What's the best car insurance in Texas right now? Feeling overwhelmed by options
I'm in Dallas and my current insurance with GEICO just went up again. I've been with them for a few years and the rates keep creeping up even though I have a clean record. I'm paying way more than I was a few years ago and I'm not sure why.
I'm looking at other options but it's hard to know who to trust. I've seen a lot of people recommend Texas Farm Bureau but I'm not sure if they're only for farmers. I've also heard good things about State Farm's customer service but I'm worried they'll be too expensive.
I'm also concerned about the low state minimums here in Texas. 30/60/25 seems really low with how many uninsured drivers are on the road. I want to make sure I have enough coverage without breaking the bank. Has anyone had good experiences with a specific company in Texas? I'm looking for something affordable but also reliable if I ever need to file a claim.

Home and auto with Esurance. It’s backed by Allstate. Costs will vary wildly with individual factors but I pay $1200 / 6 months for two EVs with $100 deductibles
burrito3ater@reddit
Fuck allstate, they refused to pay claims en masse during Katrina and had to be sued into paying up. Also, from their car side, they are hard to deal with either as a policyholder or victim of an Allstate customer.
reckoningday1972@reddit
Yeah ,fuck allstate . I was incarcerated for 8 months so I had no car insurance while I was locked up . After I got out and went to get insurance allstate was who I checked with first . They were all transfixed in the fact I didn't have insurance for 8 months . Well, rather than check it out they just wanted to charge me an exuberant amount for a policy .so I went to state farm and they checked out the fact I was in deed incarcerated and didn't use that as a reason to charge me more thing I drive around uninsured.fuck you all state and mayhem too.,(although he is funny)
Creative_Maize1379@reddit
Its aldo hard to deal with them if you have a claim on your home policy
reckoningday1972@reddit
It's all a part of the big shit show now in a city near you . Everyone's insurance has gone up . I thought my state farm policy was absolutely ludicrous until I went shopping . I only have the minimum required . I'm a mechanic so I just fix everything myself anyway and I won't have a newer car because they are all junk . I see the little games these companies play and they all do it and when you shop for car insurance your current provider will be notified that you are shopping . I'm not sure why they report this or what it does to your current policy. The switch and save up to $500.00 / year doesn't work for everyone and if you do make sure to read everything before you go with someone else . Not all policies are created equal .it's very likely the switch and save is dropping some coverage to save you that money. Some will say state farm is high but when I shopped my state farm policy was cheaper than the rest and I have renters I insurance .state farm does have excellent customer service .you won't get better customer service anywhere. But like I said it's just a part of the big shit show.
shivi10@reddit
I ended up using a Car Insurance Companies Chart to compare rates (link: https://clicklink.to/pr/j864bca9f8be?s1=UGC-CI-1qtxiqs) — pretty happy with the outcome: saved about $300 switching from GEICO and got better coverage.
Sufficient_Reason220@reddit
hail claims and uninsured drivers push everyone's rate up even if you never filed. main move is just not being loyal, shop every 6 months. cаrіnsսrе hսb is worth a look for state averages if you wanna see if you're getting hosed.
minionGOD66@reddit
Honestly, shopping around every year is basically mandatory now. Got burned by State Farm jacking up my rates for no reason. Progressive gave me a decent quote but their claims process is supposedly a nightmare. Texas insurance market is just brutal right now.
tipslark@reddit
Bumping to 100/300/100 coverage is worth the few extra dollars honestly, uninsured motorist coverage in DFW is basically non-negotiable with how many uninsured drivers are out there
justhereforsnackss@reddit
Independent broker is a smart move too since they can shop multiple carriers at once instead of you getting one quote at a time
urafunnylittlecunt@reddit
The coverage advice is solid, 100/300/100 plus UM is genuinely the right call in Texas
shivi10@reddit
There is no best right now, honestly. In Dallas it changes a lot by zip code, car, and even credit. I would check Texas Farm Bureau, State Farm, and GEICO first, but watch the deductibles and weird exclusions because some cheap quotes look good until you actually need a claim.

