ULPT request: sneaking booze onto the cruise ship
Posted by summerer6911@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 181 comments
Can anyone who has sailed Royal Caribbean in the last year tell me what security is like before boarding? Are there body scanners like at the airport or is it metal detectors? Do they really take out your liquids and shake them? To be clear, I'm not trying to do anything dangerous, but maybe I want to strap some plastic bags of liquor to my body or refill my wine bottles with tequila.
CrazyMinute69@reddit
By the drink package, you get 15 drinks a person a day. It's worth it.
Used_Evidence_3016@reddit
Drink packages for a week long cruise at $150 per day x’s 2 people is ridiculous.
CrazyMinute69@reddit
It's not a hundred and fifty bucks a day.We went on a six day cruise and I think the drink packages were around a $100 per person per cabin. But you didn't have to upgrade every cabin. We went with several family members and had 3 cabins. And only one of the cabins got the drink package.
Green_Yesterday3054@reddit
15 drinks per day…every day? Yikes
Garfield_and_Simon@reddit
Cruise ships definitely don’t serve proper pours so it’s more like 9ish
Cute_Chemical_7714@reddit
Maybe try going to an AA meeting, sounds like you're in trouble and I mean this in the kindest way possible.
nomoreimfull@reddit
Cut off a leg. Make a prophetic leg that doubles as a flask. Get a wheelchair ada ride through inspection. Be sad about your missing leg. Drink yourself to sleep.
gaptoothgoth@reddit
Now that’s what I call having a “leg up in the situation”
caampr@reddit
That went 0 to 100 very quickly
megabollockchops@reddit
This is the way

Proctor20@reddit
Not a typo.
MacintoshEddie@reddit
A leg that can see the future would be really useful in smuggling liquor.

Proctor20@reddit
What’s a prophetic leg? A leg that tell the future?
cstato@reddit
Can you ask your leg if the girl my son is currently seeing is ‘the one’?
Spiritual_Group7451@reddit
Twin? Is that you?
Peacer13@reddit
To be extra unethical, they should be cutting off their friends leg
Johnny_english53@reddit
Wow! A leg that has visions!
I love it!!
Shamino79@reddit
Have a wheelchair trailer with a “auxiliary “battery””.
MakeWar90@reddit
This is a great idea because you can also hollow out the wheelchair for more booze space!!
hack404@reddit
Just sit on it, nobody is going to ask someone in a wheelchair to move
uninspired@reddit
Just ask your prophetic leg if you're going to get busted or not. If it says no, bring twice as much contraband.
FrontStreetBlvd@reddit
It’s not that hard. Buy the booze RIGHT before you board… NOW…PRIOR TO LEAVING OR FLYING…buy a reusable URINAL…the male version…get two. Load the urinals with booze…two urinals can hold like two nice sized handles of whatever liquid…if you have time for this add on ; label the urinal with ANTI-DIARRHEAL SOLUTION, make it look passable… I have never tried this but I know ppl who have. Smokeable, edible and snortable inquiries are more of my lane. Royal is the best…balcony room? DO NOT FUCKING SMOKE ON YOUR BALCONY!!! You will be ratted out and you will be asked to leave the ship…NO BULLSHIT! Cigarettes as well…
Flynn_lives@reddit
the preferred method has always been to hide stuff in camera equipment.
Hollow out the inside of an old zoom lens(buy a broken one), and replace with a clear plastic reservoir that holds booze.
eish66@reddit
inject the teguila into whole oranges.
RikkiLostMyNumber@reddit
Don't they sell some ticket which provides unlimited drinks?
DiscontentDonut@reddit
It's an all or nothing, though. It can be upwards of $250+ per person, and you have to buy it for all adults in your cabin, or no one at all. So if at least two people are going, you're looking at at least $500.
Even when you go to port and purchase alcohol, you have to check it in with customs before you board the boat. They have a whole set up right at the boat's entrance. You don't get it until right before you disembark to go home.

cheezytitz@reddit
The alcohol drinks package can be anywhere from $70-90 per person, per day or more. And all adults in the room must purchase it, you can't just buy one if there two folks in the room.
I emphasize with OP for wanting to bring a bottle of tequila along.
BADoVLAD@reddit
I want to emphasize that the word here is sympathize.

