Has anyone ever forgotten their age?

Posted by HedgehogNo8361@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 356 comments

I was born early June, 1970. I've spent the last 6 months thinking I was 56 already. I don't know whether to laugh or cry lol

I just realized that you can tell basically every age in the ~5 year range and nobody will ever notice. Nobody starts counting when you tell them your birth date… atleast if your over 25-30 I guess

I turned 21 in September 2025 and i was so busy and stressed last months that I thought i was twenty. I’m also German and your a full grown adult able to do anything at twenty so it doesn’t matter but I realized I need to cut stress down lol

Sort of: my husband and I had an argument about how old we are, had to have Alexa figure it out. Pass the Geritol…

I do have to do the math every once in a while, I always make myself a year younger, like writing the earlier year on a check.
View on Reddit #76711055

chilicheesefritopie@reddit

Since the age of 25, more often than not I have accidentally aged myself a year older than I am. Oh well.
View on Reddit #76702549

IfICouldStay@reddit

Yes. Ever since about my late 30s I’ve had some struggle with it. It’s not that I don’t “remember” it’s more that I have to actually think about it. Like, I’ll see those ads that are: “dress/haircuts for your age” and my eyes go straight to the 30 range, and I have to consciously think, “nope! Not for you. Go to the 50 section”

Every time I'm asked, I have to think of my son's age (20 now) and add 30. I can remember his, but not my own, which is pretty good evidence that parenthood breaks your brain.

Sometimes I have to stop and think about it. I mean, it never takes longer than a second or two, but it's slightly longer than "instant." I suspect it's less about aging-related memory failures, and most about the fact that the *exact number* matters less at our age. The difference between 20 and 21 is enormous and super important. The difference between 48 and 49? Barely relevant in any imaginable context. No need to have it on instant recall.

I've been forgetting my age since I was in my 30s. I often have to count up from 1974 to the current year to be sure. My wife has been forgetting her age about as long, She'll periodically ask me how old she is, so I have to then remember how old I am and subtract 4 years for her age, then inevitably, "What's My Age Again" by Blink 182 gets into my head.

When I was 11, my dad told me that he “wasn’t ever 43 years old”. I was really confused because birthdays are so monumental when you’re a kid. Basically he said that he was 42, then turned 43 but sort of forgot about that and kept thinking he was 42. Then, on his next birthday someone asked him how old he was and he did the math and was like “wow - I missed being 43!! I went from 42 right to 44”. I thought that was completely insane until I got to my 40s. Now, I can see how that happened 😄

I did.🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️ When no one remembers your birthday for years and years it becomes irrelevant, it's just another day. When your life is about your kids you even forget about yourself as a person. A while ago I came to a horrible fact. Someone had asked for my date of birth. I then had a "wait a minute" moment of clarity. Thanks HRT. I got my phone out and tapped in 2025-1968. Holy shit! I'm 10 years older than I thought I was!!! I don't feel 57 and I don't think I look 57. I've been telling people that I'm 47. Same. I was 36, and thought I was 37. My 37 year old cousin corrected me when we were having a conversation, and I was like "are you sure?" She was right.

I do forget. That’s why I laughed it off when my mom made a big deal about me turning 50. On my 51st birthday. 😹

I have to do the math every time someone asks me. I stopped remembering sometime in my 30's.

No, I always remember. My wife is also GenX and never remembers though, so asks me how old she is all the time.

Turning 60 this year and keep thinking I'm going to turn 50.  Then reality sets in and my eyes fly open and my mouth gapes and then I lose consciousness from the horror of it all.  How'd I get so fu#king old????!!!

I was born 3 months before you. I deliberately start thinking of myself as my new age at the beginning of the year, so I have some time to adapt to it.

Yes! I have to constantly think (real quick) ok my wife is this, my cousin is this, my daughter is this, so yes! I’m 57. You would think at my last birthday it would be ingrained with the new age number, but not. After 2 months you start second guessing and analyzing everyone around you to come up with your own age. It’s interesting. 🤷🏻‍♂️
View on Reddit #76569752

I turned 35 twice. I completely skipped 34 because my brain just went from 33 to 35. I did it again for the first half of 43 and thought I was 44 already. I'm 49 now (if my math is correct), and assuming I will likely forget another year soon enough.
