Are Walking Pads Worth It?
Posted by writinglilac@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 203 comments
As the title suggests, I am looking at buying a walking pad off Amazon. I don’t like the gym, and would much prefer to do home workouts. I work a 9-5 in an office, and I want to try and get 10k steps in by using a walking pad.
Would people say these are worth it? Will they help me lose weight? Does anybody have recommendations for walking pads around the £100 budget?
Thanks!
fitfixlife@reddit
Best walking pads available within budget. Check this out, i did some research on it already.
siblingrevelryagain@reddit
For those looking for a second hand one-I just ordered one about 20 mins ago, so I’ll come back to you in a few weeks and you can make me an offer #ADHD
elliofant@reddit
Honestly I have ADHD too and my walking pad is the one that helps my brain work because physical exercise really helps my brain function. I work from home and have a standing desk, being able to stand up and walk has been such a lifesaver.
daftcockneytwat@reddit
Did you find a reliable one? I'm hyper focused on buying one, so I've been googling it for weeks but I don't trust any reviews!
mekkie23@reddit
I’ll be waiting for an offer and in a month I’ll be giving it away so watch this space #hyperfixation #adhd
siblingrevelryagain@reddit
The struggle is real 😉
Missing-Caffeine@reddit
You can try to find some on GumTree/Fb Market place for this price - bet lots of people have one and want to get rid of it.
fergie_89@reddit
I am looking at this (well my husband is because I don't have social media anywhere but here).
For me though I want a guarantee with it so I can return it if it breaks like with most electronics.
I'm giving it till Feb to order so we can scout marketplace etc if something reallllllly cheap comes up when people throw out their new year resolutions.
Otherwise I found one on Amazon that's £79 with loads of good reviews that I'll be ordering.
I just want one so when I get up and stretch while between meetings I can get steps in and away from my desk while on long calls. I lost 20lbs since moving house in August and want to keep my momentum up but outside is cold and dingy inside is warm and cosy.
Electronic_Amphibian@reddit
Be aware those cheap ones can be a little dangerous. Poor wiring and low quality parts leading them to breakdown or overheat. A lot of the reviews are from when people first buy them but they get stuck in a cupboard in a few weeks of limited use.
That said, I have a cheap one. It gets very hot after about 40 mins so I let it cool down between sessions and use treadmill lubricant.
walkingpad_official@reddit
Agreed. Stay away from a cheap one. We are here to help if you have questions.
Electronic_Amphibian@reddit
Funny you say that. The cheap one I had when I made that post just broke so i'm looking to replace it, preferably with an actual walking pad. I'm tempted by the WalkingPad R1 Pro for mostly walking whilst working but some light jogging but it's really difficult to see the difference between all the models. Do you have a quick overview of the different types?
Also, is there a distance I should keep below per session to stop the motor burning out and how much distance can I expect to get before the treadmill needs replacing?
Also also, are there any extra discounts you can give? I'm in the UK.
fergie_89@reddit
It's normal retail is £250 it's just in the January sales at the moment (but I'm not buying anything until pay day in 2 weeks). My husband is a super techy guy who is doing the research for me 🤣
I'll keep this in mind though thank you.
My brain knows it won't be used much but I'm trying to be good and more active, realistically I just want one that doesn't break the bank or burn my house down and won't shove it in the garage in 6 months time like most of the exercise stuff I own.
TheClnl@reddit
If you do get one make sure to avoid DeerRun, it's basically all false. Wife ordered one and it never came, when we looked into it more deeply it appears they give loads away to influencers but hardly ever ship to actual customers. We got our money back in the end but it was a pain.
walkingpad_official@reddit
We are the original and inventor of the WalkingPad and happy to help.
redhoodhead@reddit
To add, I got mine, but it wouldn’t turn on…like at all and all they kept telling me to do was turn it off and on again 💀
TheClnl@reddit
That's nuts. The whole thing is like an experiment in the power of influencers.
99% of reviews are either 5 or 1 star
fergie_89@reddit
I'll bear than in mind thank you! I looked at decathalon and their basic ones are going for around £90 at the moment. Alas I am waiting until pay day as his birthday is in Jan so I get hit twice with expensive shit in one salary.