In with your dangerous game of grammar Nazi
wannabe-martian@reddit
Nah, I don't. Going on a Cruise before hitting retirement, in America, and then being cheap about the drinks pass is pathetic, nothing else.
v81@reddit
Yeah, poor people suck.
They don't deserve to enjoy life.
wannabe-martian@reddit
Ya, no, not what I said but interesting you seem to see it that way. Being poor has nothing to do with having poor taste, or with my post.
All I'm saying is the fact you need alcohol so much you need to smuggle it says a lot. Americans on cruises are like Brits in Spain or Germans on Mallorca.
But heeey, reddit only for 'muricans, riiigght? /s
v81@reddit
1) I'm not American.
2) Having to pay >$200/day (Aussie pricing BTW) just to have a few scotch and cokes and wine with dinner is insane.
3) It's not the need or the amount, a couple being forced to buy 2 drink passes at this price is an unreasonable cost. Individual prices for drinks also are horrendous.
4) Wanting a couple of drinks over the day or a drink with dinner isn't an unreasonable thing for someone on a holiday.
DarehMeyod@reddit
I haven’t been on a cruise in 10 years but when we went we could choose an upgrade for free because we had balcony rooms. Could choose alcohol package, upgraded dining, excursion packages, or WiFi credits. This was Norwegian.
BBorNot@reddit
This is the way.
pattydog1127@reddit
Nobody sells passes for unlimited drinks. A pass, yes. But, Usually a 15 drink limit per day. And it’s not cheap. And you must purchase it for the entire cruise length. And you can’t share it. It’s not cheap!
Icy_Huckleberry_8049@reddit
yes
AdMore3461@reddit
190 proof Everclear does not bubble when shaken. Amazon sells water bottle caps with the safety rings still attached, I had some that fit SmartWater brand perfectly.
Do you not care about taste, and just want a good buzz from pregame before buying and babying a couple drinks? I also bought a lesser-common mouthwash with a non-see-through bottle (Tom’s peppermint) and filled it with peppermint schnapps, then I cut a safety seal from a medicine bottle to size and superglued it on the mouthwash bottle, then replaced the cap. Looked perfectly normal, and even if opened it would smell just as expected - peppermint and alcohol. Peppermint schnapps isn’t the tastiest booze, but some peppermint in your coffee or hot chocolate helps gets the day started lol.

Thank you! Which port did you go through, if I may ask?
matadorobex@reddit
Drink a bunch before boarding, then regurgitate it into a bowl as soon as you are safely in your room. Adding some fruit before hand will likely turn it into a tropical brew.
Garfield_and_Simon@reddit
Just give yourself auto-brewery syndrome before boarding
makeanewblueprint@reddit
Could be the move.
verbal-emesis@reddit
Add fruit to the bowl or add it before drinking? Sounds yummy either way
mpellman@reddit
If you can only smuggle one bottle onboard, why alcohol? A bottle of pure White Lightning LSD will go a LOT further than a bottle of vodka. And more fun, too!
Garfield_and_Simon@reddit
You could just put the LSD in your pocket and bring the alcohol too.
Plus binge drinking when coming down from LSD is kinda my favourite part of being on LSD.
Also though, if you really want to smuggle LSD and be unnecessarily cautious about it, just cut up the tabs into tiny scraps of paper and stick them in a crumpled up receipt than toss the receipt in a pocket of a random pair of pants in your bag.
biokemfem@reddit
Please tell me LSD part of the brand name with a weird acronym and not real LSD?
DisastrousBeeHive@reddit
How does that work with airports lol
biokemfem@reddit
I know people who have done it. I can’t bring myself to do it. I work in pharma and catching a charge like that would be the end of me.

