Anywhere that's an hour or hour and a half commute to London is almost certainly priced at London prices regardless. Many, many years ago when I was looking at potentially moving to London, I looked south, down to Addington, Croydon, south bits of Bromley (family and friends nearby). But I suspect these days even these areas are priced higher than they were back then. Good luck. London's a beast...

I'm always intrigued by this answer. I'd imagine 4x hotel nights a month, *plus* train fares, could easily reach £600-700 a month. Is that really a saving on rent (vs renting in London somewhere a single tube or even cycle ride in to work)? I can imagine it's worth it if you're buying and have a family, but are savings for a single person worth it (especially if you're still renting within 90 mins of London).

Ive done this for 3 years. Yes it is worth it. Because rent for single room is now at least 1k + bills on top. Including food that'd be around 1500? But the flat fee of 700 ish actually makes a big difference. Also my general expenses are a lot lower in my local town anyway. Ie even a gym class in London is 20 per session but my cost at home is 60 quid unlimited sessions. Everything adds up. I even had a mid week rent, those you find on spare room that are Monday to friday only for 600pcm. At this point it did get a bit pricier but still worth it. This wasnt the whole story, I have family friends and community in my local town but still, the saving was huge.

This is potentially feasible some times of the year but there are several points throughout the year where even the shittiest hotel will have demand peaks - so either the price is that much higher and/or the worry would be even if you book months in advance, your booking is mysteriously ‘accidentally’ lost or cancelled and now they’re fully booked, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a reasonably priced alternative. Off the top of my head from recent years experience - Wimbledon, London Fashion Week, run up to Christmas, plus the occasional confluence of a major sporting tournament plus a big name music artist tour.

I’ve done this for a number of years. Office in London, live in the depths of Dorset. I have to spend 4 days a month in the office so every other week I’ll come up and do an overnight. Premier inn hubs are quite cheap this time of year. I’ve paid as little as £50. The rest of the year I stay in a hostel. 4 bed dorm for £40. Ear plugs in and eye mask on. Far from ideal but I can live with it 2 nights a month. I’m going to try that pod hotel in Piccadilly on my next trip. Even cheaper and seems there’s slightly more privacy

I used the pod hotel a couple of times when we were between tenancies and living with family, but I still had to be in London a couple of days a week. Don’t set your expectations super high and you won’t be disappointed, I think. The price was great, but wow are the pods small. Fortunately I could shower at work so never used much of them but glad I don’t have to go back! Obviously ymmv though.

I had to do something similar, but I moved out of my city. I worked 2 days a week on site, 12 hours a day and always back to back. I just grabbed the cheapest hotel or single room Airbnb I could find for 1 night. Commuted in to work the morning of day 1, hotel that night then commuted home after work. Was 90mins drive so was pretty tiring but worked for me. I finished work at 630, went to gym, showered and bed. Didn't bother trying to do anything else because it just made the drive home the following day so unbearable. Also I get fed at work so didn't have the headache of trying to sort dinner out for those 2 days. In hindsight this saved me a lot of money and gained me a lot of sleep.

My advice would be that the cost of the commute cam dramatically differ depending what train line you're on, and the cost of the commute will be a huge factor here. For example, I used to live in surrey/Berkshire area until a few years back, and the return fare into London was about £32 a day. I now live around the hertford/Ware area (a similar distance outside london) and my commute is £18 return per day. My area of Hertfordshire is on a line that's very much on the 'london' network still, so the fares are cheaper. That difference in fare would make a huge difference over the course of a month! Plus cheaper rent than in London (although still south east prices!) The journey into Liverpool Street is about 30-40mins depending on exact station, and the line intersects with the Victoria line half way along, so that opens up quick access to other parts of London also.

Belfast is only a 1 hour flight from Belfast city airport to London city airport and I done it plenty of times fly in work go to a primer inn work again then fly home Flights are not expensive if you book in advance and it takes about 15 minutes to get from entry to gate in Belfast city airport

Depends where your job is in London. Anything on the Elizabeth line works if you work close to that line. Otherwise you'd be looking at commuter lines to the big stations like Liverpool Street, London bridge, victoria, Waterloo, kings cross, paddington, Euston. I might be forgetting some. Problem is once you're in London everything takes like 30 minutes to get to and with commuter lines you generally have to be quite far out for the rent to be much cheaper. So you need to consider this into where you choose. You can also do renting of places for a few nights a week through spare room which is something to consider. Congratulations on the new job

This needs to be higher. The stressful bits of a journey are the changes so ideally you want to live where the train can stop near your work and you don't have to swap tube lines, etc.. If your job is near Liverpool Street you need to see what big towns/cities are on the main lines into Liverpool Street and decide accordingly. In Norwich we're on the line into Liverpool Street but if we want to get into the other side of London it's often quicker to drive to Downham Market to take the train into Kings Cross rather than taking the tube, especially with luggage. I had a job where I had to spend a few days a month in Twickenham, even after a few months and knowing exactly what trains to get on (Norwich -> Stratford -> Waterloo -> Twickenham) it took it out of me mentally.

It is absolutely awful long-term and I get that if you've not lived in London you'd not know that almost everything is an hour away. I have friends who live in a gorgeous house 5 minute walk from Enfield Chase and do Airbnb. Mainline into Moorgate or change at Finsbury Park for the tube. Fares cap out at about £13 a day for travel. They've got an awesome kitchen with a guest fridge so their renters can cook etc and I know they have regulars. Bathroom is lovely too, powerful shower and the house is immaculate. They're a lovely couple. Might be worth looking for something like that?

