What do you think is the most Blatantly Ignored road sign in our profession?
Speed limit is a given, so it doesn't count. My nominee is a 'no trucks' sign on the only road leading to a bunch of new warehouses. What are your nominees?

"All trucks left lane"

New trucker fresh out of training here. I have been telling about this to my non trucker friends and they just smile and nod like they have no idea what I'm talking about. I wondered if I was misinterpreting the sign or the etiquette or something. Me. Surrounded by other trucks, sees the sign, proceeds to the left lane. No other truck does it. 4 wheelers behind me honking and flashing their lights at me, then when I don't move they speed around me yelling at me and flipping me off.

Tutorele@reddit

So I ended up asking an engineer friend of mine who took courses related to roadway Construction in the lake about this and the reasoning. He said after a bit of research that the main reason you see the sign for trucks in the left lane is because of the shoulder. When that sign is up there's a chance that there's less reinforcement on the shoulder and that more weight can potentially damage it or worse. Obviously people ignore these signs all the time, but he said that that's to his understanding the main reason why such a sign would go up, if a shoulder at some point through the construction would be especially at risk. Other reasons could happen too, but at least from what he concluded from a bit of research in his field, that's the actual reason for it. So, ignore the idiots is my advice. You never know when the one day the weight of your truck triggers a slump in an incomplete chunk of road could happen and you're the one left holding the bill because of damage, or God forbid a rollover.
View on Reddit #76490756

Naborsx21@reddit

I heard t was to allow the asphalt to cure after they made a new roadway temporary or what have you. The increased weight of the trucks can fuck it up while it's still "settling' but this makes a lot more sense.
View on Reddit #76831130

NyteReflections@reddit

This is indeed the reason. I researched it after seeing the sign as a new driver too.
View on Reddit #76814317

SockFullOfNickels4u@reddit

Agreed. I usually see this in a construction zone where the shoulder is now the right lane, and the left lane is what was the right lane. See these a lot in the last year on I-57 in Sourhern IL
View on Reddit #76491010

Tht24v2ndgen@reddit

Don't forget i80 in IL where the 55 interchange is over by Joliet.
View on Reddit #76589980

Tromboneofsteel@reddit

Personally, I can feel when the shoulder is sketchy in these cases. Slightly higher rolling resistance, pulls slightly to the right and such. So it makes sense that'd be the main reason. The other time I've seen the sign is when there's very short on-ramps ahead.
View on Reddit #76575401

The-Shartist@reddit

I used to think it was mostly to prevent wear on the shoulder, but.... I have seen work zones in Indiana where 3 lanes were reduced to 2. Both of those 2 lanes were originally travel lanes. "Trucks Use Left Lane" signs posted. Why? I think they figured out that not all trucks move to the left. When trucks are cruising slowly in both lanes, it slows all traffic down. Speed control in the work zones thanks to truckers who can't read signs.
View on Reddit #76565832

Mamatiger85@reddit

I've often thought that it might have something to do with how trucks often end up running nose-to-tail in a construction zone and if we're all in the left lane it makes it easier and safer for traffic entering the highway to merge.
View on Reddit #76513900

FCMatt7@reddit

Definitely this.
View on Reddit #76560169

Tutorele@reddit

It would certainly make sense in some of those blind merges construction can create but seemingly not the main reason at least! Or at least probably not
View on Reddit #76515249

FCMatt7@reddit

It's definitely to get trucks away from the right lane so that local traffic can merge onto the highway with the reduced merge area. Sometimes the left lane might be wider too.
View on Reddit #76560144

Dr-Jiggles@reddit

That's makes a good bit of sense. I figured it might have had some reason to do with the shoulder, but I was never sure.

I was just about to say, what is it with our fellow truckers and not being able to respect lane controls. "No trucks left lane" everyone goes as left as they can "All trucks left lane" you won't see a truck out of the right lane for miles.
View on Reddit #76534719

Codexe-@reddit

Sometimes it seems arbitrary. But there's a couple sections in the southeast where it makes sense. The right lane is unfinished and if you drive a truck in it, you're constantly wobbling in and out of a huge divet in the road. Normal sized cars can fit in the lane just fine though.   It seems weird when there's no apparent reason for it. But in that section, every truck immediately gets in the left lane.

Did work in a neighborhood built on the edge of a ravine, on the top of a mountain. SHOCKINGLY a handful of houses built piers hanging over the edge slid one day (look up Draper, Utah house slide). Well it took months of trucks there every day dumping material to fill it back in with engineered material. I understand the inconvenience and all that to the neighbors across the street, but one day this lady came out and asked a driver to not let our engine fans run because they're too loud. This is after driving up a loooong, steep canyon road. In the summer. So, engine fans are not going to cooperate. Nor will they cooperate by not kicking on and off while idling waiting to dump. The driver got on the CB and said the lady said that. So I keyed up and encouraged everyone to engage their manual fan switches. Instead of turning on and off as needed, individually, we all ran our fans every time we were there 😂

Tell that to the people buying trillion dollar houses next to race tracks, then complaining that the cars are loud.
View on Reddit #76575597

RectumRavager69@reddit

They almost always mean you can't run unmuffled engine brakes which to be entirely fair is a dick move if you're next to a residential area. If they're muffled you can usually still run them and not get in trouble. If you're literally right next to houses like up in Pennsylvania where you have to drive down residential streets then yeah you should probably still turn them off even if they're muffled.

