Juicy Marbles, fillet steak (sears and crusts nicely and has a shredding texture similar to a steak, doesn’t have a strong meat taste though) •This Isn’t, chicken thighs. •Rude Health, coconut milk. •Odysea, ajvar. •Stokes, tomato ketchup (I like their mayos too but they’re not vegan, and their bbq is delicious too but contains honey). Chinese supermarket: •fresh silken tofu - for desserts or light cooking. •fresh extra firm tofu - braised dishes or pan frying. • •tofu puffs - for hot pot. •Yutaka, inari-age, Japanese marinaded tofu pockets. •Clearsprings, sweet white miso. •Vita, malted soy milk (shelf stable). •fresh soy milk it has a richer mouth-feel and tastes nuttier than its western equivalent. I dislike western soy milk, it’s the equivalent to 0% red top/ 1% orange top milk.

The Linda McCartney shredded vegan duck is DELICIOUS. You need to cook it long enough so that it starts to crisp up, but it’s fantastic in Chinese pancakes with hoisin, cucumber & spring onions.

Came here to say this!! It genuinely tastes just as good as actual hoisin duck pancakes from the local Chinese - I thought maybe I had just forgotten the taste as I’ve been veggie for 12 years but I recently cooked it for a meat-eater friend who was convinced it was actual duck

My only advice is don't tell people you're vegan. Even the kindest of friends and family can be absolute jerks when it comes to meat and dairy. Just protect your peace and just order things you fancy at restaurants and eat how you want at home. I wish I'd never told anyone it's a nightmare

Also not vegan but regularly buy smoked tofu, Lidl and Aldi one is very good and the Vivera kebab stuff from Tesco is great. I personally cannot stand vegan cheese or butter replacements, I’m an absolute fiend for the real stuff and always will be. I’ve tried my best but failed on that front.

I don't care what anyone else says vegan cheese should not be called cheese because it just simply is not a replacement for cheese. Put it on all the pizzas you like, just because you put it in the same place as cheese doesn't mean it's a replacement for cheese. Sincerely - a vegetarian who is essentially vegan + cheese.

I'm not bothered about whether it's plant based or not. A product name should represent the function of a thing. Let's take milk for example, soya milk, oat milk, almond milk - all acceptable replacements for dairy milk; dependent on your taste, but they still function in place of milk. Same thing for veggie or vegan burgers. But vegan cheese just does not serve the same function as dairy cheese, they are just simply not good enough to replace dairy cheese. So don't try telling me it's cheese, it's not, it's a vaguely cheesey like flavoured block of (usually) coconut oil.

I would argue that there are many different cheeses and they serve a lot of different functions, some of which have perfectly acceptable replacements, others do not. A soft cheese like philadelphia has a perfectly good vegan alternative, honestly can't tell the difference between the supermarket soft cheese and the vegan supermarket soft cheese. If you're into fancy cheese-board cheeses, "fauxmagerie" and "i am nut cheese" and a few others are making some fantastic stuff. I took a bunch of that kind of stuff to my friends "cheesemas" party and it was a hit. I also had multiple kinds of vegan pate and it was lovely. I admit, there are things that aren't there yet, mozzarella I haven't found a decent replacement for. Hard cheeses like cheddar are also proving to be difficult to replace, but the supermarket block is perfectly serviceable in situations where you would want it cold and sliced or grated, like a "ham" and "cheese" sandwich, but it doesn't work well on a pizza or any other melty situation, thankfully for sauces stuff like nutritional yeast exists, which does have a funk to it which is on the cheesy side, but not quite there, but is delicious and I could probably eat it by the spoonful. Violife block melts but tastes like plastic, and their feta just tastes like a block of sloppy coconut.

The Sheese cheddar block I find pretty close to the real stuff (from what I remember, been a few years). It even has a bit of a crumble to it when you slice it. The flavour isn’t overpowering at all and it melts like the real stuff, going a nice brown on top but doesn’t get that horrible claggy texture that sticks to your teeth that most others do. I used to love the Red Leicester but they stopped doing it 😢 Also really like the plant baby bel! Yet to find a good mozzarella though 🙁 I want one that tastes nice as it comes, to put in a salad or something but also melts nicely and gives a bit of a cheese pull and doesn’t taste like overpowering fake cheese vomit that coats your teeth

You simply do not have enough experience with vegan cheese. Vegan cheeses absolutely replace dairy cheeses, but the tricky part is in knowing which vegan cheese to use for which application. For pretty much everything you would use cheese for, there is a vegan cheese that fits the bill. The only exception I've found is when you want to gorge yourself on a mountain of cheese (crackers optional), where fancy vegan cheeses can pass the taste test but if you eat enough then your stomach won't be happy.

