How do YOU shave?

Happy for anyone to answer with their own personal experiences, but my predicament is below.
As a 20 something male I feel like I’ve never found a method to shave my face comfortably and cheaply. Disposable razors go dull quickly and drag, individual blade safety razors cut easily. Electric doesn’t seem to do much. When I grow a beard it is patchy, so shaving is necessary.
SaltRevolutionary326@reddit
I usually start with the Beast Trimmer from Skull Shaver to trim everything down first, then finish up as needed it makes shaving faster, cleaner, and much easier to manage.
DangerousAd8213@reddit
I keep shaving my head with the Pitbull Shaver from Skull Shaver because it’s quick, comfortable, and gives me a consistently smooth shave without the hassle of traditional razors.
Victorius_Meldrus@reddit
Spread some Veet on before going to bed. Scrape off the hair in the morning using an old bank card. Leaves my skin so soft, too.
Murky-Wind2222@reddit
Gillette turbo - five blade vibrator. And I shave standing in the shower. Anyone who leaves stubble is not shaving.
abstract_groove@reddit
I was using a Mach 3 for years but then got a Harry's. They really are ace. The handle is a lot more ergonomic than the Gilette too.
I agree electric razors are shite, and stupidly expensive for what they are. I've had a couple, I've no idea where either of them are now, probably at the back of a cupboard somewhere or the mrs has thrown them in the bin, which says everything.
Mr-Tourette@reddit
Buy a decent quality electric shaver..not chinese tat on Amazon , I haven't shaved for a llong time but when I did, a good quality Philipps shaver always worked perfectly and I have thick facial hair.
DeifniteProfessional@reddit
Electric clippers, not electric razer. Easy to get an even shave because you use the size adaptor you need and that's that
Just reminded me I need a shave actually
blumpkinator2000@reddit
Braun Series 5 shaver now. I find, for me, this gives the best balance of closeness, comfort and convenience. I find rotary (Philips type) shavers a bit rough and burny on my skin.
Back when I used to wet shave, I preferred cartridge razors. Did try a DE razor, and stuck with it for a year, but hated every single minute of it. I'm not interested in turning shaving into a hobby, and don't want to play around with trying different handles, blades, soaps and creams trying to find "the one". Fair play to those who do, but it's really not for everyone.
MediocreEquipment457@reddit
I shave with clippers . It leaves about a days worth of stubble which is a look I like .
My skin is sensitive and rashes when I use razors so it’s a necessity for me but very easy
Breaking-Dad-@reddit
Same. Absolutely the best experience for me. I used to set shave, foams then oils. It’s a cleaner look but comes with irritation. Then I used an electric shaver but it was never brilliant. I got some quite cheap hair clippers and with no guard I can look neat but not take the hairs off completely.
GroupApprehensive978@reddit
I have been shaving with hair clippers for over 20 years. Best method ever.
banedlol@reddit
Op: my beard is patchy so I have to shave.
Top comment: just trim it and leave some stubble!

My Answer - I trim it .

How do you shave / I trim
What do you not get about that ? It’s answering quite literally the only question in the post
Defiant-Eagle-3288@reddit
A patchy beard doesn't necessarily mean stubble doesn't work. If left to grow my beard would be patchy, but I do more or less what this comment said (just slightly longer, and neatened up with a detail trimmer). But I have slowly growing and fair facial hair, so that may or may not work for OP. But regardless, the title is "How do YOU shave?" and this comment responded in kind.
MentalPlectrum@reddit
Seconding this. Exactly how I do it too, I use clippers without a guard, it doesn't look clean shaven, but it looks good and when it grows out for up to a week it looks better than trying to cut to that length from the start, not really sure why,
If I use a razor I look like a spotty teenager (I'm nearly 40).
F1nut92@reddit
This is what I do when I go almost clean shaven, whenever I used to shave with a razor my neck would just flare up, get loads of spots etc so just couldn't be bothered and find this is a good in between, just put the clippers down to the one from lowest setting and get to work.
Actual-Eye-267@reddit
This is the way
Shaving with a razor is uncomfortable because of the way it leaves your skin feeling tight
CrossCityLine@reddit
Yep same. Head chippers with a number 2 guard on it, and the guard removed for the edges.
Hainault@reddit
Yup this

If you just want a full shave that is close to what you'd get with a standard razor, use a foil shaver