View on Reddit #76635730

ursisterstoy@reddit

Yep. I didn’t think of that. Years ago I was dumb and I got behind on a car payment and then I paid every month like I never missed a payment after that. While waiting for Friday to pay the overdue payment plus the current payment I was also out of gas. I couldn’t go anywhere. I spent the night in my car. I woke up to being hooked up the tow truck. They said that now that they hooked up it is considered repossessed but they cannot drive away if I stay in the car. So I told them I was going to stay in the car. Eventually I just let them take the car. That was long enough ago that I now have a different car and the payments are all on time. Haven’t yet had them try to tow my truck.

Lane restrictions, mostly because the majority of time they're legitimately just stupid. Other than the few extremely dumb trucks that will just sit next to you even if you have to get over for emergency vehicles, Major shoulder traffic or climbing lane ending. because they legitimately seem to believe if they get into the left lane they'll immediately explode or something. I mean, I'm not allowed in the left lane but the fucking car that's been sitting next to me for the last 10 miles is perfectly fine. Honestly, I ignore them all the time. Only once have I had a cop flash their lights at me to get back over up in like Chicago area. Of course, fuckin car wanted to slow down with me so they could keep me blocked in the left lane was really annoying I think we got down to like 30 mph. I mean, is it really too much to ask for just a few freebies. a year
View on Reddit #76508940

Dragex11@reddit

Understandable. I've only gotten flashed once on the east side of Nashville going West in that 4 lane stretch. I was annoyed, since I've never been bothered there before, but at least he didn't ticket me. I HAVE been pulled over in Georgia for being in the left lane (turtle racing motherfuckers were slowing down the middle and right lane, and I just happened to try and pass as I passed a bear), but he just gave me a warning so it worked out.

Slightly unrelated, but this reminds me of something that gave me a laugh. Sometime in 2019, all the rest stops along I-5 in Northern California were closed and posted with signs on the off ramps. Drivers were understandably fed up, and at one point someone plowed through the closure sign at the rest stop before Siskiyou, opening the way for other exhausted drivers to pull in as well.

Weight restriction, or no trucks sign. Cause like, most of the time it tells you when you're already on said road with nowhere else to go. Like, half a mile down and it's like "No trucks!" Great, where the f do you think I can go? Couldn't have told me at the intersection where I had options? I can't tell you the amount of these signs I ignored because of this reason when I was delivering ice in a class B truck.

My towns down town is like that in the winter. Most of the year you can drive a truck down the road (it’s a bad idea but you can) but in the winter we hang wreaths and lights across the road, decreasing the clearance height by quite a bit. We put up signs, alerting people, but they don’t always pay attention.

ursisterstoy@reddit

That was acknowledged in the OP but I find that it doesn’t matter the size of the vehicle, if they can speed, they do speed. And it’s not even close to looking like they can read or care. With all of those photo enforced speeding tickets people have if the signs are not lying the entire city of Chicago has enough points on their licenses for them to be permanently revoked. Same in Indianapolis. Same all across the entirety of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Arizona. I can’t comment on first hand experience in the other states but I presume that Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Montana, Vermont, Florida, Hawaii, and Alaska are exactly the same. If they assign points for speeding, if they enforce traffic laws by camera, and if they revoke licenses for people having too many points on them, there are maybe 10 people in the country with a valid license. Everyone else is speeding full time. Through town, through road construction, out in the middle of nowhere on some two lane US highway, on the freeway, whether the speed limit is 5 mph, 10 mph, 15 mph, 20 mph, 25 mph, 30 mph, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, or 255 something is speeding and usually most people who are able to speed are speeding. Even while passing the sign that says speeding is photo enforced. Even when they pass the sign that says speeding tickets are tripled (in NJ). Even while there are actively 3 people pulled over for speeding on the road where they are speeding *too.* Or they all slam on the brakes and merge into the same lane all at once. Or they see those props outside of Cleveland with one that looks like a police officer with a radar gun and they all slow down to like 42 in the 60 and when the prop doesn’t move it’s right back to 75 mph.

A lot of drivers seem to have abandoned their training (and some might argue morality) in exchange for money. I see too many drivers, new and veteran, that drive as though the rules don't apply to them. This combined with the overall lack of respect have turned the industry from what it was into something akin to a side show. We can all do better, ladies and gentlemen.
