The yard is at capacity, so no trailers are allowed in until a trailer leaves the yard.
Currently, the first 5 in line have trailers followed by 2 bobtails.
The rest of the line is 10 with trailers and 8 bobtails.
The ones with trailers will likely sit and wait because they can't just keep the trailer. The bobtails will likely all wait until their scheduled departure time, then cancel and get a TONU.
Their systems got all screwed up by the snow, and the sites were closed or partially closed, so they'd allow drivers to drop their trailers, but no one was unloading anything or loading outbound trailers.
Yesterday, I got $1,900 for 2 actual loads (280 miles), and 4 TONUs ($225 each) for the imaginary loads.
If the site prioritized getting the bobtails in to make space, the trucks they're booking to clear the yard would be able to help fix the problem. Instead, they're just going to let it all just play out as a headache that helps no one.
Truck Ordered Not Used
It's when they booked a truck, but then canceled last minute. With Amazon, it's any time they cancel within 2 hours of the pickup (not if the driver/carrier cancels)
It was $125 recently, $175 last year, $225 this year.
Amazon has to cancel the load within 2 hours of the Schedule Departure Date (not the SAT or SDT, but a different one entirely that you only see on the BOL).
Sometimes, you have to submit a payment dispute in order to get it.
AFPs don't get TONU, only Relay
What is AFP?
Im in canada. Company driver company assigns my relay to me. I've had quote a few loads canceled within 30 minutes of scheduled departure times
As the other guy said, AFP is Amazon Freight Partner. They are the ones that are usually driving Amazon branded trucks that are usually leased to the AFP from Amazon. Amazon also exerts a ton of control over them with dispatch, dashcams, etc.
Relay is all the random trucks that you see pulling for Amazon all over. Relay also has trailer required loads, yard hostler moves, trailer provided, short term contracts, long term contracts, etc.
Canada may have different Amazon contracts entirely, I genuinely do not know. If you're in an Amazon branded truck, though, I doubt your boss is getting a TONU.
Im in a 3rd party using relay but my company manages mine i only see some relay options / basic things. I cant pick my loads or see anything important other than route and times and arriving etc. I wouldnt doubt they get tonu
AFP = Amazon Freight Partner
These are the 3rd party carriers you see driving Amazon branded trucks but it's their company info/DOT on the side, not Amazon Logistics. They are hourly pay, that's why they don't get TONU.
I work in Alberta in the oilfield under provincial HoS rules. 13hr drive time in a 15hr day, 105hr/week. The regulation/legislation that puts a stop to the fun isn't an HoS one, it's a provincial labor standard that says you can work 24 consecutive days and are required to take 4 consecutive days off. Unless you apply for a waiver lol
It's a bagdrive for sure lol
But I've made $48k in 122 days of a 132 day season, as an hourly employee while hauling logs, and that was 9yrs ago.
I'm delivering to drilling rigs now, at a slightly mellower pace, and still making good money on a 21/7 rotation.
I stopped doing amazon because for the longest time theyd fucking cancel but not tell you til you were already at the gate. In the dock. Only to find out they canceled it hours beforehand. But the thought never occurred to them to call the dispatch or broker or the driver to tell them not to bother showing up.
Got sick of it. What a utter waste of time and fuel. Lol.
I had a joke with one dispatcher years ago. That id bet him 100$ theyd cancel the load but wouldnt call anyone until after i got there.
He agreed.
Lo and behokd. Canceled.
Out of the 30 loads i have tried doing with amazon. Only 2 ever left their warehouse ....
I couldn't see any 3rd party trucks in the yard at all, and no one was moving. 6 of the 10 bobtails turned around and left the line.
Someone came out and had 2 of the remaing bobtails go in the exit lane. Suddenly, the line started crawling forward when they pulled out.
Then 2 trucks went in, dropped their trailer, pulled out, and...no movement again.
Behind me are 16 bobtails.
Honest question, why would anyone call you?
There are plenty of trucking companies that would happily do PO drop and hook 100 mile loads for half of that rate.
Hell, I could call a wrecker and it would be less than $1,000 (short of this unusual situation at the gate).
>Hell, I could call a wrecker and it would be less than $1,000 (short of this unusual situation at the gate).
When was the last time you called a wrecker? You can't get a loaded tractor trailer towed across the street for less than a grand.
>Honest question, why would anyone call you?
Because they don't want to absorb the cost of having to pay a crane crew on site while wondering where the truck is. Cranes cost far more than a reliable carrier. They also don't want to absorb the cost of their product getting damaged by an unreliable carrier and shutting the project down while it gets returned and fixed. I did two loads last week that came here on an airplane from Germany. The load values were just over 20 million dollars. If my driver didn't secure it perfectly it would be damaged and have to be flown all the way back to Germany for repairs. That would shut the plant down for a couple weeks, if not a month. They pay me cause they trust me not to cost them a hell of a lot more money.
> When was the last time you called a wrecker?
Over the summer, a driver went a little off a driveway (residential water deliveries) and needed to get pulled back to asphalt.
> You can't get a loaded tractor trailer towed across the street for less than a grand.
What about drag an empty, but monstrously heavy tanker to the asphalt? 2 hours @ $150/hr for a heavy wrecker.
> Because they don't want to absorb the cost of having to pay a crane crew on site while wondering where the truck is.
So how does that have anything to do with a po drop and hook job that doesn't really have any set time and takes under 2 hours (normally)?
It sounds like they're buying you for a dayrate rather than a quick little job.
> The load values were just over 20 million dollars.
Do you not think that getting those loads involves a lot more than just picking up a contract customer? The insurance is much higher, the equipment needs to be better, the drivers need to be top notch, and the shipper needs to really trust you.
Most people in this industry fell into it as a career of last resort. A few felonies, some time in jail, kicked out of college, and an energy drink addiction...voila, truck driver.
I do have a contract customer, but I have a new employee running it, so I'm grabbing spot freight to fill in the gap.
I think that I had a really good day yesterday, but let me know what you think of it/how you would charge.
Bobtail 12 miles, sit for 45 minutes, $225 TONU.
Book another load from the same site, drive 136 miles, drop and hook, drive 46 miles, drop, $1,100.
Book a load from the same site, wait 1 hour, $225 TONU.
Book another load from the same site, its ready, hook and go to the same place I started the day, but with no additional stops, 108 miles $813.
Book a load from the same site, wait 45 minutes, $225 TONU.
Book another load from the same site, wait an additional 45 minutes, $225 TONU.
Bobtail 12 miles home.
All in, $2,800, 214 miles, and about 12 hours.
I plow this amazon.
The yard manager said she wont let anyone in till the snow was removed but that was obviously not true because yall would have been there till this morning around 4am. I think the power got to her head, looked like a supervisor was having a word with her before traffic started flowing
Snow piles and the snow ice removal process are also hindering access to the yard. Unfortunately, the piles from this weather event are not melting at all with lots of concrete hard ice in the mix.
