Yea. The BFL. That’s probably my favorite area of north Georgia because of the overlooks and the wild life. Go spend the weekend at Lake Conasauga. Most beautiful place in n ga
I did the entire Traverse 2 years ago including the loop. Haven't been back mainly because of the bridge still bring out. But agree, the scenery is quite different there. I actually wanted to camp there but I was super late, no reception and it said by reservation only. Ended up a couple of miles up the road on that huge patch of open field and camped there.
Yea... unfortunately, the bridge is still out with no way around. I am hoping they fix that this year. this time of year, much of the cohutta forest roads are closed so it doesn't make for a great trip in winter. they reopen the roads in early march so it's a great run for early spring.
Lake Conasauga is a very special place to camp with alot of great views, hiking and a fire tower you can hike to... they do require reservations, probably the only place I would actually reserve (most of the time I am more partial to disperse camping).
I have camped in that field numerous times. it's called The Ball Field and is a perfect dispersed place to camp, especially if you have many with you. in. fact, in my recent Georgia Traverse series I filmed launching this week, we actually camped on Day 3 in the Ball Field. it was perfect.
The bridge that is out is on the big frog loop which is the 92 mile stretch around the Cohutta wilderness on the west side of the Georgia traverse. The bridge is in the northern part of the big frog loop on the Georgia Tennessee border.
So if you’re running the Georgia traverse, you will just need to run the southern part of the big frog loop / the southern part of the Cohutta wilderness onto Alabama and miss the northern part of big frog loop
Make the big fog loop a separate, future trip because it is a really beautiful part of the traverse
Just jumping in here.
I’m leaving Texas for the GA Traverse in 14 days, (first week of June)
I’m planning on a full 10day trip.
Any areas I need to stay away from. Can you pin this bridge on OnX??
Dispersed camping all the way.
I figured it's still down but didn't look into any road closures. Lucked out since I wanted to go there last time but turned around because of the rain forecast.
When I drove around that campground, it looked beautiful. Perfect setting for a campground for sure.
I might go for a night or two one day as I prefer disperse camping as well.
Ah, Ball Field, makes sense...lol. I was glad I found it that night because it was already getting dark and really found it by accident.

There is the link to our first Georgia Traverse Video... Wow... I didn't realize this was over 3 years ago. Alot of great adventures since then. You can go back and watch this one, it's still a great adventure, and maybe subscribe to the channel because our recent Georgia Traverse trip launches this Thursday. Also, if you look through the channel, you will see many many many videos on deep dives into sections of the Georgia Traverse like Coopers Creek and Big Frog Loop (I think there are 3 separate adventures on the BFL).
you would be just fine. I have seen trucks, vans of all size on the georgia traverse. it is not a technical route but rather a very easy route of connecting forest roads. the intentions of the georgia traverse is not to test rigs or throw complicated obstacles on the trail, it is just a very scenic route across North Georgia, letting you take in the best parts North Georgia has to offer. you can totally do it.
on my YouTube channel, I filmed the Georgia Traverse about 2 years ago (currently on my YouTube channel) and this past Nov, we filmed it again. that video is launching this thursday. You can watch either one of those and get a good idea on what to expect from the georgia traverse.
yes. I only disperse camp in N GA... I don't go to many "camp grounds" unless it is pouring rain and I need pebble rock as a ground. Lots of great dispersed camping of all sizes. these photos are from our adventure video I filmed for YouTube (launches on Youtube this Thursday). you can see the dispersed camp sites we found on this trip. if you like them, I can send you the GPS and there are several dispersed camp sites in the vicinity.

one of my favorite adventure routes in the South
Mitsch25@reddit
Absolutely..start is just an hour and 40 minutes from my house. Trying to hit in every other week.
Apprehensive-Rub8342@reddit (OP)
what's your favorite part of the route? The Cohutta would have to be my #1 and where I go back and visit most.... then Coopers Creek
Mitsch25@reddit
Went to Coopers just a few weeks ago. Love it there. Haven't been to Cohutta in a while though. That's big frog, correct?

We are planning to run the traverse for the first time in April. Which bridge are you referring to being out?

Thank you 🙏🏼 the new adventure comes out this Thursday. Hopefully it’s as fun as the first one

Where on the trail is the obstacles the jeeps in the photos are going through.
Apprehensive-Rub8342@reddit (OP)
That is just past Charlie’s creek. It’s the worst obstacle you’ll hit on the Georgia traverse
MountainMan191109@reddit
Thanks, hope we get through ok!

That spot definitely looks familiar. Little extra sketchy when you have a trailer with you.

We ended up on top of Mount Chestnut that evening. One of the best over landing drives we've had.

Would a half or 3/4 ton truck make it through this or is it too big do you suppose?

Nice adventure! Always like a creek.
CrayonMayon@reddit
Holy shit that last one. That's gotta be close to tipping right? All that extra gear on top? Not a jeep guy.
Apprehensive-Rub8342@reddit (OP)
It felt pretty sketchy for the top heavy jeeps for sure

Never been, but looks fun
