It's wild that the baby Lambo is now nearly $400,000. For reference, the Huracan was $120,000 cheaper when it launched in 2014. The Gallardo was less than half the price when it launched.
Regardless, it's in another dimension in terms of performance.
But it wasn't $280k as a base MSRP, and I was mistaken. I can't seem to find a "base" MSRP for the first year, but in 2016, you could get a 580-2 for under $200k. You could get a Huracan for a hair over $200k even as recently as 2022.
2014 feels like ages ago. And the Gallardo was half the car it should have been when it was released. If you were use to sports cars, it was disappointing.
The early V10 was better than the late one. The chassis was never my cup of tea, but I'm not at all sure I'd go so far as to call it disappointing as a sports car.
A lot of it was probally expectations. At the time a 500 Lambo came with an expectation it would be earth shattering. It also looked wild for the time.
My numbers are way off, and I didn't realize it. They were much closer to $200k as a base MRSP in the mid-2010s. So the price doubled in that time. To make it even worse, a 2022 was only something like $215k.
I mean, in theory inflation is a measurement of the value of the dollar. In theory, it makes sense. It's just that it's a horribly inaccurate measurement that's primarily used to make the economy look better than it actually is.
That’s not true. Inflation is literally the measure of the change of the prices of stuff. It indirectly indicates any change in the value of the dollar.
True, but it also doesn't say anything about spending power of the average household at al, which is why it's such a stupid thing to throw around into a vacuum. If inflation is 2% per year but wages are stagnant, people are getting poorer. If inflation is 10% but wages are up 12%, then you don't have the same "problem".
So now we need to know if the people who could afford the baby lambo in 2011 and see if they can afford this one now? Like what percent of household you then, and what percent can now? My gut feeling says this one feels more expensive, but I'm too lazy to look this up.
> If inflation is 2% per year but wages are stagnant, people are getting poorer.
Brother, people who can afford a modern Lamborghini do not describe their income as wages. Incomes at this level have vastly outpaced inflation.
The point is that it’s mathematically & financially ignorant to cite inflation without also comparing to income growth. Both numbers together matter. Either one in isolation not so much.
It *might* be technically more accessible in that there are more wealthy people than ever as well (because it's the middle class that is getting squeezed out of existence). It's less aspirational for more people, but at the same time more purchasable by more people.
I don’t really know how to explain it more simply. I’m not talking about how affordable the car is by some cherry picked metric, and in the most objective terms possible, the car costs the same amount that it always has.
This would only work if wages ALSO proportionally went up.
If something used to cost $280, then it costs $400, but you went from making $28 an hour to $40 an hour, sure that's an even trade, but wages have largely stagnated for decades now.
What do you mean it would “work”? I’m not making claims about how affordable this $400,000 car is for someone making $56,000 a year, I’m talking about how many dollars it costs, which again is the same as 12 years ago.
Right, but the price is an actual dollar amount someone has to spend to acquire that good. People have to get a job to get money, and jobs generally haven't kept up with the same inflation that you're trying to use to handwave the cost of a Lamborghini.
The rich (i.e. Lamborghini buyers) are [getting richer](https://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/z1/dataviz/dfa/distribute/chart/#range:2010.3,2025.3;quarter:144;series:Net%20worth;demographic:networth;population:1;units:levels). By that measure, this car is much more affordable than it used to be. Wagies are entirely irrelevant to this discussion
Ya know that's fair actually, most of the people actually buying these cars are so rich that they make my salary just by not doing anything with their wealth lol
I think notably the Audi R8 was also around. Hard to ask significantly more for what is more or less a similar car.
Not saying the R8 specifically was keeping Huracan prices down, but it does make sense that they raised it once they lost that price anchor
>I think notably the Audi R8 was also around. Hard to ask significantly more for what is more or less a similar car.
That hasn't stopped them before. The Urus and the RSQ8 are basically the same thing. Except the Urus is twice as expensive.
I remember when VAG profit margins were made public on a lot of models. Most notably the Urus had a $100k profit margin, the highest out of every car on the list. Also, the Urus MSRP is $100k more than the RSQ8, go figure. The Bentayga, also an RSQ8 for reference, had like a $30k profit margin at a similar MSRP to the Urus. The Urus really is the laziest car VAG could have made, that profit margin speaks volumes.

For the fucking baby lambo. For reference the 2024 Huracan started in the mid 200s and could touch 350k for the STO models.
The wealth disparity is on full display here. Nobody has just Lamborghini money anymore. Anyone that can afford a new Lamborghini can afford a Lamborghini collection.
During and since covid, the wealth transfer has been insane. That’s part of the reason why cars like this cost so much. My Huracan EVO was $208k USD before tax. The car tested costs almost 3x as much. And people are lining up to buy them. Rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer!
Right? I'm not even sure what's happened in only five years.
But one can't go around lamenting that one cannot afford Lamborghinis any more, so there's only a select audience who understands.
It’s been going on for a while now. My R8 spyder with options 287k in 2020. Mind you it had the every possible option box checked and then some.
Easier to sell less cars at higher profit, or they cannot handle the construction of enough cars due to the Urus and went upmarket as a company decision.
Idk, the cheap Lamborghini and a ZR1X with all the options will be maybe 100k off in price at least. I feel like people shopping for the entry level Lamborghini will be looking into a Corvette, especially when it's clearly the better car in every metric.
I used to agree but it feels like that's changing? Sure some people still buy the badge more than the performance but when you can get a daily driver Urus and a ZR1 for the same price some people have to start considering the value aspect of the Chevy despite the badge
I just don't think anyone willing to spend damn near $600k on a "just for fun" car is making that either-or decision you're describing (maybe a handful of people do, but it has to be a tiny percentage of the buyer pool).
