Their design language is not the reason for their success. The fact that they build the higher quality cars of the other mainstream German brands is the reason they are selling well.
It's literal Pikachu face for this sub and r/BMW as people tie themselves in ever greater knots to explain the sales success and refuse to accept that people could actually like the designs. If you say you like them they angrily tell you you're coping and then go back to claiming nobody could like them and wonder why they're selling.
Conventional attractiveness doesn’t seem to matter a much to actual buyers in this segment as it does to keyboard warriors.
The current X3 is in the top 5 of luxury car sales, behind ugly ducklings like the RX and NX, and BMW is the top selling luxury brand in the country and world.
> Conventional attractiveness doesn’t seem to matter as much to actual buyers in this segment as it does to keyboard warriors.
Probably the only segment where it does matter more is high end sports cars?
I would also argue mainstream crossover SUVs, which are competing to look more “rugged” and traditionally truckish: RAV-4, Pilot, CX-50, Palisade. That depends on what is considered conventionally attractive, but IMO in that segment it’s boxy/beefy.
It’s true for the US at least. In Europe and China X3 sales are noticeably down since the model change. In China it’s particularly bad with almost -40% in 2025. Here in Germany the G45 gets a shit ton of hate for the cheap interior while in US forums and reviews people seem to care a lot less.
I don’t think the current gen RX and NX are considered ugly by most. In fact the NX in particular has been quite well received - esp compared to the previous gen.
I will be buying in the states. Looking forward to see the configuration selector for pre-orders. Hopefully the wait time doesn't get pushed to next year
That would be about 10% of global BMW production. Vehicles like this are the arrival of EVs in the mass market, the first time they are going head to head with the petrol equivalents.
From the article:
>To keep wait times from stretching into next winter, BMW is bringing forward a second production shift at its brand new Debrecen plant in Hungary, Auto News reports. The site is BMW’s first factory built purely for EVs, and while it’ll eventually build around 150,000 cars a year, it’s currently still ramping up. Clearly, that ramp needs to get steeper.
It's not clear if the "eventual 150K cars a year" is split amongst multiple models or not, but it's safe to assume that production currently is more than just a few, even before the ramp up.
Demand is high for this product. The price, features, and range are all class leading.
Right. So it’s better, in your mind, to think that a car maker that makes a lot of their very popular products *did not* make a lot of their new highly anticipated product because “there’s no way to know.”
Great contribution to the discussion.
It's nonsense to think they made the same amount right off the bat as 2 out of their 3 most popular crossovers that have been in production for decades.
I turoed an electric Mercedes SUV around san Fran and Napa Valley last year and didn’t mind it at all. Looked great and drove ok. Although I found the suspension a bit too floaty. Felt like I was driving a boat over gentle waves.
I have no context from other electric suvs since I’ve only driven electric sedans prior to that.
I wish they had not had done the mini kidneys. It is like they saw the amazing response the NK design language got and then massively chickened out.
That being said this is looking like a great EV and priced to sell.
This is very consistent with everything they've said about Neue Klasse. SUVs get the small, narrow kidney and cars get the wide ones. [These](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/XwqEqiy0A2k/sddefault.jpg) were the concepts.
