The CX-50 outselling the CX-5 is probably a combination of factors. The hybrid helps, but the other thing is that the CX-5 is in the middle of a model changeover so production is in a weird limbo with the 2026 models having yet to go on sale.

Reminder that a product’s final assembly being in America doesn’t mean no tariffs. Many products, especially ones as complex as cars, source parts from all over the world (many of which can ONLY be sourced internationally). Those parts need to be imported, the manufacturer still pays tariffs on those parts, and those costs still get passed down to us.

The Escape offers a 250hp option. The Tiguan offers 268hp. The Rav4 offers over 300hp in hybrid form. Volvo XC60 has 240hp or apparently a 450hp (!) version. Even the flipping Kia Sportage offers 260hp... Mazda keeps saying they want to move upmarket into the luxury section and they wont do that by continuing to be cheap. Not offering more power in their best seller can only hurt sales...

It's really not that big of deal for the CX-5, CX-50, or most of the competition. 187 is in line with the 180-200 hp that most of the competitive set offers. Outside of the CR-V and RAV4, most of the competition is being sold with their similarly powerful base engines, and even then there were still over 400k non-hybrid CR-Vs and RAV4s that were sold in the US last year. That's before getting into the subcompacts that are even more anemic on average, but still sell like hotcakes.

If you are somehow in the market for performance non luxury crossover, it's hard to go wrong with a turbo CX-50. It got all the features you could ask for except functional LKAS, with an engaging drive train to boot. Unfortunately, most buyers are looking for hybrid at that price point. Even so, the features are lackluster on the hybrid compared to the competition unlike the turbo. Signed - one of the first owners of a CX-50 TPP.

Well... The dude from Mazda said 1kilo is the target... That's 2205 lbs. ND is at 2330... It's definitely possible. And the next gen sky active engine is going to be a 2.5l instead of 2.0... so it's not a stretch to think it can get from 180 to 200hp.

Hard to pin that data down exactly. Looks like the most sold color for the NA was red then white, black, blue silver. NB looks like green, red, black, silver. To be fair, the one knock against the MX-5 is the non-special powerplant. It’s a slightly modified corporate engine and it’s pretty clear when you drive it. It’s fine, but not amazing. This is the one element where the S2000 had/has an advantage. Now, doing a bespoke and special powerplant would certainly increase the price. It would certainly demand significant development resources that Mazda doesn’t have. For these reasons and probably others there’s really no possibility for a bespoke engine with extra fizz this generation. But one can dream.

Tbf I think they meant Mazdaspeed wasn't serious enough in the same way (but to a much lesser extent obviously) that a Hellcat is more on the goofy fun side whereas a ZL1 is more focused on performance. From my understanding they want their Spirit Racing (I think that's what it's called?) brand to be more towards the ZL1 side and less towards the Hellcat side than Mazdaspeed (as opposed to just thinking performance brands in general are juvenile).

Mazda literally used to make a Mazdaspeed Miata. It's not missing the point if it's something that is totally within the realm of possibility. I'm just saying I want something that's somewhere between an MX-5 and a Z-4, and Mazda already has the 2.5 Turbo Skyactiv-G. It would be pretty feasible for them to build an absolutely awesome car that I would personally drop $40-50K on it if they offered it. Considering they're focus on going upmarket lately, the decrease in sales of the MX-5, and the fact that the current generation is a decade old, it kind of makes sense.

It might. I leased a '26 CX-70 back in early December partly due to the fact that there were much better deals to be had on them than just about everything else in the segment. When I asked the dealership how business was going these days, he said "extremely slow". Now as to whether I think the CX-70 was the right move, deal notwithstanding, that would be a different question.

As a Mazda fan and shade tree mechanic, the inline 6 was not well by me because the damn timing chains are on the transmission end of the engine, up against the firewall. Who does shit like that? If I wanted something overly complex to work on, I'd buy a German car. Parking my 2018 Mazda CX-9 side by side with a 2025 CX-90 (PHEV) last year while I was at the dealership for the fuel pump recall, the newer CX-90 is only an inch or two larger than the older CX-9. Wheelbase is a little longer... But during a test drive, the 90 handles like a MUCH larger car. The 9 is more nimble and has much better steering and suspension feedback. And that's on a 7 yr old, 125k mile car. Mazda needs to knock this upscale luxury crap off and get back to its roots of "zoom zoom" and "the soul of a sports car."