Mental_Water_2694@reddit
Clippers is like one of the only other things you can call Electric Hair Trimmers.
aje0200@reddit (OP)
Ahh. Thank you. Clippers to me makes me think of a pair of pivoting blades
MunrowPS@reddit
Hair clippers i assume, its what i do
You can get smaller detail ones that finish about 0.5mm
I use clippers for most, gilette one blade for my tache and around my mouth
And then finish with a standard gillette razor e.g. mach 5 ir whatever on my cheeks
I shave with no water
berlin_ag@reddit
Straight razor. Much smoother and safer than you imagine and one will last you a lifetime so it’s absurdly cheap in the long run.
Other-Tip2408@reddit
Hair clippers with no guard and finish it off with a disposable razor
Think_Preference_611@reddit
Clippers unless you want the clean shaved look, in which case get a decent safety razor and good blades. It's called a "safety" razor for a reason, if you're cutting yourself that easily you're doing something wrong.
And unless you're anal about having a face as smooth as a baby's ass don't shave against the grain. You're risking cuts, rashes, ingrown hairs all for getting that last 0.1mm of hair.
BunnyTorus@reddit
Have you got a chum who would help?
When solo, I use clippers to stubble length for face and a single blade disposable to tidy up under chin and neck.
With a friend to assist, there’s a lot of lather and fun.
Illustrious-Dog6678@reddit
Get a mach3 mate everybody knows they're the best. Personally I'm mach 3 in the shower no mirror
username87264@reddit
95% of the time I use a rechargeable clipper for a 'stubble' shave, if I need to close shave I use a safety razor.
Many years ago I read a guide on personal grooming in GQ magazine (maybe 1999 or something) and it has stood me in good stead because my dad never taught me.
Get your face warm/wet. Directly after a shower is ideal.
Use a brush with something to lather your face that doesn't irritate your skin. A brush helps lift the hairs. This will be different for a lot of people. I'm lucky in that my face can put up with any old shit but I know some people have to be more specific with products. If you have no brush then just putting shave cream on with your hand is fine.
Use a new or at least clean and fairly new blade and shave! Go slow, use the mirror and be mindful of the angle you're holding the blade at in relation to your skin. Too steep and it will drag/cut, too shallow and it won't cut at all. This sounds tricky but gets intuitive pretty quickly. I contort my face into various stupid expressions to stretch the skin as much as I can, for example lift your chin right up to do your neck etc. You should try and shave in the direction of growth to minimise causing ingrowing hairs.
This bit is important! Splash your face off with your hands, with COLD water, then pat dry with a fresh towel. This closes your pores back up and reduces irritation.
Use a moisturiser. Shaving is a bit of an ordeal for your face and your partner (assuming you have or want one) will appreciate it.
mentaldrummer66@reddit
Double edge safety razor. Took a few goes to get the technique right (and no longer nick myself) but it is a much better shave and I no longer get razor burn. It’s worth persevering with it to get the technique down.
MustrumRidicully@reddit
100% this. I switched to a super-cheap plastic Wilkinson DE razor in my early 40s (over a decade ago) and have never looked back. No more razor burn and I spend about £10 a year on blades. The trick is to wash your face with soap and hot water before shaving, it'll soften the stubble. Then, take your time, rinse the blade often, hold the razor loosely with your thumb and just one or two fingers and let it follow the contours of your face only applying light pressure and let the blade do the work.
username87264@reddit
I bought a pack of 500 blades on amazon about 12 something years ago, still going through them. It was about £5 - £6. Safety razor is where the savings are, and also the cleanest shave!
asoriginalasyou@reddit
Got a merkur slant DE razor 10 years ago and it’s amazing. Very close shave, idiot proof. Bought a bag of feather blades at the same time and they last ages.
Soooo much better than multi blade razors.
Trimmer for lazy days
Frothingdogscock@reddit
Mekur Futur user here, bought it 20 years ago, and once I got used to it I can't use anything else. I also use an old fashioned soap dish and a brush to larger up.
Electric razors are no use to me, I need a straight edge for my lamb chops 👍
The_AJR@reddit
1000% this. My dad bought me one as a Christmas present 10 years ago and I’m still using it to this day. Much better shave than the multi blade razors from the likes of Gillette etc and you can get razor blades for pennies so it’s so much cheaper. I have a beard but I use the safety razor to shape up and never looked back.
St2Crank@reddit
OP take note this is the way, you just need to learn with a safety razor. You’ll get the hang of it quickly enough.
I’m like you and I need to shave everyday. Once you’re used to it you’ll have a perfect shave and you’ll be spending about £10 a year on blades.
Get a decent razor, an Edwin Jagger is about £30 but will last literally years.
Important is people all have their favourite blades, get a few sample packs and try them out, see what works for you. I personally use Derby blades, but again it’s an individual thing.

