Oh, not at all. America is the epicenter of capitalism in the world here. We're fucking Mordor.
Mordor ain't gonna solve its problems w a fuckin protest.
I mean at some point I genuinely feel like the world has to actually fucking end with nuclear bombs raining from the sky or foreign armies doing to a few major USA cities and their countrysides what te USA has been doing forever for some people to get the fucking point.
Why would the mouth of the empire talk about the ways it could be different? The revolution will not be televised, and neither will the collapse, most likely
it's so crazy to see how little coverage we are getting right now. thousands of people protested yesterday (not just yesterday, but that was the biggest turn out) yesterday hundreds of businesses also closed for a strike.
Under Obama, covert, same under Clinton. Overt under Bush or during the establishment of the state, and now uder Trumpt.
Frankly, it has always been fascistic, just at times it was disguised as something that was bringing democracy to those who were already had it by their own measures.
To provide for my household, I work as what is classified as a health services provider for young children.
Calling out twice more will get me fired, by policy.
They will quickly replace me with a new wage slave, to continue helping the children. Meanwhile, my household will lose their home and food.
Do you have any more helpful suggestions? 🤔
If we wanted to do that we’d be stealing food and building fortifications. If I stop working because of something that doesn’t have an immediate, obvious impact on my life, I lose my home, my family, and as a result my job.
I always remember this photo by Melanie Einzig on 9/11. The world collapses all around us, but until that final tipping point, we still have bills to pay.

Idk, I think for many people sticking to the schedule when they can't do anything else helps them *not* feel helpless, you know?
I remember watching the first plane hit while getting ready for school. Then, the other. In the car on the way to school the radio was just noise. People crying. It was intense. In every class we had a TV on and watched the news all day. We saw the man who fell/leapt out of the window. It's all we could do-- just watch. A few people had family in New York. It sucked and we were all the way in CA.
I remember just thinking about all those people. All the firemen and police. The hospitals. The families. I just cried. But, we went to school and work everyday. There's nothing else we could do. I mean I remember packing up care packages for the NY schools, but it felt very very small in the scope of things.
Seeing this man, makes me feel a little better. He did what we did. He kept going, because it's literally ALL he could do.
Or... Maybe he didn't hear it? Was blissfully unaware?
Shit… I was in Manhattan that day, working on a freelance job in a bedding showroom on 19th Street. Literally got off the train, climbed the stairs, walked to work without even having a clue that the towers were on fire south of me. My coworkers let me know, I walked to 6th Avenue to see, had a surreal moment of hugging a total stranger as she wept, looked some more… then walked back to work. My crew all knew that getting off the island was going to be a major pain, so we decided to proceed with our job until we had a better idea of what to do and how to stay safe. What else could we do?
I keep finding myself torn between feeling an obligation to zoom out - to look at the bigger picture and see what I can do - and the obligation to zoom in - to focus on my family, my job, my house - the things I can more meaningfully control and the things and people I am useless to if I burn myself out stressing and acting on larger issues I can't really effect.
Been thinking a lot lately about Children of Men. It feels like everyone is ideologically exhausted. The current metacrisis is definitionally beyond any individual’s capacity to meaningfully intervene. I think even the oligarchs feel it; it’s why they’re plowing impossible amounts of cash into this quixotic attempt to build god machines, getting geeked to the gills on designer pharmaceuticals and publicly melting down.
The century-long project of atomization, at least in the west, was so successful that at this critical moment for collective action, the concept just can’t obtain for the average person. Speaking for myself I strive to be reliable, but cannot imagine relying on anyone beyond a small circle of intimate friends, on a scale utterly unequal to the task at hand.
In the absence of a new course, we sleepwalk into the fire together.
Theo: "A hundred years from now there won't be one sad fuck to look at any of this. What keeps you going?"
Nigel: "You know what it is, Theo? I just don't think about it."
i think about this exchange often
"The current metacrisis is definitionally beyond any individual’s capacity to meaningfully intervene"
I really like that part, cause i been seeing alot of posts lately about how we are supposed to be doing something, often posted by people outside the usa and im like "wtf we gonna do ourselves about it"
Great way to describe the situation we are in.
How about just like.... turn the fucking power off? Like these despots don't seem to grasp that their entire power structure relies on electricity. Fucking get I.B.E.W. on your side and see how quick they capitulate.
Noooo, not like that! Your supposed to support my feigned helplessness and praise me! I cant do anything because I am too comfortable, wont anyone think of me!!
