Klarkinsov@reddit
Serbia, Albania and Bosnia. I don't think that any Balkan country truly has a good reputation but those three (Serbia especially) take the crown.
Happy-Hour88@reddit
I think Western Europeans hate us Bulgarians than they hate you.
RemoteLook4698@reddit
We love Serbia tbh. Might be just us though, lmao
Klarkinsov@reddit
I think it's probably Greece and Romania that actually love/like us and we genuinely love y'all back lol
patricious@reddit
I agree and my perception of Serbs has improved lately after I starting buying stolen bicycles from a Serbian dude in Germany (great guy btw) . I then ship them to Kosovo and sell them at a profit. Sounds like a made up story right? Its not 😂

SOHONEYSAME@reddit
"We asked citizens across the G7 (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S.) to rate other nations on reputational factors such as trust, admiration, respect, and overall image".
(on their page).
This_Lion5856@reddit
I am 100% sure those are done by these online surveys that people are spamming for $0.20 per piece
IllNefariousness3822@reddit
More like they’re done for free in ChatGPT, complete with graphs.
SOHONEYSAME@reddit
this thread is evidence, that some Balkans people, still, "have a long way to go".
"it's fake" (in reality, "I don't like it").
(completely) absurd comparisons,
(Egypt/Romania, really?).
if this was an actually global poll only Greece & Turkey would be in top 50. (in different positions).
outside the Western world, no one knows the rest.
IllNefariousness3822@reddit
Yeah ok I’m a backwards Balkan ape, but if it’s not AI slop then what happens with Cuba, Venezuela and Kuwait disappearing ribbons? Because that’s my only issue here.

From a regional perspective serbia could be mentioned however this is largely related to the bosnian war despite that t think serbia and serbs are very good people
Chava_boy@reddit
Recency bias, perhaps?
kalac77@reddit
Not really, their politics and history books still deny a genocide and glorify convicted war criminals. Even in Belgrade, there are murals of the greatest butcher Ratko Mladić.
kalac77@reddit
Really? Dude you live in another world. Serbia is main source of problems in ex Yugoslavian states. They committed invasion and genocide, and in ex Yugoslavian states the most hated country by far. There was another survey couple of months ago that proves my point.
Dear-Potential-3477@reddit

puravidauvita@reddit
Traveled via train in old Yugoslavia 50 years ago. was weird from the few that spoke English then how they volunteered their hatred for Musclmen as Muslims were hated even the, same with Serbs hating Croatians and vice versa. Think it was bc Croats were pro Nazi ,if so anyone who was anti nazi deserved my respect Nobody liked the Turks I assume again bc of Ottoman Empire memories. But amazing how the ancient monarchies of this oppressed region used hate then to rule. In this respect I understand how white supremacy can be so contagious and can consume ppl.
MrMirageFiRe@reddit
What drugs did you take?
RemoteLook4698@reddit
The hatred you speak of had nothing to do with skin color at all, not even systematically in how it worked. Hatred was only targeted at Muslims because of what the Ottomans did to this region for centuries. That's it.
Orthodoxy kept a lot of us in the balkans alive. Some of us would literally be speaking Turkish and calling ourselves Turks had it not been for our faith, the Ottoman empires entire goal was to erase cultures, languages, and faiths, but do it slowly by drowning people instead of just killing them. When a father of 5 can barely feed his kids because of heavy taxation, less rights, etc, and all he has to do to fix it is to convert to Islam, he'll probably do it. The Church acted as a safety buffer for all Christians, keeping them from having to convert by taking care of them.
The hatred Balkan people have for Islam is quite deep, but it's not based on some supremacy ideology. It's based on anger and identity

Serbs got over 1000 years in court for their crimes, Bosniaks not even 10 years. Selective justice was applied and i dont understand how they can still make such nonsense statements.
Eternal victims.
Imaginary_String_814@reddit
the most responsible ones are charged and behind bars, and you got ur selective justice. Well over 1,000 years of prison time in total for Serbs and less then 10 for Bosniaks. Total prison time for crimes against Serbs at ICTY ≈ \~5–6 years.
Serbs of Bosnia got no justice at all from the post war courts, do you think thats fair ? barely 10 years issued for over 4000 Serb civilian deaths.
vegancorr@reddit
30 years is not much from a historical perspective. The Simpsons predicted the return of the USSR in 1998.
Low-Transportation95@reddit

