At what age do most people in the UK actually move out of their parents’ home nowadays?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently and I’m curious what’s typical in the UK now. I’m in my early 20s and still living at home. Part of me wants the independence and space that comes with moving out, but at the same time rent prices and general living costs feel really high compared to wages. It doesn’t feel as straightforward as it maybe was years ago. A lot of people around me seem to be in similar situations, either staying at home longer, moving out and then moving back, or house sharing for longer than they expected. It made me wonder what’s actually normal now rather than what people assume is normal. I’m not looking for advice, just interested in hearing people’s experiences. What age did you move out, or if you’re still at home, how common does it feel among people you know? Do you think expectations around moving out in the UK have changed compared to the past?

All of the people are now are late 20s or 30s still living at home. These are the people who have a comfortable existence at home and don't want to leave, and also have had it instilled in them that renting is a waste and better to save. Those who don't have comfortable parental homes leave earlier I think.

Personally, I moved out at 21, bought and sold a couple of (small) properties and then back to renting. Still renting now in my 40s, which I'm ok with as I live in a very nice rental property. I am saving up to buy again one day, but it doesn't feel like an urgent goal by any means. For what it's worth, moving out of home and getting my independence was the best thing I ever did, in my case at least. A friend of mine who bought a house recently (in his 30s, bought it on his own) did so by living in cheap houseshares for over a decade and picking up lots of extra shifts and putting away most of his spare money so he could put down a sizable deposit. It requires discipline, but it can be done if it's what you really want.

I moved out at 18 to go to university, came back aged 21, and then moved in with my now-husband when I was 22. We’re very unusual as the rest of my friends didn’t properly moved out until age 25 to 30+, when they saved up enough for a mortgage or found a partner to live with.

Pros are you’re fucking loaded when u do move out but cons are u end up beefing ur parents, lowkey need to find a girl that can accept that etc.. Moved out at 22 couple house shares, then got hit with health issues at 28 and had to move back in with parents until 31 where i bought my own place. Based off friends and acquintences 22-26 seems to be around the age people move out.

I'm 24 but am currently saving to move out. Decided instead of jumping into renting to save a little bit more and then be able to buy a very cheap small house in a poor area as the mortgage payments will actually be lower.

Where you live factors into it for sure - I'm 24 and I'd love to move out somewhere nearby so I can still be around family, but I live outside London and the rent here is insanely expensive for one person so my only option would be to move somewhere else further away that's more affordable which sucks. The only time I moved out briefly was to go to university, which I feel like is a lot of other people's gateaway into moving out. I know people in their 20s and even 30s who still live at home as rent is just too expensive right now, it's more practical to live with parents and save up instead. Or people move into a houseshare - the few people in their 20s I know that rent their own place live with 3-5 other people or maybe a partner to split costs with, whereas the one person I know who lives in a studio alone struggles massively with rent and food costs. Moving out is just not as easy nowadays unless you want several roommates or are maybe fortunate enough to have a high salary (which most 20-30 year olds do not).

Myself and my friends are all 25-30 year old men. The only lads I know who moved out have done so with their GF, the rest of us are still living at home. The only exception is my friend with a really good job, started an office job as an apprentice and has been there about 15 years.

What part of the country do you live in? Your post sounds like you have convinced yourself to a life of mediocrity? Can you get a promotion at your job, what other adjacent careers can you pursue in your line of work that can secure a better paying job? Do you have qualifications? Can you gain any whilst having extra disposable income at home to get a better paying job? Why don’t you want a partner? Being single is fine, but I’ve seldom met many people who’s actively prefer it.

I literally cannot even fathom why someone would want a partner. Life is 100x better without worrying about another human that wants your attention all the time. And then theres the risk of kids, if you're straight. And the risk they are secretly a crazy person and will murder you. The only benefit to a partner is the financial benefit, which is unfortunately a near necessity these days.

Because it’s pretty obvious why relationships are attractive to people - we’re social animals, we do well with the positive emotional and physical feedback we get from healthy romantic relationships with a robust sex life. Of course some people are simply unsociable, asexual, or more commonly have not been fortune enough to experience the benefits of a healthy romantic relationship and so for those reasons don’t want one/are put off and that is very fathomable too. I can’t fathom what it is you can be fathom tbh.

That’s very sad, it’s absolutely not the normal to hate your partner. I adore my OH, we have sex on average once to twice a day but easily more on the weekend. For the most part, based on statistics, couples have more frequent sex than single people. I’m a firm believer in quality over quantity anyway, and in that regard being a couple will always trump hook ups. When someone knows your body and has experience with you sex is 1000000 times better. I’m in no way saying everyone should be or needs to be in a relationship, just feel badly for anyone who think it’s normal for couples to despise each other and have dead bedrooms.

Don’t misunderstand my comments, not everyone who lives in house shares in a crackhead obviously that’s ridiculous. But from my personal experience you’re at huge risk of living with unsavoury people that will only make your mental health deteriorate further, seen it with my own eyes. How is that classist. Like I said I’m basically one of those people but I’ve chosen to rent a room in my parents house and avoid that potential situation. I have social anxiety also. You should understand. When you view house shares you can just ask the landlord who lives there and what they do lol. A good landlord (which you want) will know and tell you who they are how old they are and what they do. When I used to live in a shared house they were with normal working adults and a mature student. If you get a shared house near a university area there will be lots of people just like you.

A lot of crack heads and weirdos do live in bottom end house/flat shares...Basically they have nothing, and earn nothing, so they live in the cheapest accommodation possible. Anytime you are looking for cheap accommodation/housing, those are the sort of people you risk ending up either in the same building or at least the same area...And that's coming from someone who grew up on a council estate....

Listen mate it’s just how it is, where I live. Everyone I know who’s lived in house shares around here has had to put up with some very unsavoury characters, I’ve seen this stuff first hand. It’s probably just due to the area I live. There’s a lot of beggars and addicts on these streets. But my whole family lives here I don’t want to move away. Someone on my road burst out of their front door the other month and shouted “help” at me. I ran over and she said call an ambulance because someone might be overdosing In another room in her house share. She said she is a cam girl trying to make money and having to live with crackheads. It’s unreal.

I live in Essex (more north) and we basically had to do a deal with the landlord where the people staying in the house long-term interview and vet all potential housemates, and if it takes more than a month the rest of us make up the shortfall in rent, because we had some absolute shockers in a row.

Save. £13ph is roughly 1900 a month. If you saved £900 and used the rest and rent/food/fun money, then you'd have 10k saved up in a year. The 15 years youve been living at home would mean roughly 150k saved. Obviously I don't know what bills you have coming out but thats just an easy answer.

Yeah i actually take home closer to 1700 a month lol, it’s pitiful and I give my mum like 400 for rent, I buy my own meals and everything, I smoke which costs me a lot, an each time I manage to save a bit, something comes along an fucks me completely. Covid destroyed my savings because I happened to be unemployed when it hit and unlike everyone else on furlow I was just stuck with fuck all the entire time. Burnt through everything. Straight after that I dicovered a tumour an have been waiting for treatment for the past few years on NHS, misdiagnosed like 5 times, been dragging on for like 7 years…. I’ve just had it operated on finally at Christmas and have been on statutory sick pay at work for the last month, again, massive hit to my bank account and loss of earning. My life’s been miserable recently ngl. So once a year I go on holiday with my mates, it’s the only week a year I really get to escape, so I save for that each year and fuck the consequences. I can’t seem to save anything substantial. I have little energy outside work even though I feel like I simply have to come up with something eventually where I can gain true independence, otherwise those euthanasia machines in Sweden sound appealing…. Or I wait for my parents to die and then inherit a house that way…. Yay

I know you have probably heard it a thousand times but maybe you should focus your energy on quitting smoking first, not only will that save you a heap of money you will be better off health wise. I know people think smoking won't affect them but my dad had to get 2 blood clots removed from smoking and it wasn't pretty. My uncle also has incurable lung cancer. It's not worth it. Add up what you spend on smoking each year and that would probably pay for your holiday. Say you do quit smoking and can start saving properly, open a Lifetime ISA and save as much as you can in that, for every £1 you put in the government give you 25p. I was maxing out my limit of £4000 a year and getting a free £1000 from the government. Within 5 years I had over £20k saved for a deposit, the catch with a LISA is that you can only use it for a first time house purchase or for retirement. But using that means you can't touch it because you will lose all the bonuses so if you take money out the gov take their 25% cut back, so it incentivises you to keep it in there and saved. Maybe it's also worth looking into shared ownership where you could buy 25-75% of a house and pay rent on the remaining % until you can one day maybe buy them out or move to a house you own 100% of. Hopefully it all works out for you. I was on a similar wage to you when I saved and also gave my mum £250 a month and paid £250 towards my car a month, so it is possible, albeit I live in an area of the country where it's 'cheaper' to buy.

