Did your parents use to leave the TV on?

No for the main TV, though it was on often, but yes for the small portable. What's odd is the "delayed morals effect" (might have just coined that, but we can pop it on this page if it doesn't already exist - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_cognitive\_biases) in that many people did this up until the 90s without a second thought, but at around that time energy conservation and being environmentally conscious came in. Took until recent years for people to finally start turning shit off when they weren't using it but technology advanced in the interim it no longer matters - an old CRT TV would use a lot of power but a modern flatscreen uses hardly any. Between that and LED lighting, you could probably put most things on in a modern home all day and use less power than putting on an old style TV and big light in the living room for an hour.
