Mercedes is one of the most German brands ever.
Moving it to the US would definitely not go well with the people of Germany and the German government, which I assume is also one of their more sizeable markets. US consumers probably don’t care too much where the HQ is. People buying a Mercedes states side know they’re buying a German car.

It's actually very wrong to assume that the EU or Germany is the largest market. China overall then EU followed by the SUVs to America. Which is a very large profit margin for MB.
Defintely so. I won’t get too far into it because it’ll get political and just likely spew out some opinions from me that a lot of Americans won’t agree with but one of the main reasons why European brands have a harder time bending over backwards for the U.S. and U.S. residents is because they had to put in a lot more effort to be favored in the U.S. as much as they are then American car brands did.
Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s part of the reason. Would make less sense to have various cars I.e. the g wagon made in Germany if theh moved the other hq to the u.s. too

Not sure if it’s just known about or the E.U. Has said theyll enforce it but there’s mention of a 103 billion of covered tariffs fee by European car brands that they could charge the U.S. if they chose to.
Every country has a large toolbox at its disposal for dealing with the usa. Its how a matter of how much they want to affect their own citizens as well.

I spent 4 months in italy, driving, working with people. The cost to register, insure american vehicles in italy at least is reserved for the wealthly. Our higher HP engines carry a higher premium over there.

The irony is most Americans don’t even respect Mercedes to the level Donald thinks they do. It’s the brand of CLAs and poor credit to most young people. The Escalade and Suburban commands the most respect from the typical American. Two vehicles already in most GSA government vehicle fleets…
Not sure what Americans you’ve hung around lol or heard of. I’ve never met anyone American or not who thinks mercedes is CLA centered because the brand sells a very diverse lineup.

Exactly lol. Litearly the U.S. started a trade war and then said hey lets tell European brands to move here in exchange of not screwing them over because were mad about the amount of power we have.

The trade was "you can have access to our market of 1B+ consumers and labourers, but you must help us develop our domestic industry" which in hindsight was a completely astute policy to put in place. That those companies saw short term $$$ and not national loyalties is and was completely predictable
That never applied to companies outside the auto sector, and JV only applies to the local operation.
Apple has always operated fully independently in China.
Not surprising but, I don’t see the harm in asking especially since they already agreed to make a substantial investment in the US. Plus the US is the biggest market for MB behind China.
Because MB is a company with a pretty solid German identity. They don't make cars, they make *German* cars. They're from Germany, where Germans, like the founders of the company and most of their workers, live. If you ever go to Stuttgart and visit their stuff there, you'll also see that the company has pretty strong roots in the city and they proudly call it home. They're not gonna leave that. I mean not without an absolutely *enormous* financial incentive that's good enough to risk what would most definitely be seen as a traitorous move. Because they're a company after all and companies like money, so there.
It's only slightly worse than asking BMW, *Bayerische* Motorenwerke, to move their HQ to Hamburg.

It’s really Europe genereally speaking but if you compare country by country it’s the U.S.

I'm trying not to break the politics rule, but the current admin seems to make decisions with very little concern for their consequences.
I guarantee you Donald wanted the personal victory, and also to have the US government start ordering fleets of Mercedes benzes because the Russians + North Koreans have them in their vip fleets. And it would be legal cause magically, Mercedes is a “US brand”

Unpopular opinion but Mercedes models made in Germany are way better than the American made ones. The Germans have been building them longer and have better quality control.
Pretty much across the board on all manufacturers, to be honest. I think the only car where I've noticed QC is still quite high in the US is the Kentucky built Lexus ES.

Ah yes. Become a Chinese brand in a lot of people’s eyes, pay for relocation for a bunch of their Germany based emoloyees and their family, and start labeling parts that had Germany on them at first with China.
That’s a pretty good saying. Makes a lot of sense too, when you’ll say a lot of various things it defintely commuincated there’s a lack of analytical intelligence and lack of understanding of the value for words.
BMW South Africa already runs at 100% production making the X3. They've been doing it for over a year after shifting production from the 3 series to the X3 in response to the increased demand for crossovers outside the US.
I work for BMW in Canada. 100% of all X3’s that have come into Canada in the last 11 years have come from the states. BMW is paying tariffs on all of these cars coming into Canada. X3’s, X5’s, x6’ and X7. 49% of the cars sold in Canada are currently being produced in the states and affected by counter tariffs . We will see X3’s coming from South Africa in the next month or 2. This will just be the X3 30 models to start. This will inevitably cost jobs in the states. Subaru was first to do such a move after tariffs were introduced.

Why on earth would they do that? That would require frequently bringing in worldwide employees. You know DHS would incompetently raid the HQ just like the Hyundai plant in Georgia.
They already have the US operations headquarters in Sandy Springs, other than pettiness, why even bother asking them to move their global headquarters.