Reading this Spain it actually resonates with me as this is kind of the standard Spanish "existence". Earning 1300, spending 700 on rent, healthcare that tosses you around and some specialities are so overburdened there is a 2 year wait (e.g. for a dermatology appointment). Saving up for a home is unrealistic for most people as homes cost upwards of 2-300k in most cities now. Most people of my age are pretty much clinically depressed.

You say your life is miserable but setting yourself a clear goal and walking towards it is the first step to picking yourself back up and getting out of a rut. Do something you can be proud of. You can do it.

Sorry to hear all that. But if you look at it on the positive side, you managed to use your savings to get through covid, which many people didn't even have so that's a great achievement in itself. I know its a weird one, but have you thought about looking into van life? You could travel around for holidays in your van and then come home for work. Most people would kill to be able to do that. I know I would. That way, you'll also have your own little slice of "home".

Are you aware the minimum wage is a lot higher today than it was 10 years ago? It would have been about 10k a year 10 years ago. And it's only in the past few years min wage has went from £7 to £13. So, at best, he'd maybe have 80k saved. Which is better than nothing, but thats also sacrificing a lot to get there.

Feels like you are drastically overestimating the number of crackheads out there, or not understanding how many people in this country live in shared houses. Moved out at 18 for uni. Moved in with long-term partner at the end of uni (22-ish). Broke up with long-term partner and moved in with parents for approx. a year or so, then met my now husband and moved in with him at about 23/24. I’m now 33. If I split with my husband (not planning to!) I could definitely afford to buy somewhere for my kids and me. But I wouldn’t have been able to afford a place on my own in my early 20s. If I hadn’t have met my husband when I did, I would probably have got a flatmate for a while.

20 years old Not only do I live with my parents but I also work for their business. I personally don’t mind it. I love my family and would honestly feel a bit lonely without them. A lot of these comments are talking about how they don’t feel like they get the independence they need but I honestly feel differently. Just because I live with my parents doesn’t mean they’re doing everything for me. I do all my chores for myself and cook all my food for myself. Then once a week we all have a family dinner together. Even though I work for them our schedules are so different that I barely see them throughout the week. The current home we live in we all bought together. So I still have my share in property but it has worked out way cheaper than rent. Obviously my experience is different to the typical experience of staying home with your parents to save money.

So my sister and her partner got a house last year, when my sister was an 24. I’m 27 and I’m living with my partner, child and mother in law. It’s MIL’s house and she very nicely let us stay when I got pregnant unexpectedly. We have no hope of moving out anytime soon. I work a min wage job and I’ve tried to find other jobs but when I interview I’m always told I’m a strong candidate but there’s always someone better. My partner hasn’t been able to find work either. And my MIL got made redundant over a year ago from her really good job and has struggled finding something else. Every one is struggling to find work. I now live in the south so house prices and even rent is insane. The only option really would be to move into my parents house in wales, try and find jobs there and save up since it is cheaper. But none of us are eager to do that and we don’t want to take MILs only grandchild away so she won’t see him often, when she’s been supporting us from day 1. It’s a tricky situation for sure.

To move out and never move back (in theory) after buying? Late 30s I've moved out and moved home I think 8 times since Uni. Some was because I travelled a bit for work so they were a homebase Looking back I definitely could have bought much much earlier. Like late 20s earlier. But I had the weird notion in my head that I needed 50k deposit to even start looking. I bought just over a year ago with just 10k deposit used. The irony is 10 years ago that 10k would have been a much higher % of the property value than it was when I finally bought and I could in theory have been mortgage free by now. But that's with benefit of looking back.

My kids left for uni at 18 and then got jobs and rented. They both came home after uni for a few months, but that was only to stay somewhere safe and free until they found a job. They'd experienced independence and didn't want to revert back to being children which inevitably happens when coming back home. I left home at 18.

I moved out at 27, but did so on the basis I could buy a house rather than rent. Looking back I could and should have done it sooner. Gave me a lot more confidence. As others have highlighted already rent & houses aren't going to get cheaper. If you're worried about affordability then the solution is to earn more.

Yes, you'd be surprised how many people in their 40s still work unskilled/minimum wage jobs. Developing a marketable skill set (or even a profitable business) takes time and effort. You can't change the price of groceries, energy or housing. You can only change yourself and your earning potential.

Nah it's b/c people don't like personal accountability. They prefer to blame boogiemen for their problems. Tax expenditure is £17k per head so you need to earn about £40k to pay that. That's all taxes not just NI and income. That's the bar. Teachers & Nurses can earn that. Even bin Lorry drivers earn £45k. Pretty much any profession with a skill set can. It's not about earning millions or having nice stuff. It's about contributing to society. It costs over £100k to educate a child to adulthood, the NHS alone costs £4k per head a year, then there's policing, defense, welfare, pensions etc... Everyone is provided for at some point in their lives. At some point in their lives everyone needs to provide for others. That's how this all works. The issue isn't when it's never. By 40 you've had 20 years the workforce and the excuses are starting to get thinner.

I’m a 90s baby and in my teens most of the tramps at school left home almost immediately after leaving school. I’m assuming bad relationships with their parents or they couldn’t afford to keep them so they went on to get their own council houses. Some of the girls got pregnant and became mothers at this point too. This is probably how most of them live out the rest of their lives. The next wave of moving out was around 22-23 when graduates would return home after years of living on their own or with friends and realise they preferred it. They’d usually just get into a job that pays enough for them to comfortably move out on their own/with a partner and go. This lot usually do a little better than the last lot, but usually only really see real progress in couples. The next lot are 25-30 who work their asses off while staying with their parents and move out when they are very comfortable (financially). Usually they have a good job or decent business, a nicer car and a house in the nice part of town. Again a mix of couples and singles, you also see a few marriages in this age group too. If you’re still at home at 30, you’re unlikely to leave easily. At this point in your head it’s too late to leave, and the only reason you would now is for a partner and kids. Your home life is relatively stable and relationship with parents and siblings good, and depending on your situation you’ll probably move out when you receive some sort of inheritance. Due to my age I can’t really comment on anyone 40+ and I don’t mean for my comment to upset or annoy anyone these are just my generalisations from my own experiences and observations with my own age group. Of course this isn’t a one-for-all guide but I’ve generally found it true for the most part. Some extra info that may be relevant is that I’m from a small town not a city, and most people tend to return here to live out the rest of their lives despite where education and work has taken them. Almost everyone I can think of that I’ve known that moved away (different city or country) has come back whether it be a few weeks later or years later. Of course I can’t speak for people I don’t know, but for those I do this generalisation is true for almost everybody.

When you are forced to be independent due to not having parents/abusive parents or being estranged, you make it work. It is possible. Not easy, but possible. I moved out at 17 and have lived independently in rented houses ever since, even though I've been in low paid jobs or else unemployed. I have friends who still live with their parents in their 30s and say they can't afford to move out, but they are prioritising different things from me. I live a pretty simple life, won't ever own a home, don't drive, drink, or go on holidays abroad, but I don't need those things to be content.