ImaginaryZucchini272@reddit

Acceptable_Cook2036@reddit
Anti-NATO isn't pro-Putin. Serbs are their own. You sound like Russians- If youre not with me, youre against me.
ImaginaryZucchini272@reddit
I just say that siding with putin is stupid because Serbia isn’t going to get any advantage! If you get into EU is way better, economically speaking!
RemoteLook4698@reddit
Being anti mato and pro putting aren't necessarily the same thing. Not entirely disagreeing with you, but it's important to understand that some people hate nato because it killed civilians, not because they're pro putin
Inresponsibleone@reddit
Serbia is pretty pro Russia and pro Putin though.
RemoteLook4698@reddit
Vucic and his government is pro Russia. Most of the younger serbians aren't pro Russia at all. Almost everyone hates vucic basically, but unfortunately he keeps a very loyal base of nationalist idiots as his base.
Inresponsibleone@reddit
So there are enough likeminded people to keep him in power. I have heared also that it is less popular with the young
RemoteLook4698@reddit
Yeah unfortunately yes. I just meant that you shouldn't see it as representative of the population. In Greece for example, if you look at polls you'll see that 40+% voted for our current prime Minister, but in reality only like, 30% of the entire population voted at all. He's not representative of the population in the slightest. That's what I meant about Serbia.
Inresponsibleone@reddit
Don't people there care or belive voting outcome would be honored if they don't like the government and still don't vote?
RemoteLook4698@reddit
Not exactly. Voting here is for like, show, and shit. Doesn't matter at all, lmao.
Only one party here is even seriously going for the win. The rest sit there just to argue and call the main guy bad. Literally doesn't matter at all. Everyone is complete garbage

Depends on the perspective, within Europe it is Serbia by far and it is not even close. Worst reputation Albania or Serbia (Serbia in a better position due to Đoković, Jokić and few other people in sports). Everything average person from around the world knows about tuese countries is from mainstream media (and these two countries do not fare well in those).
Best reputation Croatia, 100% All people from outside know about Croatia is seaside and "that place where they shot GoT" which gives enough credit
Drax-Gorb-2026@reddit
Definitely Serbia due to its reputation as a tiny Russia. Albania second because of its annoying diaspora that is mostly making the news for its consistent high crime rates, especially in Britain. Greece third because the world got the ick after the financial crisis and is now treating it like a european Thailand.
Automatic_Success831@reddit

I’m not sure if perfectly integrating in the world’s greatest realm of mobsters and corrupt politicians is a positive example in this context.

MartinBP@reddit
My opinion of Serbia isn't negative just because of Bosnia/Kosovo, but because when visiting the country today you can clearly see no one learnt anything and the victim mentality is as high as ever.
LenaLena93@reddit
How can you “clearly see”. You are just a random tourist, like in any other country. People would not bother to share much more than basic daily necessities with a random stranger.

rrrzrrr@reddit
Idk sis, I agree about the victim mentality and I’m not a random tourist but someone who lived in Serbia and speaks the language. You can even see it on Reddit which is supposed to be the most “progressive” part of the population
kupusarovka@reddit
Not with the (most of) younger generation. Maybe it's just people around me, but everyone I know is well aware of what happened during the 90s and no one thinks of us as victims. The problem that younger generation has is that we are judged, and sometimes even harassed, for something that we weren't even alive to do or experience. I'm all for Serbia (as a state) paying for war damages and apologising but I don't want to feel guilty for something I didn't do. I think that most innocent people feel that way but it's hard for us to express that because we are labeled as 'traitors' by older and brainwashed generation, and labeled as 'genociders' by some of our neighbours.
Necessary-Noise5578@reddit
Tbf there are plenty of people who think we did nothing wrong and i dont like or support that at all. But it is tiring being painted like the only villain in a war, when the truth is the situation in the balkans has been extremely complex for decades before the bosnia, croatia and kosovo horrors happened. I am not denying serbias wrongs whatsoever, just trying to portray the feeling that lingers when the whole world automatically judges you for horrors done by war criminals, but other really fucking horrible things were never judged as harshly. I dont want to go too deep into it cause it always ends with an argument of who started what first, and theres no point to that. Yeah we still have a tone of neanderthals living here. Trust me we dont like it either.

