Lamborghini Diablo VT used by Volkswagen as a mule for the Bugatti Veyron, carrying the W16 quad-turbo engine

Volkswagen had four of these mules made, this yellow one is the sole survivor. Somehow they managed to shoehorn the massive engine into the almost-stock bodywork.

That was one hell of a packaging assignment.

There’s a video floating around about the owner of this mule. He or she has an insane collection of Bugattis, both new era and pre-war. I’ll try to find it and post it. It is truly mind blowing the number of one offs, etc they have. (An anonymous owner, I believe in Germany)

Well this one's owner is Volkswagen\^\^ It's at the Autostadt Collection.

I’m not sure what the provenance is of the car you posted. See the YT link in my post, there’s a yellow mule in a private collection. So maybe more than one survived? Cool post, forgot about the Veyron development story! Rabbit holes galore!

Amazing car, but that crooked rear bumper is really bothering me...

Not the missing taillight?

Looks like there’s a scuff on the corner, probably pulled off an accidental wall tap drift…

It's a mule - one of best things about it is that it likely got thrashed to within an inch of its life.

Well VW couldn't touch that car, they only bought the Bugatti name. The rights and everything to the 110 went to Dauer (who then also folded)

Quad turbo? That's insane level engineering!

That makes sense. Thanks. Unbelievable engineering indeed.

The first Veyron-prototype had 18 cylinders and 3 turbos (hence "Veyron 18.3 Concept", they cut it down to 16 Cylinders and added a turbo to compensate (making it the 16.4)

Any idea how the turbo piping goes? Like does each bank get its own turbo or do they all just dump into one (or 2?) intake manifolds?

One per bank, the later Chiron SS models use 2 pairs of sequential turbos

You think that’s insane? (Try Octo turbo](https://www.hotrod.com/features/hrdp-0411-1957-chevy-bel-air)! Evidently not particularly as fast as you’d imagine and you could probably get the same results from a twin setup, but as a feat of engineering it’s fantastic.

Whistlin Diesel really made a truck whistle.. i think it was 32 turbos? Im sure most were fake though.  Rob Dahm took an Indycar Cosworth engine and put 4 turbos on it lol, very cool stuff.

Every single one was plumbed in. There's a video of it driving around and they all produced soot underload. It made 5 less HP than the standard truck did.

TBH I'd rather have this hot-rod Diablo than a Veyron.

Hell yeah, this looks incredible, the Veyron looks like a pig (literally). Chiron is cool though.

Yeah the Veyron is weird looking. Iconic, legendary...but weird.

The Veyron just predates the aggressive styling of today. Hell I worked for a luxury dealership once who had one for sale, and I had a hard time convincing a customer that the "weird wide plug" in the center console was for an iphone\^\^

I disagree. I love the look of the Veyron (and personally prefer it to the Chiron)

Black/Red Veyron, dreamcar of my childhood. The technology and performance was just unbelievable at the time

I have to absolutely agree. In my case I just like the Diablo VT's styling better than the Veyron/Chiron.

Engine by looks like typical VW engineering.
View on Reddit #76747815

Random_Introvert_42@reddit (OP)

Well VW did develop it\^\^ They wanted to stick it in a Bugatti, Audi and Bentley, but only the Bugatti came into existence. Just cut down from 18 to 16 cylinders.

Pretty smart choice. It's designed for high speeds and the room for the engine in the back is enormous.