The brand is CityRun?
I don't follow or like any Influencer stuff to be fair, I go off word of mouth or reddit reviews and it has served me well so far.
I hadn't heard of DeerRun but now it's on my black list!
itchyeejit@reddit
Aye especially in Feb/March when people start giving up on the resolutions. You get some great deals on gym equipment on fb marketplace
lifetypo10@reddit
Yeah I got mine on marketplace for £50, it's great but annoyingly I no longer work from home so it's just gathering dust.
Low-Bat9059@reddit
Sell it to OP

Cash converters/your local charity shop that takes electricals too. And I think that might be indicative of how ‘worth it’ they are…
AggravatingPumpkin72@reddit
Great if you've got somewhere to store it, like under a sofa, alas I didn't so was always taking up space. Used mine for about 3 months but got bored of being sweaty indoors, went out and walked in nature instead. Save your money and embrace the fresh air instead.
Serious_Escape_5438@reddit
I want one because I have a small child at home so can't go out for early morning walks etc. And yes I go out with her but it's not real exercise, she doesn't let me listen to a podcast and keep walking.
walkingpad_official@reddit
Time is so limited. It is so nice to have the convenience of getting steps in even when you only have a few minutes.
Dimac99@reddit
God, yeah, have you noticed how slowly they walk too? Come on, munchkin, I need to get a sweat on!
bikinikills@reddit
They work 9-5, it's already dark when they can walk. And cold. Good advice for half the year but not this half.
InfiniteTallgeese@reddit
You can walk in the dark and cold. Just wrap up.
sittingonahillside@reddit
You aren't wrong, probably touched a nerve though.
You'll find it's too cold, too wet, too windy, too out in the sticks, too dark, too old, too young, too fat, dangerous roads, too much crime, fear of abuse, and failing all of that, no time.
InfiniteTallgeese@reddit
I just get the feeling people use any excuse to not get outdoors, and this thread is a little evidence of that. Don't mind if people disagree with me though, each to their own.
sittingonahillside@reddit
agree.
I just find it nuts that people disagree with wrapping up becasue it's dark and cold, and treat it as a road block for going on a walk. Madness! Most of the UK doesn't even get particulary cold at any time of the year.
bikinikills@reddit
Not the cold, but the dark. I don't feel safe walking alone in the dark. I don't think that's something to call madness.
bikinikills@reddit
It's not one or the other though. I don't drive, so I walk a lot. I do like walking when it's bright and dry. I personally feel unsafe walking alone in the dark, but to each their own.
Added to that, my local park doesn't have any lights at all and people have been raped there, so my walk would then have to be just up and down my local high street which doesn't feel fun or interesting.
I can see where a walk pad would be useful at home when it's dark in the early evening, and you want to get some steps in.
I can also see the obvious benefit of walking outside.
sittingonahillside@reddit
Defeatist and lazy attitude, seriously.
If you aren't prepared to walk for an hour in the dark, you're probably never going to walk what's needed to maintain health. It's just another bullshit excuse not to exercise. Weather aside, if you can't find the time for a 30 minute walk at any time of the year, then you're looking for any reason not to, buying a walking mat is a dumb idea as well. Sorry op!
Millions (probably billions) of people get up and commute in the dark, in climate conditions that make the UK look like a paradise. I have nieces and nephews right now (two of which are 10 and under) who are getting up at 6.30 am where it's between -10 and -5, to get to school for 8 am (of their own accord), and they do similar after school for sporting and social clubs.
Wear a hat, wear some layers, wear a head torch and something reflective. Cold, wet, damp and snowy weather isn't going to hurt you.
Diligent_Craft_1165@reddit
It’s not dark at 8am and it’s not dark on the lunch break.
Sudden-County-4293@reddit
Ita pretty dark at 8am
Knowlesdinho@reddit
Yep, but the weather is also a factor.
I prefer walking outside, but November and half of December wad a write off for pre work and lunchtime walks where I live.