My friend who has zero reason to be cheap, but is- loves to do cruises. She said that as she’s in line to get on the cruise, she’s holding a partially filled plastic Sprite (which is actually vodka) and her husband is holding a partially filled bottle of Coke (which is actually scotch).
scots@reddit
The oldest trick in the world is to fill a (thoroughly rinsed out) mouthwash bottle with vodka + blue or green food coloring to match the original product. You can then add it to fruit juice / mocktails /ice slushies from the buffet areas to make 'em spicy. ; ]
DoritoCatsMaid@reddit
This is how i sent rum to my husband in Iraq in 2007. Revealed the security wrap plastic with some tape and a hair dryer. I thought I was so clever coming up with it. 😆
specialized_faction@reddit
I tried this once. I emptied a brown listerine bottle with whiskey. While it did work to get booze on the ship, it had a faint taste of mouthwash. I ended up throwing it away after a couple drinks.
Hindsight, I probably could have put more effort into cleaning it before adding the whiskey
polishbyproxy@reddit

ViperidaeRex@reddit
What? Like what?
Longjumping-Pizza-48@reddit
In order to properly rince your Listerine bottle, you must completely clean it with clear water + dish soap and let it dry.
Then add a small amount of your drink, close the bottle and shake. You'll collect every "taste" forgot during your cleaning and it will deposit some whiskey/vodka/... on the bottle. Throw that away, fill it with your drink, enjoy.
Pro-tip: Clean the bottle cap as well.
ZombiesAtKendall@reddit
Except don’t throw the alcohol rinse away, just do some shots and chasers with it.
tamponinja@reddit
Same but with vodka. Yuck
Easy_Nefariousness38@reddit
I did this on a Carnival cruise a few years ago. I put tequila in there with some blue food coloring. My friends aunt saw me pour it and drink it and was soooo confused and worried 😂😂
Proctor20@reddit
Blue tequilla?
United_News3779@reddit
I worked with some guys who were sailors previously. Each of them had "recipes" for exactly how many drops of each color to mimic specific brands and flavors of mouthwash lol
PolishHammer22@reddit
We've used ginger ale bottles to smuggle our own Scotch. Lol
Get72ready@reddit
They just sell the fake bottles now. No need to washout and waste
tucsonkim@reddit
If you have to be that cheap, don't go on a cruise.
HoleyBody@reddit
https://www.rumrunnerflasks.com/ is the way.
Have used these multiple times, no problems ever.
boo23boo@reddit
These are pretty obvious though. Does it rely on making it through an xray without detection and no bag search? The moment someone sees it with human eyes, they know what it is.
Unhappy_Position496@reddit
I zipped them into the lining of my suitcase. Got 4 in. 3 people never bought hard liquor for the length of the cruise.
SFSecrets@reddit
They don’t get detected on X-ray if you get all the bottles out. Don’t give them an excuse to open your luggage.
summerer6911@reddit (OP)
But don't they have scanners that see the liquid?
XASTA123@reddit
Btw, these are just milk bags for lactating mothers with a brand logo slapped on.
Unhappy_Position496@reddit
We did rum runners. Plastic bags designed to hold liquids that don't pick up on the luggage scanners. I zipped them into the lining of my luggage. Garden variety when into a zip lock and in my sunscreen.
Proctor20@reddit
Make your one free wine bottle a Melchizedek. (contains 40 standard bottles)
Proctor20@reddit
If you’re smuggling booze because the prices are too high on board, then you’re taking the wrong vacation.
Large_Temporary_@reddit
Take large water bottle to port with you, drink it… fill it with vodka, rum… any clear booze… bring back on. Worked for me at every port. I also put the bottle in my senior mother’s purse to really ensure success.
Warm-Cantaloupe-69@reddit
Our group brought in Costco sized bottles in our luggage. The advice we received was tip the porters who offer to take your bags curbside and deliver directly to your room. $20 did the trick.
nomoreimfull@reddit
Smmmaaart.
bars2021@reddit
Yea we did water bottles filled to the brim with tequila. Same thing tip your person smile and be human.