Regardless of where one lives, one must keep working and keep the routine. believe it or not... there are far far worse places on the planet. As they say, this too will pass.
In a world requiring me to use money, with neighbors insisting on that money, with people thumping the ideology that you have to have money to survive, I'm kinda not siding with you and kinda saying, "Geez that'd be great can we do that now?" Knowing no, we can't because we're brainwashed and the so-called 'leaders' are addicts. I would like that idea more if I thought my brainwashed parents weren't correct in their immediate reply to me wasn't apparently correct: "There'll always be money."
Until society collapses, we still have bills to pay, the need for food and medical care. The world doesn't stop spinning just because some crisis-level bullshit is happening
Real tribal communities are able to band together. Whatever happens they deal with it together. There's no money or landlords, bosses, cops, judges, politicians, taxes, bills etc.. I would trade the comforts of my life to live like that.
Several countries offer that, They're known as the Third World, I've seen some up close and I'd wager most people that tried it won't last 30 days. The poorest people in The United States live like Royalty compared to the amazingly hard life in third world countries. I have great respect for those live those labor intensive lives.
That is just stupid. Money does not grow from trees. Unless you have a million or two stashed somewhere, do you want to be out on the street with no money to buy food?
Don't make it sound like it is a philosophical discussion.
Federal Reserve Fiat Notes are a Fraudulent Currency - Gold & Silver Coin represented with Silver & Gold Certificate Treasury Notes in The United States, when we had REAL MONEY, That's why they had taken it away from us in 1913, Our treasury notes represented the actual gold & silver that gave our treasury notes value. Federal Reserve Fiat Currency Notes are the Inflationary tool created to extract the wealth of Americans to the Federal Reserve Families, through Inflation (money printing & taxation the removal of tax dollars from the federal government to the banking families through interest payments) a very nice system, IF YOU OWN & CONTROLL IT !!!!!
If the Federal Government stopped printing Federal Reserve Notes the country would be in complete anarchy within 30 days or less. Without constant printing of fiat currency the Federal Government can not afford to operate. There is No Longer a Federal Budget requirement because they must constantly print fiat currency (currency backed by nothing) to service the myriad entitlement programs that they use to control States & Citizens. Bankruptcy is the only logical conclusion, once the interest payments consume every tax dollar collected to service the debt without ever paying one dollar of principal off.
If people you know are telling you serious trouble is coming our way, They're Right !
Philosophically speaking, it is unjust that so few people have so many resources, while *so* many people have such few avenues for recourse that they don’t have the luxury of even making a decision based on principle. Y’know, insanely selfish resource hoarding and the implementation of artificial scarcity in the midst of metric tons of mindless waste being generated in the name of profit.
No, you can’t eat philosophy. But if philosophy is broadly defined as the systematic study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, and reason, among other things, anyone saying “this is stupid” is not arguing in good faith.
Sorry, I can't get over the inane defense of a corpocrat class that always pops up whenever someone suggests we should make the most of a horrendously broken system.
You'll likely be contributing more labor than you are now, or taking a massive hit to your standard of living, or both. Probably both.
The basic fact is that if you're in the US and you're not homeless, you're consuming more than your fair share of resources
Institutionalized.
Live and die on your knees with some crumbs in your hands. Don't call stupid those who are becoming aware that they can't stop you if you all stand up.
My thoughts exactly. I also wonder what that person has in mind when they say they ought to be “recovering”.
Life hasn’t materially changed for 90% of the population, and for the ones that have been affected - the best coping mechanism is to ensure food continues to be on the table.
As an Insider that despises both corporate owned political parties, it appears the country is split with one half fighting for socialism and the other half fighting for corporate-ism, I support neither. Which leads me to believe that nobody will fight for Constitutionalism (which I do support). It seems the more the Federal Government oversteps it's constitutional authority things get increasingly worse for everyone that supports these political parties.
I try to read and understand both sides of these complex issues, I never read anyone demanding to see the Federal Government be removed from arears they clearly have no constitutional authority, also I rarely see citizens advocate for the States Rights under the10th Amendment to be reinstated either.
If states stopped turning over their state tax revenue to the federal government, then maybe they would regain their power to operate their states as their residents see fit. Since every state is the recipient of Federal "Fiat Currency" Funding they are also beholden to the Federal Overreach they must surrender to in order to receive that endless inflationary funding.
