North - the edge of the Arctic Circle north of Fairbanks, Alaska South - Invercargill, New Zealand East - how are we judging this? As close to the International Date Line as possible? If so, Gisborne, New Zealand West - Hawaii (as judged by the same idea as East)

View on Reddit #707439

AllthisSandInMyCrack@reddit

West of Hawaii would be chiang Mai no? Direction based on NESW would be on where you’re located.
View on Reddit #704293

ArticulateAquarium@reddit

Ooh! Hawaii is a good one as it's so near the International date line. You're in the far west there, possibly one of the furthest west places on Earth! Reykjavik is west of Thailand, as is India, and definitely as is Hawaii. If you mean Wellington, NZ, then that's the furthest east place but Chiang Mai could be an honourable mention as it's very 'eastern' culturally.
View on Reddit #704567

AllthisSandInMyCrack@reddit

OP just said where have you travelled in any direction. Quite a bad question imo, nothing about culturally eastern or otherwise.
View on Reddit #704829

ArticulateAquarium@reddit

Indeed! I reread their post and there are multiple ways to answer it. I assumed just absolute NSEW, but it could be 'furthest from your home' or it could even be 'furthest from where you started'. I travelled from S Korea to New Zealand which was the furthest southerly journey, then returned so that was the furthest northerly one - but I've also been to Finland which is further north. UK to Korea furthest easterly, back to UK is furthest westerly, but I've been to Vegas too.

North: Latvia I think. North Korea and British Colombia might be contenders, I’d have to look at a map. South: King George Island, Antarctica East and West I’m not sure how to define? I’m based in Australia so going to Japan or China is actually travelling West to me. Regardless I’ve been all through Asia, Africa, North and South America and Oceania plus some of Europe so somewhere there. The West Coast US would be the furthest eastbound flight I’ve taken.
View on Reddit #703058

View on Reddit #706428

North Korea is only as far north as Greece. Depending where you were in BC could be further north than Latvia, but Vancouver for instance is only as far north as Paris.
View on Reddit #705149

I have since looked at a map, Latvia is clear winner for northern destination. Though I’ve gone further north on planes between Europe and Asia.
View on Reddit #705204

Paddy-23@reddit

Yeah if we include planes it would be interesting but could get a bit complicated. I’ve flown between London and Japan which I think goes pretty far north over Russia (or used to before the airspace was closed).

ArticulateAquarium@reddit

Not silly when talking about locations and everyone understands
View on Reddit #703794

TheRealJohnRedCorn@reddit

Well there seem to be a few other people in the thread including OP that agree that east and west are pretty hard to define unless you’re starting in the UK.
View on Reddit #703978

Redditman9909@reddit

I think you already have the right idea. The question is asking how far East or West you’ve been from where you live. Most people in the comments who seem to be a bit confused live in places like Australia or Alaska like yourself, which are both nearer to the easternmost or westernmost extremities at the International Date Line than most other people. Where you live (or nearby) may already be the farthest West you’ve been, unless you’ve been to Hawaii or one of the Aleutian Islands near Russia.
View on Reddit #706337

ArticulateAquarium@reddit

Surely, you've got the 'Far East' and 'Middle East' to relate to - where ever you are - although saying the sun rises in the east might be confusing if you're in Siberia (I expect, as it'll probably rise in the 'Far West'). I assume you're in the States so it rises in the east for you and sets in the west, and although you travel west to get to the Far East it's in the name. tldr; almost everything is west of the 'Far East' >a few other people in the thread That's called 'the Bandwagon fallacy'. Admittedly, I'm from the UK and so probably naturally understood east vs west more easily. Also north and south are made up by us, with the poles helping us visualise something meaningless in space (there's no gravity and up or down in space). Greenwich isn't as obvious as the Arctic and Antarctica, obviously, just the first place to use it on maps I'm guessing.

View on Reddit #704823

So there would be a lot of people that would have to leave one of more directions as blank! Someone living in the US could easily never have been further north or east than the UK.
