What sports events should/Not be free to air?

Some events have to be free to air like the football world cup and Olympics. Why is Wimbledon and Epson Derby/Grand National protected but the Open Golf and Cricket world cup are not. The Commonwealth games in Glasgow this year will be on TNT rather than BBC surely this is more important than horse racing.

It's completely arbitrary and realistically, if you wish to have a free market, there should be none which are enshrined in law. Also, if it airs on TV, it's not really free to air because you need a TV Licence to watch it legally.

As a huge fan of F1 I don't advocate much for it being free to air. The money generated by the PPV model has seen the sport sky-rocket in popularity. Those of us who resent paying can always just go sailing so to speak. For that matter, I don't think any sport that is generating revenue should be paid for by licence payers if they want to see it on TV. On a similar note, it angers me that the BBC show Glastonbury coverage, and half the staff who go (taking up the entire media allocation for the entire festival) are just there on a jolly.
