I know y'all had one of these
I found my old StarTAC 8022AA. If I have the cord plugged in, it still powers on, and the buttons make the familiar sound. Useless though. NS flashes on the screen.

I made the mistake of calling my sister from Winnipeg once. I started driving truck and that was my first trip to Canada and I thought it was pretty darn neat. That was the time Verizon taught me about international calling plans. That phone call cost me $30 a minute in total.

I doubt it, that technology has been down away with. They sunset older tech to make room for the newer stuff to work.

Built like brick shit-house. It just worked. I usually forgot to hang up after calls while driving which caused one really awkward moment after my senior coworker called while I was driving a group of us to lunch and just set the phone down.

My first phone was a Sony Ericsson candy bar style that was really heavy and looked like a... massager. Then I upgraded to the black RAZR. It looked like what Michael Knight might have used to call K.I.T.T. After that, a series of Virgin Mobile phones with slide-out keyboards. I think it was called the Sidekick. Loved that phone. After that, I think I dove into Motorola again for Android and have been on Android ever since, the last few with Pixels.

My first cell phone was an audiovox, around ‘99 or so. Candy bar style. First flip phone was a Razr, in ‘05. Razr was so fragile, I think I had it replaced at least twice. I was just thinking how the weather channel was one of the first sites I visited on the Razr, and it’s the one site/app I’ve used continuously for about 20 years.
View on Reddit #77576116

TheGrandMasterFox@reddit

The Audiovox candy bar for PrimeCo cellular (CDMA) is the best wireless communication device ever manufactured. The audio was amazing both ways... It was very hard to discern from a wired telephone when receiving a call from it. The Audiovox also excelled when answering a call in a noisy environment, as the speaker had both excellent sound quality and a higher volume level than any other phone available then. I came across mine last year in a box along with it's charging cradle and plugged it in for shits and giggles... To my surprise it started taking a charge, 4 hours later I turned it on. All of the 99 possible saved contact names and phone numbers were still there, and the call log brought back memories (some good, a few others not so much) of a much simpler time. Before these days of instant gratification most people didn't walk around with a smartphone everywhere they went. Callers didn't expect you to answer the phone immediately and get agitated when you don't. It was that magical time when pagers were being replaced by cellular phones. Now I look back and truly miss the pager days. That time when you could easily dodge calls from annoying people with the "I wasn't near a phone when you called" excuse still worked. As the wave of reminiscing a forgotten past receded I became curious, turning the phone over in my hand I dailed my current number and pressed SEND... it went straight to the fast busy sound. So I pressed the END key and tried a trick many younger people wouldn't know about these days. Pressing the "0" for operator I was surprised when the dial tone changed to a pleasant young lady who said those magical words "Operator, how may I help you?" I almost dropped the phone so stunned was I to have heard that familiar mantra from the past. I stammered out how surprising it was to get an answer from a real human. "You're not a bot, are you?" "No, not bot. AI hasn't replaced me... yet. How can I assist you Mr. Fox?" Ok, now this really took me by surprise. I'm calling from an ancient device from the dawn of the information age, manufactured late in the 1900's "How do you know my name?" I asked. "It's right here on my screen" "But how is that even possible? This phone has been dormant for 30 years!" "I don't have a clue, I'm not in IT, how may I direct your call?" I could tell she starting to get annoyed so I said "Sales department please" "This is a technical services line, there are no sales done here" "Well who would I talk to about reactivating this old phone line, it appears the number hasn't been taken over, right?" "I'm sorry, old phones like yours aren't compatible with the new 5th generation system" "Hmmm, if that's the case, how are we having this discussion right now? Because of the superior audio quality of the Audiovox you could have heard the proverbial pin drop. "That's a very good question Mr. Fox... I'm not supposed to do this, but I'm going to transfer your call to Engineering, they will be able to answer your questions" And with that the last operator was gone, I didn't even think to ask her name. The call forwarded through several exchanges and for the first time in 45 years I heard that harsh back office trunk line warble ringtone and then "Engineering, Rick" I explained how I happened to get through to him, he asked some technical questions I couldn't answer. I said "Years ago when I lived off campus the room I rented was in the basement of a huge house. One entire wall of my flat was 3 sheets of plywood that had several big transformers andj hundreds of weird wood screws with wires wrapped inall over the rest of it. There were a gazillion wires coming into and going out. I said "I think the statute of limitations has expired, there was a telco test handset some technician had left there and I would jump around on different pegs until I got a dial tone. Some of those sounds are still the same" He laughed and then over his shoulder commented to one of his coworkers "Hey, check this out. Cindy forwarded an old Freaker to us" "Ask him if he knows Captain Crunch" I heard the other voice say. We chatted about watts lines and trunking systems for a while and how old cell phones don't have the sim card the billing system needs to operate. As we were saying bye-bye Rick said "You know, it's a shame they fucked up the legacy cell phone infrastructure because your phone sounds amazing!" So that's the story of how I social engineered the name of "Cindy, the last operator".

Years ago, I used to sell cell phones at Office Depot for Sprint. Sprint paid a bonus for certain phones and plans, and the typical bonuses for those premium plans ranged from $250-500. Per phone number. I made about $2500 a WEEK. In the mid-90s. At age 18. Had to move out of state for family issues, and I've never made near that much since. Family! 🙃

The day after  hurricane charley in 2004, I went to port charlotte Florida (next town over from landfall) to help my parents w their house. The whole area looked like a war zone. No electricity, and the nearest operating cell towers were probably damaged.  The only cell phone that could complete a call in my parents neighborhood was this phone.  My star tac actually worked by roaming the neighborhood with my phone in the air to catch a signal.  I let every single neighbor use my phone to call their loved ones to let them know they were alive and safe.  I loved that phone. Sometimes I wish I had one.

I was very late to the cell-phone game - resistant for years. Never even wanted one until it became a work requirement. I had to carry a wide variety of pagers, up to the SkyTel 2-way, for work. When cell phones became mandatory, I had some Nokia candy bar phone, and then a Blackberry which I LOATHED. But they were all company-issued. My first personal cell phone was a Moto RAZR, which I only bought so I'd be grandfathered in to Cingular's unlimited data plan when the first iPhone came out. I bought the first-gen iPhone and never looked back. Not sure what happened to that RAZR.

Same, and a v60c. The time port was a bit of a disappointment as the finish on it aged poorly compared to the startac. But the OLED screen was cool! I was telling my wife about how I’d hook my startac to my laptop and connect to the internet to check email and stuff back in the day. It was revolutionary. I think the v60c was my last flip phone before I switched to windows mobile phones. Man those were the days. I actually found my touch pro 2 a few months ago. First cell phone was a Nokia brick that lasted about 2 years, then I had a tiny silver flip phone that also lasted about 2 years before it broke, then a RAZr wannabe (was cheap).