futbolr88@reddit
Go to Amazon.
Search shambooze.
Pick the bottle you want.
Fill it to the neck so it doesn’t shake like a liquid would.
Seal.
Enjoy your trip.
summerer6911@reddit (OP)
I've heard their scanners can tell the difference between the types of liquid
futbolr88@reddit
I think your concern is giving the science too much credit. If that’s still a concern.
Buy Gatorade pack, clear is best but you can dye liquor.
Use a butter knife to take off the whole tamper resistant top.
Exchange liquid.
Put cap back on.
If you’re really paranoid then leave the outside bottles on the pack alone for the nonevent you need to test the bottle. But a mixer never hurt.
mimic@reddit
They just have metal detectors on the way in. Never seen liquids get shaken. Idk about big luggage, presumably it is scanned, but as long as you don’t take the piss it’s not an issue. Lots of people throw rum runners into their boots, etc. Tip your porters & be extra nice to all the staff and by the last day your drinks will be mostly alcohol either way.
nadvargas@reddit
I just put a big plastic flask in my boot. No problem
Used_Professional977@reddit
You can take 2 wine bottles I believe and we used to empty the wine and fill with liquor and then recork. Also, I believe toiletry type items such as the bottle of contact solution- just make sure to wash it out throughly first.
And this goes without saying but when you hit the ports, be very careful when bringing back guns and drugs onto the ship, have had experience with the latter and getting caught and not sure if due to my age of being only 15 they cut me some slack or what but never again. Now last year when I attempted to bring 2 hand grenades, a Glock and a Draco they actually detained me, interrogated me and made me sit in a holding center until I could get a flight home
dizzleb0526@reddit
I found a solution. You are allowed one free wine bottle per person. Buy a Kendall Jackson Chardonnay bottle or any bottle that fits this criteria: dark colored glass, foil that can slip off without being cut, synthetic cork. When putting your corkscrew in, make sure you only go halfway through. Drink the wine, save the foil you slipped off. Fill with liquor of choice. Replace the cork but with the side up that isn’t punctured. Slip the foil back on. Voila. They don’t check booze for booze. Bring empty plastic flasks for your pockets on the ship. Bartenders will have no problems giving you tonic water/soda/whatever.
ethnicnebraskan@reddit
This is all great but alternatively Amazon sells wine corks and foils that shrink to the bottle with a hair dryer. Ditto the comment about dark colored glass. Also brown liquor in a green bottle and pinot noir in a green bottle look almost identical.
bagelmaster2000@reddit
I’ve done this as well and it worked beautifully with the Amazon corks and heat shrink sleeves. We brought our own tumblers and asked the bartenders to fill it up with a mixer and provide some limes. Went back to our room, mixed our drinks and voila, we had extra large drinks to carry around all day. Our room attendant was great at keeping our ice bucket full. Only down side was frequent trips to our room to refill our drinks.
ethnicnebraskan@reddit
One could possibly use Mio flavor enhancer bottles, which come in sizes up to 3.24oz as a flask. I typically shy away from food coloring but in this case, if you grabbed a lemon flavored version and added yellow food coloring plus vodka, it would probably be pretty easy to fly under the radar.
J_Schnetz@reddit
I did this in 2018 and worked flawlessly
jillikinz@reddit
We did this exactly last year on an all-inclusive where my hubby was convinced they would not stock his favorite expensive booze. We finished off two bottles of red wine and rinsed and dried the bottles. Transferred his fave Scotch into the bottles and used the resealing kit. Worked like a charm and everyone was happy.
_B_Little_me@reddit
This is the correct answer.
ben121frank@reddit
They know this trick, I’ve seen them shake wine bottles to check for bubbles (bc wine will bubble but liquor won’t)
General-Hardass@reddit
Liquor bubbles too..
ben121frank@reddit
Ya I described that badly, I edited my comment. From my understanding, liquor bubbles are smaller and dissipate quickly while wine bubbles are bigger and linger longer. I don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, but I have seen them shake wine bottles while boarding 2 different cruises and have seen them confiscate a bottle, presumably for failing whatever they were checking, one of those times
bloks27@reddit
Duckhorn Sauvignon blanc works great for swapping too - it’s a screw top with a metal “foil”, but you can take off the screwtop and foil together without actually breaking the seal between the two. Swap the wine out for some vodka or tequila + food coloring, then replace the foil and top. Looks like it has never been opened before.

