A lot of what we’ve heard about lead in these are sensational and “old wives tales” shared by social media. The person who started this I believe got sued by the company as their method of testing was equivalent to someone going outside with a meat thermometer to unequivocally state an accurate temperature. A third party lab did testing on pre 2005 and even way into the late 70s and the leaching is minimal and are far below what’s allowed by the FDA. If it’s damaged (chipped) then it should be thrown out but that’s usually the case for any tableware as it’s never safe to potentially ingesting bits of ceramic.
100%. We all had way more lead exposure from the paint in our (and our grandparents') homes than a lifetime of eating off these dishes with metal utensils 3x a day would ever be.
So knowing that it contains lead are you busting out a steak knife and digging in on these beauties? I mean internet lady loses lawsuit to massive corporation doesn’t quite inspire me to dust off my old lead laden Cornelle plates. I’ll just use new ones that *don’t* contain lead.
My grandparents were also old when they died. Nevertheless paint contains lead and the coating and paint chip away with repeated long term use which is why Cornelle who manufactured them says their plates from pre 2005 should only be used for decorative purposes. Do with this info what you will, personally I sprung for some new plates.
This just made my day. I’ve had my plates for like 25 years, and am tired of them. But every time I think about buying new ones, I don’t because it’s a waste of money when there ‘isn’t anything wrong with the ones you have’. Now I have an excuse, lol
Same. My parents divorced when I was really young. I live at my dad's now after he passed away. Mom came over one day and said "these were my plates from years ago." I laughed. So yeah number 8. And I have a lot of them.
Same. I think my mom was thrilled to be able to get a new set, and I was more than happy to take them. And then I got my grandma's too! I can't really imagine using anything else.
One of the first times I ate dinner at my (future) in-law’s I was presented with an 8 plate and froze … I hadn’t had the pleasure of seeing them in years and it was strangely comforting, like part of me was going back home thousands of miles away in the early 1980s.
Mine are currently packed away but I still have them. And coincidentally found a matching bowl buried for years in the backyard (from before I moved in) that cleaned up in perfect shape and got added to my collection.
They're not indestructible but they're tough, and they stack in minimal space, which I love about them.
Absolutely. My wife grew up on thick stoneware (?) looking stuff. I understand thick plates have an aesthetic appeal, but I’m glad I successfully lobbied for (modern) correlle when we got our own stuff. It fits in cupboards and dishwashers so efficiently, behaves in the microwave (no heating of the plate), is durable, and is easy to replace (especially if your family lives near an outlet store).
7. I hated those dishes! My sister and I used to have to take turns doing the dishes, which of course we hated. We would accidentally on purpose drop dishes into the sink, those old fashioned cast iron and porcelain ones, so the dishes would break and our mom would take over. Then she bought the freaking Corning Ware stuff and it did not break, no matter how hard we tried! It was an ugly pattern too.
When I went to school for the cooking part of home-ec there were three kitchens you could be assigned to work in. They were the blue kitchen (#5), the yellow kitchen (#7) or the green kitchen (#8) based on the corelle plates that they had in each.
We still use a Corelle pattern Rosemarie. It's from the mid nineties. Full 12 place set including cups. Just learned this morning that the painted pattern contains 11,000 ppm of lead and cadmium. I'm 78, been using these dishes every day over 20 years.
They hold up well! Probably about 40 years of daily service and still looks the same. I had no idea these were so popular. I like the reasonable weight.
I’m not poor now but, ideologically I like to buy new as a last resort. Enough stuff is made today to last us decades if we suddenly stopped producing all but the absolute necessity.
Funny enough, my mom told us growing up they were unbreakable. Cut to university years later, wasted some random night, i was saying how they were unbreakable. We got in a circle in the kitchen while i tossed the plate and it exploded into a hundred bits.
When Pyrex does break, though, those shards are nasty. I had a Pyrex casserole break in the drawer once. A year or two later, when I was moving out, I wiped out the empty drawer with a cloth and discovered that one shard had gotten lodged in the corner and I sliced my hand open.
I mean any amount would be “more” and we’ve already established that they have some pint of lead. So yeah, more. Would you rather increase your lead exposure or decrease/not increase? New dishes are not cost prohibitive.
#7 will survive nuclear war I swear. I can still remember the sound they made when you dropped them on the floor and they’d bounce and spin but never break.
I grew up with 7. I started a new job two years ago and the plate one of the guys keeps in the break room so s 7. I took a picture and sent it to my wife who grew up using the same plates.

If anyone is still using these (I keep #8 just for nostalgia, not use) they were recalled due to lead. Please do not still use them. I forget the site where I learned this, but I'm sure it's an easy Google search.

8 at grandmas, these beauties at home. My parents still use them daily.
Pussies. I mean 91 and 89 isn’t “super long.” who knows they may have made it to 93 and 101 had they avoided the lead contamination. To think of all they missed!
My parents still have and use their complete set of mixing bowls with #8.
They've tried to replace them many times, but always dig those out when the others break.
We had one that was produced a little later than these with cats on it. My mother does not like cats, no idea why she chose it. My grandparents had 4 and 7 though!
5 and 7 and the one that's not pictured that was pink and blue. My mom redid everything in pink and blue around 1992. You know, the country geese theme.
We had that, too! Kitchen border, the containers that held sugar/flour/whatever, painted wooden geese with bows. After my dad passed away in '91, my mum and grandma hung beige-y colored wall paper with blue and pink designs similar to the Corning Ware patterns. That was also in '92.
We moved in '95, and the kitchen looked almost identical.