https://traditionalshaving.co.uk/products/razor-blade-sample-pack
aje0200@reddit (OP)
I’ll have to have a look for it. I do have one but haven’t used it in about 3 years. One of them where you twist the bottom of the handle and it opens up like a swing bridge
thetobesgeorge@reddit
Seconding the suggestion of trying a few different blades, I personally use Wilkinson Sword with my Mühle razor, also worth noting that some are “open comb” vs “closed comb”, I’d start with closed and then if you feel it’s not a close enough shave move to the open
thetobesgeorge@reddit
What I love about using a DE razor is that with a sharp enough blade I can do it in the shower once my skin has had a few mins to soften, i don’t even have to lather up
Representative-Bass7@reddit
I tried a safety razor , two different razors and loads of different blades but couldn't get the hang of it, went back to my Gillette fusion 5, but still carried on using a brush and soap which I find loads better than the gel or oils, I also use a razorpit to clean the blades after, it makes them last a lot longer than they are supposed to I have found, I have had one of them for about 20 years maybe, and it still works really well.
Doragan@reddit
I always thought I was bad at shaving. Nothing seemed to work for me (although I didn't try a safety razor or cutthroat myself). I would always get bad shaving rash, and ended up only shaving with the grain and living with the stubble.
Then I went to a wedding in the US and the guys all went to the barbers for a shave the morning of the wedding. I didn't notice anything wrong, but my dad tells a great story about watching the barber struggle to shave me. Turns out I have a particularly annoying face (and not just the kind that gets punched). Barber said it was the hardest shave he's ever done. Apparently I'd been learning to shave on hard mode.
For context, I have relatively thick hair, and have been able to grow a beard since before most of my peers had a decent tash. I now just leave the beard to grow, partly because it's easier. I use a beard trimmer about once a week for upkeep.
Fwiw before I let my beard grow out I used Boldking razors. They have a bigger gap between the blades and I found it much better than anything off the shelf. Blades seem to last longer too.
Spottyjamie@reddit
When i have time- double edge razor with king of shaves preshave oil, bluebeards shaving cream, proraso white post shave balm
If short on time- gillete powerball cartridge with estrid shave gel then proraso white post shave balm
If already late- panasonic electric with rituals electric shave oil then kiels razor bump cream
LemmysCodPiece@reddit
Yes, I use a traditional safety razor and a brush. My razor is a 1953 Gillette Aristocrat. The blades are super sharp and last ages. I can get 100 blades for about £9.
It is way better than any modern crap.
dwair@reddit
When I was clean shaven I used an open razor. Loved all the ritual and stuff.
MeltingChocolateAhh@reddit
I have pretty sensitive skin but shave really regularly, and when I don't, it takes about a day and a half or two days to get stubble.
The cheap bics, they shred my face to bits.
The double edge safety blades, they cut my face to bits. For this, I'm thinking about that King Gillette thing. Hated it. There is a technique to it, and it's probably the closest shave I can get but I was hurting myself too much for it to work.
Electric shaver, doesn't shave as close as I'd like.
Mach 3 blades. The best option for me. My face does still bleed a little but I shower after then it stops. It bleeds a little more with a fresh blade because it hasn't blunted a bit yet.
Whatever way you choose, your best bet is to just map out the direction of the grain, and figure out if it's best to shave towards or against it. I know the hair down near my Adams apple grows upwards so I very lightly shave with the grain as it is SUPER sensitive there. But, near my ears, I go against the grain. Your face is probably very different.
The shave foam/gel helps. I use this stuff and I recommend it. The best stuff I have EVER used was that King C Gillette transparent shave gel (in dark blue bottle) they had at the supermarket a couple of years back but have stopped stocking now. Found bottles in TK Maxx with Arabic writing so I took that, but now it's all depleted. There are some I have just found on Amazon so I might go for that cause I miss it.
I put moisturiser on after and have only just started to do this recently to try and close the pores up, I am still trialling to see if it works. CeraVe is great, but after a shave, that stuff burns me for ages and I have a nice beard shaped red mark across my face. But, as an independent product, I like. Bulldog moisturiser does not burn my face half as bad, and is also a great product for the price. I've only just started doing this after reading about this idea on reddit so I'm happy to take suggestions from anybody else
Overseerer-Vault-101@reddit
Try a shavette. I used to use safety and fancy cartridge and cut myself at least once or twice a shave. Swapped to a shavette and have never cut myself since, and it's like £5.99 for a few hundred blades that are useful as single use extreme Stanley blades.
Nick6819@reddit
I usually shave in the shower with a Gillette Fusion 5, Taylor’s of Old Bond Street Shaving Cream and a badger bristle brush.
First pass I shave with the grain and then lather up again and go against the grain paying attention to the difficult spots.