It’s relatively common for people in the UK to pay their parents some rent or bills once they start work (especially if working full time). This shows them that when working, nothing is for free. When I was 17 and working 10 hours a week, I had to give 25% of my income to my parents. They could afford for me not to do this, but I learned the importance of paying bills on time when I moved out. I eventually moved out when I was 23. My brother was 18, and my daughter was 19 when she went to uni and, now she is about to graduate, plans on finding work and moving out ASAP.

The ones who moved out are in relationships and the ones still at home are single. Could influence the reason for staying/moving away? Also, in terms of affording property whether it's rent or mortgage, a double income probably helps most people.

The first time I lived alone I rented a flat aged 25. I had always shared up until that point. I did move out at 17 though and rented a 2 bed cottage with my elder brother. I was 28 when I met my partner and they got made redundant! We used the payout as a deposit for our first house. Sold that 4 years later and made a small profit of around £15k. Our next house we lived there for 7 years and made around £75k profit. We have been in our current house around 7 months and are currently refurbishing it. Mortgage rates are more than double what we were paying on the first two houses so that’s annoying. It’s a slow process but we’ve always made money so it’s definitely worth buying. I’d say people tend to be nearer the age of 30 rather than 20 to buy for the first time. We were.

To be honest I don’t think it’s outdated, I think it’s more just the divide between those who moved away who uni and those who didn’t. A lot of my hometown friends who didn’t go to uni still live at home at the age of 26-27. Whereas all of my friends who went to uni moved out at 18 and have house shared since. Not sure there’s a right way to do it. Those who lived with their parents are in a position to buy a house now whereas those who moved out at 18 has been independent for nearly 10 years. I personally have enjoyed the freedom of living without parents from 18 and wouldnt change it.

I suspect it's dependent on the location of your work; if you get a degree that requires you to live somewhere in particular that's not near your parents home then you're going to move out and the only affordable way early on is house share. No matter how tight you are financially, if you want to be a barrister you're not commuting from your parents house in rural Derbyshire. All my friends did the same thing and I don't know anyone who stayed at home for long but it is, statistically, a big thing and has been for a few decades now.

Depends on location. As I have found very surprising on this sub. For me (53), an my daughter(20) even attempting to live "at home" with parents is unthinkable for obvious reasons. Back in the 80s, this meant a bedsit shared by 3-4 people normal. In 2024 (my daughters generation) this means rent to buy and multiple grants to get them established. It truly is amazing the opportunities and financial assistance available to young people today.

Moved back home after uni (age 21) and then moved out again at 27 (almost 28). I get along with my parents, so that helped. I bought a house with my partner - my parents didn’t charge me much rent so I was able to save a lot between ages 22-27 whilst working full time. Before I met my partner at age 25 I was very close to moving out to rent a flat on my own (Essex) - it would have only just been doable based on the rent/bills vs my salary and I’d have barely anything left to save, but I really wanted my own space. When I met my partner I put the idea on hold just in case the relationship progressed to buying a place together. Glad I did. Hats off to people who can buy on their own, my sister managed to recently at age 36 on a pretty decent salary after YEARS of saving.

100%. Places like Swanley that were 180k for a 2.5-bedroom 1 bath for 180,000 are *easily* 400k now. If you're a londoner, you're fucked unless you want to get a maisonette or flat-- and even then!. Anyone who wants to skip the renting stage (and i can't blame them) would have to save up for a house or terraced straight out of the gate will need at minimum 50k down and a joint income of well over 75k. You can fiddle those numbers a smidge but that's not far from the truth whatsoever. I don't have a single mate in this region around my age that's moved out and is paying mortgage.

What will you do when they die. That's no reason to not live in a flat because you might have bad neighbours. You can't run away from everything uncomfortable. I had an awful neighbour where I was before she would play loud music late at night and bang on my wall. But I didn't use that as an excuse to not move out of my parents. My neighbours are better where I am now. Sounds like you need to grow up and stop relying on your parents. You will have regrets when your parents die and you have nowhere to go.

It was. I done bsc computer science then a pgce in IT. Taught for a few years then around 2007 done a masters in AI. I’ve worked since as a software engineer, after a rocky period in 2008/9 from the financial crash I’ve had good jobs and in the last few years with the boom in AI and my skill set I’ve made good money and used this to spend less time working and more time with my family. I now live a life I don’t know was possible with a lovely home. Whether I’d have advised myself to go to uni now though is a different matter. At the time it helped me, right now not so much in my field

Interesting! I did an apprenticeship and furthered my education via the company I worked for. I ended up with a HTEC in Telecommunications, and could have used this to side step onto the 2nd year of a degree course, but I elected not.. The HTEC helped me career wise as it was a preferred qualification for promotion, but practically, it was of no real use. I am glad I am not starting out today and wanting to go the Uni route as the debt people are incurring is frightening, although I freely admit to having a phobia about owing money..

Asda Just Essentials instant noodles are still 25p, which isn't 9p but is still insanely cheap. Tinned spaghetti hoops are 19p in several supermarkets. Tesco's cheapest dried spaghetti is 28p for 500g. I do still have 'cheap weeks' where I spend as little as possible on food either when a big bill comes in or work is slow (I'm freelance) and sometimes just to see how cheap it's still possible to do it. You do have to stick to the absolute bare basics though, anything somewhat nicer is vastly more expensive.

I moved out at 18 was in supported living where my rent was mostly covered by my benefits. Last year I lived back at my parents for 3 months half the time while I was waiting on a flat. I moved into my flat in December. It's supported living so my benefits cover the rent and the bills. Except for £9 a week that I pay. I'm happier being in my own place having things how I want. But 3 of my uncles stayed living at home older than 40. One moved out just after 40 when he met someone and moved in with her. But he was in the position to get his own place for years. My other uncle stayed living at home until he was 47. He took drugs and didn't have a job. He moved in with his partner during covid becuase he couldn't see her. And my other uncle he's 58 and still lives at home he looks after his mum who's 88. He moved out for a few years earlier with other family. But they didn't like his drinking so they had enough of him. He only does work for his brother in law but doesn't look for his own work. And he doesn't have a bank account.

If you have a good relationship I’d stay as long as you can and save. I didn’t move out until 28. And that was only because I had a partner at the time. I’d have happily stayed a few more years and really bolstered my savings. I was fortunate that they didn’t charge me rent so besides food I’d be saving all my money. I know not everyone is in that position. I know some friends when they lived at home were being charged extortionate rent, seemed totally pointless staying.

Depends. The deposit is savings. So you'll have used your income to save up and so might your partner The mortgage is based on your income. The bank will lend you 4-5x your annual salary, so if you both earn £25k then that's £200-250k together or £100-125k together. Obviously if one earns £25k and the other earns £125k and youre looking at a £200k house you don't need the full affordability from both mortgages

The deposit is actually your money. The deposit is your savings. Or like if you won £100k tomorrow, or sold a rare roman coin for £40k etc that money could be used for a holiday, a car or if you wanted you could use it as a deposit for a house. It's not something specific, it's money you have that you decide to put towards a house rather than using to buy a rare lizard or a truckload of drugs etc So you get a deposit the way you get any money, normally from saving your salary. A deposit isn't given to you from a bank it's your money. Does that make sense? If so ill explain a mortgage

I'm going to use round, easy numbers because I'm lazy So let's say you eaen £100k and have £50k that you've saved up to buy a house. So you're gonna use that £50k as your deposit. And you start looking to buy a house, the chespest houses are £500k, you typically need to put down 10% deposit. So you have that £50k, but you're £450k short of the purchase price. You go to the bank and they look at your income and give you a mortgage for the £450k. They normally give you a mortgage for between 4-5x your income, in this case they're giving you a mortgage for 4.5x your income (£100k x 4.5 = £450k)