Quite a strange arrangement, as each state was to be an experiment of ideas and governance, there was a time when someone could chose which state best fit their expectations of competent & fair governance.
Americans are so divided that they will NEVER stand together against their true enemy, The Tyrannical ever growing Federal Government and the Corporations that keep them in POWER !!! Enjoy the Show .....
They control us through compliance. Stay compliant or you lose your job, you will lose everything. You will become a target and you will not know peace.
Our apathy is better described as a paralysis induced by the fear of getting shot by the government or getting fired and falling behind on bills until we slip into an inescapable hole of poverty.
“A desire to be housed and fed” this is exactly what they want. A docile society that is enslaved by the system. Too exhausted to yell, too poor to stop working, too sick to fight.
To think, we could have had anything and we chose this as our existence. The whole thing needs to burn.
Corporations bought each & every politician in both parties, monopoly laws haven't been enforced in decades, capitalism hasn't been practiced in the United States in decades also. We are living in a corporate run system of government. If "We The People" desire to be heard, then everyone would have to agree to stop going to work for a week or two, that would get the attention of our true masters, The Corporations ..... Sadly thousands of our fellow citizens would be negatively impacted. Bad Situation ...
Not to mention that if no one is working that means no one is restocking the grocery shelves. No one is driving trucks to transport food. Kids are not being educated. Hospitals aren't able to take care of the sick and injured. On and on...
It tells me that their jobs are bullshit. Remember when we started calling everyone whose job actually did something "essential workers"?
Nevermind that most of us pieced together that the "essential workers" are the ones that get treated the *worst* usually. It went to show that when everyone who had an email job stopped working for a few months next to nothing changed, but when us plebs stopped working everything ground to a halt and a crisis loomed within a week.
I worked in a sporting goods store when my state shut down. Closed the store for a few days, and the magically the owners got an exemption and the store partially reopened.
Which department? Shoes? Camping supplies? Nope.
Guns. Ammo. Me selling “essential” AR-15s to panic-buying, maskless people in the middle of a pandemic.
About that time I realized the only essential part of the equation was dolla-dolla-bills, yo!
USAmericans seemed to have been sociologically primed to not only be especially ignorant concerning real survival, but also incredibly willing to take out their repressed rage and fear on others.
If I didn't know any better I would think it was a deliberate psyop to make sure the land is cleared of survivor clans after the apocalypse so the corpocrats can take over.
Truck driver. Essential worker. No extra pay, no real change from the norm outside of the possibility of getting covid from various sources including other stupider drivers. But essential!
LA was a ghost town. Then you get to the dock and there is 100 people. Crazy. Even crazier to me than LA was DC being empty. I mean LA... its happened. DC? Never.
Exactly. In what world, in what system of economic organization can people whose jobs are actually useful to society at large just stop working to "recover" and "process"? It's an absurd notion.
I mean if the pandemic is anything to go by, it takes a lot of people to keep the lights on in society, but not really most people. You're naming essential workers but theres legions of accountants, graphic designers, sales reps, office clerks, etc, that could sit at home and basically nothing would happen for months if we ignore the economy.
People can't seem to wrap their heads around how complex ( and therefore energy INTENSIVE!) our society is.
Nurses need to go to work to care for sick and injured. Nurse needs supplies at work. So the people making supplies need to also work. And the supply factory needs machines to make the supplies so the machine makers need to work. You could go absolutely insane trying to come up with the thousands of other people who have to do their job so a nurse can have a bag of saline.
For the loss of the chlorine gas, the ore refinery was lost.
For the loss of the refinery, the iridium was lost.
For the loss of the iridium, the catalyzer tank was lost.
For the loss of the catalyzer, the acetic acid was lost.
For the loss of the acetic acid, the vinyl acetate was lost.
For the loss of the vinyl acetate, the EVA was lost.
For the loss of the EVA, the IV bag was lost.
Do you think it’s ever been another way?
It’s boggling how people think there’s no sacrifice involved. That you can just make a sign and be done with it.
I'm surprised that people are interpreting this take as a serious proposal, it's more like a lament that things are so, that it's jarring to carry out work while going through the motions. I know I felt this during the LA fires, watching my old stomping grounds burn.
For me personally, it’s not that I interpret this as a serious post, it’s just mildly infuriates me because like, no shit? Thanks for these words of wisdom, now everything’s fixed! Oh it’s not that simple?