Agreed. Vegan cheese is absolutely foul. Cheese is the only dairy I still have (vegetarian for 12 years and for the last 5 I’ve had oat milk, accidentally vegan butter (flora) and Alpro yoghurt as I personally prefer it. But there is absolutely no substitute for real cheese IMO, I’m a cheese fiend but I’d sooner have no cheese at all than fake cheese.

I tried the smoked tofu from Lidl earlier this week. The smell was horrendous! Waaay too much fake smoke. I ended up throwing it out because the smell was so overpowering. Normally, I like strong flavours - my sense of taste/smell isn't the best (surgery damaged the ol'olfactory bits). It was a real shame - I was looking forward to it!

Vegan for 10 years 👋 had to ditch it for health reasons, still veggie, here are the best vegan products: - Veggie chicken nuggets. Literally can’t tell the difference. M&S and tescos own brand are the best. - Richmond vegan sausages. Again I had my meat loving stepdad try them & couldn’t tell the difference & loved them. - Dark chocolate, I got really into this before vegan chocolate became a thing. Cherry flavoured and orange flavoured rich dark chocolate with a coffee??? dream! - Any alternatives from the ‘this isn’t’ range. probably the best stuff, in particular the chicken thighs & mince. - Almond milk I like this for baking, gives a subtle flavour and I’ve found it sometimes easier to work with. Always use this for brownies. - Alpro soy yoghurt. Tastes good, lasts waaaay longer. - Jammie dodgers, oreo’s, bourbons etc - all ‘accidently’ vegan, all delicious. - Vegan mayo. Helmans tastes almost identical. - Any veggie ice cream that’s coconut based. - Magnums, vegan blueberry ones are insane. - Buttermilk chocolate. If you want to go dairy free this is by far the best vegan chocolate. They do like snickers, mars etc. - Booja booja truffles. I still get these now, my fav chocolate truffles. Incredibly rich and decedent. - Tofu. If you don’t like it you aren’t cooking it right. Marinate it, air fry it, bake it, have it raw over a sushi bowl with siracha mayo. So good for you and so tasty, you just have to work with it a little. To be so fr avoid the cheese lol, this is the one area I gaslit myself into liking, it’s dreadful. Everything else is decent. I highly recommend swapping stuff out. Do meatless mondays, try alternatives, a lot of stuff is ‘accidentally vegan’ etc.

I love Alpro vanilla soy milk. Always been a major milk drinker since I was little so don’t normally like milk alternatives. Vegan cream cheese is just as good as dairy imo. Not hard cheeses vegan hard cheese do not compare at all.

Lidl has a "fresh" (not frozen) range in the fridges, the burgers, sausages and mince are all genuinely great! (Not tried much outside of those). Like Quorn is ok...like...its fine but bit if a weird texture, whereas this stuff is all REALLY good! Plus with the burgers, proper mince burgers always make me feel a bit groggy of gross after but these taste amazing and don't do that 😂

Are vegetables and fruits vegan? I don't know what kind of rules that cult has for what they can eat. Anyway, I like carrots, bananas, asparagus, onions, apples, peas, cabbage, strawberries, aubergines, mushrooms, daikon, oranges, renkon, cucumbers, pickled gherkins, etc. Probably missed a few. I really fucking love potatoes. One time, I made so much fake roast potatoes, I almost passed out.

Quorn mince, cocktail sausages and nuggets, oat barista and soy milk - we don’t use cow’s milk. Tofu is a weekly staple, and we’ve also just tried tempeh on the kids which turned out to be a winner. For mince, I find the Profusion pea and fava bean chunks have a better texture than other dried products.