I split between both the walking pad and outside when the weather is bad.
alicatpow@reddit
Depends where in the UK they are. I'm up North and 8am is definitely still dark for about a month and a half of the year.
Lunch break walks are all well and good but it makes sense for them to want to get more in. I only get half an hour for my break and need to be back and logged in at the end of that, so can only actually walk for about 25 mins once you take into account the time spent leaving and the time spent taking off boots, coat, etc and getting myself situated back at my desk. That's not ideal as total exercise for the day.
(I personally am happy to walk in the dark since getting a dog, but I'm lucky to live somewhere with not many roads so don't have to worry about that aspect of safety. I trust my dog to protect me on the off chance that a person with bad intentions was lurking on the beach, but he couldn't do shit to protect me from a vehicle so if that was my fear I might also need a walking pad).
Due_Vanilla9786@reddit
idk where you live but where i live, it’s 100% still pretty dark at 8am during the longest nights. sunrise tomorrow is 8.40am, for example.
Tim-Sanchez@reddit
You can get get out for fresh air, but you're not gonna hit enough steps out on a lunch break walk.
742963@reddit
The immune system is just deteriorating the outside is good for health not to shy away and be scared
AggravatingPumpkin72@reddit
Fair point, missed that bit.
Basic-Pangolin553@reddit
Same, I live down dark country roads where its not safe to walk at night because of cars, I dont want to have to drive to take a walk
3bmanwell1@reddit
I've got a walking pad too but don't use it much, like you I prefer the outdoors.
Also, OP, if you get one, two things to consider 1) you may feel a bit dizzy walking on it at first, and 2) you might need some sound proofing either for your own sanity or neighbours (I mean, padding under the walking pad)
I know you work 9-5 but what about also longer walks on the weekend?
spacedoggos_@reddit
I have one, it’s great together with a standing desk so you can have stability and do things. You have to be quite self motivated to use it. £100 is a little low, you want to get one that going to last, not cause injury, and not be such a bad experience it puts you off. The UREVO brand on Amazon is highly reviewed and I’ve liked it, I think it was £170.
Creepy_Resource5729@reddit
but you've just suggested a chinese brand "UREVO", they're all made in china in the same sort of factories lol, just pay attention to number of reviews and high amount of stars
Grand_Act8840@reddit
Yeah anything on Amazon with a “brand” name like that is not an actual real brand.
walkingpad_official@reddit
We are. We invented the name and category. Unfortunately, there are a lot of cheap knock offs out there. Here to help if you need.
Sidian@reddit
Amazon reviews are insanely unreliable and sometimes not even for the rigfht product... not sure how they do it but sometimes I'll see a highly rated, like, let's say a table, scroll down and read the reviews and they're like 'these rubber bands are great!'. Lots of obviously AI-written reviews, reviews that are nearly identical to each other clearly written by the same person, etc.
DD265@reddit
I believe the page starts off being a listing for item A, then once reviews have been collecting for a while, they update the images, description, price etc to be item B.
As I understand it, as long as the item number stays the same, Amazon is none the wiser (I assume this bait and switch is against the rules) until it's reported.
anotherMrLizard@reddit
Most of the stuff you own is made in a factory in China. China has different factories with different quality standards.
Charming-Permit-7437@reddit
I'm on my second one because I bought a cheap one - but it broke within a year and Amazon gave me a refund as the merchant wasn't on Amazon anymore. They even collected it for me.
I love it, it gets my steps in and I don't put too much pressure on myself to walk big blocks - 10 minutes here and there throughout the evening and I'm done for the day. Usually though, once you get to 10 minutes, you're in the zone so prolong it. I tend to listen to albums or podcasts on it and the time flies.
I think the one I have is a ToDo(?) one from Amazon. I'd recommend them.
walkingpad_official@reddit
Love to hear it.
kai_enby@reddit
I also love mine, I've not been using it for the past month or so as I've been moving house and I have boxes everywhere, excited to get back into using it again. I sometimes listen to audiobooks or podcasts, sometimes scroll on my phone, sometimes read a book, and sometimes watch TV
Charming-Permit-7437@reddit
AUDIOBOOKS!!! My word, how and why haven't I thought of that. Thank you!