So back to your £50k savings ans £100k income, that's only getting you a £500k house, and in this world of easy maths, that's not a good property. But your partner also earns £100k, and also earns £50k So now the bank looks at you two and it does the same maths, and it offers you 4.5x your income, but rather than that being £450k (£100k x4.5) it's £200k x 4.5, so the bank is willing to lend you guys up to £900k and you both have £50k in savings so you can look at properties up to £1m But sometimes things are different So let's say you and your partner have kids, the Bank recognises that kids are expensive and you statistically have less disposable income, so maybe they only offer you 4x your income Or let's say you have a lot of credit card debt, that'll impact what the bank lends you too. Or maybe you're self employed, and this year you made £100k, but last 4 years you made £10k, the bank will lend you less because your income isnt as steady Then also with a couple I made my life easy with round, matching numbers, but maybe you earn £100k and they earn £10k, and you put in £50k deposit and they put in 0, or maybe they put in £200k, the bank will offer based on total income but how you divide the house might change (deed of trust)

Mortgages are haram because they have interest (I think, I'm not a Muslim, so no expert on this) But there are muslim mortgages that don't charge interest, but are very similar and work in a similar fashion. You should rent with your partner regardless. I had a high 5 figure deposit saved and I still rented with my partner for 1 year before buying (in London). Because trust me until you live with someone you certainly shouldn’t financially tie yourself to them. It’s very difficult and expensive to force a sale if the other person just goes no. My mum would not shut up until I rented with my first serious partner and within a year I was absolutely miserable and she was completely correct. Never buy with someone you’ve not lived with. The first year of mortgages is 85%+ interest aka rent anyway. It’s not wasting money - it barely costs more once you factor in losing FTB, legal fees, interest costs etc if it doesn’t work out. Always rent before buying with someone.

Moved out shortly after uni. Whilst I did have an option to stay didnt want too (on and off toxic family) They wanted to charge rent (fair) but I said I wanted same rights as a tenant. They then dropped asking for rent and said 'help towards bills' but wouldnt supply invoices just give them some cash. So renting without any rights. How common? In my immediate group not at all. Most stayed at home to either save and get on the property ladder or didn't want a flatshare after uni experiences. Have expectations changed? Depends who you ask. I think the 45-60ish generation have started to wake up to the fact that life hasn;t gotten easier for graduates even if they cant admit too it. I get a lot of 'giving extra help' type answers from friends parents but very few will say theres an actual inequality issue. Its also vastly different if you want to live in London or expensive areas. I know in order to buy I will have to majorly sacrifice on saving or leave London. Leaving would probably be easier and cheaper. But think theres a few people who would understand if I said not keen on it. I love the area I am in and want to stay for a while longer. Flatshares can be horrible. Ive had mostly passable flatmates with a few good ones. But theres no real sure way to live in a houseshare. Tried a share with close friends and it was a disaster. I've found the best luck to be with people who you know but aren't close with. That way if something goes wrong it isn't centre of attention in the friendship group, but if they are really nasty you at least have a social standing card to use as a bargaining chip. Tenancy contracts often aren't worth the paper they are written on. You have a housemate who won't pay rent or bills, won't clean, makes noise at silly hours you are on your own. I've learned you have to compromise a bit. Yes housemates will have habits that irritate you and go 'wtf do they live like that'. But the reality is so does everyone including you. As long as it doesn't mess with your physical or mental health, it can be good to figure out what you need to speak about and what you just accept as being a fact of life. I would say if you can do a flatshare well, it puts you in a much better place for moving in with a partner in the long run.

I'm in my late mid-twenties living in the south. When I left uni, my northern friends stayed up north and mostly moved out right away, and then bought houses within a couple of years and got married. My southern/London friends moved back in with their parents and a few moved out into house shares, most are either still in house shares, renting with a partner, or just starting to buy their first house/flat. I was lucky that I could live with my parents and put more of my pay into savings and was able to buy my first home last year. I think it's very different for young people nowadays and normal to live at home in your 20s and 30s if you can bear it (although it shouldn't be like this!).

I think I was 23 and it would have been 2001. I was working full time but couldn't afford a house share (salary £12k, house shares around £300pcm), but then I applied for university with my boyfriend and moved into student accommodation with the loan paying my rent. Two years later we got a privately rented flat (£700pcm) and his parents had to give me money each month for me to afford my half. I was about 26 before I could independently pay my own way. After a couple of years in the aforementioned flat we moved into the cheapest rental we could find (£630pcm) to save for a house deposit and bought a 2-bed terrace (£136k) when I was 32. We budgeted for that without parental help, then at the last minute my parents gave me £10k so that made things less tight. Then moved up to a 4-bed detached (£620k) when I was 44. That was funded a third by the fully paid off first house, a third by my boyfriend's share options from work and a third by mortgage. It's due to be paid off when I'm in my 60s.

Honestly it’s way later than people admit. I’m late 20s and still know loads of people at home. Not because they’re lazy or anything, just because the maths is rough. Rent plus bills plus transport eats most of a normal salary now, especially anywhere near London. The people I know who moved out early either house shared for years, had help from parents, or moved back at some point. Buying early feels almost mythical unless there’s family money involved or a very high income. What feels normal now is staying longer, saving what you can, then moving out later but with a bit more breathing room. It’s not the 22 and gone thing anymore. I think expectations just haven’t caught up with reality yet.

I will guarantee that all is not as it seems. There are a lot of "fake it until you make it" types on Tiktok. Often, the house is from Airbnb and the flash car is rented. They will literally get a photographer in, do outfit changes and spread the content out so it looks like they always have access to the house and car. Alternatively, they're still living at home but fail to mention the nice house is mum's. Likewise, there are plenty of people who are living where they are because they had parental help. I'm in my mid 30s, and while all my 'inner circle' of friends have bought now, none of them have done it without family help in one form or another, from living rent free to gifted money. In several cases, the grandparents died and left them some money. One couple did shared ownership. And all of us lived in house shares in our 20s while saving up. As for the trader guy - there be dragons. It's very easy to lose a lot of money on trading, especially when trading individual stocks - that's essentially professional gambling. The smart people stick their money (long term savings only, for use in more than 5 years) on the S&P 500, FTSE100 or other similar funds. See /r/ukpersonalfinance for more. Is he, by any chance, selling courses for a trading themed get rich scheme? If so, I will guarantee that's where most of his money comes from. House shares are the reality, you're looking at the fantasy. I bought my first house at 22, but that was in 2015. It wouldn't have been possible a) if I was single (unless you're an exceptionally high earner you've got no chance without two incomes), b) without using the help to buy scheme (don't even know if this still exists) and c) without living in a relatively cheap area. A lot of people say it's luck or hand outs but we both worked minimum wage jobs and had no financial help. We saved really hard for two years to come up with our 5% deposit and solicitors fees. It took sacrifice which didn't end when we moved in - we drove shitty cars, we didn't go on holiday, had basic food etc, but it set me up well for the future. The most important thing is that realistically in 2026 if we were in exactly the same situation we probably wouldn't have been able to buy. It's not a personal failure and I really feel sorry for anyone trying to buy right now.

I was 16, but had been living more or less alone in my Dad’s house since I was 13. He was living elsewhere with his new wife and turned up once a week to give me food money. So moving out was no biggie after that! I moved into a dodgy bedsit with heroin addicts below me, a sex worker in the next door room and a guy who tried to SA me in my first week there - a very steep learning curve. I’m of an age group where moving out at 16 wasn’t uncommon, doubt it happens anywhere near as much now as you have to be in education till 18. Also, it was pretty much a given that you’d have to live in shitty bed sits for a while until you (hopefully) found friends to have a nicer house share with. I think that’s generally become less acceptable nowadays, and people would rather stay at home instead - honestly, I would have if my family situation had been better.

So I’m 31 now, I moved out with my partner at 23, we bought a shared ownership property. We then sold this property around 2 and a half years later to move to a bigger property with a full mortgage and have been here since. The biggest things that helped was: 15k gifted by my father with another 10k when we moved again. 2 incomes, incomes increasing significantly in a short space of time (apprenticeship completed, uni completed). Majority of my friends did not start moving out until late twenties and some are still at home now. Unless you are on a high salary/2 incomes, have been very good at saving/gifted money, I can’t see how anyone managed to move out at all. Renting is a possibility of course but for ownership it’s super difficult. Looking back, If we had not been gifted the money even with our wages increasing we’d have been at home for at least an extra 3-5 years.

