Yeah, this is the home coffee equivalent of thinking Red Lobster was Michelin star-level haute cuisine. Got these opinions from my mother, god bless her. Her tastes were small town and quaint but I thought she was quite the connoisseur.
My teenage kiddo and her friends went to the mall for a movie and wanted to get dinner beforehand but the only place without a wait was Red Lobster. I guess it was not a very good experience.
I haven't been in nearly a decade, but I do miss those Cheddar Bay Biscuits. May have to give it a try sometime to see if it really has gone down hill.
There definitely weren't as many small mom and pop restaurants. Maybe a diner, a pizza/Italian place, and a Chinese place. I grew up on Long Island with a bunch of seafood restaurants, so I don't understand why there were so many full Red Lobsters around.
That's probably a legit reason. When I think back on my childhood, there were only a handful of big restaurants in our city of ~80k. The Darden owned chains were quite literally the nicest places we had to go out and eat.
It was probably also harder to learn about new places before Yelp, Opentable, etc. You either read about it in the local paper or heard it about from a friend or family member.
We all ate at home all the time. There weren't influencers eating out 24/7. There was no social media. Times were simpler and amazing. I wish I was raising my kids back then.
The more I think about it, I think these chain restaurants were a big deal to our parents and grandparents simply because there just weren't that many nice places around before them. I think to them, these chain places were pretty much the nicest places they had to eat at.
I stumbled across a Boku commercial with Richard Lewis a few months ago and I totally forgot about those things. I remember staring at them at the store and telling myself. “Man I wish I was an adult so I could drink these!” Ya know because they weren’t juice boxes they were boxed juice cocktails for adults! 🤣
Polaner's seedless blackberry is so damn good. My mouth is watering just thinking about toast with some butter and their blackberry or raspberry spread.
I loved this when I was a kid. As an adult, I bought a can and never drank it because I guess my mom never said I could, so I just looked at it longingly while it went stale.
It's one of those the memory is always going to be better than the present day. It tasted like really milky darker roast coffee.
I do want to track down the Orange cafe flavor and give that a go, I thought it was the height of sophistication when my Great Aunt would let me have some.
hoooly shit. my grandma used to drink Café Francais RELIGIOUSLY. i haven’t seen one of these canisters in probably over twenty years. can still taste it though… thanks for the memory.
My grandma drank them and my grandpa used the metal containers to store screws and nails. I remember helping my granddad with some repair thing in the yard and having to search through canisters of these lol.
Were these the ones that had that ongoing storyline in the commercials - the guy borrowing his neighbor’s General Foods International Coffee unexpectedly (of course they are both single and she’s a babe) and each commercial is them flirting and you’re like “when are they gonna get together??”
Mmmm! Goddamn, Jimmie! This is some serious gourmet shit! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some freeze-dried Taster's Choice right, but he springs this serious GOURMET shit on us! What flavor is this?
Well, depends on what you consider real chocolate. White chocolate has no cocoa solids in it, only cocoa butter. I don’t care much for it, except every now and then. But it can’t be accused of not being real any more than any other white chocolate.
This coffee brand and it's commercials are why I tried to order an Irish coffee in a diner at age 16. Waitress looked at me like -.- And I was like yeah like the mix in the tin
Oh man, this stuff was awful.
I was always a coffee drinker, even as a kid. My Grandma would make coffee on the stove, and I'd get a cup every morning when I stayed at her house.
As a teenager, my mom bought some of these for me, and when my grandma saw them, she threw them away, and we made real coffee. Lol
I always wanted to try this but my mom didn’t like coffee. Then then her boyfriend (now my dad) only likes coffee with 2 equals. No flavored coffee ever. They don’t even keep milk or cream in the house
Wow, I had completely forgotten those existed! I dont recall them being particularly good though. Like we were just lying about it to each other to justify the cost.
I remember drinking this when I was a kid and then going to school and telling my friends that I had the caffeine shakes. Didn't realize my mom bought the decaf version until much later 😳
The fancy coffee as a lot of people, including myself, like to call it. I never had any of this coffee, but remember seeing the commercials for them a lot during the afternoon programs (i.e. soap operas and talk shows) and TV movies in prime time.
I’m from south Louisiana and my dad and mawmaw legitimately put coffee in my milk bottle when I was around two. This just fueled my addiction with its sweetness. By the time I hit college I was black coffee or no coffee. Now I enjoy a correctly made flat white or breve latte. Can’t stand the sugary stuff anymore.