Boredpanda31@reddit
Ive just bought this. It is more than you said, but it's foldable, inclines and has a LED monitor telling you various things.
I work from home so I'll use it while i am working (when I'm not on calls etc). I already have a standing desk so will just pop it under that.
Tatsuyo636@reddit
the link doesn't work, what make was it again please? is it quiet enough, I live in a flat and would use it in the evening whilst watching series or early mornings
Boredpanda31@reddit
Ah, I had to return mine 🙈 the screen was cracked and it wouldn't unfold properly!
Can't recommend, sorry!
ExplosiveTigger@reddit
I got a relatively cheap one about a year ago, as I work from home most the time and wanted to not sit on my ass for 8 hrs straight.
I would say it's definitely been worth it, even just to do half an hour or so a day.
If I had more space I would totally get a more moveable one so that I can walk and play video games 😆
Tatsuyo636@reddit
How loud is it? The specs say <35db, which is the least I've seen so far.
ExplosiveTigger@reddit
Not very loud really, light mechanical whirr that doesn't interrupt whatever I'm watching while using it 😂
Tatsuyo636@reddit
I'm looking into buying one under £100 too, as I think they are great! Losing weight or not, better to walk on the pad than not be active at all on busy days. I need a very quiet one too, so I would like to know what people think!
micropig101@reddit
Yes! I got mine just after Christmas from Amazon for £60 and have used it everyday - it’s fab!

Along with the IKEA (manual) standing desk. They work together well and it’s not too much money to buy both.
Just a couple of things to be aware of - the walking pad needs to ideally go on a hard floor or you’ll need to get a mat to go under. They don’t work well on carpet.
They are also quite heavy and large. So storing it out the way, moving it can be tricky if you are swapping between à chair and pad on the same desk. (It has wheels but it is still fairly heavy).
I’ve also found, that I don’t really use it a huge amount while I’m working, as I find it very hard to type and walk.
If I’m on an ‘off camera’ call where I know I won’t need to talk, it’s fine, but I’ve found that I mainly use it very early in the morning or evening, while watching YouTube or listening to music and just getting the steps in.
So you might find the same, in which case you probably don’t need the standing desk!
MasterFrost01@reddit
I've used mine on carpet for years and never had an issue. What would the issue be?
chickennugaesthetic@reddit
As a general rule (or what I understood when I looked into buying mine) they recommend no carpets as carpets tend to be more uneven, so less stable, and where the pad sinks into the carpet a bit, the motor vent can be blocked underneath so there is restricted airflow.
With this one in particular, it sits very flat with not much clearance for the vent underneath, so does sit against a carpet, especially longer pile.
MasterFrost01@reddit
Mine has feet and I stand up when I'm not using it, so maybe that's why. Good to know though

I came here to recommend this one. I bought mine in Jan 2023 and I use it fairly regularly -4x per week - sometime I use it during team meetings or the ones you don’t need to talk in when WFH but mostly in the evening while watching tv.
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
Save your money and just buy a decent pair of trainers, and go outside for a walk, it will take you around an hour to do 10k steps, and you can vary the route. The reason most of the indoor exercise equipment gets sold after a few weeks of use, is that it's boring walking nowhere in your front room. Will you loose weight ? Depends how fast you walk, and can you eat better.
reztem001@reddit
Yes bought one from Amazon, use it daily
Leader_Bee@reddit
I'm confused what the difference between a walking pad and a treadmill are? Is it just that walking pads are flat?
quenishi@reddit
Husband got one recently, been using it. I have kinda crappy joints, so it's nice low-impact exercise I can actually do some of daily without having to go outside. He also has an elliptical, but that ended up hurting my knees as I don't seem to be quite the right size for it.
We do have a room with a hard floor that's concrete underneath so perfect for exercise machines. Flat and eats vibrations.
I'd look at exercise as improving physical condition rather than losing weight. Most weight loss is done by not eating all the things, but weirdly I get less ravenous if I regularly exercise.