McLeod3577@reddit
Gillette Mach 3 are decent and quick - use a sensitive shave gel (not foam). A Philips OneBlade is good - buy the one that has different combs and the adjustable comb.
DryGuyWetDog62@reddit
Shave in the shower with a hot face/beard (which softens the hair). Use unscented gel cream. Razor with 5 blades. Dry off the razor when done so it doesn't rust.
SillySinStorm@reddit
I use a safety razor and the blades cost me a fraction of the cost of the alternatives. Takes a little more finesse, but is well worth perservering with.
sharps2020@reddit
Using a Philips one blade, it's basically a mini clipper which gets very close to a zero and the heads last for ages.
Brilliant-Figure-149@reddit
Yep, a very useful gadget but it doesn't get anywhere close to a smooth wet shave. I do use mine to trim round the edges of my stubbly beard (trimmed with a Philips beard trimmer) but for areas that need to be properly smooth I use my trusty Gillette Mach3. BTW if you know anyone who's a Costco member, blades are MUCH cheaper there.
bjhww95@reddit
I think "doesn't get anywhere close" is abit if a reach. I used my oneblade Friday and it's basically clean shaven. It's like 1 day stubble level, if that. It's close enough.
sharps2020@reddit
Tbf I didn't say it did, the question was how do you shave.
bjhww95@reddit
Agreed, they are amazing
Gellert@reddit
I use one for shaving my bits but it leaves my face feeling like sandpaper.
Generally I use hair clippers with the shortest attachment and just have a very short beard. If I need to actually shave I have a safety razor, disposable blades etc.
Inevitable-Debt4312@reddit
Electric - Phillips.
I think it gives a very good close shave. Best kind of shaver I’ve found.
JPMU96@reddit
My go to generally now is the Philips OneBlade. I use it with shaving foam and a few passes which does the trick, not as close as a razor gets but good enough. Braun Electric shaver is another decent option. Have tried cartridge & safety razors too but have had lots of trouble on/off with rashes & cuts hence the OneBlade being my default
thesteelmaker@reddit
Clean your disposable razor after each use, it will last longer.
First_Folly@reddit
Straight razor and oil. I bought a pack of blades years ago and I'm stil getting through them.
Mountain_Yam5882@reddit
I use Harry’s razor for face and head.. not a big fan of electric razors might be cheaper in the long run but I prefer to have full control when shaving than put trust in moving parts ..
Smeeble09@reddit
Philips trimmer, blade set to 2mm and run it over my face twice a week.
letsshittalk@reddit
I’ve had some kind of beard or stubble since I was 15, stopped wet shaving at 23, and never looked back now I’m just four years away from 40.
Significant_Return_2@reddit
I have a beard, but shape it with a Philips One Blade. If I didn’t have the beard, I’d probably shave with that anyway.
It comes with 4 different combs, so you can have different lengths of stubble if you fancy that.
It takes a couple of minutes, it’s the easiest shave I’ve found.
Ilsluggo@reddit
66M with a beard that suggests Neanderthal ancestors. Over the years I have tried everything shy of electrolysis, and short of winning the lottery and being able to afford a daily barber shave, I’ve settled on disposable razors. One tip I can offer - and I really don’t understand the science behind it - is to thoroughly dry off the razor blade after each use. For some reason, this extends the life of the blade a few more shaves. It’s not a panacea, yet a noticeable difference. Feedback from others who have followed this suggestion makes me fairly certain this isn’t just a placebo effect.