Words are cheap and it annoys me that the tone implies we don’t know or just aren’t trying anything. These virtuous posts replacing actually taking action. What is the poster doing differently than all of us plebs?
Right? It's truly baffling , they expect us to just drop everything and do what exactly? There's no organization! Just a bunch of pockets of angry people
Large number of posters like this with no post history. You have to be aware when there are comments like this that seen to undermine active resistance, they are meant to do exactly that.
You are not weak, you are not alone. But understand there are forces arrayed against you. Find the small ways you can help. Or the big ones.
Spot on. The comments are wild. Who are these people willing to disparage the people doing something? Why are they so willing to give away our hard-fought rights to kings & queens & fascists & billionaires?
The most sympathetic interpretation I can think of is they are suffering from defeatism.
COLLECTIVE👏 ACTION👏 JOIN👏 YOUR👏 UNION👏 PEOPLE👏
I live in Los Angeles. During the protest I'd go after work... Days when I was scheduled late in the evening I'd go to the protest during the day... Almost everyone knew who was there had a job and did what I was doing.
You'd think it would burn you out... It actually revitalized me both in body and spirit. Something about being with a group of others fighting for what you all believe in gives you energy and hope.
I feel this. I went to an ICE protest on Tuesday and a community organization response meeting yesterday in my community. I felt a lot better after both and feeling like the community isn’t going anywhere or going to be torn apart by fascism. I had to work all week and went after work both days. I’m doing some volunteer work to check in with homeless people tomorrow, as the weather is supposed to be very hostile and we want to give them options to get into a if they choose to.
Yes you are made precarious and subjugated in this class society, it shapes the way you value yourself and others and makes your fearful reluctance to risk an alternative seem like common sense.
I wouldn't say it's common sense. It's a prisoners dilemma. Outcomes are worse for my cowardice, for me as well, but not today. I've imagined alternatives and would be willing. But I think things have to get worse before a real resistance ca succeed, for the exact reason that my cowardice seems reasonable.

Bottom line for a week or two and watch the world change.
I witnessed it with a group of 50 working to rule. We showed up every day, but acted in solidarity.
For me it’s seeing the slow, inevitable collapse of our government, institutions, and natural habitat while trying to minimize risk. We’re not at full collapse everywhere yet, but looking into the crystal ball it doesn’t look promising
Eh… every single person in this thread is spending money they don’t have on shit they don’t need. If you’re really interested in making a difference, that is where you start… or stop so to speak.
Take a look at Minneapolis today though…biggest strike and mobilization of a city ever in protest of what is happening. We should all aspire to THAT level of care in our communities.
So the biggest strike this decade was the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike at 160k. We just need all entertainment production to shut down I guess. We seem to get more pissed off about that than losing our democracy. Go figure.
I wonder what happened in the late 40s that could have possibly stopped those strike waves from continuing into the 50s and beyond. [The world will never know](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taft%E2%80%93Hartley_Act).
I work in a power plant, if i stop working collapse happens *really* quick in today's world. Ditto for those working in sanitation, public works and a host of other public and private companies. As far as my view of the goverment is concerned my taxes still get taken out of each paycheck, and I keep the rest of my pay.
I disagree. Even in war, the show must go on. People are adaptable and change to the new normal. People still need to eat. We have to add on caring for each other more than before 100%.
But we must adapt, improvise and overcome if we have a chance to defeat the fascists. And that means taking care of the day to day SHIT in the meantime.
this is the correct answer. In Kyiv, I was in lines for raves dancing to the sound of air raid sirens going off overhead with my buddies. In Yemen, friends still hang out smoking shisha in a café while guns shoot outside. In Afghanistan, kids must walk through minefields to go to school. Life goes on, people still have basic needs, and it is very easy to become numb to whats happening around you. We still send our children to school despite constant school shootings, while one day a Yemeni colleague came running up to me with tears in her eyes apologizing for a school shooting in the US and saying "it must be so scary to have kids there! we never have shootings involving kids!" while we looked out at a massive IDP camp filled with hungry people. The news only shows the most dramatic images, so you see the one apartment building that got bombed last night in Kharkiv, but you don't see the other 1,000,000 homes which were untouched where people had to go out walking their dog, mop the floors, and go grocery shopping.