I think it depends on if you move to a city for work or stay local. I moved to London at 22 so house shared before meeting my now spouse. My mates back in my hometown lived at home until their later 20s. One friend just moved out at 33.

I'm 34. I and most of my pals moved out at 18, either to uni or into a shared house. I don't think I know anyone who owns on their own, but those who have bought houses did so with family help/inheritance and 95% mortgages/help to buy benefits. I have a couple of friends who rent alone, but that's getting to be a real struggle for most of them. I work clinically in the NHS and most of the people I work with who are early 30s and under had a pretty different experience where they stayed at home through uni and for a few years after starting work and saved up a deposit that way. It seems like most of them don't pay any rent/keep as such - no idea if that's common or not? I could count on one hand the number of people I know who have bought a house on their own, most have done so with partners, and have also had help from family for deposits etc. I do know one couple who both lived with family rent free until they were 30ish then bought an enormous 4 bed victorian villa for almost half a million. I imagine going from contributing a little for food and bills to paying that mortgage and council tax and all the rest was a shock to the system!

I left home to go to uni at 18 and never moved back. I lived in house shares in my 20s and bought my first flat in my mid 30s. I just like being independent, I get on with my parents well but living with them for longer than a week makes me feel like a teenager again. I like choosing what I do for food, decorating my own space, having that control. And you gain a lot of life experience managing living spaces with others. Fair play to anyone who can tolerate living under their parents’ roof in their childhood bedroom until their late 20s and beyond but it would have driven me crazy.

Like you said, with the state of rent prices, I can understand people staying in their 30s. I felt old moving out at 27 but that was a different time then nearly twenty years ago to boot. And even when I was in my 20s I heard of other people in my school being asked to move out at even 18. I don't even agree with that, now or then. But again it was a different time.

For my peers who went to university in different cities to their hometown at age 18, most of us left at 18, came back for one summer a year later, then never moved back. It's quite different for people who stay at home, I know people who are 26 and only just moving out or haven't moved out yet. They've saved much more for house deposits than me (or travelled significantly more!).

I moved out for uni (~19yo), and after that had some short stints such as over holidays or between jobs for a few months, and I was also at my parents for 6 months after COVID to save money. Since maybe 26 I haven't had any long stints at home. I'm now 31 My sister moved back in after uni for a few years, and moved out fully at a similar age. I don't think it is a rule that it should be this way for everyone though.

Well, you obviously won’t get answers from people still living at home. Am 36. Uni move out at 19. Got home then moved out again at 23. Not looking advice I know, but I think other than house prices a lot of this is about the level of valuing risk vs independence. That it’s worse to manor a less “financially insensible decision” that might not work out than it is to stay stagnant “doing the right thing” to save up. A lot of my friends had to move back home at some point. It wasn’t the end of the world or a big failure. People divorce, partners or friends or parents die, job losses happen, annoying landlords (it’s a pretty new thing for people to only move out if they can own a property after all) people have enough of housemates etc, but eventually people get back on their feet and either build back up again or in some cases choose to live with their parents again but with a role reversal. If you have supportive parents who will help you up when you fall then you can’t lose so long as you get back up again.

I first moved out at 20 but I've been back many times over the past decade because I've prioritised travelling and uni, over career and building a life in a fixed location. When I'm back it's usually for 3-4 months while I save and get ready for the next adventure. The least amount of time I've spent not living with my parents is 9 months, max amount of time was 3 years.

If you live in a big city with lots of opportunity, and can stay at your parents, it's probably easier to stay until you're 30 and save up. Especially if it's London. If you work a trade in a small town, you can probably move out a lot earlier due to cheap houses. If you go to uni, it's pretty common to half move out to uni then properly move out to a city after to rent a house share or flat if you're partnered, so 23 or so.

You've lots of good answers here but I'd also mention that covid skewed this up for a lot of people, for better or worse. I'm now a homeowner in my 30s but I went to uni, finished and moved back to parents for a year, then lived in houseshares or rented until covid when I was in a 1 bed flat alone and my mum panicked because she thought it was the end times and I was summoned home (happily, since it saved on rent). Lived at home for 18 more months which allowed me to save for a deposit, then rented a couple more years and bought a house last spring.

I lived at home until I was 26 then moved out when I had a good opportunity come up. To be honest I really enjoyed it. I lived with my dad, and it was more like two best friends living together rather than a parent/child relationship. I was more than happy to contribute towards the running of the house as it helped my old man so he could have a higher quality of life, and it still left me enough to dump into savings. He was retired so was always pottering around the house, meanwhile I was WFH in an upstairs office. It was always nice to be able to pop downstairs for a chat or break, or have tea together after work and watch the football etc. We still had our social lives, he'd be going out on a Friday night with his old buddies & I'd be going out on a Saturday and not be home until early hours. My old man passed away a couple years after I moved sadly, but to be honest I really cherished living with him, and were he still around I'd have loved to have a few more years at home. I had the quality chance of spending time with him, the chance to put a lot into savings while also having more expenditure than I do now. For my friends, most of them still live at home into their late 20s, with a couple either with their partners or living at their parnets parents while saving. Its not embarrassing really, its just the realistic situation many people find themselves in.

I moved out when I went to uni at 18 (if that counts). If not, then after uni I went home for about 2-3 weeks before moving into my first flat with a friend for a year. After that I house shared until I was 30 and then moved in with my partner. But I think it's just different now, my house shares were max £650 a month. Now they seem to be around £1000 or more which is insane to me to live with strangers, and also probably unaffordable for many at the age I was when house sharing. I was able to save so much by doing so but I doubt that's the case now

Personally I wouldn't want that. Doesn't sound like much of a life. I value my independence, I value my time and freedom so I'd rather save slower and enjoy life. I'm also in no hurry to buy a home as we like renting quite centrally in London. But if your priority is to buy asap then staying at home and saving might be worth it for you. It really depends what you want from life. But I'd say don't waste your 20s (if you're that age) being stressed and not doing anything fun as you won't get that time back

I had a bit of a weird back and forth. Lived with them up to 19. Went to uni away from home. Quit uni after a year. Lived with them for maybe six months. Up to 21ish Got a full time job and lived with mates up to 23ish Quit my job and went back to Uni. Lived with parents for four years until I got a full time job off the back of my degree. So finally properly moved out at 28. Whilst I’m now on the ladder, I am extremely lucky though and know that if I needed to, they’d have me back tomorrow at 36. It all depends on how soon you start saving, how much you save, whether you buy alone or with someone else and more importantly these days where you live and buy. My advice to anyone younger is start saving as soon as you possibly can because it's only going to get harder.

I was 24, I rented a room off of a couple I worked with which didnt work out. I then rented with a friend, then another friend. Then I rented a room off of my brother in the house he bought for a year or so. I didn’t save until the last 6 months of living there, which gave me a 5% deposit for a 3 bed terraced. Met my husband, started a family, we sold last year after living there 8 years and bought our beautiful 3 bed semi. I expect my kids to be with us until 25-30. They won’t be asked to contribute on the understanding they save a certain amount so when they do get to at least 25 they should have a semi decent amount of a deposit to buy. I wish I had someone who would have explained how important saving for the future is, even though it was easier back then.

I moved out properly at 23 after going back and forth a couple of times (uni and living with a partner). At the time, I felt like a late bloomer because all of my friends had already moved out for good. However I'm 31 now with a new friend group, and half of them still live with parents. I don't think any of them are in the position where they really need to - they have good jobs and lots of savings. I think they just don't want to deal with the stress of the housing market. I'm a renter, but most of my friends who live without family have bought their own place early on. They were able to do it because they had a nest egg, or because their parents gave them a huge chunk of money to use as a deposit. No such luck for me unfortunately but I'm glad they had that option.

