>\> doesn't eat a handful of benzadrine and turn his neighbor's broken washing machine into a CNC mill

I know you’re joking but mushrooms don’t do allat, they’re way tamer than media makes them out to be. “Movie mushrooms” are more like acid than actual mushrooms.
If you think that, you just haven't taken enough mushrooms of sufficiently high quality.
Psilocybin can produce very powerful hallucinations - it just has a low unit potency. The body can absorb a hell of a lot more of it than you would find in the average pile that someone would find physically comfortable eating at one time. Psilocybin also degrades fairly rapidly over time if it's not chemically isolated - so unless you're growing a genetically selected high-potency strain yourself, you're eating a lot more dead vegetable matter than you should be.
By the way, modern LSD tends to be a bit.... nasty. Impure, irresponsibly made - not necessarily toxic, just.... bad. Prone to containing a lot of derivative chemicals with unpleasant effects. I would generally recommend avoiding it these days.
Yeah I do mushrooms regularly and they just don’t do that. I don’t know what to tell you, I’ve tripped on every dose imaginable and you’ll never “meet the center of the universe”.
The worst it gets is seeing uncontrollable imagery, and have recurring, looping intrusive thoughts. But the thing with mushrooms is that you’re never totally disconnected from reality when you’re on them. Acid or LSD make you believe that your trip is real, I’ve taken obscene amounts of mushrooms and have never had the same feeling.
Well.. there are some people who just don't vibe with psilocybin - by the same token some people find even the best Acid more of a.... sideshow than a true mind expander. I had always been under the anecdotal impression that such people were very rare, so I assumed otherwise on your case. I hope you don't think I was dismissing your personal experience - if you say they don't work for you, I believe you - still, if you don't know anyone who's had transcendent experiences on Psilocybin, you can find confirmation that it's possible with trip reports on the internet.
I'm apparently the reverse of you. Mushrooms are strong and even chemically purified acid tends to be more of a loopy distraction than a proper trip. I also think it's worse than taking nothing when poorly made - while some either don't care or even have a specific fondness for some type of dirty 'body-heavy' acid. When you are talking about the chemical complexities of the brain - I suppose it's natural that your mileage may vary.
guys be like "i'm so lonely and depressed"
\>symptom of depression
\>symptom of depression
\>symptom of depression that causes loneliness
\>symptom of depression
\>symptom of depression
Likely not, sometimes people just don't like doing things. Depression is when it's all encompassing, like you never get better, you never want to do anything at all.
I'm telling what you need to do to get better or at least not get worse, it's incredibly productive the problem is people are addicted to feeling sorry for themselves and avoid struggle at all costs (both things you make you more depressed btw).
that's not even close to a contradiction to what i said
depression being a hormonal imbalance is a matter of the medical cause, not the personal lived experience
I don't think many people believe it's a hormonal balance. Your likely thinking of serotonin and the serotonin theory of depression, that was disproven by psychologists and neurologists yet is still believed by many normal people. Serotonin isn't a hormone, but a lot of people understandably get that mixed up.
But that doesn't mean depression isn't biological, it absolutely is and there's more evidence now for that than there ever was in the past. There's tonsss of brain structure abnormalities associated with depression like an **atrophied hippocampus**. And in older adults **white matter lesions**, especially in vascular depression.
What I dont understand is the armchair psychology in these comments and in general around depression. You have HUNDREDS of unique functional areas in the brain, some are associated with mood, vision, motivation, sleep, movement etc etc. Each part can become damaged or disrupted for a wide variety of reasons. Vision part of your brain gets messed up? Could go blind without any physical damage to the eye. Movement part of your brain gets messed up? parkinsons or dystonia or some other movement related disorder. Sleep area of brain messed up? sleep phase disorder, insomnia, narcolepsy. Memory area of brain? dementia, alzheimers, amnesia...
Are there not mood area of your brain? It seems soooo simple and easy to understand. The mood and motivation areas of your brain ARE NOT FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT FROM ANY OTHER PART OF YOUR BRAIN. There is a literal physical piece of flesh in your brain that is responsible for your mood. Why is it so hard to believe that piece of flesh can get damaged or dysfunctional? It can happen to EVERY other part of your body.
The physical differences in the brain that cause and are caused by depression actually sound on paper a lot scarier than just a "hormone imbalance". Things like an atrophied hippocampus, overactive amygdala, atrophied PFC, white matter lesions, etc, etc, all sound a lot scarier and more serious than just a hormone imbalance lol.
Different brain structure abnormalities are associated with different presentations/types of depression as well, this is a good read. And shows how different types of brain structure abnormalities associated with depression affect treatment response. [https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2024/06/depression-biotypes.html](https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2024/06/depression-biotypes.html) How would that ever be possible if depression was just a willpower or action thing?
