Ok so let’s talk opt idles…
Just got new Cascadia 😡 (had same opt idle issues on prior Cascadias). I can’t get the damn thing to cool under 71° without covering the temp sensor with my hand. Company says I’m either full of shit or doing something wrong. Which is it? Also, who is able to sleep comfortably at 73°+?

Did it work?

However as I sit here it’s currently 74° in the truck and 85° outside…

Well…. I got it cool to 66° by zip tying a piece of cotton fabric over the temp sensor, hoping it would take longer for it to realize how cool it. That worked, and it was 71.5 when I woke up this morning while being 58° outside. I did also implement your suggested settings.

I found my 2024 Cascadia is very good at cooling as long as it ain't in this year's record breaking Texas heat wave. I had that shit maxed out and was still cooking if it wasn't running. If it ain't cooling you off to the temps listed, there might be an issue. My first few trucks were FUBAR and needed everything from new batteries and cables to new opti idle systems. First truck had legit no opti idle cooling and heating. Don't know how the fuck the driver survived winter. These were new trucks too, a 50k mile 2022 and a 450k mile 2019. They gunk up fast apparently. I'm a caffeine freak so I got a debuff in hot weather and need some hardcore A/C pretty much all the time, plus I live in my truck and take my off days also in my truck, meaning I gotta avoid pissing off my company by idling too much (company driver) so I had to refine my means of staying cool with minimal opti idle time. Some tips I've learned during extreme heat especially for keeping idle time low: \-This one's most important imho: Buy a custom reflective sun visor for the truck you have. I got a Chinesium one from Amazon for 40 bucks and it's fucking insane how much heat it actually keeps out, it can cover all of the windows perfectly and combined with the curtains it's by far the best thing to retain cool air. I'm surprised the Cascadia doesn't just have reflective shit on the back of the privacy curtains if their whole thing is "fuel savings", it makes a radical difference where I thought it'd be modest at best. As a flatbedder I always turn on opti idle when I gotta load/unload, and I toss that visor in the front window or a sunny side window real fast and tuck my sleeper curtains behind the seat so the cab cooler can cool the whole truck. The visor gets very hot but the cab stays very pleasant. \-Keep your fans on very high and max A/C while driving (in the sleeper), when you park it'll last a bit longer. \-My dispatch said there's a way to open the hood and get the opti idle to still work, I got it working once but the theory is that the engine heat dissipates away from the cab instead of soak into it at least during the first hour after parking \-Tell maintenance or whoever you'd go to that your opti idle ain't working right, I kept telling mine and they said "oh yeah they just don't work good is all, buy a heater." Well after waking up with numb hands and feet a few times cause it's -20 outside and all my winter layers weren't enough, I said fuck you and did the paperwork that legally obligates them to look at it. I hate to do that shit but as a company driver you're the one making the money for the mechanics, it's their job to support you. We got a high as fuck attrition rate in OTR so being comfortable is like the bare minimum they can do to keep us willing to work here. Anyways, they found the diesel heater lines were clogged with soot and the temp sensor was broken, so the mechanic bossman ain't always right.

Thanks for the tip. This is my 2nd LITTERALLY brand spanking new Cascadia doing the same dumb shit. Then again it’s only day 3, hopefully I’m overreacting and just need to fine tune it.

I'm pretty sure they made it hard to engage opti-idle, so the driver gets frustrated that they stop caring about trying to engage it, and the trucking companies saves all that money in fuel. Because they could just make opti-idle into a button that starts and stops it, but they don't...

Remember to clean your cabin filters regularly too. Mine got clogged up after just a few months

I’d love to have AC that could keep it at 71. I’ve got an APU that can only manage maybe 10-15 degrees cooler than outside, even with every curtain closed. Newish truck too. I was parked in Primm NV a month or two ago, and I woke up after 4 hours to it being 97 in the sleeper. I sat up for the next 3 hours tapping the gas pedal every 5 minutes until the sun went down and it finally dropped to 90 inside. Turns out dark colored trucks with no idling allowed and mostly southwest runs is a bad idea. I’m actually most comfortable at 85, but I can’t actually sleep with it that hot because I end up extremely dehydrated by the time I wake up. On a totally unrelated note, I’m quitting and moving north in a few weeks.

Run it at 1000 rpm set ac at whatever and sleep.