I first frowned when I read this, but it actually reminded me of a former German coworker. A really lovely lady actually, I enjoyed working with her, but she once sent a screenshot from what seemed to be fake news stating that people should be cautious since there are bands offering free keychains at gas stations which actually contain chips so they can track you when you're not home and break in. At the end it stated that they are organised Romanian criminal groups. I read it at the end of my vacation, I usually muted notifications while off, but the last day decided to unmute and read the updates. Useless to say that it ruined my vacation. Back at work she asksed me after a while if I'm ok ( I left the work WA group after that message) and that shouldn't take it personally, it could have been any other nation like Serbs, Albanians. In my mind: gurl, please dont make it even worse! 🤣

urbanOutlaw04@reddit
Romanians used to be hated so much by Italians back in the days. But since many grew up there and there have been a lot of mixed marriages between us and Italians, things have definitely improved. We are still very hated in the UK. Germans always had a more neutral opinion of us, some even a positive one.
Albanians are definitely the most hated now.
DieKalteHeike@reddit
I grew up in a small village in Germany with a very small percentage of foreigners. The largest immigrant group there were Romanians who worked as guest workers for our local butcher. As a child, I was often told by people in the village community, though not necessarily by my parents, to stay away from them. Many residents seemed unsettled by their presence. As a kid, I never really understood why.
When I delivered newspapers as a side job as a kid, they were always friendly whenever I came to their house. That experience never matched the warnings I had heard.
So yes, racism and xenophobia toward Romanians definitely exist in Germany, especially in rural areas. To this day, some people, particularly from the older generation, still use the slur “Zigeuner” when referring to them. Although public xenophobia in recent years has shifted more toward immigrants from Syria and other countries, negative stereotypes about Romanians persist.
urbanOutlaw04@reddit
I live in Germany and I am studying here. Dual study system. The only time people were racist to me ( indirectly) was in school, but as you said, these were people from the rural area.

The UAE is one of the most advanced, richest, cleanest, most peaceful countries in the world. It has its problems, of course, but it's miles ahead of Romania, if we are honest. Mexico and Egypt had fascinating civilizations, everyone knows them. The pyramids in the two countries are unparalleled anywhere in the world.
Kalogero4Real@reddit
Here is reputation, not culture or any other thing. You really think that UAE has that great repution? Mybe you should do your own research about indian and pakistan workes and see the real life of the people down there. Not only focus on some celebrities that do escort service. In Mexico and Ehypt people disappear without a reason and never recovered. Would you feel good to walk around in those countries? I don't mean the turistic places. Please before write, research.
Dalsenius@reddit
I lived in Cairo for a year. It was perfectly safe. For being a mega city crime is pretty low. But you are missing the point. Romania is obviously a better country to live in than Mexico and Egypt for the average inhabitant but the reputation for the country and culture is low. It has no well known positive aspects at all that I am aware of?
Bucharest sounds like a decent town but it’s not as well known as say Prague or Vienna.
Egypt and Mexico are top tier countries in how famous they are even though they are dirt poor.
UAE is super wealthy and Dubai is a very popular tourist destination.
Andreas_Ashlyn@reddit
is Romania really a better place to live in than Mexico?
RemoteLook4698@reddit
Of course it is. Except for Canada, you have poisoned the entirety of south America, so most countries down there don't have anywhere near the living standards as an EU country, even without being particularly rich.
Andreas_Ashlyn@reddit
compare chile to Romania. I'm pretty sure Chile is doing better.
RemoteLook4698@reddit
And the US is #1 on every economic and power list, yet yall keep graping kids and shooting them in your schools.
Silly reputation lists mean very little when you're judging people. You can say their government and leadership sucks if you wish, but judging an entire country off of a vibe-written list is quite comical, especially when you're an American. Yall know a thing or two about lists, so this isn't exactly surprising.
Andreas_Ashlyn@reddit
no one wants to live in Romania though. Even my GF, who is Moldovan went to Romania, and then left it for Spain.
Chile doesn't have a big problem with crime
agree about the list about Romania is not really a powerhouse country that attracts investment or visitor
RemoteLook4698@reddit
Investing and tourism are very, very different, and the list says nothing like that. Romania gets lots of tourism, and even though there are still lots of issues there, they're doing about as well as any other balkan country. Now, idk about your girlfriend, but I've met plenty of Moldovan women in Greece, and none of them have any issues with romania and would be open to moving there.
Again, you're not in a position to talk about crime data. I'd take a Romanian pickpocket over some American school shooter or island owner every day of the week. And it's not like yall don't gkt shoplifting, gangs, racial violence, racism, political violence, etc.
Lots of people would rather live more modestly and not have to worry about their lids'school getting shot up, rather than the opposite.
Andreas_Ashlyn@reddit
Chile is not a dangerous country. Most people in the US they are not victimized by crying. A lot of of the eastern countries in the EU are still very poor. Which is why they have a huge exodus of their young people going to western Europe. Romania is probably the biggest offender.
what you're saying about the Usa is just memes being repeated from the guardian art social media. Doesn't mean a thing IRL.
RemoteLook4698@reddit
Just memes. Of course. It's not like your president was almost killed 3 times, it's not like politicians have been getting assassinated left and right over the last years and change, it's not like protests are basically happening daily in your country, everything is just memes.
I guess the rape island was also a meme then? Maybe your president fueling political and racial violence every time he speaks is also a meme. Or how NATO almost imploded because you voted for a complete idiot.
Eastern EU countries are poor because they've seen more war and more invasions than most other European countries, we've seen massive-scale propagandization of the masses during the cold War, where the US and the Soviets were trying to get the support of the balkans and meddling in everyone's politics, etc, etc.
By all metrics like population, gdp, gdppc, education scores, HDI,and even crime statistics (I just Checked), Romania and Chile are around the same. Chile actually has worse crime statistics than Romania, so you've literally been lying. Romania has more issues with demographic and brain drain, but every developed country has those issues.
So not only are you minimizing the shittiness of your country and why it's so low in the very list above (below Romania as well btw), you've also been lying. Lmao
Andreas_Ashlyn@reddit
do you think these things affect the average person living here? They certainly don't. The majority of violence here happens and inner cities between gangs. It's not political.
even after America put a lot of resources into rebuilding Europe, those eastern countries just aren't progressing. Anything to the east of like Poland has a really hard time gaining for his world and western status and Romania and Bulgaria are two of the worst examples.

