Worse ? Last I checked it was Britain that introduced modern infrastructure such as railways and ports, codified laws, created universities, introduce human rights (banning the legal act of burning your wife alive if she was unfaithful) etc

Meanwhile the same colonisers [didn't respect said human rights](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_genocide) and had no problems killing the population of their colonies. The instability we see in large swathes of Africa today is precisely due to the damage caused to them while colonised. Haiti (not Africa) literally had to pay France until 1947 because they got independence which fucking crippled their economy. Colonisation did far more damage than it did good. Read up on some history lmao.

Modern colonialism would be much more humane  Dude many parts of Africa practice colonization, and the richest parts of Africa today were once under colonial rule. This idea that colonialism leads to poverty is simply a myth  Dude if your argument is that France sucks then I agree
View on Reddit #77227701

ARandomDouchy@reddit

> Modern colonialism would be much more humane It wouldn't though. Former colonial nations, especially France, benefit from their former colonies being unstable. Nothing would change if they had direct control as opposed to their indirect control today. > The richest parts of Africa today were under colonial rule And? They would've certainly been richer had they not been colonised. Not to mention even the richest African countries have a significantly worse quality of life than even the poorest European nations. Colonialism does lead to poverty. The proof is literally modern Africa. > Dude if your argument is that France sucks then I agree  Yeah, of course they suck. Because they exploited their former colonies and still continue to do so today. Glad we're in agreement, then

Except America has “colonies” like puerto which we are very generous with. Like I said France just sucks in every way.  “They would have been richer if they weren’t colonized” zero evidence to back that up.  Africa having a terrible quality of life has been the norm since forever  Dude Africa is just as guilty of colonialism the don’t get a pass because they were bad at it
View on Reddit #77230718

ARandomDouchy@reddit

Never said Africa wasn't guilty of colonisation. Don't know why you're saying shit I didn't ever say. Puerto Rico isn't a colony. They get treated like US citizens and get the same rights as them. Not to mention, The majority of Puerto Ricans do not desire independence which is a strong contrast to Africa and Asia's colonisation by Europe. The most Puerto Ricans want is statehood. Yes, the former colonies would've been richer had they not been colonised. Britain stole billions, maybe even trillions from India alone, let alone their other colonies. Or do you really think they weren't extracting any value and resources out of them?
View on Reddit #77231964

JustChillin3456@reddit

I never said you didn’t say that, I reminded you of that fact  “Not a colony” it’s debatable but fine call it a territory and grant them citizenship would you be happy with that form of colonialism  ?  “Britain stole” dude America and Europe have given over a trillion dollars to Africa , saving almost 100 million lives in aid and medical care. A 19 year old changes goal every other day. > Politics lol > World view Lmao even > Any other shit people in a relationship talk about People in a relationship function as a unit. 19 year olds are raeely emotionally mature to not when to depend on their partner for everything, and a 32 year old doesn't really need a 19 year old for anything besides sex, having a clean house and food.

Hobbies I've shared with people 20 years older and younger include fishing, D & D, video games, hiking, cooking, flying, woodworking, and martial arts. I've also shared interest in pieces of media with people of vastly different ages, books, movies, and TV are fun to talk about. When I was young and Breaking Bad was coming out I loved geeking out about it every week with this guy from work who was 55.
View on Reddit #77174094

Hobbies are usually a requirement for friendship. Not necesirally a relationship. You don't need a romanric relationship to enjoy a hobby with someon The majority of 19 year old women don't fish, olat dnd, hike, fly, do material arts or woodwork. And good luck trying to watch -or god forbid read- the same slop they watch.

You asked for some shared interests and hobbies 19 year olds and 32 year olds share, I provided some. I'm not really tuned into the dating market, I've been with the same partner for a long time, I don't really know what people want in dating right now, just answering that part of your question -- for what it's worth the only hobby I listed I haven't done with women is woodworking, if you seek out people who like hobbies you unsurprisingly find a lot of them. I've watched shows and read books recommended by zoomer friends, some of the stuff they're into these days is quite good!