I don’t idle my truck at all between about 20-75. Y’all are just babies. Humans are a lot tougher than you think
View on Reddit #7832394

PalpitationLong4353@reddit

Anything over 70 outside and in the cab you wake up in a sweat. Not only does that suck, youre not going to sleep properly if not comfortable. Don't sleep properly = unsafe driving. Unsafe driving= accidnents It's literally a safety issue and and had nothing to do with drivers being "babies"
View on Reddit #7834498

Feeling_Display8750@reddit

Justify it all you want 90+% of drivers are totally irresponsible with idling. Turn the truck on when they get in and don’t turn it off until they are home. Anything under 75, windows cracked (there are screens you can put in the window for exactly this purpose) with a fan on and you’ll be comfortable. And as it gets colder, just add more blankets. 2 regular comforter blankets and sweatshirt/sweatpants gets me comfortable down to around 20. I’m sure I could get proper sleeping bags to get me even colder, but it’s kinda rare to go below 20 for long times. I stand firm, y’all are a bunch of lazy, inconsiderate babies. Sleep IS a safety issue, with 100 better solutions than idling

Another trick is to keep draining the power so it will start more often I log into a game on my Xbox and turn my tv brightness all the way down also have a box fan on high. That keeps the truck idling most of my 10 hour reset

Woke up to 71.5° while it’s 57° outside. Can’t image how well this is gonna work on 90° Phoenix nights. 😡

Back in my over the road days, we use to just pull the fuses for the dash and the company couldn’t tell that we were idling all night long! Not sure if these newer trucks are able to run with those fuses pulled though…

Trucks aren’t trucks anymore. They’re just diesel powered computers. If I fart, they know.

Where's the temp sensor in the cab?
View on Reddit #7834376

Tank52086@reddit (OP)

It’s the small little nub near the AC controls above the 12v outlet.

I don't even turn on interior comfort anymore. 23 cascadia with an epu. I just set my bunk one click into the blue from the middle, crank the fan, close both my curtains, and it doesn't start my truck for about 11 hours.

I don't have to worry about any of that. I use a bipap. It's a machine I have to use to sleep. So I get to idle as much as I want. So in return I fuel at the yard as much as possible.

I talked to a guy at my terminal and they have ways to adjust it for people who have sleep issues. I thought he was full of shit but I am in a different truck right now since mine is at the body shop (yellow pole came out of no where). My truck will idle way into the night and freeze the inside of the truck. This loaner truck the A/C seems to work better, but it shuts off way sooner resulting in the cab being noticeably hotter. I always keep the bunk settings on as cold as possible and use the fan speed to manipulate my temperature. I prefer the truck to keep running instead of constantly turning off and on doing the annoying 10 second beeeeeppppppppp every time it starts. As someone said below things usually go smoother if I throw it into opti-idle as soon as I am done driving. I've been paying attention and it goes into "continuous interior comfort mode" and if I switch screens, the truck is showing the outside temperature much hotter than it actually is. If I had to guess some of the heat from driving is venting right near the hood latches and heat soaking the mirror / temp sensor area causing the truck to think it's hotter than it is thus allowing it to be in continuous interior comfort mode. I could just be crazy but I have noticed on similar days if I shut it off, go take a shower, then come back and turn on opti-idle, the truck reads the outside temp closer to what it actually is.

I have an apu but been considering rigging up a little 5w heater of some kind on the temp sensor to keep my ac colder.

Close all curtains. Set it to 2 clicks above coldest setting and fan 2 clicks from highest setting. My Cascadia froze ms out

I really hope that this version works better for you. I hated earlier opti idol versions but this one has been flawless. It is supposed to be triggered by the in cab temp and not the outside temp.

I hope it works too. I really enjoyed my KW and I don’t intend to bitch for 2 years again before they do something about it. I’ll just quit and go local. Thanks for your wisdom, glad it’s free 👍🏻

Make sure the setting on your display setting has COMFORT MODE on otherwise it will only start the truck when the batteries get low.
View on Reddit #7829527

Tank52086@reddit (OP)

Right. So that was my winter issue with the FL I had previously. All my outlets and inverter would cut off, dash would say “power shedding”, batteries would drain and truck would never start. Even though I had opt idle set on without comfort mode. (Running bunk heater)
View on Reddit #7829795

WISDOM4FREE1960@reddit

I have a newer Cascadia and the opti idle works great in it. Much better than previous versions of it. Just turn it on via the dash controls and set you comfort settings in the back.

Tank52086@reddit (OP)

How do you have front and rear fan speeds and temps set?
View on Reddit #7828731

ohjaimiea@reddit

For me I have to set the front knobs equal level to the left make it straight across horizontal and make sure you have on recirculate and it clicked on the blue artic blast. Then the back bunk works as featured. Also I have to click to opti idle from the steering wheel short cut the little two windows button on the right click that twice find the opti click yes click on and it’ll almost immediately shut off but then like re calibrates for the back bunk. Also another trick is when you park for the night immediately turn on the opti idle if you wait 30 or mins I’ve notice then it’s shit fucked Doing these steps mine works perfect

The company is on a campaign about this over fuel savings (Cascadia). So I turn it on and it's on for interior comfort. But it stays idling as long as the AC is on. If I shut the bunk fan off because I'm freezing, then the truck shuts off. Turn the bunk fan back on, the truck starts and idles until morning. I think I woke up one time and it said "battery saving mode" or similar. I jump through all these hoops in the spirit of cooperation, then just idle the truck so I'm comfortable.

Battery saving mode is an issue I had during the winter. All the outlets and inverter power down halfway through the night.