Remember when companies shut down during covid? And the workd used it as an excuse to price gouge us from all directions? Can we really afford for that to happen again? Not thay i disagree with you...just something to keep in mind
it’s just so so funny how in the face of violent fascism, our opposition party is voting for more funding and our activist class, like this person, are still doing Bodies and Spaces therapy talk
Look at history. This is exactly how it goes in every slide into authoritarianism. People still have bills to pay. They still worry about retirement. They have to feed their kids and get a degree. They have people they love and who depend on them so they aren't willing to risk it all for the slim chance of making a difference. There are all kinds of things I could do...if I didn't have people who love and depend on me.
I don't have anything to lose, but I'm not going down for the rest of you who do. You can't alienate people with nothing to lose and expect them to do something for you. Incels, childfree women, etc. None of us are doing anything for normies. Fuck off.
Well, a huge percentage were conscripted and forced to fight and leave their family behind to tend the farm (aka their entire source of income) entirely by themselves. I have an ancestor who deserted and came home to help his pregnant wife and just hid out in the woods with some other deserters till it was over. He might have also participated in some mayhem and feud starting while he was at it.
My job helps people in my community. My tax dollars help fund one of the biggest welfare states in the world. Just because I'm not waving a sign around doesn't mean I'm not helping.
Everyone should stop working to process and care? The world still needs to run. You still need lights on in your home and food on your table. Am I the only one here who doesn’t understand this mentality? I do think it’s weird the world continues on as if everything’s normal but that’s another thing
For real. It’s moronic. We live in a society. Society needs people to function, and has essential and non essential services. This is pure anarchist mentality and makes no practical or logical sense. Good grief.
Real. Can’t even comprehend mutual aid or anything outside of their atomized unit. If this country had any kind of care or cohesive movement for one another it would affect massive change. are they going to kill everyone if 150 million people decided not to go to work? people in other places laid down their lives with even less. I don’t get this at all.
We’ve been fed a lie that self-isolating is peace, while living in a world where modern work isn’t sufficiently purposeful, but simply a means to create wealth for someone else while being micro managed with cool high tech means to the point of burnout.
It’s okay to take time to be hopeless occasionally, but it’s not true at all that everyone is going about as if things are normal. I don’t know if these efforts will be enough to stop the progression of fascism, but people are trying and some are already dying for it.
How exactly are we suppose to care about each other if we are providing the goods and services the economy provides? If I, say, break my leg, I'm going to hope there are folks at the hospital willing to help me out instead of whatever this vague "caring for each other" this post suggests.
u/Monsur_Ausuhnom how tf you expect people to “stay home and care for each other” when our lives largely rely on steady income? We aren’t all that level of wealthy bud.
What did you think would happen? People need money to pay the rent and buy food to eat. Not going to work, ie losing your job, is a disaster, and about the third most stressful thing that can happen to you after a death in the family and divorce.
His complaint was everyone was still going to work. Mutual aid and solidarity are substitutes for that, they're something built on top of it. I can give you the money for your rent, but only because I have a job to earn that money.
Humans are similar to herds, flocks and schools of prey animals, birds and fish. They run in great groups to confuse the predators, never confronting them and hoping they're not the ones eaten.
I dont think thats what this is. People stick to what they know in the face of uncertainty in order not to drown in chaos. Thats not "at all costs": it is in spite of the costs.
I work in a mexican restaurant with immigrants from south america. Everyday is a waiting game. It sucks and it is so dystopian to be serving margaritas to the people chaining my kids up.
No I meant more like
If suddenly the world went to apocalypse mode
They'd still be calling looking for bills to collect lol (bill collectors)
But sure down vote me for no reason yall
If I don't go to work, and the internet goes down, it doesn't come back on. Sure, I'm replaceable like everyone else, but it would be pretty fucking inconvenient for my community for a few weeks.
We used to have state mental hospitals for fragile people who needed to step away from society for awhile to regroup. Often after a brief respite, they were able to return to their previous life and shoulder their burdens again.
I think many of the problems we're seeing today, such as mass shootings, come because this isn't an option anymore. People can't just have a "nervous breakdown" and go away for a little while. They have to do something drastic and heinous that usually involved hurting other people in order to get the break they need.
I mean, nothing gets done without working. Nobody is gonna give you their food or house. At what point in history do people get to sit around and process trauma or grieve while getting things given to them?
people are lucky if they have a good community because ... I dunno if many folks really have one.. many people have struggled by themselves to survive over the generations. one may not typically take community membership for granted... or , community may be the workplace... which is not great for those who are being coerced by their employers.