A few things: 1. The brakes have had a horrible squeak when braking since day 1 at 6 miles on the dash. Dealer said it will go away, and the brakes are fine. 6k miles later, it still there. 2. It has gone in twice for electric service. The app that is used to "remote start" the car did not work. I took it back, they rolled back the system to an older version and it worked. Then a month later the car auto updated and it broke again. 3. The battery is shit for me. I have had multiple issues with the range; I could be driving, and it says 6 miles left, then just blink to 1/2 miles and go full combustion. Dealer says that this is normal based on driving conditions and weather. 4. This winter has been awful (NJ). I think a combo of the cold and running heat uses all the battery or something because the battery will only charge to "17 miles" and it's depleted to zero by mile 5, yet the gauge will say that it is 30-40% full. Dealer again says this is normal for the weather and driving conditions. 5. There is a horrible transmission rub at 12-15mph where you can feel and hear the transmission rubbing. Again, the dealer said this is a normal occurrence with the car and nothing is wrong with it. The car is not bad, it has its perks, drives well, sound system is great, technology is great. It's extremely spacious and an enjoyable ride for the most part, but for a brand new highly advanced vehicle, I have my complaints.

I cross-shopped a CPO MDX with our CX-90 PHEV before leasing another. It has a few perks but \~17 mpg, softer suspension and steering and a terrible touchpad infotainment interface that didn't allow for fullscreen Carplay/AA (Pre-refreshed ones) made it a no go.

The brake pads are metallic and therefore will squeak. If you replace the pads you can change the brand or just turn up the Bose. Did your vehicle receive the recall work? The battery range sucks because it's cold out. There's no reason to charge it in this weather and with 87 gas being $2.60ish I just drive it in Sport mode until the spring. Transmission issue sounds like warranty work, maybe bring it to a different dealership for service if they aren't taking it seriously.

I have a 2025 cx70. Many many problems. Mazda “working” on fixes dealer tells me. I am having safety issues. Mazda corporate provides contradicting statements when I call them. My car has depreciated 28% since the purchase. This has been the most unreliable car I have owned, and I owned cars which were 15 years old. I am trading in, and moving on as lemon law is ass in my state and would take up to a year. I hate the car too much to keep that long. I prefer to drive my 13 year old beater than the Mazda. I will never buy any of their products.

I know I talked to lawyers. They’ve said in my state law sucks, so they do it under federal law. Most likely outcome is $10k max compensation, they cannot force buy back. Additionally, I would have to keep the car until the case is resolved. So, it will keep depreciating. In the end I will maybe get $5k back when we subtract depreciation, finance cost and time wasted.

This generation of Mazda 3 has sold poorly from day one. After a first year high of 50k cars it's sat between 29k and 42k sold. For reference the final year of the 3rd gen sold 65k cars and that's down from highs of around 100k. The data reflects my anecdotal experience; it took me a solid year before I saw the first one in the wild and they're still an extremely rare sight. The current gen is a great-looking car but I think it was a huge mistake to go upmarket and more expensive. The delta vs the competition doesn't seem as bad today because the Civic has also gotten more expensive but at the time the $2k-$3k premium was surprising. Seems like Mazda agrees because they've kept prices steady and in fact introduced a less expensive trim last year. The rest of the lineup struggling is more surprising given that I see a decent number of Mazda SUVs on the road. I'm guessing that it's the old problem that their cars are priced for a demographic that isn't interested in Mazda.

The big thing helping too is that mainstream compacts for the most part are still fairly popular in Canada, and the Mazda3 built a name for itself early on here. It's far from being the best seller in the segment or for Mazda and sales are way off from its peak, but #5 amongst all passenger cars last year in Canada isn't too shabby.