(Don’t be mad I am vegan) When we were at uni we did a “come dine with me” type thing between our friends to encourage us to learn to cook and a couple of us were vegan or veggie so everybody had to cater to some extent. I found that much like for us, there were some popular basic replacements that they kept using when we weren’t there. Predominantly meat that’s quite far removed from being an animal due to processing being quite normal, so people who aren’t “big meat people” often quite enjoy chicken chunks not having the occasional veiny part or feather and being able to eat mince without any gristly bits. Back at the time there was just quorn but yeah. Quite a lot of my mates ended up reducing meat by replacing cheap processed meat with cheap processed non meat.

Loads. There is a nice vegan whipped cream in Tesco, I forget the brand. To be fair I think most supermarkets use the same one. I like all things Oatly. I like Alpro greek style yoghurt. I generally prefer oat milk to other milks but soy is cheaper so I just buy whatever soy milk is going. This Isn't Chicken is my favourite chicken alternative although the vegetarian butcher is also pretty good. As is Tofoo seitan if you can find it. I miss oxo meat free chicken stock cubes I don't know why none of the supermarkets near me have it anymore. Cathedral city does the best every day cheese (still can't eat it raw). If you want pizza cheese casadei foods does the best by a country mile. There's a cream cheese I love from...Honestly Tasty I think it is. Flora does the best butter, but stork works for baking in a pinch. The own brand vegan sausages from any UK supermarket are much better than Linda McCartney and the like. Morrisons do my favourite vegan burgers for day to day stuff.

Avoid the cheese for the most part but the Violife greek style cheese is really good! It's even good when you put it on pizza as a mozzarella alternative. I usually like it too much to melt it, it goes straight into a massive greek salad with olives etc.

Lurpak plant based alternative is the best swap I’ve had so far. I like the Asda vegan mozerella. Alpro pudding pots (mainly the vanilla flavour and dark chocolate flavour). OMV cherry bakewell chunky cookies. NOMO cookie dough chocolate bar. Ben and Jerry’s vegan cookie dough ice cream. Green cuisine dippers are pretty good. Also the salted caramel chocolate spread in the Aldi special buys is yummy too. I had to cut dairy due to breastfeeding my baby who has CMPA. But as you can probably tell, I have a major sweet tooth from the breastfeeding.

Alpro chocolate or caramel soy dessert pots, their yogurts are also great. Coconut Collaborative chocolate pots are delicious. The Quorn slices are also pretty nice in sandwiches IMO. As for vegan chicken nuggets, tbh I've tried loads and they're all pretty good, it's one of those things that's processed so much the non-meat version is almost indistinguishable. Honestly, I like when marshmallows or gummy sweets are vegan, I don't have a brand preference, I just find gelatin pretty gross.

If it's just the texture of mushrooms you loath have you tried blitzing a load in the blender and adding them at the soffitto stage. Mushrooms add a load of umami to slow cooked dishes but you don't really need to 'feel' them.

Greggs vegan sausage rolls are genuinely very very nice! And Violife vegan cheese. I love that stuff. As a non vegan I don't buy it a lot as it works out expensive compared to dairy cheese. But yeah it's very good This one doesn't really qualify but I also love quorn. But I think some of that I like is only veggie not vegan because it has egg as a binder maybe? Something like that

I've recently found a tofu brand that I really, really like. Taifun do smoked tofu and a japanes style tofu (I have no idea what that means) and a couple of others I've not yet tried. It's already pressed and can, I believe be eaten straight from the packet. I use it in stir-fries and curries mainly. Yes, finally a tofu that I buy and use instead of one I buy, stick it in the fridge and then have to chuck it out when it's well past it's use-by date because I couldn't cope with it. Although I have to say I don't think it is particularly cheap but cheaper than buying and chucking!

Those McPlant cheeseburgers Maccy D's did were indistinguishable from the real thing. I even thought it was just the burger until I learned it was the whole thing. Same with a burger I had at a restaurant when we were at a Xmas do and the waitress accidentally served me the vegan version of a burger meant for someone else I'd ordered the meat version of. When she realised and came to apologise and swap it I said I'd not even realised and was fine with it. I've had vegan bacon before too and whilst the look of it wasn't quite right it tasted and felt enough like the real thing. Vegan Shepherds Pie...indistinguishable again. Compared to what they used to be like years ago they've come on in leaps and bounds.

