Thoughts on the 1911?

Love it? Hate it? Lemme know.
My take is that I think it’s one of the best handgun designs of all time. Is it modern? No not really. If I was in WWIII would I take one? Prolly not. Would I conceal carry one? No but if I had to I wouldn’t feel too bad about it. People forget that just because a design is old doesn’t mean it’s not effective. The 1911 works just as well today as it did in WWII. As for reliability, I have about 1,300ish rounds through mine and I haven’t had any issues since the 500 round mark, I found that any issues I had with it were due to the magazine, not the pistol itself. As for capacity, yes it is limited to 7-9 rounds but those are still 7-9 rounds of .45acp.
So in short, is the 1911 still the best handgun in the world? No I’d say the Glock or some newer polymer gun is prolly up there. But is the 1911 completely ineffective and worthless? No. It’s probably one of the best handgun designs ever.
Lemme know your thoughts. Also, please keep it respectful you’re not five years old anymore.
Fulgrim_Legion_III@reddit
Im considering buying a Remington R1 stainless in .45 ACP. I hope its a solid choice to start with.
Sad-Pay-5834@reddit (OP)
Don’t get a Remington, they aren’t known for their quality. Get a Springfield or Tisas. I got a Colt because I’m a sucker for the classics. Colt is good but the fitment isn’t the best and their qc isn’t as good as it once was. Mine works fine tho. It’s accurate and reliable
Fulgrim_Legion_III@reddit
Thanks, I will check out Springfield I really want something like this but also reliable, now I mostly carry G31 and its not that elegant as 1911 is.
Sad-Pay-5834@reddit (OP)
Yeah I have a Glock 19 and a Colt 1911. The Glock is the most practical but there’s something so mechanical and industrial about the 1911. Different vibes if

For sure. I like em. I have had 3 or 4 over the years and I never keep them. They get boring and im just like meh about em.
Sad-Pay-5834@reddit (OP)
That’s fair, ig it’s not for everyone
DisastrousPriority79@reddit
I was against it for awhile due to limited capacity alone without giving it a try. I have a few different firearm brands and am a good shot. between the extra weight of the 1911 and the longer barrel its noticeably different
DistanceParticular34@reddit
A piece of Americana, it's our Colt peacemaker brought into the modern era if you really think about it, America has had an obsession with 45 caliber pistols since the 1850s.
gravion17@reddit
It's an Icon...A Legend...and the weapon I "Qualified" on in NAVY Boot Camp! I want one but only a "real" one...GOV Issued 1911A.
DashMcGee@reddit
PS In my experience, 1911's are the easiest gun to handle, fire, and recover. The weight helps a lot, but they are not too heavy because they are so well balanced (at least the 5 inch ones are). The 45 acp is a lower-recoil round with less muzzle flip than 9mm. (You can get 1911's in 9mm if you want. The other thing is that I have small hands that fit the 1911 well. Most modern polymer guns are a little too fat for me, but a 1911 fits my hand.
DashMcGee@reddit
I'm surprised that only 108 people commented at this point. I have not read the other comments, but you can accept the insights from anyone who says they are the best guns in the universe. If anyone says bad things, they are probably aliens who don't want you shooting them in the universe.
_Zero_Fux_@reddit
1911's are fantastic. Further, there are several 1911's out there that can be a daily concealed carry.
The masses will say "omg you need 17 rounds and that only holds 7-8". Ignore them, 1911 is worth carrying.
winston_smith1977@reddit
They really hold 8 or 9 in 45, 11 in 9mm.
_Zero_Fux_@reddit
The smaller versions like the colt defender are usually 7-8
Interesting_Sorbet22@reddit
In a standard Colt magazine, in a Government Model, the capacity is 7. The Officer Model is 6. Both in 45acp. Not sure of the 9mm capacity. Several companies came out with 8 round mags. Note, the 7 and 8 round mags work in the Officer Model, although they obviously stick out a bit.
1Crusty_Old_Man@reddit
I carried a 1911 for 44 years. I only quit because my eyes are apparently aging faster than my mind/body. In my mind I'm still that 20 year old USMC stud. My body says I'm closer to 70, my eyes think I'm 80.

Rollastoney_@reddit
How is it outdated 😂 it’s the best adapted firearm given its age.
TedTheReckless@reddit
Single stack 45 with an overly complicated takedown method compared to any modern handgun
And while I don't think attachments are that necessary for handguns they don't have the same level of customization out of the box as other handguns do.
JackFuckCockBag@reddit
I've owned 2 and still own one. It's one of my 2 favorites, the1911 and the Beretta 92. I don't know which I like more. I've got 5 others but those 2 take the top slot.
KedTazynski42@reddit
Got one in 10mm. Absolutely love it. I have newer and more tactical guns, but as a woods gun and just classy piece it’s hard to beat

1Crusty_Old_Man@reddit
I'm back up to two dozen 1911's. I got rid of some duplicates and all the sub 4" guns a few years back. But I've refilled the ranks. Finally got that .38 Super I always wanted and as a bonus it was optics ready. Also picked up several more .45's and a couple more 9mm's.
disturbed286@reddit
I think we have two dozen guns total, and sometimes I feel like that's a lot.

