Do y'all ever feel a little weird when no one's around?
I didn't see a single vehicle on either side of the highway for over an hour. It just felt eerie being all alone with no one around for so long.

When I run Calexico, CA to Laredo, TX and hop off I10 to 277, I can go two hours not passing anyone in either direction heading south to 55 when it’s late at night. Run it frequently and there’s zero cell service for decent stretches/no truck stops. Having a blowout down there would be a major bummer.

Starlink is amazing with what it does, but coverage is whatever Elon wants it to be at any particular time. Garmin InReach is an old school device, its a dumb connection, but it works *anywhere* in the world (including oceans and poles).

It’s fairly close to the border and just not that inhabited. There have been a few times where my carrier swaps me over to Mexico for a few minutes when I do have service. Same thing happened to me at Niagara Falls when Verizon swapped me over to Canada cellular while on the U.S. side.

Especially if it's a place you've been before and it's usually busier. Like...did I miss the sign closing down the road for some emergency? For a funny video of one such closure, check out [405 the Movie](https://www.405themovie.com/media) if you've never seen it (pretty amazing CGI for a couple of guys with barely any budget in 2000). It'll definitely make you check your mirrors thoroughly next time you're alone on the road and start getting that weird feeling of impending doom.

night-shift gang come out. Even when I was OTR, I'd get up ridiculously early so that I could burn half my time at night while everyone else was asleep and park early in the afternoon. Parking was never a problem, traffic only got bad when the sun came out. Now I'm local linehaul, moving trailers a few hours down the road and back.

The best, quiet dark empty road. Sun isn't burning me 50 shades darker, some dummy isn't speed matching me to my left for no reason, scales usually closed, parking is wide open when the day is over. 8 years in so far and at least 80% of my driving is nights and I don't plan on changing that

That’s best case scenario. Same reason why Christmas Eve is my absolute favorite night to drive as a night driver. I think it was 3 or 4 years ago I was leaving SLC on Christmas Eve at about 9pm. I got all the way to Burley Idaho before seeing another vehicle. I went the 180 some odd miles not seeing an another vehicle on my side or traveling the opposite direction. Also a ton of times traveling on the 94 in Montana I’ve driven the entire way into North Dakota never having a vehicle on my side. Pure bliss.

As someone who rides night shift and mostly east coast, it is less stressful but the amount of people who drive drunk or tired goes up…. So that sometimes frustrates me but I’ll take it any day… unless you’re going through a big city best time to leave is around 2-5 pm and drive the whole shift. Sleep in always get a spot and be able to get to receivers or shippers early without it bothering you’re schedule if you can keep one lol

Shit can get really weird out there when you are driving for hours especially at night. I had a night where I was looking at my GPS to see how far I was from my destination. When I looked back at it again after a few minutes somewhere around 50 miles had been added to the distance. I was on a straight road with no turns. I was convinced I had just had a premonition. Then around an hour later my GPS hit the mileage I saw the first time and soon after I hit a deer. It was a really weird night.

Humble 4 wheeler here. Your pic is so good I had to share a story. I was driving in a setting like this around 1:00 am but it was cold, snowing pretty good, and a little slick. Hadn’t seen a sign of life for *at least* a half hour. No vehicles, no houses, no lights. This was before cell phones. CB was on, ch 19. Dead air. Out of the blue comes a voice that says “Eastbound, you got a dead deer in the right lane just ahead of you.” I didn’t know if they were talking to me but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to get into the left lane, and as I changed lanes, a dead deer appeared on the road in front of me. I just missed it by what felt like inches. I hopped on the mic and thanked whoever gave me the warning, but there was no response. Only the dead air for another hour or so before I saw signs of life again. That gave me plenty of time to think how fucked I would have been if I had hit that deer out there. I still wonder where that voice came from.

When I was in my first winter around 2-3 months into my trucking career, I was on a state highway in Iowa. Completely covered in snow. Then, the blizzard hit. I was lucky I was heavy and cautious. I tried to push to make my appointment and ended up missing it anyway. It was a good lesson not to drive when the roads are empty and to avoid pushing through dangerous weather for freight. I had to t-call it in Gary, IN after all of that. The consignee staff went home early. I was 30 minutes late.