My partner has developed milk and onion allergies, I have a soya one, so we've changed a lot of things, but you will not take my butter. He hates all the vegan cheese he's tried, he would rather go with out. I do buy pastry instead of making it, most brands are vegan as they don't use any animal fats. Cadbury's hot chocolate, the one you make with milk is what a vegan friend of mine calls "accidentally vegan", coconut milk works great for a hot chocolate. I made my own vegan Bailey's it tastes good, but it set and became a dessert. I prefer vegan condensed coconut milk, it makes a lovely caramel with a slight coconut taste. I also make vegan chilli, lasagna, spaghetti bolognese with mushrooms instead of mince. Dice them small it looks like mince. The next thing I will be attempting to make vegan is a tiramisu 🤞it's my favourite.

I'm not vegan, but I am lactose intolerant (otherwise I would still be eating normal yogurts and drinking normal milk). I have a lot of soya yogurts - love them. Especially the strawberry or mango ones that are yogurt with the pureed fruit in the bottom 😋 Chocolate soya milk is another nice one - I have it warmed up with weetabix and fruit for breakfast. Can't stand normal soya milk though and oat milk in coffee tastes rank and the smell makes me think of porridge (which i also can't stand) 🤣🙈 I don't mind some vegan cheese -wouldn't say I love any of them. None of it melts properly, which makes me irrationally angry. I am quite lucky that I can tolerate some cheese, so if somewhere uses mozzarella (as long as it's not fresh) on pizza, i can have it.

I went on oat milk as my son needed to try a dairy free diet. He no longer needs to be on the diet, so drinks cows milk again, but I personally prefer the oat milk with my cereal and in my coffee. Also really enjoyed coconut milk with my oats, but I might be slightly intolerant to coconut, so don't have it frequently

Lidl nuggets. Im not a fan of quorn but the Lidl ones are soya based and really nice with the sweet chilli dip they come with. Also like the smoked Tofoo and cauldron marinated soya pieces. We often have these in a stir fry instead of chicken. Alpro chocolate dessert pots, its like a yoghurt or custard but you get them off the shelf not in the fridge. Pulled jackfruit, like pulled pork. I use a bosch recipe, so easy to make. Cauliflower buffalo (wings?) Again bosh recipie. Oyster mushrooms have a meaty texture and we often have these in fajitas instead of chicken.

It’s 50g protein per 100g… my kids love it too. I do also just love tempeh and tofu. Generally I don’t like the meat alternatives but soy mince / tofu / tempeh are all just delish. Vegan cheese is tricky - there are some nice almond based substitutes that are very nice as long as you accept they are spreads not cheese. Quorn can be surprisingly nice. It is a sponge for flavourings and if breaded, it isn't that far from chicken. Cocoa and beetroot cake is lovely. Courgette cake has a really creamy and light feel to it. A lot of mushroom broth bowls are fantastic.

I don't like the cashew based ones. My partner is vegan and I am not. He used to love cheese before the switch. I work near Borough so went to their cheese special to get my own cheese and test a few stalls for a good alternative. The almond based ones seem to be the best. Haven't tried hazelnut yet. Even the good artisan makers tend to use cashew here.

My wife is vegan and I am not but we keep the house vegan. It's meant I've discovered loads of substitutes or just made stuff myself! I now make my own vegan condensed milk and I love Oatley Greek yogurt. Noone has any clue it's vegan when we serve it.

Aldi do a range of no chicken soya chunks and they are spectacular. All 3 flavours (Meditteranean, Garlic and Herb and Original) are great and my go to lazy meal since discovering them is flatbreads with them, mediterranean veg and peri peri sauce drizzled on top.

Most firetree chocolate is vegan-friendly, I think they use a lot of oat milk. Bean to bar chocolate is one area where it being vegan is really not an issue at all. Firetree's Mindanao 50% is one of my favourite bars of all time.

Tempeh is great in a stir fry. It's not the easiest to find, but they have started stocking it consistently at my Lidl. It's best marinated, as it soaks up sauce. While it's soy based, it's nothing like tofu in texture or taste. It's more umami.

alpro yogurt pots! especially the raspberry cranberry flavour - they’re great, i just wish they came in different flavour combinations because i don’t like the pear ones :/ also, alpro plain yogurt. it’s great in the summer with granola. i can’t have lactose (and i lowkey hate the tangy taste of most yogurts) so i’ve been buying alpro for years.