blacksmithMael@reddit
When I have time, I shave with a cut-throat razor and hope I don’t.
Usually I use a standard double edged safety razor. If you’re getting nicks I’d try different blades: Feather blades used to cut me to ribbons so I used Shark. I bought a pack of 100 packs for next to nothing about a decade ago, still got a few left.
T_raltixx@reddit
Wilkinson Sword Quatro disposable razors + solid shaving soap applied with a shaving brush. Shave. Then apply post shaving balm to face.
HankHippopopolous@reddit
I use a Phillips one blade.
I find it does a great job of getting close enough but none of the skin irritation I got from a bladed razor.
oscarx-ray@reddit
Beard trimmer to shorten the stubble, then an electric razor to take the stubble down to nothing.
That's plenty for everyday shaving.
If I'm feeling extra fancy, heat and wet my face (either in the shower, with a flannel, or in the sink), lather up some shaving gel/foam, use a new blade and a double-sided safety razor for a close shave. Rinse in cold water, then use a styptic pencil if there are any nicks, and an aftershave balm.
oompaloompagrandma@reddit
Double edged safety razer.
Buy yourself a Merkur 34C, it's commonly regarded as one of the easiest to use.
Get a sample pack of different blades, as different blades work best for different people.
Use a brush and a proper shaving soap and you'll get a lather that works better than any foam from a can.
Also pick up a styptic pencil or alum block. If you do nick yourself you simply rub one of them on the cut and it'll close right up.
Take it nice and slow to begin with, use very little pressure until you get comfortable with it.
Most importantly, treat shaving as a nice thing to do in the morning and not a task to rush through in 30 seconds. Rinse your face off beforehand with nice warm water, use a shaving soap you like the smell of, finish up with a good quality moisturiser. Just take 5 minutes to make it a pleasant experience.
ffuhcu@reddit
This is what I used to do when I wet shaved, by far the best system. I used to like Taylor of old Bond Street sandalwood shaving cream.
Monkeyboogaloo@reddit
Old fashioned safety razor.
Do my head with it as well.
Occasional cut but very occasional.
dobber72@reddit
In the shower while shampooing hair and beard. The warm water softens the hair and the shampoo helps the razor glide smoothly. I've never used shower gel or after shave balm, never had any irritation.
llamafarmadrama@reddit
Cartridge (Mach 3, specifically) if I need it to be done quickly, double edge if I’ve got a bit more time or want it super smooth.
With a DE, you might need to do a bit of experimenting to find a blade that works well for you and your razor, but find something mild and work on your technique first - no pressure, let the weight of the razor do the work and use about a 30 degree angle.
JP2604@reddit
I shave twice a week whilst in the shower.
I start with an electric razor to take the edge off, then have a Harrys manual razor. I don't use shaving cream or anything. I shave whilst conditioner is in my hair, so my face is already wet.
After the shower, I use face cream else my face gets sore.
AlGunner@reddit
Im a bit like you OP. i have a patch where I used to have a scar that is now not noticeable but there is still a bald patch there. Since I first started shaving my neck will have numerous spots where it bleeds with even safety razors or foil electric shavers so I use phillips rotary shavers and have done for decades. Theyre a bit slower than blade or foil razors but have a "lift and cut" feature so slightly pulls the hair before cutting it and leaves a good finish. It does need going over a few times to get it smooth shave though.
The other thing is due to chemical sensitivity Ive never been able to use after shave so just use water instead. Ive never had any issues with my skin because of that but have read many times that things like after shave and moisturizer cause your skin to produce less natural oils so you become reliant on them to moisturize your skin and it becomes dry and sensitive if you dont use them.
dbe14@reddit
Warm your face to open the pores with warm water.
Apply shaving cream or gel (I go with gel because you can warm it in the hot water without it disolving).
Use a decent blade (you get what you pay for), I use a Gillette Mach 3 (classic razor), shave down your face where required to get the thick of it off.
When you've finished going down the face then go up against the grain until smooth.
Towel dry when finished, and apply what ever lotion/aftershave you like to finish. Never fancied using aftershave balm but some people swear by it. I just use aftershave.
That's how I do it anyway.
ffuhcu@reddit
I have heard / stubble so use clippers, when I was clean shaven I used a double edge safety razor as they have the sharpest and cheapest blades along with some fancy Taylor’s of Bond Street shaving cream.

I have a Braun Series 7 which is around 11 years old. Used daily and changed the foil and cutter maybe twice. No complaints.
One holiday I forgot to bring it with me so I ended up buying the cheapest Braun shaver from the local electronics store and it was probably the worst 2 weeks shaving of my life, I eventually just used the free hotel safety razor.
The difference between cheap and expensive electric shavers is really night and day. If you get it from the manufacturer store I think they offer a satisfaction guarantee so you can return if you don't like it, but I think it's worth a try.

Phillips one blade if I leave it too long but I use Lidl’s new pro razor blades for a clean shave, which are surprisingly good for the price. I’ve tried Phillips, Gillette, Harry’s etc but they are all pricy and seem to dull quickly. Honestly try the Lidl razors with some foam.

Leaf razor.
It's similar to a disposable, made of metal, and takes three shavette blades which cost next to nothing. Much better than a double edged safety razor which is impossible to shave my head with I find.

As for someone who mainly shaves head and not the face, definitely knowing about razors and brands is the way to go…I used to use Harry’s razors for my head and it always came out bad, really sore, irritated and bright red. Tried Gillette, Wilkinsons and others with no success.
Boldking is the only razor that I’ve found does the job great, no irritation, razors last for around 2 weeks if I shave my head every 2-3 days

Single blade safety razor. I have a mühle razor and found their blades to suit me best. Sharper blades for coarser beards and less sharp for finer beards. Buy a bunch of different ones and try them all. You'll almost certainly have a wow moment when you find the blades that work for you. I'm sure they have a video showing you how best to use them; it'll be worth watching to make sure you're doing it right.

Gillette Mach 3 twin blades, and Gillette Shaving Gel. Each blade lasts a full month.
I have a heavy beard, so I shave every day.
The razor itself is battery powered (I don't think they make these anymore), which I've had for going on 8 years - AAA battery replaced about every three months. I doubt it does much, but it is comforting, in a weird way.

