Not true for some. Me and my teammate where close to needing a 34 so our fleet manager offered us a load going in knowing we'd do our 34 in it (just shut down) is covering a hotel suite room for 2 days, paying us layover and put it in writing where making double per mile on this load.
What you'd have to worry about are the people that don't know how to drive sliding into you. It is amazing the amount of liberties that some people will take when traveling through inclement weather.
It's still going to get colder than it has in a decade where this is going to hit and in places that aren't used to this kind of weather it most certainly ain't going to be aight. You guys are used to this kind of thing and know how to prepare for it, they're projecting Atlanta to get a half inch of ice accumulation or more and if 5% of the population there knows how to drive in those conditions and has the equipment to do it I'd be amazed. My company is shutting down the entire fleet by 8pm tomorrow and it's a terminable offense to drive until they give the all clear.
I looked after I said itād be alright. Minnesota is where Iām going to deliver the next load and when Iām done delivering it Iām going āhomeā to the place I spend 1 weekend a month. I should add 2 weeks a year. Make it like the army reserves but in reverse. Fail to be at work for 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks per year rather than doing military service for that same 2 weekend a month and 2 weeks per year. Glad Iām in my 40s and they donāt want me anyway or that could have been my life. Army reserves when Iām not driving truck, driving truck when Iām not doing the Army reserves.
Anyway, no snow in Minnesnowta while Iām home. Thereās snow but that pile up of snow from the last month has just been sitting there without additional snow for about a week and next week looks the same. Itās too cold to snow. Looking at -23 Friday night with a high of -8 mid afternoon. But for people in Illinois, Indiana, New York, New Jersey, etc out that way plus Kentucky and Virginia they are get blasted with snow while places south of that all the way down to central Texas and even Alexandria Louisiana are going to be contending with ice (freezing rain). And Iād argue that itāll be harder to drive in Louisiana than itāll be to drive in parts of Ohio when that storm comes through.
Comparing Minnesota to Louisiana isn't even a fair comparison. The south does not have the infrastructure yet alone the supplies to deal with this type of weather. The precipitation that falls will immediately ice over and stay frozen until the next temp is high enough to melt the ice and that's probably gonna be around Monday. This is a serious concern to anybody who plans to travel or live within the storm path.
Iām pretty sure I said the same thing and I got downvoted when you got upvoted. In the south they are usually used to December and February being 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit and at most one week of actual winter where there is ice. It might snow and stick to the ground one time for one day every eight years. I know. I used to live in Jackson Mississippi. We had a banana plant that would still be growing on Christmas.
But with that said, this year the coldest day forecasted is today in Minnesota. I about died last night walking from my truck to the Lyft and from the Lyft to my house. My mustache was covered in ice crystals. My eyes were freezing over. It was also too cold to actually snow at about -15 F and I had a drop/hook as my last load and the place I dropped the load in Northfield did not have an empty so I went further North to Arden Hills to find the trailer touching the trailer to its left. The yard truck driver did not want to move it because āwith the weather this cold the yard truck doesnāt like to disconnect.ā And they were right. It took him no time to move the trailer, took 3 times as long to unhook from the trailer.
As cold as it was thatās about 10 degrees warmer than itās supposed to be tonight. And the really crazy thing is that while Minnesota warms up in about a week to -5 low +11 high you could see central Louisiana dip to their coldest day of the year that was previously listed as 19 low 35 for the high. Now it says 1 degree warmer. And it will feel almost as cold as that crap I dealt with last night here (correction, the -25 happened last night, itās now -20 and the low tonight only -17 with a warm up to about -5 in the middle). Except without the literal icicles hanging from the mustache *because* there isnāt any snow. Itās all swamps. And itās also supposed to be raining which will probably turn into ice.
*laughs in LTL*
Only way I'll be home is if there are turnpike restrictions in Pennsylvania and since they haven't even announced tentative restrictions yet I'm not hopeful
Ltl means less than truckload, we generally stay more local. Over the road guys have more control over when they drive than ltl does. If I'm told to drive and refuse I'm more likely to lose my job. Keep in mind that's all broad generalization and not concrete truth, otr guys can and do get punished for refusing to do things.
As for restrictions, state DOT can limit or outright ban certain vehicles from operating on roads during inclement weather. No restrictions means LTL companies will want to move freight.
As a fuel hauler in Michigan I can say these local companies donāt care, even if there is no one else on the road who will even use this gas or fuel Iāll still be out there delivering to the poor speedway workers who like me has a company that doesnāt care.
Yeah that $1K to $3K extra they throwing out for these weekend loads isn't making yall O/O any profit.
It's gonna go straight to the tow truck whose gonna pull you out of the ditch š«£
The smartest of the folks down south will know to shut the fuck down and wait it out. You know the shit's coming. Park somewhere with food and heat and wait it out.
I'd say if you can, don't even be around the severe parts of the storm, it's going to cause power outages and infrastructure delays for a couple days probably.
The driver before the winter storm same company makes $758 on that load and for driving the storm they make $758 on that load but it takes 3 hours longer.