When you stop asking yourself why, and you start assuming random reasons, you've lost the plot.
You don't even know anything about this stuff.
Andreas_Ashlyn@reddit
There's a reason there's a lot of Greeks and Romanians living in the USA, but closer to old people in the USA living in Greece and Romania
RemoteLook4698@reddit
Fk no. Who tf is giving visas to old Americans to just come here and eat our resources lmao. Young Greeks and Romanians leave because our countries can't absorb them into the work force after they're done with their studies, and even if they do, many of them don't make good money at first.
Most Greeks and Romanians who leave for the US work there for a few years and then come back here with money. Ain't nobody wanna live in a country that makes you pay for the ambulance lmao.
Andreas_Ashlyn@reddit
we dont need visas to visit the EU. you are speaking nonsense
RemoteLook4698@reddit
You said "living" not "visiting" lmao. If you were talking about vacation what ever was your point hahahahha. You make no sense
fk_censors@reddit
Did you see the viral video from Santiago with the carjackers who shot at a car and the people in the car ran over one of the criminals? That kind of wild action would never happen in Romania, even the mafia there doesn't kill people, human life is valuable unlike in South America. You can't compare the two societies, for all its problems, Romania is liveable for normal people whereas Chile isn't.
RemoteLook4698@reddit
Nro doesn't care lmao. I gave him the stats before. Romania and Chile are quite similar in population, gdp, gdppc, etc, but Chile is significantly worse in crime. He just doesn't care. Bro hates Romania for no reason lmao
craiova2103@reddit
In terms of GDP per capita, crime rate Romania is doing waaay better than Chile. It's a fact, you can check it.
Andreas_Ashlyn@reddit
morocco and algeria has lower crime than romania and chile too
craiova2103@reddit
No, they don't. You can check the figures.

Dalsenius@reddit
Well standard of living is way higher. It’s a EU country with great prospects.
Mexico has massive problems with crime
Andreas_Ashlyn@reddit
Mexico has crime, but it's still developing faster than Romania, which has a huge population problem because an exit is to Europe
SOHONEYSAME@reddit
yeah,
like, no offense, (we generally like Romania), but I don't know how anyone can compare Romania to Egypt in terms of global reputation, (& this poll isn't really 'global' still).
I've not visited Egypt, & I'm assuming most people answering, also, haven't.
so, people naturally base their answers on what they know of their country & its people.
(& that includes history, obviously, lol).
fk_censors@reddit
Ask a random person around the world where they would like to visit, and what do you think they would choose first? Romania or the UAE/Mexico/Egypt? This has nothing to do with quality of life, it has to do with global exposure and reputation.