I’ve only just moved out and I am 25. I still miss living at home, I got on really well with my parents so it’s definitely an adjustment but I knew it was the right time. I couldn’t have done it at 18 or even 21. But I just got my first adult job and it felt like it was time. I managed to save up quite a good amount while living at home which helped when I moved. That was a few years ago but it feels to me like a lot more people are of a similar mindset. 1. Most people don't have parents who are still together. That's definitely improved for Gen Z and later. But most people don't have a family homestead. 2. Broken families = broken children. Most people I know would have done anything to have moved out when they were legally allowed, even if that meant living in some council estate or slum. 3. A lot of us were kicked out, hopefully at 18 but sometimes earlier. The vast majority of people came from broken families, from the lower classes right through to the upper middles classes. You either wanted to leave or were forced to. I had an ex who was 29 who still lived with her parents. She was so fucking rich. But also, we're all poor since the boomers.

Myself and all of my friends are not willing to or do not have a home to go back to due to these factors. There's also disability, poverty, unsafe living conditions, and lack of jobs in the area that mean people can't move back home.

I went to uni at 18 and lived out ever since. Mainly because I met my wife at uni, so we rented straight after finishing so we could carry on living together. If I wasn't with her, I probably would have lived at home for 5 years or so and saved up a deposit and moved out. Much harder/longer to save up a deposit if you rented on your own rather than living with parents. It took us 10 years to save for a deposit because we rented straight away. But I wouldn't change anything if I were to do it again. I love my family but I also love having my independence and my own place rather than just a room. If your living at home and working full time, work out how much the mortgage of a house would be that you are aiming for e.g. £1000 per month and set up a standing order into a help to buy ISA or whatever it's called nowadays. You would then save the deposit required in 2-3 years. If you can't afford to save that amount, how would you pay the mortgage payment + council tax + utility bills/insurance which would obviously be a lot more when the time comes? and if there answer is you can't afford it, then it's probably wise to stay with your parents until your salary increases/debt decreases.

Can’t speak for side hustles but a second job sure. Royal Mail delivery offices often require Sunday only shifts. Or contact a national employment agency such as Per temps. There may be weekend only warehouse shifts nearby. These typically pay weekly. If you’re planning on working 6 or 7 days per week then I would look at staying living with your parents - unless you need to move, ie for better employment opportunities that aren’t commutable and all the extra income straight in to the house deposit savings account.

When you're 18, everything seems so far away. All when I was 18, but after 5 years when you've bought a car (not leased a car on finance), got yourself a good computer and updated your wardrobe, you realise that you actually start to have money to save. It's also really difficult to see that if you save even as little as £10 a month, all of a sudden the destination doesn't seem as far away. Money is all about discipline. And I can tell you something, I'm glad I didn't own a house when I was 25 because that would have meant I had absolutely no flexibility to move with my career, which was incredibly helpful, I would never have had the savings to support stupid things like paying for remortgages, I'd never have had the capacity to deal with changing interest rates and I certainly wouldn't be living in the same house. I could have afforded at that age. By comparison. Buying a house much later meant I had a huge deposit and have a house in a place that I actually want to live. There are upsides and downsides to each approach.

I stayed with my parents while studying at uni and for a few years after while working full time. I saved a lot in that time and got my own house a couple of years ago at 26. If you get on well with your parents there’s no shame in staying with them while you work on getting yourself in a good place financially, but you do sacrifice a lot of independence in doing so

It’s been a mixed bag for me too. I also had a few friends move out in their early 20s. A lot moved out in their mid 20s, and got a few now still with their parents or just moving out in their late 20s. I’d just worry about yourself and do things at a pace that works for you!

I’m old and things have definitely changed but I think one thing remains the same and that is that this decision is partly relationship and personality driven. I could not have stayed a day longer and ran off to Greece at 17. Never went back. My mum wasn’t abusive but she was a little suffocating and I just desperately needed freedom. If you don’t have that urgent drive to explore and the relationship is good, staying at home longer makes much more sense.

My families home is not somewhere I can really go back to, it would be very detrimental to my health and to my job prospects, considering there's little jobs in my industry there and I also don't drive. I even needed to take a year out of uni due to health issues, so went on UC and stuck it out in my uni city. Now I am 25 and live in that same city with my partner, renting a 2 bed flat together. We are both on wages near to minimum wage and don't even get full time hours. It still works out somehow and I am still much happier than I would be staying at home, which again isn't really an option. Most of my friends left home at 18 too and haven't looked back. But lots are immigrants or people that for whatever reason, can't go back to their family or don't have a family to go back to. Honestly, buying a place isn't even on my radar right now. I knew that when I left home to live in this expensive city, it would be very difficult. I do have one friend that owns a flat due to getting an inheritance, and honestly, apart from the financial security, it does seem like a nightmare to deal with all the issues. My landlord sorts any issues we have out, so I can focus on living.

Broke up at 29 and went back to living alone in said expensive city and have done ever since. 35 now with a long term partner - we live alone in two separate cities. We’re under an hour train ride from each other so still see each other plenty but also get to spend a chunk of our time on our own. It’s bloody fantastic. I treasure living alone and will never share again unless I’m about to be destitute. The freedom it brings cannot be stressed enough.

Didn't think about money when I left home. Lived in some pretty grotty places and lived on cheap food but somehow always got by. Learned along the way what to prioritise, eg. Rent ,food, gas . Very few gadgets existed and nobody could afford a car so didn't feel left out. Not much left for socialising but we were young and pretty good at making our own entertainment 🙂

I didn't move out of my parents house until i was 32. Rented a flat for 3 years before buying our house 5 years ago. Parents had the boomer mindset until i showed them how realistic it is outside of their bubble. I was saving what i could, paying £400 a month rent to them. I’m 25, still live with my dad. Worked for a few years, did my degree, and recently started working full time. Most people I know moved out between 18-20 when they went to uni but I didn’t start uni until I was 22 and my uni was only a 30 min drive from my house so no reason to leave! People are surprised when I tell them I still live with my dad but I don’t see the issue with it, we look after each other. I think it’s becoming more common to live at home longer and I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing, it gives young people a chance to work and save money (and spend time with parents as an adult, which has made my relationship with my dad a lot closer).

So I think my share of rent was only £375 for a 1 bed city centre flat. This was in 10 years ago so 30 now. Most people I know (including younger siblings/cousins) moved out straight after uni but they went into flat/house shares with 3 or 4 others and all moved away from London. My only friend who stayed where we grew up still lives with her mum at 30.

I moved out at 32. Lots of my friends were a year or two either side of this. Some moved out in their 20s. All based in South East Greater London. There was a stigma about still living with your parents even in your 20s when I was growing up (I'm 35 now), but I think there's less of that nowadays. For example, my parents (boomer generation) moved out as teenagers and that was the norm then, but simply not a possibility anymore for most people. Yes I probably could have got a one bed flat in poor condition somewhere cheaper earlier, but it benefited me to stay as long as I could under my parents roof to save up and buy a nice 2 bed house. Granted, I could have timed the market better as I bought when prices skyrocketed during the pandemic, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I'd say it's quite normal to live with your parents well into your twenties now. Even older if you are single and not earning loads of money. Multi generation homes are still quite normal elsewhere in the world and even in the UK with certain communities. The whole thing of moving out and being independent as soon as possible was a product of the post war economic boom of the last century. If your parents are fine with it and you can stand living with them consider yourself fortunate. Don't worry too much about what's "normal" and do what's best for you.

I was 25 when I bought my starter home as a solo buyer in 2017 - I was lucky that my parents let me move back after uni and pay them £300 a month in board while contributing around the house too. This allowed me to save up in both the Help to Buy ISA and in cash for furnishings and set up costs. My sister is a few years younger than me and lives at home - while she’s been able to save enough for a deposit on a flat as a solo buyer using the LISA, her salary isn’t enough to comfortably cover the mortgage and bills on the property, feed herself and live (which is a whole other issue that someone working full time can’t afford that).