I mean if you're asking for interests groups have in common *on average* that's pretty useless for forming friendships or relationships, those are about the individuals involved, not demographics. Asking what the average 30-something and the average 19 year old have in common is pretty useless for determining why any individual pair of people get on with each other.
View on Reddit #77175292

I didn't ask what the average 30 something and the average 19 year old have in common. I asked what hobby the average 30 something and the average 19 IN A RELATIONSHIP, have in common. Which is usually either squat, or something loose (eg gaming).
View on Reddit #77175500

Moblin81@reddit

Based on your description, what hobbies would a 30 year old man and woman even have in common with each other? Most hobbies are skewed more by gender than by age so if you need to have a ton in common, the real issue is being straight rather than the age gap.
View on Reddit #77255099

theyeshman@reddit

I'd imagine on average it's not any one specific hobby or interest, because on average people don't share any one specific hobby or interest. I'd guess it's a different set for each relationship, and far more than "squat" or one broad sedentary hobby, I don't know anyone relationships with that little in common. I mean not to sound a certain way this does remove the agency of people we consider adults to do the things people should have a choice in. Like yeah this is a slippery conversation but like at what time do we allow people to live their own lives and not live under the rule of what most people think is ok or not? Like what if most of the people agree with something that you wouldn't agree with. Would you want it enforced? I Think this is one of those "not my clown not my circus" kinda deals. Like when does the age gap also stop mattering? Like what if the people were 50 and 65. Are we going to say their relationship is wrong due to an age gap? These are real questions that no one can agree upon. I think it's just best if people just go "I am not putting my dick in either of these people and their sex life is not mine and I know nothing of their relationship." It's just one of those societal hang ups we all go through. Another thing is what if the experience gap was the 40 year old is a virgin and has dated no one and the 18 year old has had a ton of sex and dated many people. Another thing to take into account is what if they have a ton in common personally and likes wise. Like if they both like Disney movies, and the same music, and wrestling, and have a common hobby interest while also wanting the same thing out of life? Relationships are just hard in general. Either way just trying to engage in conversation on a message board. Not trying to sound antagonistic.

You would think that but [https://versustexas.com/blog/age-of-consent-by-state/](https://versustexas.com/blog/age-of-consent-by-state/) according to this website half the states are 16. Why do I know this? I like to do a little bit of trolling with sensitive subjects to my friends because they're my friends and messing with my friends is just what I do cause it be who I am. (also it is super important to know this shit. You never know what will happen so safety is always important.) That in mind the conversation still comes up of what the correct age is cause yes age of consent is important and should be followed but to know I can just cross a state line and skirt that number by a year is fucking strange and insane. We should have a consistent age of consent. The problem is that people do not agree what is and is not the correct age because a year is not a large difference of time for most people. 5 is a decent amount of time and 10 is even larger. People can change in 5 years time. It's one of the reasons some marriages end in the first 5 years and a quarter or so in the first 10. People do not expect that change. Also another point of observation is that not everyone ages mentally the same way. Some people are just so fucking stupid and childish. I know many people in my family alone that should not be having kids and are just blasting out demon spawn like its a fucking hobby. Hell, I don't think my mom should have had kids. Some people stop aging mentally. Which is why the discussion of age is such a tricky conversation for some people. Another thing is people have hang ups about what is and is not ok. Not everyone agrees which age is fine because of what they think is and is not right while we have a hard time s a society agreeing what is and is not acceptable. Especially when taboos to some are not the same as others. I think that if a person is old enough to be sent to war and get murdered in battle they have the right to make adult decisions. Same with them being allowed to drink and smoke. That means they have the right to make those decisions in any way they want.