Nobody went to Romania and came back blabbering about thieves and/or Romani people. Both are there, sure, but you are overstating the noticeability.
Now poll Egypt travellers and ask them what do they recall.
AndreiVid@reddit
It’s not about facts, it’s about reputation. And americans heard Egypt at their shooting range.
Potential-Future-324@reddit
This is not historical, it’s 2024 vs 2025. Egypt is some millennia and civilizations away from those times. Basically like comparing modern Greek mathematicians to Pytagoras
SOHONEYSAME@reddit
irrelevant,
I can tell u most Greeks think of history/ancient civilization, (when Egypt is mentioned).
so, naturally, they have a favourable view.
history is part of a country's reputation.
idandidc@reddit
i dont think i care about a countries history, if not in a history context.
SOHONEYSAME@reddit
cool.
MANY people do.
idandidc@reddit
they made great contributions to the history (thousands of years ago), that means they should be very good people!
RemoteLook4698@reddit
That wasn't really the point at all. You can't judge how good someone is when you don't know them, so you assess their reputation by things like history, recent events, etc. Most people think of today's Egypt as just another Arab country today, st least in my experience.
Most euro-western people don't particularly like Arabs, so if I had to guess I'd say their opinion is leaning towards bad rather than good. I personally don't think history played a big part here, but it does in other cases.
idandidc@reddit
i think ur just saying words. first you say you cant judge anyone, then you say you asses their reputation by history etc. and then you say history doesnt play a very big part.
RemoteLook4698@reddit
No, I said you misunderstood the other comment and then gave my own opinion.
I don't believe history is what people think when they think about Egypt. It's not that simple. The other commenter you replied to does think that, though.

When i say to people my origin. They reply "Mafia" and don't mess with. Knowing we are much more than that, it would be disshonest to say that those words do not bring anger in my blood, but at same time I remember of Machiavelli's virtu. He dictates that while it would be the best to be both loved and feared. If we have to choose between them. The safest option is Fear. People will think twice before crossing paths.
Its a sad reality but that's that i guess...
Che_Varack@reddit
He said that as advice to a ruler to maintain its position and not be overthrown. Cannot be interpolated to regular peoples positions.
Buk_voj_kryp_Z_bardh@reddit
Says who? His advice can be easily applied on modern everyday life.
His book has served well to many ambitious people who find themselves virtuous to climb the ladder be that on politics, corporation, business etc.
Even if one does not want to follow the path of the fox. They might find it beneficiary to protect themselves from ambitious "foes".
I personally do not like to act as he says but it has served me well to defend my chair multiple times from people trying to follow that path.
Honestly his words make a lot of sense to me. Or ive worked on very toxic workplaces that play that game so it might be my bias.

This graph is so unserious with Switzerland on top lmao
Master-Spring-@reddit
That was the biggest surprise to me.
Edit: My job includes A LOT of travel and I've worked with ALL flavours of Europeans over the past decade. To me, Switzerland came across as the European analogue to Japan with both the good and the not-so-good that that entailed. It was... interesting to watch people ice out or distance themselves from close workplace pals like that, just because the person had fallen out of favour with a higher up or with the 'group' (usually following the person having made some sort of blunder at work or having acted in a manner the group deemed 'weird'). Also, their gossip machine was legendary and rife with plausible deniability. 😅
Affectionate_Mud1091@reddit
I was never there personally but heard from friends that they are not really nice guys. They told me the swiss people are not fond of Slavic people and look down on them. That you would never be accepted and be one of them and would always be treated cold. Not sure how true it is.
KataqNarayan@reddit
Yes this is mostly true. Switzerland took a massive number of refugees from the former Yugoslavia which was a mistake (the number, not the act).
The expectation was that they would go home after the crisis was over, but unsurprisingly most did not. So the situation has just festered over the last 25 years.
This means that the average Swiss person does not view Eastern Europeans in general favourably.
But on the plus side our football team got a lot better.
ILike-Pie@reddit
Can confirm. I also work with some Swiss people and... they're not my favorites.

Actual worst reputation is either Romania or Bulgaria, since we are EU and have a lot of bad representatives who can easily use the privileged passport, more so than Greece. Other Balkan countries automatically are better off, since they have to try a bit harder to travel and have fewer chances to leave bad impressions. That being said, I think Montenegro, Croatia and Greece have the best Balkan reputations

One that comes to mind is a video of a small Albanian restaurant owner that tried to smash the windshield of the minibus of a group of tourists because they left before they were served (I don’t remember exactly why they left, but it was reasonable). The tourists started driving away and the Albanian man hopped onto the car hood and continue to tray to smash open the windshield. The minibus started driving faster and faster but the Albanian man would lot give up he held tightly to the hood and punched the windshield whenever he could. I’ve never seen such insane level of mad determination for such a small thing in my life.