Texas insurance is all over the place right now. “Best” usually just means cheapest for your profile, so you really have to compare quotes yourself, no shortcut there.
rare_with_hair@reddit
I'm not sure on the company. I just request quotes right before my renewal starts. Just like my electricity plan. You did answer your own question on why it's increasing though. DFW has increasing amounts of uninsured and careless drivers, so rates keep going up. At least, that's the excuse they will give you.
ilikejigglypuffs@reddit
Do you remember the company by any chance?
Or we could deport the people who often fall under this category. I am not sure what sense it makes that we the citizens have to keep incurring higher costs and taxes because of our immigration policy.
Own_Effect4448@reddit
There is no best, honestly. In Texas it changes a lot by ZIP, claims history, and whether they decide your Kia or truck is suddenly a problem. I would quote Texas Farm Bureau, State Farm, Progressive, and GEICO, then compare deductibles. Cheap rates get ugly fast when you actually file.
_VongolaDecimo_@reddit
I used StaxiPick to compare car insurance rates in Texas and saved like $300 compared to my old GEICO plan, so def check it out for some quick comparisons without getting stuck making a bunch of phone calls.

Honestly, there is no single best. Shop and compare rates, check coverages not just price, and verify local hail claim history for Dallas. Meet minimum 30/60/25 liability, add comprehensive if you owe money. Get quotes from State Farm, GEICO, Allstate, USAA if eligible.

I wouldn’t stick with the state minimum coverage. 30/60/25 feels low with how expensive trucks and SUVs are here.
AnySchool4936@reddit
Definitely raise your coverage above the state minimum. 30/60/25 feels way too low with how expensive cars are now.
ndbcj92@reddit
I’d recommend getting quotes from at least 4 or 5 companies online. The prices can be wildly different even with the same coverage.

Same here, checking multiple quotes online saved me way more than renewing blindly.

I'm tired of the same answers. There is no single best insurer in Texas. Shop for low rates, good customer service, and fast claims. Check local agent reviews, compare quotes, and look at complaint ratios. Pick what covers wind, hail, and liability.
boredomkills224@reddit
I’m paying ~$200/mo, but I bumped my limits a lot higher than state minimum and added UM/UIM. Texas has a ton of uninsured drivers, and I’ve been hit by an underinsured driver before and my UIM saved my butt.
I eventually bought through USAA but I compared rates through jerry.ai/car-insurance/texas/cheap-tx first to see what was out there among most of the top carriers.

I strongly recommend going to an independent agent. What may be the best car insurance for one person, will be entirely different for the next. I am an agent in DFW and I write individuals with multiple carriers. There is no “one” carrier that is a one size fits all and it can be differences of hundreds to thousands of dollars between one from another.
ninjamike808@reddit
Best or cheapest? Can you bundle?
I’d recommend finding a broker tbh. Let them shop around for you.
suhailmerc@reddit
I've been with statefarm for over 8 years, while the rate is high, I realize how acceptable it is when I go check elsewhere. Texas just sucks for car insurance. I do also have home and both cars insured with the so I get a discount. If you have a car with good safety features, then you get a good rate, if you're buying like a Kia or something, just get the basic no frills insurance, it's the cheapest but God help when you do have an accident.
2Spot14@reddit
We switched over to Lemonade (the pet insurance company, yes). Our insurance went down about 60% through them. Haven't had to make a claim or anything to test out how terrible they are with that and several reviews online caution about this, but honestly, I'm saving thousands a year and I haven't had an accident or claim in over 15 years. It's a roll of the dice, but both my vehicles are paid off, so worst case is I'm out a vehicle and can put that savings towards a new one. Besides, even with my previous insurance companies, back when I had to make a claim, they always underbid the repairs/replacement and I had to do some fighting with them - only to end up discouraged after the fact. So I figure, I'll pay less for a shitty product.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
I’ve always had USAA (Garrison Property and Casualty), most of us have some military in the family, so it’s easy to become a member. Having a good record got me free accident forgiveness. Also taking a defensive driving course online saves 10%, so do that if you haven’t. It just took a few hours.
806chick@reddit
Progressive was the cheapest for me. Just switched from Allstate.
tedleem15@reddit