That's barely enough.

I’m not familiar with 1911s. Does colt make the best 1911?
TacosNGuns@reddit
No, not remotely the best. Arguably among the worst in quality, fit, features & finish.
BigBoarBallistics@reddit
that's a bit of a stretch
TacosNGuns@reddit
Hey some of the pony roll marks are pretty. It’s most of the value in the gun 🤷♂️
BigBoarBallistics@reddit
i'm saying that they are not the worst in fit finish features and quality.
1Crusty_Old_Man@reddit
Define best.
In no metric is Colt the best, and they haven't been the "best" in decades.
A $300 Tisas is a better gun than a run of the mill Colt, and a $10k bespoke build is amazing.
Chasing_Perfect_EDC@reddit
A comparison from r/1911
Sad-Pay-5834@reddit (OP)
No, in 2025 Colt is not doing too well but they’re still reliable. My Colt is great but they’ve had a lot of qc issues with barrels lately. The “best” is arguable, like what do you mean? A competition gun or a field gun? Tight gun is good for accuracy but not reliablity, a looser gun that rattles (like Colt) is more ideal for long term reliability in the field. A lot of guys want tight speed guns so they don’t buy colt.
TacosNGuns@reddit
Yes, but I won’t buy a Colt. Virtually every other 1911 maker makes a more reliable trustworthy 1911. Colts only killer feature is the Pony roll mark.
Econguy89@reddit
Not arguing that you’re wrong, but what’s wrong with modern day colt?
I don’t know much about colt in modern times, just their past really.
1Crusty_Old_Man@reddit
Colt hasn't produced a quality 1911 since the '70's.
They've been riding that pony into the ground.
A $300 Tisas is a better pistol than a run of the mill Colt. Better fit and better parts.
spinonesarethebest@reddit
I bought a Series 80 Stainless Enhanced around 1993. It was my comp gun for years and has around 60k through it.
Had to replace an extractor a few years in. That’s it.
TacosNGuns@reddit
Sounds like you bought an exceptional Colt. The last series 80 I shot, the rear sight flew off on the first magazine. Had to wait for a cold range to move forward and look for it 😂
Brewtown@reddit
Ive owned a lot of Colts. Outside of spending some stupid coin on a nighthawk or Wilson, I'll take one over any of the Turkish, phillipine, Kimber any day of the week.
I also like detonics and Ruger.
TacosNGuns@reddit
I’d take a Kimber/Springfield over any Colt. And a Les Baer over any 1911.
Brewtown@reddit
I mean, anything before 1995 Springfield.
SetNo8186@reddit
The fun part with these discussions is realizing there is no "best." In fact, best is the enemy of good. Case in point, the Singer 1911 which collector pay high prices for are the few that finally made it thru inspection - Singer was commissioned to come up with blueprints (never done before, Colt worked on the sample parts the Browning Bros actually machined.) And along with that, production improvements to cut out all the mill work for massive volumes. They did - Remington Rands and Ithacas went into the millions - but their own factory couldn't. They scrapped 25,000 and got a few hundred thru.
With that in mind, what's "Best" isnt always what is good. Another example, when all the competition shooters in the 70s and 80s started tightening up the rails, bushings etc to make them match level accurate, the result was a handgun that jammed in cold weather, jammed with too much lube, jammed in dusty conditions, jammed using hollow points. Browning NEVER intended for it be a range toy, it was a field handgun used outdoors in all sorts of weather, even on horseback, and it was rattly, loose as a goose and would fire if you gave it a mud bath. But not precision accuracy - it wasn't needed at a minute of man target 18" wide out to 40 meters. Iron sights, gud enuf, ball ammo, gud enuf, idiot scratch, gud enuf. They came with cheap grips and were carried in tanned leather, nobody expected barbecue level ostentatious engraving to impress anyone. It doesn't make it more accurate and it was never meant to be in the sense of separating the top 2% of national shooters. Its a beater war gun and for the most part as much rank insignia as weapon for those in control - officers and MP's.
American makes too much of them and for all that, the Pentagon went to the point of having Army Pistol Trials in 1954 to get rid of them and couldn't. Bean counters said use your thrice rebuilt junkers in Korea and make do. But the submitted guns to that competition are interesting - the Smith auto 9mm and the Officer .45acp. The Smith was based on the Walther P38 which Command preferred at the time - and 30 years later got it on the P38 based Beretta.
AI is sending out bot accounts to prompt questions like this, so humans need to make it known that is who did this answer.
1Crusty_Old_Man@reddit
Singer built 500 guns. They were the best built of the WWII production. The military realized that the precision that Singer was used to working with, was far better utilized in building bomb sights than pistols.

