It's possible but has a high emotional effort on your part. Totally depends in your ability to not give a fuck or be very charismatic plus the luck of the draw that there might not be anyone to talk to. If it were me, id start at the bar and start by speaking to the bartender if possible. Usually if u drink at the bar long enough youll get speaking to other folk in the queue. I probably wouldn't approach tables in the UK just because some people are very closed minded or not well socialised here. The fact you are even thinking of doing this suggests you will smash it by the way. Good luck!

I think the answer might definitely depend on location. I go out on my own (30F) in a major city fairly often, except I don't make much effort to engage in conversation with strangers. People stare, a lot. You also get approached by creepy men at a far higher rate, and people are more likely to grope you.

Men do it so why can't you? When I lived abroad I would go to bars and gigs alone, met my drinking buddy that way. I'd usually just people watch and sit at the bar when alone. Have 1 or 2 drinks and then go home. If it's a pub with a solo people's bar seats, you can post up there and greet yourself. My biggest issue is avoiding men that think any woman being cordial with them must want them. My drinking buddy had a girlfriend and he was just interested in meeting foreigners who spoke the language and to widen his horizons. Had dinner with his gf too, went dancing with him, nothing dodgy though. It was nice, he's got 2 kids now and he sends them both to salsa classes.

Apologies, see my other reply. I was kind of thinking of that having just typed it, but out of context I can see why I seemed dismissive there! I agree, OP should go for it. But as you say, there are unfortunately pitfalls involved (potentially) which is a sad indictment on our society but we can't just wave a magic wand and make them go away. If I could, I would, as I'm sure you would too.

I do it all the time, but I am an old man. Might be worth asking on your local subreddit where people would recommend to go and sit and have a drink and read a book. If it is anywhere like the pubs I started going to you won't get any grief and you will soon have people talking to you.

Not weird at all, I see people on their own in pubs all the time and think nothing of it. After a few pints people will talk to anyone lol. Just be careful as unfortunately there are people out there who will pray on lone females!

No it isnt weird. I do it, I'm 38F. I also go on solo dates, have meals out reading a book. Treating yourself to something that doesn't involve another person is allowed. Start slow, make sure you enjoy doing it and if it is for you. Do a quiz night. Look to see if one of the pubs has a live band night that interests you. Look at other social groups, away from the pub too, libraries have groups on. Enjoy yourself ❤️

It’s normal. I go to the pub semi regularly to read a book and give my dog his weekly fix of roast beef and Yorkshire puddings. Drunk people are very talkative so even if you’re shy you’ll make friends.

Depends on the pub. Go to somewhere a bit alternative with a diverse clientele (different ages and nationalities) and I think you'll be grand to stand at the bar and chat with the regulars and bar staff. At my local there's a few women regulars who stop in for a pint most days (not suggesting that drinking a pint most days is fine but that doesn't stop lots of folk)

I feel learning to go to the pub or dine on your own means you’ve really become an adult. It’s totally not weird and can feel very liberating, just sitting there having a quiet pint and watching the world go by. Go a few times, nod/smile at the regulars, become a familiar face and start talking to them.

Same answer as always - While people on Reddit will try to be nice and say "yeah go for it. No one will care!" the fact is in some pubs people will think it's odd if you're just in a pub on your own as a young woman. Do I agree that's fine? Absolutely not, it's a bizarre quirk in our psychology/culture that is a hangover from Victorian values and it winds me up that it is often the case. But on the flip side there's no harm in it and you may happen to meet people then make friends for life. Depends if you give a shit what other people think (pro tip as someone with nearly 20 years on you - you shouldn't, within reason of course). Be aware in some pubs you may also attract unwanted male attention, a problem that is a scourge on all levels of society unfortunately. But again depends on the pub.

I was working alone away from home and fancied a pub visit. There were a few groups of people around my age sat at a few tables, I just approached one of them like “Hey, not trying to be weird but I’m alone here. Do you mind if I sit with you?” It was a great night in the end.

We acquired one of our friends because she came to the pub alone on quiz night - joining a team with other people gives you something to talk about and if you have things in common they tend to come up in conversation... And if you don't you can just join another team next time. Highly recommend!