If you can't afford the Temerario, you get the ZR1. If you can afford a Temerario, you can afford to just get a ZR1 in addition to your Temerario and you probably already have a Urus or something equivalent as your daily driver.
Correct, a ZR1 will likely have lower production numbers than the Lambo, will be more reliable, will be cheaper to service, will be able to be serviced at any Chevy dealership in the US, will hold value much better (or appreciate going off the C7 ZR1), there is no reason to get the Lamborghini over the Corvette. The interiors in the Lamborghinis aren't even much nicer than a Corvette with options, a full loaded Corvette and Lambo are pretty close
And also only available in the US, so it doesn't really matter for 95% of the population.
I'm not a fan of either so you don't have to defend yourself or anything, neither are cars I'm interested in.
But Lamborghini buyers buy Lambos because they say "Lamborghini" on them, that's why it's not really comparable, they don't care.
I would say they are, both are recognizable, both mean performance when someone looks at it, both have a heritage behind the badges, they're both good.
> BASE PRICE $382,654, PRICE AS TESTED $585,954
lol - you could get a ZR1 for the *options* cost... & are sacrificing 0.1 seconds of 0-60.
Saying nothing of the *other* fortune you'll save on maintenance.
Different goods and services inflate at different rates. If your definition of inflation is a typical basket goods and services as measured by the CPI. Asset price “inflation” is interesting, as is rent-equivalent for homeowners in the CPI.
Funny because that's basically irrelevant and slow now that the new ZR1 will be .5-1s quicker in the 1/4 mile. Not to mention much higher top speed as well and probably weighs less
What is the point of a 10,000rpm redline if you get to experience it exactly one time because you’re at superlegal speeds? Why on earth did they gear it to the moon?
While it's a huge accomplishment (seriously a 9.50 street car is bonkers), that record won't stand for very long. I'm sure they'll sink their teeth into a ZR1X within the next several months.
I was going to make a comment about how they might be excluding the ZR1X because it's a hybrid but I looked and the temerario is also a hybrid... So yeah this article must be a long way to say we haven't tested the ZR1X yet lol
I'm very confused. Your math ain't mathing.
Besides, this is from MT testing. Not from published third party figures. The Lambo is far from the quickest ICE production car ever made.
How is my math not mathing? That’s the demons numbers. I was just saying for a car meant specifically to be a balls to the walls drag car vs a track oriented lamb it’s super impressive on the lambs part
Just the way you phrased it has me confused. You say that it's a close second with an 8.91 quarter mile, but it's substantially *faster* than the Lambo.
Yea I get what you’re saying I’m just faded off them thangs and phrased it wrong I guess. I’ve driven a Demon 170 when I worked at a dodge dealer and by far the scariest car I’ve ever been behind the wheel of, and I’ve driven a gen 2 viper.
What I don’t get is “quickest gas car.” It’s a hybrid:
> 4.0L twin-turbo direct-injected DOHC 32-valve V-8, 789 hp @ 9,000 rpm, 538 lb-ft @ 4,000 rpm
> F: 2 x permanent-magnet motors, 148 hp, 254 lb-ft
> R: permanent-magnet motor, 148 hp, 110 lb-ft
Would a Lucid Air Sapphire with a gas generator in the trunk qualify?
I grew up as a Lamborghini fanboy and I gotta say i hated the Gallardo until it got facelifted. By the end of its run, the high end performance ones looked amazing, no doubt. But in the beginning it looked super goofy to me.
The murcielago was better, but I just felt like they really looked worse than diablos did.
I know it isn't just "new is bad" because when they introduced the Aventador and Hurucan, I was immediately pumped for each. Idk, it just didn't do it for me. I would buy a basic one for used prices just for the engine though, don't get me wrong
The murci was the Gallardos killer for me back in 05-06. How can you respect yourself and buy a Lamborghini where the doors DON'T GO UP?? Everyone knows that a real Lamborghini has doors that go up!
It's interesting how much time and growth change your perspective on things. These days I still think about getting a LP-560 when the time comes while I wouldn't even look at a Murci because of the insane running costs and poorer performance at the things I like to do with a car.
There is a murcielago worth having but you have to be giga rich
A manual SV. I guess there's only like a handful of them so they are insanely expensive
No, I actually do. My sister lives in a wealthy area and sees the craziest supercars and luxury, regularly sending me pictures and while it makes me say wow...it doesnt nearly excite as much as a well taken care of average 90s car. Quirky cars get me turning around too.
I'm near 40 years old and dont give AF about seeming "unique"...and never have lol.
Are we to a point where 0-60 times are waaaaayyyy less relevant?
All these super cars are fast AF, expensive even for past customers and a little uninspiring to a say the least. It’s almost like we’ve gone past diminishing returns as far as speed.
Personally a GT3 or Z06 would be more than enough. Hell I’d still love to own and probably have a blast in a gallardo or 430. But I guess if you’re into status or just owning the “new new” model…
> As quick as that is, it’s not enough to be the best among gas-burning vehicles. The Lambo lands at third in our all-time records for a vehicle with a combustion engine, behind the Ferrari SF90 Stradale Assetto Fiorano and the 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo S. You don’t have to wait long to claim the lead, though. It takes just 4.6 seconds to hit 100 mph, by which point the Lamborghini is leading the Ferrari and Porsche.
>
frick that headline, sounds like a sweet motor though
People that work at motor trend do it because they are car people and want to do these reviews. So when they doc marks on commuter cars for being sluggish and not sporty enough, just ignore.