Getting downvoted by a bunch of teenagers who don't realise how much you grow up in your 20's and 30's. The difference between a 10 and 20 year old is the same gap as a 20-30 year old. While it might legally be okay, I'd seriously question the power dynamic of a full grown adult guy dating a teenager

I'd say there's much more maturation from 10 to 20 than 20 to 30 so it's not exactly the same thing, but I get your point

I'm not incapable of socializing with them, but tbh I look at 19 year olds more as children then adults. Their early 20's are still the awkward phase of figuring their life out too. More then likely a 19 year old and a 30+ year old or going to have very different hobbies, tastes and experiences. I just don't think it would work out.

yeah i highly doubt it would work out. my main point is this infantilizing view most people seem to get as they age. But like, I've had plenty of engaging conversations with people from a different generation. You'd be surprised how many interests can be shared by two people despite a decent age difference. Hell, a good sign of friendship is being willing to engage and bond over stuff that isn't a mutual interest.

It’s funny how that age thing changes as you’re older. I work in medicine and without too much details I had two patients with the same last name on my schedule, but a THIRTY ONE (31) year age gap and assumed parent/child. I’m a dad and that’s the gap between myself and my daughter and the thought of being my age and thinking “ah yes I want someone born today” is just wild to me. They seemed happy but like ew.

Heres how that idea is disseminated: - middle age women recognizing that their bodies are in decline and their biological clock are threatened by younger women - as a result, they remark to their partners or any man who will listen about how age gap relationships as creepy/perverse - their partners repeat the point and act like they’d never fuck a college girl in order to score merit points with the women their own age.

The only detractors are the weird old creeps who are still loveless and unmarried at 36+, prompting them to get addicted to online redpill content.

Classic dumbass Reddit take. My point is that the entire idea of age gap relationships being perverted is a narrative created by women and perpetuated by their male friends or spouses. It has nothing to do with any concern for the younger woman and everything to do with older women’s insecurities. If you don’t believe me, wait until your one of your male friends is 40 and starts dating a 30 year old. His friends with 40 somethjng wives will have some thoughts on that, I assure you lol

I think fucking and settling down are two very different things here tbh. But in general, be it men or women, having a huge 20+ something age gap isn’t ideal if you want a relationship just by looking at divorce rates (the closer two people are in age, the less likely divorce is, even if the chances are still high, they’re lower than if you didn’t take that into account). If you just wanna have sex then it doesn’t matter as much, but a sexual partner you shag regularly IS a type of relationship.

25 is about right, though. Because according to science, that's when the prefrontal cortex finishes growing. Which leads to a more balanced and calm way of thinking. Before that, one is more inclined to let one's emotions lead. Now that isn't to say that people after 25 can't also make emotional choices. But it is less likely. Hence, I consider adulthood to start at that age.

Something growing and developing are two different things, you know. 25 is when the prefrontal cortex finishes growing. Development of the brain obviously doesn't stop then. You would know that if you had actually read said study. Because they very clearly stated that in the paper.

What I hate most about this infantilization culture is that I was genuinely surprised when I was 18 and got told I was a full grown adult, because I still saw myself as a kid. I got slapped hard in the face by real life consequences that I hadn't been prepared for. And that mentality of seeing myself as a kid put me far behind my peers that were more mature at 16 than I was at 22. Teenagers are supposed to be pushed and prepared for adulthood. Not told they're still kids all the way up through their college years.

Your brain never stops developing, the study that claimed that simply just had 25 year olds as their highest age group so they assumed that that was the age that your brain would fully finish developing when truth is your brain develops your entire life. The legal age being a hard line has some issues related to pedophilia accusations and social norms, but it exists as a hard line at 18 for a reason. Anyone over 18, regardless of how they look or their maturity level, is legally considered an adult. You could argue that they still act like children, they may still look like children, but that line acts more like a discrete reference point than anything, since legally they are no longer children. Meaning, OOP's argument is stupid, women are women at 18 full stop. The responder is questionable.