Wise_Pineapple4328@reddit
Why do you need to? I've never been on a cruise, but I thought drinks were included?
cometduke20@reddit
Funny story, we had heard that anything that resembled a bottle would be searched and opened so we bought several handles of liquor, double bagged them in zip locks and taped them shut.
We then placed them throughout our luggage and even taped to our body. Everything made it through and then we realized we never labeled anything so we had plastic bags of tequila, vodka, rum, whiskey, everclear etc which we then mixed with iced t because we were too cheap to buy the non-alcoholic drink package.
So bad, this was 2008 college spring break.
digclay@reddit
I know Nalgene used to make a plastic 10 oz. flask. It works well for places with a metal detector. Also you can buy what is essentially a bag for your wine/whatever you want to put in it.

tanank08@reddit
My buddy filled up a mouth wash bottle with vodka and put green food coloring in it.
lemonstraps@reddit
I’ve done this 3 times now. This is what I do. Each cruise goer is allowed to bring one bottle of wine. So I buy two bottles of wine and empty them. I add vodka gin or any clear liquor into the bottle with a tiny bit of yellow food colouring and then throw two corks into boiling hot water. I then reseal the bottles with corks and add a heat shrink cap on top to make the bottles look legit. I’ve never been questioned and since my partner doesn’t drink I have two bottles of vodka for a week of cruising which is more than enough for me.

"Bottles of Mouthwash"
Visible-Progress-874@reddit
Water bottles filled with vodka.
Mil3High@reddit
Do not fill a mouthwash bottle and try to dye it. I’m pretty sure they know this trick by now. Fill a bottle of contact solution (which they already probably know about… they just ignore it). You can also get recorking kits for wine bottles that make it look factory sealed. Idk how much the cost vs. reward matters to you, but these are options lol.
SolutionOriented33@reddit
If you’re allowed a case of water, you buy two cases of water. Heavier duty bottles are better than cheap ones. Open the first case and cut (with a knife) the tops off the bottles. Do the math so you don’t waste too many bottles. Divide the volume of liquor you want to bring by the volume of the water bottles. You’ll now have a bottle cap attached to 3/4” or 1” of cut bottle. Don’t break the safety seals.
Next, get a sauce pan with boiling some water, drop in a cap one at a time, and use two butter knife’s to dig out the remnants of the bottle.
Now you have a cap with a safety seal still attached.
I think I can stop here. I tend to over-explain…
NuclearHoagie@reddit
It's very easy to tell even a sealed bottle of water from one of liquor if you just shake it a little.
SolutionOriented33@reddit
The 4 or 5 liquor bottles are now in the center of the sealed case, where the remainder are actual water. No one’s shaking the case to look at the surface tension through the plastic wrapping. I’ve never had any trouble w this tactic.
--Ano--@reddit
The good thing about whiskey is that it looks like iced tea.
NuclearHoagie@reddit
If they choose to check, alcohol is very easy to tell from anything water-based even in a sealed bottle - shake it a bit, and the bubbles that form look totally different.
mzincali@reddit
I drink ice tea all day. On a zoom call, after I took a sip of my ice tea on ice, someone said, “what time is it where you are? I’d love some scotch but it’s not even afternoon here.“
