The only Gabriel video/song I remember is Sledgehammer. And Shock The monkey for the song, and Games Without Frontiers (song only also). Aerosmith. That was a trip. Up until that point they were just on classic rock radio, with their Columbia library. Then they did the Run DMC thing, and shortly after that, a new album on Geffen.

I met Peter Gabriel. I used to work in concert touring and the company I worked for also had rehearsal facilities. He was rehearsing there for 3 days. One thing that stood out for me was his humility. He would come to the kitchen and make his own breakfast / coffee and sit down in the canteen. He didn't have a "runner" to answer to his beck and call and was happy to have a brief chat with the guys. I could compare this to so many people.. E.G. a former Motown "diva" who insisted that all crew turned and faced the wall whenever she walked past!

I was just a kid in MTV’s infancy. It was trippy yet inspiring and very exciting. Say what you will about the 80s sound, there was so much different stuff going on. Videos brought you closer to artists where the lip synced appearances on 70s shows couldn’t touch. I loved how it exposed us to bands across the globe we’d otherwise never heard (the internet solves that now). I never took part in any 80s fashion (felt it was pretty ridiculous) but loved the variety of the decade despite some of the cliche 80s gloss.

My brother bought me So on cd in 86 for Christmas. I was a metal head and didn't appreciate it at the time. Later in life turned out to be one of my fav albums of all time. You're right that Sledgehammer vid was way ahead of its time. His videos were always interesting.

I remember watching the Sledghammer video in a bar in the late 80s and a random stranger turning to me and saying "I might get sick of his songs but I'll never get sick of his videos.

The creativity of 80's music videos was something else. They were making the rules of music videos up as they went along. That's not to say later decades music videos weren't creative (they were).

Loved seeing him live in concert in the 80s. He did that thing where he’d lay out and let the audience pass him around. Didn’t realize what a fan I really was until that concert. I stood on my chair and screamed “Peter” the entire concert just hoping he would look at me! He did a little wink in my general direction. I thought I might faint. (And I’m not usually like this ever, took me by surprise for sure)

After the 80's, I almost completely tuned out from pop culture, but I picked up Peter Gabriel 's Down to Earth song in the credits at the end of WALL-E. It's a crazy good melody and chords and the video is Amazing. It's like the whole movie was made as an introduction for the credits. Definitely the way BnL would do it, so I guess surprise isn't everything.

Peter Gabriel had a mix of soulful pop and also beautiful world music. The Genesis stuff was trippy. I don’t think it’s easy to pigeon-hole.