I live in a rural area so I'm well aware of what my boyfriend jokingly calls "the old farmer network." The thing is, to be included for long, you have to be willing to give as good as you get. Even our 89-year-old neighbor to whom we lend a hand will try to repay our kindness by sending us home with baked goods and such. You are expected to contribute to the extent that you are able, and this is probably not going to sit well with progressive types who expect to be on the receiving end of other people's kindness.
You can get involved in your community tomorrow if you choose. You don't even need to do much. Go to your local convenience store, and talk to people. Do it often and after a while you'll see the same faces and get to know others. It's only 5 minutes of your time every other day. Or volunteer your time for a cause you like. Or have a hobby (I always suggest rock climbing but there are many hobbies that involve other people you could do). Even if it is once a month, that is once a month you connect with other people. The most important thing though, is talking to others. Opening conversation, however small, results in a connection. Finally, get to know your neighbors. I know every person in the building we live in. I know many of the people in the neighboring buildings too. I walk instead of drive when possible and talk to people I see.
Because there’s no way for us to stop. None of us listened when the boomers like Dave Ramsey told us to get out of debt and save money. We all have to keep working to afford these bullshit grocery prices. Nobody, including myself, has a choice.
We keep working, yeah. Keep waiting on the next incremental raise and speculate how many dozens of dollars our paycheck will increase this year. Keep trying to buy good eggs for $6 instead of $8. Keep wondering what new show is the best one to get into and gossip to friends about. Keep scrolling on the smiley shopping site for a new kind of face cream to try that is hopefully FSA approved so we don't waste that money. Keep politely trying to not fight with family over politics. Keep vacuuming our car floor mats. Keep downloading a podcast to keep us company at the gym all by ourselves or on the drive to the job with the 2% raise.
I don't like it either and it hurts to simultaneously feel useless and angry and numb.
Most don't have a choice. Many can't afford to miss work--a day, a week, a month--or they will suffer financially.
And even if one has some financial buffer... we're all just a few medical bills or serious emergencies away from financial ruin.
Read ,they thought they were free,
It's by a woman who lived through the 3rd Reich.
Normalcy remained in daily life while everything else was eroded away beneath their feet until it was too late.
The alternative is death. I get the message, but not working isnt an option.
We are utterly trapped in this system. There is no escape beyond death or the collapse of the system itself, and even then it'll still be shitty because we still have to survive. Its fucked.
It's an extremely privileged view that everyone can just stop and rest a while. Most people do not have that luxury, even the ones who financially can do it, many people have necessary jobs that if they didn't do them, people would DIE. Only someone who has a nonsense job that pushes paper and emails around is someone who can just stop working without consequence. People who drive trucks, stock food, make medicine, doctors and nurses, EMS and countless other jobs are necessary to survival for everyone.
You are right, don't mind random downvotes. Our founding fathers led a rebellion because they were all wealthy. The average person cannot miss a payment deadline.
i made the choice to not have kids or drive so I’m fortunate I can check out a little. I’m trying to find as few hours of work as possible and a cheaper place. I’m done working to pay gestapo ice and shit. I wish other people with the ability to would be willing to downgrade would do the same but nah. Americans are uniquely terrible
Americans are not uniquely terrible. Americans by and large are in survival mode. Most consumption in the US is by the upper and upper middle class incomes (ie, not the majority). If you think Americans are somehow unique in their desire to have something and save something, you haven't lived anywhere else. Americans are STUCK in the American system and have no recourse to escape it, so they are doing the best they can to provide for themselves and their families. For most people, that means working to pay rent, pay student loans, buy something nice for their kids.
I've kept my expenses low during my working life both so that I can wrest back some agency and in case automation upended white collar work. Also not having kids (for many reasons). Now I'm dealing with a mobility issue so I'm glad I have the ability to try to heal on my own terms but realize it's not something everyone could do. I've been mulling writing a book about finances & collapse / systems thinking because those tend to be separate worlds - would love to share ideas about how folks can increase their optionality if there's interest. One nagging issue is it really depends on how professions get shaken up by technology and whether that cuts off the labor to wealth ladder.
As someone who goes to school in Minneapolis (currently online though because of everything)...yeah it's a bit hard to focus on what my professor is saying when I'm getting notifications that ICE is a few blocks down or that ICE is in my friends' neighborhood conducting a raid. Especially being one of the only POC in my classes—it feels like I'm losing my mind. I understand this post in that way.