I own a Mazda 3. To be fair, I bought it during COVID when I originally wanted a Hybrid Accord, but it has markups. The issue is that the car is too small, fuel economy is poor even on the FWD trim, and its styling is meh. I actually LOVE the interior of the car, but if it took away RnD from the rest of the car, I can see why sales are poor. Look at the Civic, the Kia K4, even the Elantra. They're all bigger, have better fuel economy especially in hybrid form, and they look better (maybe not the Elantra). The future is not Mazda's current design language imo. It's a more boxy look, maybe like the CX-50's muscular look. Major props to Mazda though, they offer cheap trims, interior colors, and even increased horsepower while increasing fuel economy during MY 23 or 24. I really think they should continue to develop one more sedan/liftback. Make it a liftback, give it a hybrid powertrain, make it BIGGER, keep the interior mostly the same honestly to keep costs down except replace the dial with any touchscreen, update the exterior similar to the Lexus IS where it's still on the same platform. Nobody really cares about the torsen beam suspension.

No, they use the same month year over year. In 4 weeks it'll be Feb 2026 vs Feb 2025, etc. and you will lose lower priced fun cars over the tariffs. You've already lost lower priced regular cars

The Z is the main one. You can get into a base V8 Mustang for 45. Point is, there’s a boatload of fun cars with more to offer than the MX5, for less money. So the value of the MX5 isn’t there like it once was.

If you're interesting in sustained hard driving there's a lot on an ND MX5 from factory that you'd need to swap out or baby on most of the alternatives (alignment, oil, fuel delivery, cooling, bushings, tuning out rev hang, clutch/transmission work, chassis bracing etc). Plus once you leave Mazda/GM/Hyundai(ish) warranty coverage for track use gets sketchy. Really depends on your priorities, although the broader appeal and usability of the original MX5 is definitely not really there anymore.

46k for the Mustang. Can get them around $42k new with incentives. The Miata is a fine car. Just not many people want to spend $40,000 on a sports car just to get walked by an old lady going to the store in her Toyota Camry. The numbers show that.

Well of course. But the Miata has always catered to a much smaller crowd than your typical sports car buyer such as the Mustang. Most people see it as a "cute little convertible". It's not "macho" enough for many people out there, but it's definitely good for what it is.

Maybe new yes but I think a lot of the appeal of the MX5 was the older ones used to be the cheap fun sports car. Now they’re not cheap so they’re a hard sell for even some of the most dedicated fanboys. So they have their small market but it’s only going to continue shrinking. Mazda probably doesn’t have much incentive to make a new one with such low sales, as sports cars don’t make money.

I didn’t say all of the cars I mentioned have 2x the power The second list was cars in the lower end of the Miata’s pricing that still have significantly more power. We can nickel and dime all day. The point is, it is expensive for what it is.

This is not reflective of customer demand. The reality is that all of Mazda’s US lineup (with the exception of CX-50) is subject to heavy tariffs so Mazda likely had to adjust inventory/incentives accordingly. Up to April 2025, Mazda US sales was consistently showing growth, but then tariffs through a wrench in that progress.

Rented a CX-50 on a recent trip. So small. It's very cramped if you have anyone, let alone an infant car seat, in the back. I will say it was packed with a surprising amount of tech for a rental.

when i was shopping back in october, i found the 5 interior to be nicer quality wise than the 50 at equivalent trims but the 50 has better features (no memory mirrors on the 5 older infotainment dial design). the 30 was all i wanted though and it seemed to have a bit better quality to the interior than the equivalent 50. ended up with a 30 turbo premium plus and love it.

Mazda paint is shit regardless of model. The CX-50 loaner I drove left me pretty underwhelmed in terms of interior and ride quality, which is a shame because I love how it looks. I’m looking at used SUVs and the X3 is in the same ballpark price wise, and seems like a much better deal.

Funnily enough, we thought they were fairly similar. We’re both younger so the CX-50 appealed to us being less family-oriented(?) even if it’s just the perception. It was a great balance of space for our dog, amenities my gf wanted, and decent steering/driving dynamics for an SUV for me. One of the easiest purchases we’ve made.

That's awesome. I love our CX-50. We were convinced we would end up with a Toyota or Honda as that's what we have driven for years. Even the in laws have Toyotas. Once i drove the CX-50 i just liked it better than the Corlla Cross/ Rav4 or CRV.
