What exactly is curry sauce?

I am Indian-American, and over here in the US, curry sauce isn’t a thing, and I also know “curry” means something different in the UK vs how the term is used in india (especially considering many “Indian” restaurants are ran by Bangladeshis), but it sounds good. It seems like a common condiment with food and snacks (especially chips/french fries) and is seemingly rather ubiquitous across the British Isles. I understand it to be derived from western supermarket style curry powder - is that accurate? Is there one standard curry sauce? Does it vary place to place?