Disposable razors are all you need. Others are just expensive.
If you have a few days stubble use an electric shaver to take the bulk off.
Have a hot bath or shower.
Soak a flannel in hot water and apply to your face.
Use a brush and soap to lather up your face and shave WITH the grain.
Wipe. Re lather. One more pass with the grain.
Wipe. Lather. Now against the grain.
Now use your fingers to find rough spots. Re shave again with lather.
Now wash.
Another hot towel.
Dry.
Moisturise.
Your face will feel amazing after this.

My dear friend Patrick taught me the technique I've used for decades. Very simple. Cheap razors yes, Gillette Blue 2. Work perfectly fine for everyday shaving.
The technique is to have a good badger-hair brush and use that to lather up. You want the suda as wet & sloppy as possible, not thick & sticky like on tv. And the key, key thing is to let it sit for 3 or 4 mins before you shave. I brush my teeth in the meantime. Works fine every time.
And big 5-blade monsters for special occasions only, when you want an ultra-close shave. Same technique though.

Took me about 2yrs to get to a point of full confidence with a safety razor

Gilette Mach 3, while in the shower. Dry off the blades by rubbing on a towel and blowing the excess water off afterwards.
I shave every other day, usually. One blade lasts several months.
Inner-Status-7997@reddit
You should dip them in alcohol
Pizza_CricketDiyMan@reddit
I use this too and they last a longtime, but I do mine in the sink and just wet the stubble first
Switching to a clear shaving gel has really helped me
Foxtrot7888@reddit
Does drying the blades make them last longer? I shave every other day and only use a blade twice as it seems blunt after that.
geekroick@reddit
Yep!
"Why do Razor Blades go Dull?
The process of shaving itself routinely dulls the blades, but isn’t the only cause. Moisture is usually the biggest culprit. Water corrodes the blades so the sharp edge becomes more blunt and less effective. Keeping your blades clean and dry can help to maintain their sharpness.
Rinsing razor to keep blades sharp
Make sure you thoroughly rinse your razor head after shaving to clean hair and soap residue from the blades. You can use an old toothbrush to clean it more deeply, but usually this isn’t necessary.
After rinsing your blades, pat your razor dry using a clean towel. This removes the majority of the moisture that causes dullness and helps to keep your blades sharp.
Oil and water don’t mix, which means that oil is a great way to prevent moisture from affecting your razor blades. Try leaving your razor, head down, in a small pot of baby oil (or mineral oil). This helps keep your razor blades sharp by stopping moisture from corroding the metal. However, this isn’t a good idea for cartridge razors with a hydration strip as the oil could dissolve it.
If the oil technique is impractical for you or doesn’t suit your variety of razor, then the way you store your razor is critical. To keep the blades sharp, it’s important to keep them away from moisture. This means you shouldn’t leave your razor out in the bathroom. The best thing to do is to invest in a cover for your razor. This helps to reduce the amount of moisture that reaches the blades. Choose the right cover for your specific type of razor to ensure it fits well. This leather sheath for a double edge safety razor is a simple and inexpensive way to protect the head of your razor and help to keep the blades sharp. Muhle also do a plastic bladeguard that works equally well. Even with a bladeguard or case, ensure your razor is stored away from moist areas. For example, put it in the bathroom cupboard rather than leaving it by the sink."

Phillips rotary, quality razor blades too expensive & the cheap ones obviously don't last long.
Bought Phillips in a sale & replace rotary blades once a year, wouldn't go back to blades.
SwordTaster@reddit
If your blades are going dull quickly, store them in baby oil. It'll get the water off (the water is what's ruining the blade) and it's good for the skin
Scrot123@reddit
I got a Philips oneblade. Lots of people don't like them, but I need to shave about once a week so it's a good balance between hassle free shaving and cost.
Oohoureli@reddit
It’s as much about technique as tools.
The cheapest way is to get yourself a double-edged (DE) razor and blades online, a boar or synthetic brush, and some soap or cream depending on your preference. That will work out a lot cheaper than cartridges.
Then learn how to use them. There are tons of shaving tutorial videos out there, but essentially hot water, friction, and time are your friends. So many people complain about results without doing the necessary preparation, but it repays a bit of study and time to get your whiskers in the best condition to be shaved.

Tumeni1959@reddit
Get a half-decent Gillette or Wilkinson Sword razor and blades. Make sure your face, the beard area obviously, is wet and HOT. Use a facecloth or similar, get the basin water really hot, and use the facecloth held against the face for as long as you can, multiple times, to heat and wet it, and to soften the hairs. Apply shaving foam or cream and lather onto the beard area with hands or a shaving brush. Shave.
Rinse with cold water to close the pores after you're done. Apply some moisturising after shave, not an alcohol-based astringent one.
Try this, then report back.

