Old washing machine tried to catch fire... what brands would you recommend?

I have had a look online (Curry's, AO etc), but I can't seem to find much in the way of objective reviews. What products are actually worth it? I can see from previous posts that Miele is highly regarded, but the smallest one is £800 and massively out of our budget. Our current, broken one is an Indesit that we bought second-hand two years ago, and it recently attempted to set itself on fire when the lock mechanism and the wires going into it started smouldering. Very keen to avoid another smoky adventure, but not sure what is decent value for money. We'd probably buy refurbished or second hand which does shave a lot off the price, and would settle around half the cost, hopefully about £200. Marketplace seems to be full of £100-180 washing machines, mostly Zanussi, LG and Hotpoint, but without knowing how long one would last, it's a bit of a gamble. Any recommendations and advice welcome!

I’ve had a Beko washing machine for 8 years. It’s survived 2 babies including a year of reusable nappies. It runs at least 5 times a week and has for most of that time. Still no issues. I’ve also got a beko heat pump tumble drier that’s 6 years old and still going strong. Both were pretty cheap. I would say the only downside is that they’re a bit noisy.

I’m a firm believer in “buy a Beko, immediately bin it and buy another when it gives trouble” for washing machines and dishwashers. I suspect though that the Chinese brands like Haier and Hisense are now actually fine. I’ve got a fancy Bosch dryer and dishwasher and while they do work, they’re unnecessarily…finicky…and the cost new is hard to justify.

Haier are probably the very best without spending an absolute ton of money. They wash so well, are well built, and the direct motion motors are almost silent even when on a full speed spin

Ours is a Logik (curry’s own brand) 9kg A-Rated washer. Only issue we’ve had with it in the 2 years since purchase was beginning of this month when the waste pipe outside had frozen which causes water to back up and flood the utility room (old owners drilled a hole in the wall for a I think 5cm wide pvc pipe and then it’s connected to other sections of the same piping going down then across under the doorstep to the drain where the drainpipe empties)

Logik washing machines are made by Vestel. Exact same machines as you’ll get mast by other own brands like Bush at Argos, Electra at AO etc. but also they make brand name items too - Sharp’s washing machines are the very same too for example.

Got a Beko for about £300 5 years ago. Washes nicely and not showing any signs of wearing out yet.

yup so underrated as a brand. I have the full house washer,dryer,and 5 years later dishwasher. worth getting 10kg drums for washing double duvet. Have been impressed with the reliability which is why i got the dishwasher too. The way i wash is fill less than 50% of drum, and 800 rpm, cos the amount of water spun out difference to 1400 rpm isnt worth aging the machine for. Give it a calgon tablet once every 20 washes, and it'll last for years. I do double duvets in mine every season... and then throw it in the heat pump tumble dryer... no heating element thus no fire, it gets to 30c on delicate care when drying so perfectly safe.

Bought a Hoover model about 3 years ago &, after a recent violent 1400rpm spin cycle, noticed a small mound of grey dust next to it. A quick Google told my the concrete counterweight inside is rubbing, shedding, & thus de-balancing, so naturally that was the end if its use... the thought of it disintegrating mid-spin was not on my 2026 bingo card tyvm. Thankfully my son was moving away soon after & needed to empty his flat, so I requisitioned his 2yo Hotpoint! So... no to Hoover. I've had an Indesit which lasted a fair few years, & a Hotpoint before that did similar service, but nothing lasts forever... same old scene ;)

bosch is good, my fridge, cooker and washing machine lasted 10+ years washing machine bit the dust at 10 years but i replaced it with a non combo as the combos are meant to be prone to dying in general

I do think it’s worth spending more when you can for a quality washing machine. We bought a Bosch about 13 years that’s still going strong. Was around £350 at the time. Picked it because it was a model with a drum that can be disassembled for repairs/fishing out bra wires etc.

Current machine and previous both Samsung EcoBubble. First one went way past it's 5 yr warranty and when it failed, I replaced the motor brushes to keep it going for another year or so before it ate itself (went on the wobbleand shredded the seals). Current one has been here a couple of years and been more than happy - although the Wi-fi app has NEVER worked properly and we simply gave up on it.

We got a Samsung a couple of weeks ago. One of the attractions was the warranty which is now 20 years on the motor and 5 years on the machine. I've found the app quite useful as Alexa tells us when the machine is finished (it's in a utility room). It also tells the dryer about the load. However the dryer still shows a long duration (eg. 3 hours) before coming down to 1-2 hours, so I guess it's limited to just setting the best programme.

I’ve got a Haier smart one, it’s great and we got it reasonably priced. The best thing about it is the Keep Fresh feature, very handy for when you forget about the washing for hours after it’s finished.