Huge regret not asking for 7 when my Gramma passed away. I'm pretty sure my aunt sold them at her antique shop, or they're buried in her house, never to be found again.
Grew up with 5 (Snowflake Blue), and am still using them today! I’ve acquired some 6 (Woodland Brown), 7 (Butterfly Gold), and 8 (Spring Blossom) over the years as well.
They have lasted longer than any dishes we have purchased from the 21st century. I wish things were still made this well.
We just got rid of really heavy blue Pfalzgraff. My husband bought it before we were married but it’s so damned heavy, when I put something on the plates or used the bowls, my arthritic hands couldn’t hold them with one hand. (Seriously)
My body feels a lot older than I am.
We had random one-off plates of 5, 7, and 10, but the main pattern was none of these. We were a Wildflowers household.

An aunt on mom's side had 8, and an aunt on dad's side had 7. My dad had very "modern" octagonal black dishes after mom and moved out. Mom and I used paper plates except for holidays, when the good china came out. When I moved out on my own, I found a set of 8 at a thrift store and bought it for $3, including the drain rack it was displayed in.

Farm Fresh is not on here, but my husband grew up with it, inherited it when he moved out on his own (in his mid 20s), and (in our 40s) it has served as our dinnerware for the last 10 years and going strong. We are actually picking up some additional pieces someone is selling on FB marketplace tomorrow.

We had 2 sets growing up (milk and meat), but it’s been years since I’ve had dinner at my childhood home on something other than a paper plate.
This is my pattern. The birds match my kitchen cabinets (I picked it out before I moved into a house with blue cabinets).

Omg, I've searched everywhere for a fellow 2! I have a theory that plate patterns might mean be related to trade regions? I'm from the southern hemishpere
8, which then became our camping gear when my parents got this wild-coloured, wide-bordered, stained-glass-like, red-orange-blue, huge-cereal-bowl set that quickly became my favourite set of all time.
My grandmother still has most of the set for 5, several of 6, and one or two of 7. Mom had the mixing bowls for 8 when I was a kid. I've seen 2 and 9 before, and used them, but have no idea where or who had them.

My mom bought a set of dishes with a cherry red/bright yellow/royal blue/kelly green pattern at our local Winn-Dixie. Before that we had some kind of 1970s set that was avocado green with brown accents.
My grandma had the entire set of 8 including the Pyrex stuff in the same pattern. Her fridge and stove were the avocado color too. I have a coffee mug, tea cup, and saucer as mementos. They aren't from her actual set, but the memory is what counts.
Number 7 and I hate it. Plenty of childhood meals served on those plates, and as a reformed picky eater, if I didn't finish my food, which COULD NOT TOUCH BTW, my father would scrape it all in the center and tell me to stay there until it was gone. I can still hear forks scraping on the plate. The worst was when my mom would make shouyu chicken and white rice, knowing I hated anything on my rice, and would take the soy sauce based pan gravy and smother my rice in it. I wouldn't eat it, so my rice, chicken, and corn would get pushed to the center of my plate and mixed up by my dad and then I'd get yelled at to sit there until I finished it or until it was bedtime. Yep. Fun times.
I had a bunch of these but a single salad plate from #10 has moved with me over 14 times since I was 15yr. I bought 8 more off of Etsy a couple of years back and we use them every day.
I think number 7 was the only pattern I ever saw growing up. Parents had some, grandma had some, friends’ parents had some…everyone I knew seemed to have that damn pattern. And I hated Corelle for decades because of it.
Welp. I now have the modern plain white “winter frost” Corelle. Switched to it last year and am never looking back. I just got so sick and tired of heavy stoneware dishes that chip in the dishwasher and are dangerously hot in the microwave. So much easier handling lightweight Corelle. I finally get the appeal.

#6. Mom still has, and uses, it daily. I have recently acquired some large plates of #7... I know there is a resurgence of the popularity of these dishes, Target is selling dupes or second gen replicas of these in a set, tempted to buy.
#4 & #7. #4 was the ovenware. #7 are the same plates everyone else on this thread ate on. Parents still have the ovenware and still use them. They heat perfectly.
9 for my entire life. They were my grandma's dishes. My parent took them to college. Then I was given them for college. I feel I ought to give them to my child when they go to college, who has also used them them their entire life, yet I am really emotionally attached to the things
Though they are a bit weird in that I have replaced every single bowl at least once, the plates have been supplemented as well, and all of the mugs are long gone.
Parents have 8 and 6 still, grandparents had 5 and 9. I live in grandparents’ house and they are packed away (I have plain white Corelle). I hung one of each on the kitchen wall (along with another plate I grew up with).

Not represented here (tan with white wheat on them or something), but I still remain a true fan, just with the plain white ones. They are light-weight, dishwasher safe, durable, and cheap. As my arthritis gets worse, they are really the best choice, I never have issues handling them, and they are plain and simple.
10, and I have my grandmother's set of #7 in the closet for when we have large crowds (used them as xmas dishes for a while, too because the green and white looked festive on a red tablecloth!)
We had #7 on some Corningware, but we didn't have Corelle plates, until I moved out on my own. I had a clearance off white transition ware with no patterns and my mom and grandparents got plain white.
I currently buy more odds and ends of whatever Corelle patterns I find at the thrift store.