It's true nobody is going to fix their depression without willpower and the actual WANT and MOTIVATION to get better. Your long term psychological state and frame of mind affects treatment outcomes a lot. Most of the time you need to take control of your life to fix your depression but that's not always the case. Depression is **most often caused by a large combination of factors, both biological and controllable.** It's not purely psychological. And it's rarer, but sometimes it 1000% can be almost entirely biological. Most animals can get depression, it's not a uniquely human thing it's literally just a rare side effect of having a brain.
What I meant to say is that people believe that depression is caused by this hormone imbalance and that their actions had nothing to do with that, like they got a cold or something.
Of course physically you can notice differences between the brain of someone who is depressed x someone who isn't but my point is, that difference came to be because of the way you lived your life and not because your brain suddenly got a defect on the majority of cases.
And yes from what I see most people think like that, probably not because of ignorance, probably they never thought about it and never had someone explain it to them.
You are both right I'd say. Psychological factors are a good predictors of mental illness, meaning shitty living conditions, relationships problems, daddy/mommy issues etc, especially in young age, they can get dragged subconsciously on and eventually turn out as some kind of mood disorder / mental illness. After that, you brain starts to malfunction, you get problems with mood, memory, cognition... and it becomes much harder to heal, sort of deadlock (or catch-22) situation.
That doesn't entirely justify taking pills, those were marketed without being proven to work hence the "serotonin imbalance" myth. Think of something like
Y'know what, fuck it, I wasn't gonna say anything but here's my two cents: I have a life. Have friends, a job, leave home at least twice a month on "leisure", play games watch anime read books, have a family I'm on good terms with.
Fuck life, fuck being alive, I didn't ask for any of this, and I don't wanna keep doing this for 80 more years.
What about now, Sherlock?
Sure, from what you said I can only think of
You probably think you deserve things that you don't.
You probably aren't grateful for the good things you have.
Idk you tho its hard to tell but for most people it is what I just said and
\-Not eating healthy, not exercising regularly and having bad sleeping habits (no point in trying anything before fixing these)
\-Having addictions (weed and porn being the most common)
\-Constantly going agaisnt your morals, this one destroys your self esteem and makes you rely on other people's affections for you to feel worthy (extremely fragile)
\-Seeing your obligations as suffering.
\-Not trying to become more virtuos
Hope you get better, but I can't diagnose you, you should look for a good therapist
well yeah that is how it works he's just not wording it in a reddit friendly way so it's really easy for you to make him look dumb
i have PDD btw before you try to jump on my ass
If it was entirely impossible to break out of it people would've been stuck in their depressions for eternity.
You can't just overcome, but you have to keep trying.
You know what's funny, i read through your profile a bit and you seem like someone who's the complete opposite of me, and yet we're similar. That's kinda odd
How does playing games or watching stuff help with this? It is not like you make friends watching anime o playing a game (online maybe, but still a long shot).
Yeah, it's because we're not allowed to kill ourselves so we're just stuck in an existence we never wanted in the first place to make everyone else feel better. The best we can do is hope everyone comes to hate us for being miserable bastards so we can finally have sweet release without consequences.
I can't do shit because the stress makes me depressed. I never have enough money for anything even though work and studying for work take up most of my time. I don't want to do shit because what's the point? I'm tired.
I have a coworker like this. When I suggested we go out and get drinks he’s like “how about you come over and we drink and watch YouTube videos”
I’m good bro
I think this is more aimed at people than don't do anything with their lives and think life is boring rather than people with actual diagnosable depression.
I mean. He is depressed. He can't do shit because of this. It's like asking a homeless person to buy a house. That's kind of the whole point, they can't.
Depression is a self-sustaining feedback loop. If it was easy to get rid of, it wouldn't be a problem to begin with. If you don't solve the actual underlying issue, it will be back.
It's shit to deal with, because it hijacks your agency. Whining makes depressed people even more depressed, it is the only way they can allow themselves to reach out for help.
One of the biggest reasons behind depression, to be honest. But it's a feature, because it makes a lot of people think that they are the problem, they underachieved or some shit. Depression is good for complacency. Just look at Russia.
i mean, probably
but op said that to get out of it, it's like asking a homeless person to buy a house. Well i'm not homeless and i still wouldnt be able to buy one. Not to mention that actually, not having a place to live is the least of the problems a homeless person has
This is me because I have ADHD or smth and will stand in the middle of my room staring off into space thinking about all my options, until I finally get the smallest inclination to play shadow of Mordor.
It's a bad idea telling these dudes that they are solely responsible for the state of their well being. Self accountability is not one of their strong suits