Whole-Lingonberry-74@reddit
It's a great old pistol. All steel in its original carnation. I have four and my Dan Wesson in 9mm is still a favorite. Would I carry one today? I wouldn't pick it to be the life defender in today's world. This isn't the Old West and everyone doesn't open carry. Carrying is a compromise in comfort and firepower. A nice 2011 is way better and has every benefit of the 1911.

ProbablyLongComment@reddit
I thought that it was the most pedestrian, overrated fudd gun of them all--until I bought one.
I have several now. They are terrifically smooth-shooting, and just a delight to use. That single-action trigger, even on "budget" 1911s, is lighter and more crisp than most triggers on high-end handguns.
The ergonomics are perfect. Full-size, commander, or compact, they all fit my hand like they were made for me. Try making a fist and pointing your arm at an object. Then, without moving your arm, relax your hand just enough to grip a 1911. The sights will naturally be aimed dead-on at whatever your arm was pointed at.
Grips, holsters, magazines, and other accessories abound. You can replace every part of the gun except for the frame with something customized to your exact liking if you're inclined.
Single-stack doesn't bother me. It makes the gun slimmer, and more reliable. Anyone who is in a gunfight and needs more than 7 rounds, has already lost that gunfight.
I don't have the sacred reverence for the .45 AP that some do, but it's a solid round that punches a big hole, without too much recoil or overpenetration. Inherently subsonic, too, so you can suppress it without buying special ammo that may affect the weapon's cycling.
My only complaint is that I wish the 1911 had a decocker. I want to carry one in the chamber, but I don't like the idea of carrying with the hammer cocked, and I don't want to try to carefully lower the hammer on a live round.

When I was a new private, one of the sergeants told me that the 1911 was the most dangerous weapon in the Army.... because they gave it to lieutenants.
Draskuul@reddit
While I've built a number of AR platform guns (some from 80% receivers), I've only done one pistol, a 9mm 1911 using a Stealth Arms 80% frame. I intentionally picked all "fit required" parts rather than "drop in." I easily had 80+ hours put into this.
I hand-filed everything to fit, only opening up tolerances just enough to get it running smoothly. I even did the finish reaming on my chamber, again going for a tight tolerance.
The only two things I didn't do myself were the grips (found someone to custom make some water buffalo horn scales) and paid someone to properly Cerakote it (since it was a raw aluminum frame). Hardest part there was finding someone willing to do it since they are all scared of being counted as "manufacturing" and handling a no-serial-number item (despite that really not being a real issue as far as the ATF is concerned).
Why 9mm? First, I had a .45 ACP pistol already (XDM). Second, I was expecting to inherit my grandfather's WW2 era (non-govt) 1911, which I do have now.
Both great range guns. But like with others here I don't carry one, just too large and heavy. I stick to my Shield Plus or 642Pro.
GreatDevelopment225@reddit
Looking for a looker? 1911 Want to connect with history? 1911 Want something modern? 2011
They don't do it for me because I don't prefer to have a manual safety, nor do I like the grip safety. I do, kind of unusually for a person my age, prefer hammer fired pistols. Between that and a few other genius Browning features I carry some of the 1911 with me daily even though I don't carry a 1911 or a 2011.

Classic. Stylish. Iconic. And my favorite gun to shoot.
Terrible-Income1987@reddit
Yeah i mean if your into the cool factor or are a collector, enjoy old things and history then its great!
Me personally i really aint into collecting. I dont have the itch for it. For me i just see my pistol as a tool. I have 1 and i got really effective with that 1. Its the only one ive shot for quite some time now so my brain could shut off and my body would probably grip it correctly and present the dot with out any thought.
Would i carry one? No way 😂. Thats large and heavy for just 8 rounds. With the stuff thats out anymore id feel a little...idk handicapped. Its more complex than modern day striker fired pistols, idk how easy of cheap getting parts would be. I sort of would like every advantage i can gain possible. Sorta feel like id be cheating myself everytime id put it in my holster.
If you decide to carry it though i dont think your dumb or anything. This is my opinion but its sure as hell better than no gun. Some people still choose a revolver so. I guess theres how i feel.
Pretty cool peice of iron though.

I've carried them POGO (pants on, gun on) for a long time. My EDC is an expensive one guaranteed to put 3 shots into 1.5" at 50 yards, and it does. If I didn't carry a 1911 I'd carry my G17.

It’s a classic. Modern semiautomatic handguns still use elements of the design. Arguably one of the most influential firearms ever.