Agile_Definition_415@reddit
Whatever's cheapest.
All insurance companies suck, just go with the cheapest (reputable) company because at the end of the day they're all gonna fight your claims so might as well save the money for the lawyer.
MrSmokesAlot42069@reddit
Sounds like someone doesn't read their policy contract. If you are involved in a covered loss while not doing anything that is clearly defined as 'excluded' in your policy contract, your insurance company is going to cover the loss. Its that simple. And if they dont, thats what the DOI is for. Some insurance companies (the lesser known ones) do have more strict contracts than the larger/known companies.
If you're referring to an adverse carrier (the other party's insurance company) denying liability, sounds like you're confused about burden of proof. If you don't have sufficient evidence (dash cam/video, neutral witness, police report) to support the other party is responsible for your damages, their insurance company isn't going to cover your damages. No one cares that "you're a good Christian that never lies, so you have to believe my version over theirs". And if you are speaking about the adverse carrier denying coverage, thats what you should carry uninsured motorist coverages for.
SleeplessInPlano@reddit
Paying the lawyer to defend the claim?
TXWayne@reddit
Well not entirely true, I have had Texas Farm Bureau since I dumped USAA back in 2018. Been through two major hail storm claims with them and one car claim. They have been amazing, for the hail storms I had a check in the bank before most folks had an appraiser out....less than a week from the event. They have never fought me on anything and they promptly approved the supplementals when the initial claims were not enough. They paid out well over $100k between the two hail claims. My homeowners insurance doubled a couple years ago but I figure I will go to my grave still ahead of them $$$$ wise in the relationship.
gecon@reddit
I've had the most luck with Progressive and State Farm but YMMV. Just get a lot of quotes from various insurance companies and choose the one with the lowest premium (that you trust).
Highly recommend getting uninsured motorist coverage. Your liability limits (30/60/25) won't cover damage to your vehicle if an uninsured driver hits you or if they hit & run. As you said, a lot of uninsured drivers out there.
PersonalFinanceFun@reddit
If the other driver doesn’t have insurance your own insurer will repair your car if you have collision coverage. You don’t need uninsured motorist coverage.
gecon@reddit
You can file a claim using your collision coverage, but UM can still be preferable to collision depending on the person/situation.
Deductible for UM coverage is 250. Most people don’t have collision deductibles that low, so they’d be spending less out of pocket with UM.
UM coverage is cheap. Getting liability + UM is usually far cheaper than liability + collision with a 250 deductible.
You can also get UM coverage that covers bodily injury to you caused by an uninsured/hit and run driver. Collision doesn’t cover that
Not saying collision coverage isn’t worth it. Many people already have it because their lender requires it. Collision coverage also comes in handy if you end up being at fault.
MrSmokesAlot42069@reddit
Not to mention UMBI. If you are and injured hit by a UM driver, at best you'll have PIP or MedPay that caps out near $10k compared to a minimum UMBI limit of 30/60
BobcatOk5865@reddit
I’d recommend David Francesangelo’s State Farm office in Irving! They will help you walk thru coverages, but people tend to not wanna talk to someone on the phone and progressive you can do it all online, David is my agent and I always appreciate how everyone is nice and professional in that office
Priest_Andretti@reddit
Same. Progressive and State Farm has been the best. I switch back and forth every two years or so. Usually for my home insurance, progressive wins every time because the deductible is cheaper.

Switched to State Farm with same coverage and am paying $750, switched homeowners and saved $1000 on the homeowners and my car insurance went down to $700.

josecolon99@reddit
Don’t know how, surprised the shit out of me too. There are so many State Farm reps you should get a quote. Before my local agent I used an agent that shopped me around but was not close to this.
M990MG4@reddit
Progressive is by far the cheapest for me. I know I am gambling a bit with the customer service aspect, but I have all the things to get a low rate (age, driving history, etc) and the other companies were waaaaay more (several hundred more every six months). My last two renewals have actually dropped by like $15/6 months.
I have 100/300 on two cars (a newer truck and a 14-year-old car) with $500 collision deductibles ($100 comp deductible on the truck) and it is like $750/6 months.
halfuser10@reddit
750 for TWO cars with THAT kind of coverage? What in the black magic?!
BobcatOk5865@reddit
Getting a good rate like that comes with 100s of factors, could always be his or hers credit history, the zip code they live in, and the age of the car. But they are also correct with the gambling of customer service. I actually had progressive last year when a woman totaled my car who also happened to have progressive and they were total a hassle to deal with just from my personal exp

Car insurance is pretty cheap if you are a good driver, and have continually had coverage.
Bodily Injury, Property Damage, and Uninsured/underinsured coverage all have 1,000,000 limits
I also have rental car reimbursement, roadside assistance, and bodily injury.
Comprehensive Deductible is $0 Collision Deductible is $250
My 6mo premium is $820.03 with State Farm.
Icy_Huckleberry_8049@reddit