If you're able to stay at home for the time being and get your feet wet at the office, I would do that initially. Otherwise, having to only be in 2 days a week gives you a fair bit of wiggle room. Like others said, I would look at doing the days back to back to save yourself some grief and book yourself in at a relatively low cost hotel or hostel (the YHAs are pretty good). Once you're ready to begin looking, Northampton and Milton Keynes both have really reliable connection into London and can be as slow as an hour and a half (NMP) or as fast as 30 minutes (MKC). You can generally get a slightly lower cost of housing, and while they are both a bit on the boring side, will stretch your salary. Another option could be Reading. Lots of good flatshares there and you'd be at the end of the Lizzie Line.

Before you tie yourself into anything, just bear in mind it might end up being more than 2 days a week. There can be a lot of "oh it would be really good if you could be in on x day because of y". People will tell you to just stick to the contract, but the reality of the working world is that the people wo are flexible and play the game are the ones who progress. You don't say where you're living currently, so it's hard to give any advice.

Hertfordshire has some high speed trains into Euston (20 mins from Watford junction) and King's Cross (25 mins from Potters Bar) and these train lines serve multiple other towns too, and connect to the Victoria and Northern line tubes. Watford also has a Metropolitan Line station.

East Coast Main Line is a winner for me. I've lived nearly all over North/North West of London within 90 minutes. Best bang for buck and proximity to London I would suggest is Stevenage. But can go further north, Biggleswade, Sandy etc. Good flexibility for travel around London too, for a lot of places it's better to get off at Finsbury Park and take onward journey from there. Destination options for both Kings Cross and London Bridge. High frequency trains and late trains out of London too. Good luck getting to West Mids late from London. Hitchin and Letchworth if budget permits and prefer a nicer place to live. I have been Herts/Beds, MK, Oxford, Coventry, Leamington...

You could also try somewhere like Margate, it’s a long commute but youd have cheap rent. Croydon is fine mid week and some parts are ok (not central Croydon which is grim). See also places such as Staines, Orpington. If you want to be more in London then Tottenham Lewisham and Leyton are cheaper and commutable, certainly for 2 days of the week.

Coventry! It’s an hour away by train (so “closer” than many of the Home Counties) but house and rent prices are only a fraction of London ones. It’s close enough to Birmingham for theatres etc, with Bham airport and the NEC only 10 mins away. It’s the centre of the UK’s motorway nexus with the M42, M1 and M6 all around the town, and is about 2 hrs from Manchester, Leeds, and Bristol so it’s good to base yourself at if your job requires any travel.

Coventry is a great option and I love it for getting to London. It's very possible and I commute into London regularly for meetings. BUT I'd caveat this with the fact the 1 hour trains are horrifically expensive before 9am so you would need to be incredibly organised booking advanced fares way in advance or using the slower train but depending on where the job is terms of proximity to Euston that'd be a heavy commute. For me, quality of life and general cost of living is so much better outside London too.

Northampton. Not the cheapest place but you've got a direct train to Euston and its a genuinely nice place, lots going on, decent town centre. Harlow is very quick into Liverpool Street and rents are lower than other places that are a longer train ride in. Its got a rough side but the people are friendlier than you would expect. People think its worse than it is because it's just so ugly. Letchworth is really nice, and I think gets you into kings cross. Probably on the expensive side but for a reason. Definitely worth checking out. I don't really rate any of the towns to the south west edge of London. I don't get a feel of community until you get to the insanely expensive areas but then those feel like living in a bubble. Plus the trains into Waterloo tend to be very slow.

Depends which side of London but I live in Essex and the commute in is fine. 16 mins shenfield to Stratford or you can live further like Chelmsford and it’s still only 30-40 mins. Then the tube on top. Pretty similar rent prices to some places especially if you live further out and get a bus into the main station etc, just depends if you’d prefer a big city to live in as Essex is lots of villages

Just be aware of how pricey the trains are. No point saving £250 a month, if you pay £500 for the train. Maybe if you have a motorbike or car and work on the outskirts of London it would work out for you, but otherwise I'd reconsider. I'm in Northampton, and many people commute from here (1h train to Euston), but the train is expensive, and the trip is tiring even for two days a week.

Depending on your current location, you might want to strongly consider commuting for the two days a week or potentially looking at the cheapest hotels available to you for the time that you’re in the city. It’s just a thought… If you want a full time life in London, though, then you do have to look at everything from room shares through to renting a flat the size of Harry Potter’s cupboard under the stairs or considering one of the commuter belts as opposed to “London proper”… P.S don’t be disheartened with the dynamics and take the opportunity. You’ve got your foot in the door and that is the biggest hurdle for most people.

Where in London? If in the City then Essex into Liverpool Street or Fenchurch Street is an easy commute. Also in the City you can come into Cannon Street from Kent. (Never used this so no idea if it reliable).

Basingstoke is a boring put possible option - can be as quick as 40 mins. Winchester is more interesting but not the cheapest either! Train from Southampton is about an hour 15 to Waterloo. More housing options - lots of professional house shares in the city centre -, cheaper than Winch and more going on than Basingstoke.

The head of the London Ambulance Service lives in Chester and commutes to London when needed. Said he can get there quicker from Chester than living 7 stops outside the capital.