If not for COVID meaning she got to start getting paid early we could not have done this. We were lucky. Honestly right now any age between 20-30 is normal, even after I wouldn't judge. My mum couldn’t wait for me to leave in the 00’s. Left and went to uni, didn’t like it, went back and stayed back at mums for a year until she eventually kicked me out when I was 20. She then moved house so I really didn’t have a place to go back to. So moved in with my then boyfriend and was technically homeless after that relationship ended. Most people then moved out at 18 and maybe popped back to their parents here and there, like after a relationship breakdown, until they got back on their feet. Rent was much more reasonable back then and it wasn’t uncommon to share a place for a couple of hundred a month or have a whole flat for under 400.

I think it makes a massive difference if you go to uni or not. I’m 31 now, but when I was 18, almost no one moved out JUST to move out, but if you were going to uni you moved out partially (into halls or house shares) at 18. Most moved home for <1y after graduating, but then moved into house shares because they got jobs or grad schemes not near home and because they were used to the fun and relative independence of house shares. If you don’t go to uni, I think home stays comfortable (because you didn’t leave and come back) and many choose to stay until they’ve saved for a deposit on a house, or until they’re in a serious enough relationship to want to move in with that person.

I think it is area dependent, house prices where I live are reasonable and it is possible to buy alone, but controversially, I think a lot of my peers are unwilling to make the sacrifices that they need to in order to buy or move out. So many people my age complain about the cost of living and being unable to move out whilst they take themselves on multiple 5* holidays a year, do massive clothing hauls every season and have all the latest tech and cars. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

My (now) husband and I moved out when I was 20 and he was 22. We bought a house in York at 23 and 25. We both started full-time apprenticeships at 16 instead of going to college or uni - and we definitely weren’t earning much. For the first two years I was on about £10k, then £12k, and he was on around £13k. We rented for 2.5 years before buying. When we were renting, we were earning roughly £18k and £20k each. Covid definitely helped a bit with saving, but mostly it came down to budgeting and being cautious with money. We usually had maybe two takeaways a month (sometimes none), did a weekly food shop and meal plan, and only had Netflix and Spotify as subscriptions. We’re not big on nights out, so we’d go for walks and grab a pint or a coffee and cake instead. I’ve always had a cheap gym membership. Until last year we shared a 2014 Ford Fiesta — cheap to run and reliable. Now my husband has a company car through work. Basically, we lived within our means. Now we earn a bit more, so we can spend a bit more *and* save a bit more. Sometimes it meant saying no to a big ASOS shop or skipping another dinner out, but it really came down to self-control. And just to add - we had zero financial help from family. My mum bought us an £80 coffee machine when we first moved out, and we got a second-hand washing machine from a relative. That was it.

We've gone full circle, I moved out of my mum's when I was 21 after meeting my husband, we rented two houses, then when the last house we were in went up for sale, we had a bit of a panic. My mum mentioned that she was struggling to keep up with the mortgage on her own house since her ex left, and my brother moved out so there was no board being paid, so she sold up and moved in with me & my husband when we took the plunge and bought our own house. She has an annex in our garden, and she pays two of our big bills (council tax & water) she doesn't have to, but it's her way of paying us rent and it keeps up affordability in the long run with everything going up. I'm 34 now, I do think it's becoming more common for people to still live with their parents in some form or another, it's just not affordable to do otherwise at the moment (at least where I am)

If you don’t include university, I moved out out in my early 20s as soon I was economically able to live apart. I was working in another city, so that did force my hand somewhat. This is broadly similar for all my peers. I’m in my 40s. I’ve no idea what happens today.

Oldest and 3rd moved out at 19 when they went to uni far away from the family home and found work abroad. Second oldest at 28 as she went to uni close to the family home and stayed in London for work. Her plan was to save to buy a property so she didn’t pay any rent and all food/essentials was provided. She worked throughout uni and saved like a maniac. We gifted her blue-chip stocks every birthday and Christmas and contributed to her ISA for 10 years. At 30 she liquidated the portfolio, bought her first place and managed to put down 50%. She is the most responsible and hardworking of our 4 kids. Sometimes I had to force her to stop working on weekends and get out of the house to have some fun and see friends. I was 30 when I moved out and did something similar. Except I bought a place and continued living with my parents while renting out the flat. I was working a job that required me to travel about half the year so I didn’t think it was worth leaving a whole flat empty half the time. So I gave my parents half the rent from the flat. I also really didn’t like coming home to an empty flat after being on the road. I had no partner, no social life and was married to my job. A fridge full of food, clean laundry and a hug from mum and dad when I got home from the airport at 10pm was much much needed.

Moved out for uni at 18, dropped out after 8 weeks and moved back in. Moved out again at 21 into rental with my husband and then at 25/26 bought first house with my husband. Only 3 of my friends have moved out into rented accommodation. 1 is looking to buy down south where we are and another up north because they’re single.

Depends where you live. Some people live in areas where the average wage is £35k and average house £180k, others live in areas where the average wage is £35k and a house is £600k. If you’re in London, it’s typically in your 30s unless you have a long term partner. Outside London usually mid 20s.

I moved out for uni at 18 and didn’t go back. My house wasn’t particularly welcoming. My sister is 22 and bouncing between living with each parent as neither makes her feel comfortable being there. House shares through uni and the year after. Then rented with my boyfriend 22-27 and bought a house just before I was 28. I just saved a lot for my half of the deposit. With being able to go out/away less during Covid I just kept that lifestyle until I had the money.

I don't think it's that different, I'm 64 now and moved out at 25, most of my age group moved out at about the same time usually when there were two incomes to buy the house/rent i.e. people waited until they got married to move in together or just moved in together. I had my own place but I was rarity, all my friends of the same age where living with their husbands/partners.

I’m 33 and have shared ownership on my one bed flat. I moved out at 23 and in with my then boyfriend. He had shared ownership of that flat too. We split when I was 30 and I moved back home with my parents. I was fortunate enough to have a small (very small) amount of savings and my parents did not ask for any financial help when I moved back. They asked me to put all my rent that I would give them into my savings and grow them so that I could get a place of my own. I moved out when I was thirty one, less than a year after I moved back in with them, and purchased this flat I am in now. If I could do everything again, I’d save more and I’d save early but I would probably have moved out later too. Had I done that then I might have been able to afford a two bed flat. Or I would have waited to move out because then I could have bought somewhere with my now partner.

I moved out at 18 into rented accommodation, then back to my parents at 24 when I split with my partner. Bought a house at 26 in 2001, cost 32k - 2k deposit - think my mortgage was 230 quid or thereabouts. Sold it just before the crash for 96k, at the end of 2007.

Im 52 now moved out out 17 into a bedsit my eldest daughter came back after university and then moved out at 25 to move in with her boyfriend, my middle daughter moved into supported housing at 17 as if we stayed living together it would be hell she ended up in a housing association flat at 19 and now in house due to kids,my youngest left for uni at 20 as he wanted year to work and save and now shares a 2 bedroom flat with a mate hes 28 now and has a great career.Its tougher nowadays as rents are so high and unless you have help its tougher to buy I was lucky as was offered social housing but there is not enough of it available now.

I didn’t go to uni so missed the default leaving time. I moved out at 26, after I a girl I had met kind of cajoled me in to it (it was time and I had enough money). She moved in with me almost immediately. We got married and bought our first house when I was 30. I could afford mortgage repayments but had no savings, she had savings (and well of parents) but couldn’t afford mortgage repayments. Together we were a pretty good combo.

If you're self funding you need a house share. Most people i know don't live independently anymore because it's impossible. Even people who used to live independently don't want to. When I was in my early 20s my dad kept asking when I was going to get a job and move out. Now I have a job, I have the potential to move, but he wants me to stay.