I really like the process of shaving with an old school safety razor. Soap in a pot, making a cream with the brush.
But I just grow out a beard now, clip it from time to time when I look like jack black. I now have lots of white beard hair so pendant looks patchy too.
I know this is a video promoting some particular shaving products, but I used it to get an idea of how to shave with the safety razor (then couldn't believe I had spent 20 minutes watching and guy shaving):
How to Shave With a Safety Razor
dartiss@reddit
I have facial hair like Homer Simpson - as soon as I shave, the 5 o'clock shadow instantly appears.
Here's what I do...
Where an electric shave is better than a wet one, is that it can safely get in areas of the face that you wouldn't dare put a sharp blade, such as the corners of your mouth, or where it generally struggles, like on the contours of the chin. You're right, an electric shaver isn't particularly effective but it has some advantages.
Go for the best quality one you can - I went for a high-end Braun, when on discount, many years ago. I clean it regularly and replace the shave head when it says and it's still like new.
To get closer, Boots used to do (but don't they still do) a pre-electric shave lotion that was pretty much like the stuff you used to use to clean records with (mainly alcohol but with some moisturising agent on it). That makes your facial hair stiffer, which results in a sharper and better cut.
What's important at this stage is to have a dry face.
Hot water and give it a good wash, with some cleanser. Razors, if they come across any dry skin or detritus on the face, will jump over it, missing portions of stubble, so a clean face is important. The hot water will help open the pores too, allowing the razor to get to more of the hair (if I understand the science correctly).
Shave gel - unless you absolutely have to use it, don't use a sensitive skin shave gel. They don't have the acid content in them that's important to a good shave (these acids, again, help to prepare the face for your shave). Leave the gel on as long as you have time for - it's getting too long if it's breaking up and disappearing, but a few minutes is good.
Get a good razor that you trust. I use the Gillette Labs and that works for me. Thanks to the electric shave earlier you can avoid those area that are most likely going to get cut, so you can concentrate on the straight, smooth parts of the face.
Dip in the hot water as much as you can to clean and warm up the razor. Take it slow and carefully, pulling the skin to make everything as straight and flat as possible, to avoid nicks. I very rarely nick myself - once every 6 months at worst, I'd say.
Oh, and one further tip - don't shave if your face it cold. If you've just come in from outside, for instance, wait a while before shaving.
Not that I'm saying the above is any kind of be-all-and-end-all solution, but my own personal way, honed over around 30 years. But what works one, may not for others.

after trying many different methods, I've settled on a Cambridge cut throat with disposable single blades. It's five minutes of calm in a otherwise busy day.
Cuts happen when you rush.
r_Coolspot@reddit
Single blade safety razor, (merker 15c open comb) with feather blades. Badger brush with sandlewood shaving cream. Followed up with a bar of alum. Hand clippers for long growth. Clippercide to clean and protect the gear. Store the blades in your sock draw to avoid moisture.
Phatboybeware@reddit
I use Gillette Excel which is a2 blade cartridge razor which i find is enough blades vs price point. Although it is more difficult to find these in the stores.
I shave before I shower and exfoliate the area a day before I shave with a scrub. On the day I apply hot water to the lower part of my face and neck, this opens up the pores to allow an easy shave. Do this multiple times, or use a hot towel for a minute instead.
I use a good hair conditioner instead of shave gel/ foam/ oil. It's the least messiest, cheapest and allows you to see where you are shaving.
First shave downwards on the face then neck, then wash your face again with hot water and apply the hair conditioner again. This time shave upwards and across the jaw line.
Finish off with cold water to close the pores. You'll have a clean shave.

Electric facial hair trimmer to stubble length. I very rarely have a fully clean shaven.
I can't grow a good beard either but stubble looks good.
sparklybeast@reddit
I used to get my face waxed until they burnt me one time. Then I tried hair removal cream but had an allergic reaction to it, so now I just use a disposable razor and water. It’s certainly a lot cheaper!
nahladel9000@reddit
I use the Superdrug own brand 5 blade system because it's cheap and doesn't cut me to bits. I'm told it's the same as either the Aldi or Lidl one. A blade lasts probably 2 months, shaving once every 2-3 days, no razor burn unless my technique is off. Yearly spend is probably under £10. Tesco own brand shaving cream.
Elliott_Ness1970@reddit
Similar to this but the Amazon version. King of Shaves gel.

Got an expensive foil shaver for a clean shave. Best money I’ve ever spent - it’s 6 years old and still going strong. Just a case of replacing the blade/foil every couple of years.