Hummus! Coconut cream is a good substitute in cooking where cream is needed (and it doesn't necessarily taste like coconut). The IKEA veggie meatballs are great if you hate plant based but still eat vegan. My partner is vegetarian but hates plant based and fake meat stuff so this is a great option. Same with the veggie sausages which he uses for hotdogs.

Violife do a vegan camembert that's really nice if you bake it. If you use it instead of mozarella on pizza, it melts really nicely and has a nice creamy flavour, and looks like cheese. It's called "La Rond", i've only ever found it at vegan friendly smaller shops. There's a vegan cheese shop in London who ship nationwide called La Fauxmagerie, I think they're in some bigger waitrose too, They're too expensive in my opinion, but they do lovely vegan cheese. Aldi soya mince is bang on too. If you're making a cottage pie or bolognaise, it's no different to regular, bog standard mince and 1/4 the price.

The Swedish glacé ice cream is vegan. Creamy vanilla goodness. Hellmans plant based mayo. Don’t know there’s a difference. Bluffalo Notzarella is the best (I think) mozzarella swap. There’s also just things that are vegan and people don’t know like bourbon biscuits and apple strudel if you’re trying to make conscious choices. The Aldi Ultimate plant based burgers are also one of the best of the market. If you’re into stuffed pasta, there’s a brand called Nomma that are great. And also the plant based lurpak is like for like.

Oat milk for everything. Switched to oat milk for a veganuary years ago, getting barista oat for coffee and no sugar oat milk for everything else. It was weird to begin with, but now cows milk seems odd. Appreciate this isn’t shouting about how good oat milk is, but it can easily replace a non-vegan alternative and become preferable (for clarity I am not remotely vegan!)

Aldi has a range of fake cheese ("Plant Kitchen" label) which is very useful to me now I can't have dairy. It isn't indistinguishable from real cheese, but it does a great job, particularly the "not-zarella" and the sliced cheddar substitute. Their vegan Titan ice creams are also fucking brilliant.

I love frozen veggies. I get birds eye frozen veggies a lot. I also really like Three sister stew. And I make some very good vegan enchiladas. I don't try to eat vegan but I tend to be someone who if something is good I will eat it regardless of whether it's vegan, meat, vegetarian, or whatever. The thing that you used to keep me away from being vegan was cheese there were a lot of dishes growing up that I ate that were vegetarian but they had cheese on them. Since cheese makes my stomach hurt now I eat a lot more dishes that are vegan simply because I've kind of stopped putting cheese in them.

**Seitan** is a passable substitute for chicken. Made from wheat protein, it shreds like chicken and crisps up decently well. **Gregg's vegan sausage rolls** are superb, zero risk of a gristly bit of pork connective tissue and tastes exactly the same as their regular sausage rolls. Sainsbury's **Plant Pioneers** range is rather good, made from pea protein. It's a crying shame that their stuffed "turkey" crown and vegan wellington are only around at Xmas, I'd love them to be available all year round.

Quorn went vegan a while back and I do a great ”Spanish” rice with quorn, garlic paprika and lemon, trick is to get the rice seasoning right (1 tsp salt per cup of rice minimum). All the biscoff stuff is vegan AFAIK. I love the tivall mushroom yeast pate from Holland and Barrett (only the tivall brand though). Birds Eye “veggie fingers” make a terrific brunch sandwich in a crispy baguette with caramelised onions, we have that for breakfast as a treat. I also love the basil flavoured tofu (I think the brand is tofun) but it’s expensive.

I don't see food as vegan or not as an omnivore, I just see food without frontiers. I'll eat pretty much anything. I've eaten in vegan eateries and always enjoyed the food. I'm more likely to find a new treat at a vegan table, that's for sure. I don't have the teeth for seed based foods so would only turn them down for that reason.

I generally eat most produce (except for meat itself) vegan now, because my partner is lactose intolerant so we avoid milk and generally that means buying vegan options. M&S range of coconut creams (sour cream replacements) are good, Flora plant butter is nice, Violife vegan cheese is pretty good, sometimes we buy vegan kievs too I quite like them. Often if we go to places to eat, if they have vegan burgers I’ll get those, I find them generally to taste nice, less fatty, also a smaller portion, so it kinda works for me.