But also life does not feel normal right now. I haven't left the house in days because it's unsafe. Abandoned cars on the highways. Checking the license plate of every car that passes by. Passport in hand at all times. So at the same time, this is the least routine my life has had.
I've been a part of the collapse community for over a year now, so I knew they were coming for my state next. I just never predicted this scale of terrorization.
It feels like a damned zombie apocalypse, only the braindead monsters are turning around & trying to justify all the brain eating. There need to be new words to describe the feeling as your neighbor takes off the mask to reveal nothing.
That's exactly why they took away food stamps, abducted workers, and drove up costs. So that you are too panicked about surviving and too desperate for working too in despair, to have the time to overthrow them.
Remember. Anne Frank & all those hiding with her, from the Nazi occupation in Amsterdam. They were betrayed by neighbors who were “good friends” “good Dutch”.
Come the downfall. You can rely on no one. If lucky then only close family.
But having said that. Maybe not even family. Look at how many were abandoned & cut from their families because they would not have an injection.
We are fortunate if we have people we can rely on, no matter how hard life gets.
A very belated welcome to capitalist realism friends. A grey, empty landscape where we reluctantly drag our bodies out of bed to go to our pointless, dead end jobs just to keep the machine going for another day. Whatever future was promised by the advances of the 20th century have been foreclosed. Our collective prosperity and futures have been cancelled by a rapacious neo-liberalism let loose to colonise the world.
More like by unhappy accident.
Imperial boomerangs happen not because the state usually foresees a need to constantly crack down on people, but because they realize that the apparatus they need to crack down on dissent already exists.
There is something antithetical to this social relation and its been the thing youve been instructed not to read or understand, indeed what youve been instructed to hate without confirmation, for over a century. It represents true democracy and the potential for human flourishing. Its history provides successes and failures, inspiration and warning. Its been attempted everywhere because the working class is everywhere. Its been put down because our enemies are here.
"Our demands most moderate are: we only want the Earth"
-James Connolly
I think the hippies had the right idea in some ways.
Find a group of like minded people, buy a property together that has enough space for everyone, grow your own food (it will be a full time job for some of your group, or part time when shared among all). Run a hand crafted business together, it can be a part time job income thing. Communal meals to reduce food waste, and share the burden of cooking. Those who want to work elsewhere can, they could contribute monetarily rather than physically.
Have I been gazing day-dreamily at a property that has an 8 bedroom house, 2 3br houses, and a one room cottage? ... Maybe.
I saw one the other day that has a 14 br "luxury hotel" that looks like a machinery shed from the outside.
If I work at a water treatment plant should I be recovering and processing with my community? Is that going to make the collapse of the american empire better?
Wild seeing these takes from people with bullshit jobs thinking everyone on this ride is just like them.
Ok cool, so I'm going to stop going to work, and when the bank asks why I've not paid my mortgage, I'll tell them I'm "recovering and processing, helping my community".
I'll let you guys know how I get on.
The cars on fire and theres no driver at the wheel.
Again the system is designed to keep moving despite whatever happens. Why does everyone want things to just break and stop because when it does...thats when real change happens.
Right now you can't exit the system without exposing yourself to significant backlash from said system and the average populace who is unaware collapse is underway.
Best you can do as a westerner is develop skills, resilliency and community outside of work hours which limits a lot of what you can do.
Still, it is worth the investment of time and energy.
Recovering from what????
Things haven’t changed for the vast majority of people. The tragedy of this all is that a very small subsection of the American population is taking the brunt of the suffering for us all.

Submission Statement,
Related to collapse because it appears that the normalization of continued conformity even to the point of irrationality, to be obedient at all costs will continue to be done, even if it will unravel on all levels. Money will be hoarded and not used to alleviate the issue. It is rapidly accelerating and getting worse.

There are not enough cops to kick everyone out. And eventually i hope and wish that people will not stand for these shenanigans and stand up for your neighbor. Black white brown green or purple. We are america.
I'm a middle school teacher. I have a lot of immigrant students. Several have expressed their fears to me. I continue to go to work everyday so they can see that I'm not scared.
That’s the system doing what’s it’s designed to do. Most people already can’t afford basic things and most people’s healthcare is tethered to their job. To keep us working.
I'd argue that the government is run amok *because* the anarchocapitalist people crunching machine has been perfected to the point where people have no choice but to work.