Seeing this picture makes me wonder if this stuff isn't the reason that I became a coffee drinker. My mom used to let me drink this stuff when I was like 10 years old.
Growing up I loved the smell of hazelnut coffee. My parents never had it but I'd smell it in those coffee bean dispensers they used to have. Then I discovered these and I'd just have them and feel like a grown up.
These were my gateway drug into coffee. I started with a few grains in a glass of milk and eventually turned into a grownup and it became mostly coffee with some milk. Delicious.
So, a couple of years ago, I wanted this badly and found that Maxwell House took them over
You can still get a couple flavours, but the packaging says Maxwell House and coloring is changed to match. Enjoy!
I remember saving my allowance to buy the multipack sampler of this. My mom hijacked Cafe Vienna and wound up drinking it for years. I credit this with my love for flavored coffee.
I remember this being in the cupboard and probably having some once or twice. I think I was more obsessed with regular coffee though since I thought it made me "cool" that I was allowed to drink it (on special occasions).

softflatcrabpants@reddit
Did you always hold the mug with two hands, like in the commercials?
trustme1maDR@reddit
And the mug must be clear

Yep, and cafe au lait

I had a visceral reaction to this photo. Mostly because my mom would drink these. They smelled so good and then I’d sneak a sip. So gross 🤢
Addamall@reddit
I always wanted to try it as a kid, as an adult I am sure kid me is the only time I’d actually sorta like it.
RandyArgonianButler@reddit
This shit was so good. I remember my grandma would make it for me whenever we went camping. Turned me into a coffee drinker for life.
Mr_Cigarette@reddit
I definitely drank this as kid; like it was hot chocolate.
Reading these comments is making me realize that my upbringing was much more normal than I thought.
spiniton85@reddit
These were my gateway drug into coffee. I started with a few grains in a glass of milk and eventually turned into a grownup and it became mostly coffee with some milk. Delicious.
Cold-Bowl-8715@reddit
So good I miss these
Adrasteia-One@reddit
As a kid, I thought drinking this was a sign of the utmost fancy. I remember that "Jean Luc" commercial, hehe.
Electric_Sheep2001@reddit
My grandmother drank Cafe Francais daily. A few years ago I was feeling nostalgic and bought some. It wasn't that bad.

So, a couple of years ago, I wanted this badly and found that Maxwell House took them over You can still get a couple flavours, but the packaging says Maxwell House and coloring is changed to match. Enjoy!

Local grocery store seafood salad was the epitomy of luxury for me. Before I learn what surimi isn't real crab.

I remember saving my allowance to buy the multipack sampler of this. My mom hijacked Cafe Vienna and wound up drinking it for years. I credit this with my love for flavored coffee.
Gluten-Free-Jesus@reddit
I miss these so much!

I love this stuff. It was so good.

I loved putting a spoonful of the French vanilla one in my hot cocoa. I felt like such a fancy grown up drinking “coffee.”

I forgot about those. Elementary school me was all about them. I can taste it now. Good on ice cream too.

Exactly when did you start drinking coffee?
XIENVYIX@reddit (OP)
Yes.
AugenDesDrachen@reddit
I remember this being in the cupboard and probably having some once or twice. I think I was more obsessed with regular coffee though since I thought it made me "cool" that I was allowed to drink it (on special occasions).
Searchlights@reddit
This was my gateway beverage to actual coffee