I’m balding so I mainly shave my head. First I use clippers and then use a double edge safety razor afterwards.

Phillips one blade for years now, never looked back.

Phillips rotary shaver. Used them for 30 years.
Alternative-Sea-6238@reddit
In the shower, for a few.minutes so your skin warms up. Then lather shampoo on. Wait for a couple of minutes. Then I use admittedly fairly cheap sensitive disposable razor (I think it's Wilkinson Sensitive). Shave with the grain. Then rinse, lather with conditioner and gently shave against the grain.
Works for me, took a long while to find the ideal technique and blade.
Asleep-Software-4160@reddit
Safety razor, you just need to get used to it. Switched from cartridge razors about ten years ago and haven't looked back. I use Astra blades.
-Precious_Gem@reddit
I saw this on "Queer Eye" many years ago and have used it to dhave my legs ever since! Wash with warm soapy water, rinse, rub on oil, apply shaving foam/gel/soap and shave. Thr razors don't last long but it's a close, comfortable, smooth shave.
TwirlipoftheMists@reddit
Double edge safety razor.
£10 pack of blades lasts a year, barely used all the soaps I was gifted years ago. Brush. Proraso aftershave balm.
I found my grandfather’s 1920s Gillette safety razor and sometimes use that for sentimental reasons.
barriedalenick@reddit
I am a hairy git but I only shave every few days and don't mind a bit of stubble, In fact it is easier to shave when the hair is a little longer.
I use a brush, some nice shaving soap (Taylor of Old Bond Street - Sandalwood) and some Harry's blades. Have a good hot wash, rinse, lather up and get to it. Then I normally go over again with the remaining soap to catch any stray hair. Then a cold splash and maybe a bit of moisturiser..
Safety blades are fine but you need to take time with them - it takes more than a few attempts and you will cut yourself.
Time-Mode-9@reddit
I shave once or twice a week (basically when it gets itchy).
I use an electric trimmer, and an electric razor.
The razor doesn't really work unless the hair is already short, and the trimmer doesn't get close enough, and leaves it a bit patchy. The two in combinator work.
mooki5@reddit
I use clippers and the a gillette Mach razor. Good to know the directions and best way to shave if not already familiar. I always stopped at the jaw line when coming down from the side of face but actually it’s best to go down a bit further under jaw line before shaving up the neck.
ServerLost@reddit
Bowl soap and brush, Gillette razor. I find it lasts longer and is better for your skin than foam.
Nomis1982@reddit
I haven't been clean shaven since 2005. Have always had some form of stubble or beard since then. Use a beard trimmer once a week, on various settings depending on if I'm in a stubble period or beard period.
tygeorgiou@reddit
I've always used a Gillette triple blade and I'd change the tip once every month or so, but I recently got a fancy electric razor with a guard that presses down as you use it
saves time money and effort at the exchange of a huge razor burn on the middle neck every time because I haven't figured out how to use it yet... but again you save time money and effort so that is a win in my book
aje0200@reddit (OP)
I wonder if there’s a lot of different type of electric razors that all work differently? Mine seems to just vibrate a surface, it isn’t sharp.
UnfortunateWah@reddit
You can get foil and rotary shavers.
Rotary can be a bit gentler but generally works better in longer hair ie shaving every 3-4 days.
Foil will give a closer shave, but if you’re shaving say daily you need to give it some pressure and shave against the grain or else the hair won’t get able to get past the guard.
Wet shaving with a compatible electric shaver works well for me as a I have to shave daily for work.
tygeorgiou@reddit
yeah there's a few, this one has sharp blades inside that run side to side under a guard that presses in towards the blade when you put pressure on
so even on the chin it cuts nice and low without cutting skin, I actually have no idea why I get a rash on my neck each time
it's called Panasonic 3 blade or something like that

Electric razor to get it short, then a Bulldog for complete hair eradication.
Bulldog is honestly goated, I rave about them to everyone in my family, even the ladies in my fam are now using them for everything.
Historical_Cobbler@reddit
I only shave after a shower to soften my skin, but I use a brush and shaving soap as the aerosol cans draw moisture out for me.
I use a double edge safety razor, they’re very cheap but there’s some really good ones. I like Astra blades.
Always moisture afterwards.
GuybrushFunkwood@reddit
Electric shaver for my face (don’t scrimp buy a decent set) for my knackers I use the hair clippers to get rid of the man bush after I’ve shaved my head. For my knackers I always do them in a nice hot shower, lather plenty of shaving gel (I use the wife’s as it’s the really good non irritating stuff) and a ladies safety razor. You want to pull your meat coconut sack nice and taut and take your time don’t rush.

Using a safety razor is a bit of an art but will save you money. Stick with it.
