Frame bent, pop the hood to check.

Modern pickup trucks can do a lot especially compared to truck of the past but they still have their limits.

Yeah. A one ton ram with a Cummins can tow upwards of 25,000 lbs. The payload is insane too. Somewhere around 5-6k IIRC (I don’t feel like looking it up). However… an entire suburban over the bed plus trailer tongue weight has got to be more than that.

My dad has a nearly new Ram 1500 and that thing technically can tow more than some of the vehicles I drove in the Army 20+ years ago.

randomlemon9192@reddit

Oh yeah. Half ton tow ratings are insanely high nowadays. Most are at or just under 10k lbs. A 2008 Ford F-350 dually has a max tow rating of just under 14k lbs. 90s model 1 tons could tow around 10k lbs. How they can rate them that high? Idk. But the truck itself is pretty light compared to heavier trucks. It’s very tempting to tow an 8k 5th wheel with a half ton. I’d be concerned about stability though with the truck itself being (comparatively) light.

Of course the most demanding thing my dad’s truck gets used for is driving to the American Legion on Friday night for steak dinner and $1.50 drafts, but technically it can tow more than the M998 I drive in the Army.

lol that’s like everyone I know with a truck. Buy an F-250 for the big truck. Use it to buy furniture in FB marketplace. Half ton bed sizes reflect that now. Most are just over 5ft Most people would be better served by a 1/4 ton midsize truck. I just bought a Jeep Gladiator and it can tow pretty much anything I’ll ever need. 7,500 lbs max tow capacity.

Smaller truck isn't always better fuel economy. A friend and I have identical 2003 dodges. Except mine is a built 5.9 Cummins 3500 and his is a 1500 with a 5.7 gas. I get like double the fuel economy he gets despite me having a significantly heavier truck.

Well yeah, of course. Diesel engines will get better fuel mileage than gasoline.
View on Reddit #78291363

Yes but this gets kinda absurd when I compare my old diesel trucks to my pt cruiser at a fraction the size and weight. Which got roughly 19MPH.

SAE tow standards dictate how much the new trucks can tow. With modern engine performance it’s easy to meet or exceed those standards so we have crazy high numbers.
View on Reddit #78113484

EscapeWestern9057@reddit

Depending on configuration, the newer Dodge 3500s are rated to tow 38K pounds. More or less Same for the F350s
View on Reddit #78286989

OhiobornCAraised@reddit

The truck being a crew cab also eats away at max capacity ratings.
View on Reddit #78092189

randomlemon9192@reddit

True. The heaviest towing platforms will always be a regular cab dually. But hardly anyone buys a non crew cab today. I don’t blame them. It’s so nice to have space for your things and people.

*an entire suburban over the bed plus trailer tongue weight* Yeah...I suggest that this is more like poor loading/planning than really way too much weight. That Suburban probably should've been last on the load.
View on Reddit #78075163

Independent_Leg7358@reddit

A 3/4 ton truck is running the hp and torque of a semi. Only issue hou run into with them is how much weight you can carry, which I'm turn limits how much you can tow as you need a minimum 15%ish tongue weight for stability. Let it known my 3/4 ton weights 8000. My daycab comes in at 15,000. That's an extra axle, and 6 tires more... Wouldn't surprise me if the frame is dam close on weight everything considered
View on Reddit #78042897

randomlemon9192@reddit

I hadn’t really considered it that way before. Really puts it into perspective. A new [Ford 6.7 high output diesel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Power_Stroke_engine#6.7_Scorpion) produces 500 HP, 1,200 ft-lbs torque. A [Detroit DD13](https://www.freightliner.com/demand-detroit/engines/dd13/) in a new [Freightliner Cascadia](https://www.freightliner.com/trucks/cascadia/specifications/#tab-3) produces 370-525 HP, 1250-1850 lb-ft.

View on Reddit #78010559

holysbit@reddit

Its not all total load weight, the tongue weight is very important. In this case basically every pound of that suburban is entirely on the truck, which is far beyond its rated capacity. The trailer is whats designed to have the load vertically pushing on it, and in this case its not really doing that at all for the suburban
View on Reddit #78013506

SecureThruObscure@reddit

balance, front and back to prevent fish tail on one end and too much tongue weight on the other end, left and right balanced and loaded heaviest stuff on the bottom to prevent tipping over. It's not an art, but you can do it intuitively.
View on Reddit #78018914

CannibalAnus@reddit

Ideally, you would want the lighter vehicles on the front part of the deck (close to cab) and the heavier to be behind you. Pickup trucks CCLB dually only have like 6K in payload with the diesel engine. 15-20% tongue weight of your fully loaded trailer will be pressing down on the gooseneck, and another 6K pound vehicle just doomed the frame.
View on Reddit #78014169

Tricky_Big_8774@reddit

Almost 6k.
View on Reddit #78010766

randomlemon9192@reddit

It can handle the weight, towing. It cannot handle that kind of payload and tongue weight. There’s basically a suburban in the bed lol.

It’s possibly over the GCVWR. Adding truck, trailer, a Tahoe, Mercedes, and three other cars. He’s likely right around 36,000-38,000 depending on the trailer weight. That’s over the GCVWR for a 3500 even though the towing capacity looks OK. I Googled for some numbers. AI answered: “I looked up the 2022 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty 4×4 with the 6.7 L Cummins diesel, and here are the correct Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Ratings (GCWR) based on factory specification charts:” For dually (dual rear wheels) 4×4 Cummins models: 4×4 Dually with 3.73 axle ratio , 31,000–32,000 lb GCWR 4×4 Dually with 4.10 axle ratio — ~33,000 lb GCWR” The 2022 RAM 3500 has a maximum fifth-wheel towing capacity of up to 37,090 lbs when properly equipped (typically with the 6.7L High-Output Cummins Diesel, regular cab, and 4x2). Maximum pin weight (tongue weight) capacity is generally up to 20%–25% of the total trailer weight, supported by a maximum payload capacity of up to 7,680 lbs. Important Clarification: GCWR vs. Tow Capacity GCWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating) This is the manufacturer-certified limit on the total weight of the truck + trailer + cargo + passengers. On heavy-duty trucks, GCWR is typically lower than the maximum trailer capacity listed because tow ratings include how tongue weight and hitch measurements are counted differently than GCWR calculations. Towing capacity (~37,090 lb) This is the maximum trailer weight Ram specifies you can tow, often measured at the rear axle/event hitch, not by combined vehicle weight.

Given the front bumper I'd suspect that this was the result of a collision. Being improperly loaded did not help.
View on Reddit #78017145

Frreed@reddit

"Should be able to handle the weight", sure if it was loaded properly There's a 6000lbs SUV basically in the bed, that and the weight of the other vehicles and the trailer itself it's 100% over what it can handle. And obviously it can't handle it
View on Reddit #78013807

That Suburban alone is over his rated payload capacity.
View on Reddit #78010761

Probably got too lazy and loaded vehicles based on offload stops. Load planning is critical. They’re lucky no one was injured.