No-Profession6086@reddit

grizzanddotcom@reddit
I’d like to point out that the 30/60/25 state minimums have nothing to do with protecting you from uninsured or underinsured drivers. Those types of coverage are to protect you if you were to cause damage to another vehicle/property/cause injury. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is separate and doesn’t actually have a minimum as it is a voluntary coverage.
My two cents is to have 100/300//100 for liability as 30/60/25 is quite low and can be eaten up quickly. And in Dallas, you very much need to have UM/UIM coverage due to what you pointed out.
halfuser10@reddit
100/300/100 is insane and so unnecessary.
Holy premium Batman.
nikkinicole75@reddit
You'd be surprised how quickly you can whip through those policy limits... not unnecessary at all if you have assets to protect. If you are uncollectible and don't have shit then do what you want.
nosleep4eternity@reddit
That’s only true if you have no assets to protect
halfuser10@reddit
Technically yeah. But as someone who's been hit by someone with lowest state minimums, it is virtually impossible to enforce/go after someone even if you want all/more than the damage you sustained, personal property or otherwise. Most people simply don't have assets you can take, especially in Texas.
12VoltGuardianAngel@reddit
My premium only went up like $30/no from minimums to 100/300/100. For 3 full coverage cars and 2 drivers
Appropriate-Gas9510@reddit
I have that same exact insurance limits. If i am at fault in a serious accident, 25k per person for their injuries is just not enough. I mean between the cost of the ambulance, emergency room fee, all the hospital tests, etc, that 25k can be eaten up quickly. What if they have to be in the hospital for a week or two, those overnight stays can be almost 5k a night.
Also the crazy thing, you just pay a few dollars more a month to jumo from 30/60/25 to 100/300/100. Its 100% worth it
grizzanddotcom@reddit
If you say so
James-the-Bond-one@reddit
If you have that much to protect, get an umbrella policy instead.
grizzanddotcom@reddit
Many providers will only give you an umbrella policy if you already have a certain level of liability coverage, meaning you’d need to have 100/300 either way. But if you can go an get a separate umbrella policy while still having 30/60 on auto, then sure go do it

I shop every six months. For quality insurance (USAA, AAA, Statefarm, etc) It’s all about the same and it’s all gone up considerably over the past 3 years. I have stuck with AAA as it covers my house, cars, trailer and is within 20 bucks of everyone else. I have had the cats stolen off my truck and my wife’s car was hit well she was at work. Very easy to get both things fixed, ate the deductible on the cat theft, got it back on the car getting hit well parked.

azzers214@reddit
You should really just focus on "not terrible", not "the best". In fact I suspect "not terrible" has more to do with the price and the adjuster and that's about it for most people.
My big tip for you is, it's less important that you find "the best" and more important that you shop every 1 to 2 years so that the loyalty tax never kicks in. You can use the same firm for 20 years but when you finally get to an adjuster, they aren't looking nor do they care how long you've been a customer.
rsuess14@reddit
Find a broker, there's usually a fee that gets tacked onto your premium (like $50 or something) but the small fee has been worth it in my case. I text mine every 6-12 months to shop around.

Your insurance goes up because all the uninsured drivers getting in accidents has to get paid for by somebody one way or another
Ashamed-Branch3070@reddit
The insurance goes up because it’s a scam lol. You are forced to have it by law but the state does nothing to stop the insurance companies from making insane profits. Property and casualty (P/C) insurers saw record-high profits in 2024, with Revolving Door Project reporting a 91% year-over-year increase to $166.8 billion, driven by rising premiums.

I’m a personal injury attorney in Dallas. In my experience, Travelers takes the best care of its insureds. That’s followed closely by USAA (if you qualify). And in case you don’t already have it, make sure you opt into uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage for as much as you can afford.

Progressive
um_i_got_a_question@reddit
interesting. I just switched to GEICO bc they quoted me 1/3 the cost of my former insurance. I don't understand why some companies are cheaper for some people than others.
burrito3ater@reddit
You really have to shop around brahsef. Independent insurers don't check every company. Sometimes you'll have to jump around because new customers get better rates. All this time though I've been with progressive. Paying $125 a month for comprehensive (full coverage) + uninsured + underinsured insurance.
I will give you this piece of advice, shop around every month even while you're covered. I had almost the same progressive plan for $190/mo then jumped to $250/mo (and still the cheapest around) after the renewal. One month later I shopped for a new plan and found the $130 plan, so I bought the new policy and cancelled the old one. They were confused why I did it but money is money.
They're good to deal with, had one wreck and they were on the phone quick. Had my case settled in hours.