So my son is 26 and he’s just moved from his mums to live at mine. His mum is a vile creature and he’s suffered due to this. So I invited him to move in as a lodger not as a son. I’ve told him he will still be able to call on me for help and support but he’s has to pay his way, but his own food and look after himself. I’ve suggested a 4 year plan tops to build a deposit to buy. He moaned about the rent/board as he said he’ll have no money left for this and that and I sat him down, showed him local properties and the bills and said whilst you’re here the extra you’re paying above what you paid at home - see it as investing in yourself. I’m going to give you an opportunity to learn how to care for yourself, manage your money, sacrifices that are important and appreciate what’s around you. Part of the problem is to many young people are paying nothing or very little to stay at home, still being charged for like they are at school and wasting money hand over fist. So they are moving later being fed this whole story it’s too expensive when what they mean is they can’t afford to move out pay bills have a dozen takeaways or meals out a month, pcp car, Amazon deliveries, nails, tan, 3 holidays out drinking and enjoying life. Moving out is more than possible they just been solid a lie that they can all have anything and everything they want and it’s not true.

There's no set age. I moved out at 21, didn't live there for 7 years, had to move back because of unexpected reasons, left after a year and a half and now I visit on the occasional weekend. You can't compare yourself to other people, we're individuals because we live under different circumstances. It's worth having a serious chat with your parents but I'd say this, living independently is amazing, yeah it costs more money that living it worth, but hey ho, I'd say it's worth it.

I was 25. i moved out with my girlfriend. we both saved 10-15k each which was enough for a 10% deposit on a house for a 40 year mortgage How did we save? we gave up doing pretty much anything. We both worked from 15 yrs old. we lost almost all our social friends bar a select few who understood what we were doing and basically were doing the same. we did manage to have a few weekends away and time alone.

Almost everyone i know moved out mid to late 20’s and bought a house with a partner. It makes sense though, renting/buying alone is ridiculously expensive and then you need to settle into a relationship before buying together. Will admit it can be rough for people who don’t find a relationship, living at home with parents can be challenging to say the least.

You buy it together, so you have 2 salaries for the mortgage (so can borrow more) and 2 people who’ve saved up for deposits so twice as much. You need to start saving at 22 and living at home. Get serious about it. You’ll never live as cheaply ever again so don’t waste the opportunity your parents are giving you.

My daughters are both 23 one has a graduate job and renting a studio flat in a northern city where rents aren't too bad, the other is back at home but she'll be moving out this summer back to her uni city where she's got a graduate job - she'll be sharing a flat with a friend. It's great to see them getting on with their lives but I will / do miss them. There will always be a rent free room if they need it.

I could not progress my career in my home city. I was jealous of my co-workers who still lived at home. Bought first home at 26. Only reason we could afford it was because my boyfriend (now husband)’s mother passed away and left him some money which paid our deposit. I was doing well at work so then combination of my higher salary and his deposit got us approved for a mortgage.

I moved out at 19, lived in shared flats with friends or randoms until I was 33 or 34, then met my missus, we shared in a couple more rental flats until we got married and eventually bought a place when I was 39. The day we got the keys we had £40 left in the bank even at that age. We had to plough all the savings into it. But, six years later we're sitting at 50% LTV now with actual equity. Making that first step to buy is so hard though.

It's pretty normal for people to live at home longer now, especially if they have a good home situation, it's pretty much the only way that a lot of people are able to save for a deposit on a house in a reasonable time - since it's very difficult to both save for a house and afford rent. There's a big dichotomy at the moment, more people than ever are moving for work, yet also more people than ever are living with their parents - if you get a local job and live with your parents your spending will be lower, but if you're open to moving for work you can find a job with higher pay, neither is weird, and both are pragmatic in their own way. I moved out at 28, which did to me feel a bit late, but at the same time I was able to move out to a house that I bought rather than renting somewhere - and I had lived away for 4 years at university and 1 year abroad, so it wasn't like I'd spent 28 continuous years with my parents.

Most of my friends around my age are in that position too. All in cycles of being made redundant after having jobs for less than a year and having to keep living at home. It’s insane out there. I haven’t found enough stability to justify moving out again.

I will miss my early morning coffees with my mum, we have started to argue a bit more in the past year and I have the money and a well paid job now so its time! There isn't necessarily a normal age. I think many people often move out if they go to university, for example I moved out at 18, and never moved back properly except for 2 months when I was in between houses. But often people also move back afterwards, so my husband moved out for university, but then moved back in to his parents for a year or so until he found a grad job and then moved again. For a lot of people who go to university, they often will carry on living in house shares afterwards, which is often cheaper than renting a one or two bedroom place on their own. They're used to it from university, so it's kinda the norm. I personally didn't do that and went straight into a 2 bedroom house, but it was a low cost of living area and it came with the sacrifice that I only had £50 spare a month after rent, bills & food. I didn't have the choice to stay living with my parents as there was no work for me around where they lived. On the other side of things, my BIL has never left the family home and still lives there aged 23. Now, his parents want him out. He technically could afford to live on his own, but he is so used to being able to spend all of his pay on whatever he wants, the thought of losing half to rent (or a mortgage), is insane to him. I think realistically he will be there for many more years. He's in a low cost of living area (NE Lincolnshire), so it would only take him 6 months to get a 5% deposit for a house if he set aside the same money he'd need for mortgage payments and bills, but I don't think he wants to leave the cushy life that he's currently got. Now I'm not saying this is the same for you. You could be in an area where rent is significantly higher. In your case, I'd just get saving for a mortgage. If housing costs are more expensive, you might find that the right time to move out is when you find a partner who adds extra income and makes it possible to move. But in the meantime it's worthwhile setting the money aside for a mortgage whilst you don't have to worry about rent!

I’m nearly 40, so in the elder millennial age group, and I didn’t move out until 25. That wasn’t unusual in the 2000s and 2010s if anything it was on th younger side compared to some of my peers and there was a lot of public discourse about how people of my generation in the UK often have to stay home until their late 20s and early 30s. Not seen it talked about do a while but it was certainly the case, don’t see why or how it would have changed back in recent years with the economy how it is so I’m sure it’s still the norm to be at home well into your adult years. I went into a London house share at 25 and had a really fun few years before finally settling down, but I’ve always admired the people that didn’t feel a need to do that and could just stay at home for longer particularly from a financial perspective. If you’re happy don’t worry.

Great question (finally, got sick of the political shitposts on here) I'm seeing loads of people back in my hometown ending up with their parents for longer periods simply for a few reasons, it's too expensive to live single in a flat around the town/area (most of them did move out but with boyfriends girlfriends etc and then moved back in with parents once it fell apart etc) Expectations? My boomer mother still has the same boomer mindset, something about bootstraps and being pathetic if you live with your parents past 21 etc etc, has no clue what the actual rental market is like these days. Still, I moved out around 25 (I was on very borrowed time after completing my degree and stupidly took a toxic job abroad just so I could escape) all worked out in the end, now 30 and living in Thailand atm. Do plan on coming back to the UK next year or so though, miss it like hell depsite how much people crap on it.

I moved out when I got a serious partner at 26ish Before that I had moved out after uni for a job but COVID hit and I got to move back home and then renting prices went insane, so I stayed home longer I think we're seeing a shift of people living home longer. But don't feel and about it. We're actually one of the few countries who do that, most countries don't move out until they have partners and stable careers etc... We're just going to be shifting into that pattern I think thanks to landlord greed. However, something I recommend is if you're not paying your parents an average split rent price, then make it so you do pay half a generic rent amount and put it into your savings to not touch. This way when you do move out, you don't get the shock of suddenly losing £500 a month or so

I’ve moved out at 23, I’ve worked since I was 18 in a finance apprenticeship role which has meant I’m fortunate enough to buy a house with my girlfriend who is a teacher, so both pretty strong salaries for our age. I’m also fortunate that my parents didn’t charge me rent, because they are well off enough and they know a house has always been my goal and I don’t waste too much money on going out etc. (Except motorbikes are the thorn in my side…)

I can only speak from experience. Children moved out when they went to university, then moved into shared flats/houses before they bought/rented their own. Grandchildren: one still at university, one renting own flat, one living with us (20s)
