Ah, my first car was a 1987 VW GTI... only the 8v, so it wasn't *technically* cool. And not having a fuel gauge made for some exciting times in high school.

Underrated? The Golf was literally on every hatchback comparison in the 80s and won a significant number of them. It is the hatchback car noobs think of when they think 80's hatchback. I'd say it's a lot closer to being over rated than under rated.