Inevitable_Outcome56@reddit
Check the length of your stride first before you order, against the length of the platform. A colleague bought one last January and put it under his standing desk. Turns out his stride was too long. Repeated landed on his face.
smileyhappy@reddit
I absolutely love mine. Bought it second hand on a whim and it’s been an amazing purchase. I have a corporate role and wfh. That, paired with Caroline Girvan Iron workouts on YouTube is my 2026 exercise plan.
BrightSignal8032@reddit
I bought one for my mum on ebay for like £130 but I think there's cheaper ones. She loves hers and uses it all the time. Even I have when I need to catch up on steps and if I slow it down enough I even can get some reading done
deskmeetface@reddit
I had one for a while but stopped using it because I found it too difficult to do any real work while on it. I could basically answer emails while on it, but trying to do any focused work was difficult to the movements created by walking. It would be difficult to accurately type or move the mouse. I also couldn't use it on calls as I'd then sound out of breath when talking.
Wishmaster891@reddit
To lose weight you nee to be in a calorie deficit. Exercise will help with that but it’s not essential for losing weight.
Gent415@reddit
But it's better to get into calorie deficit by exercising rather than starving. Not really sure it's helpful to state the obvious though.
Boredpanda31@reddit
You don't have to starve yourself to be in a calorie deficit. TDEE calculator is good for working out how many calories people should have per day for gaining, maintaining or losing and you can incorporate how much exercise you do to the calculation.
epiDXB@reddit
Yes, and to maintain a calorie deficit without exercise, the amount you actually need to take in is tiny and you will feel hungry most of the time. This is what OC means by "starving".
If you create said deficit by exercise, you can eat more and hence feel less hungry. This is a healthier and more sustainable approach to weight loss.
Boredpanda31@reddit
It's just not though, as someone who regularly reviews their calorie intake and what I should be doing, while doing little to no exercise, it's not tiny at all.
epiDXB@reddit
No, it is tiny, and it will leave you hungry most of the time. This is one of many reasons why people find it hard to lose fat.
If that amount of food was "not tiny at all", people would be satisfied with it and society would not have an obesity problem.
donalmacc@reddit
Exercise is always good but it's way easier to adjust diet than it is to do enough exercise to lose weight and control the appetite that comes with it. If you currently eat too much, and start doing exercise you'll likely increase the amount you eat and still not lose weight.
A sedentary adult needs ~1500-2000kcal per day. If you run 5k, you'll burn about 300 calories. A croissant from the lidl bakery is about the same, or two slices of toast + butter + jam. What's easier - running 5k, or missing a snack?
epiDXB@reddit
This is a myth. It is easier to burn off calories than it is to skip food.
Running 5k is significantly easier than going hungry. You dishonestly characterise 300 calories as a "snack", and give some bizarre food examples that no one seriously trying to lose weight would choose, but that 300 calories could be a decent-size salad; the difference between being distractedly hungry and feeling fine.
_Comped_Sushi_@reddit
Exercise doesn't have to be going for a run or stuff like that though, just moving more and getting steps in is sufficient and mild exercise can suppress appetite
SuzLouA@reddit
It’s incredibly difficult to get into a calorie deficit purely with exercise. For a start, the more you exercise, the more calories you need to fuel it - fat alone can’t fuel a good, balanced workout, because it can’t convert to glycogen, and that’s what you need to power your muscles for any kind of resistance training. Otherwise your muscles will cannibalise themselves to fuel the workout. Cardio can burn fat or glycogen, but if you want to get healthy, fit and toned, not skinny-fat, you’ll want to pair your cardio with strength training (and always doing the strength training first, after a short warmup).
But more than that, it’s just about the numbers. It can take you ten minutes to burn off what it only takes ten seconds to consume. There’s a reason they say “you can’t outrun a bad diet”. You lose weight in the kitchen, not the gym.
Now, in terms of building fitness? That you absolutely do in the gym. You can have a high BMI and be fit as a fiddle, because your heart and lungs are in tip top shape and your muscles are strong - and I’m not even talking about bodybuilders or whatever here, even just normal people who happen to have a lot of weight to lose can get there. You can still be officially obese and be going to the gym five times a week (because you started off as a higher category of obesity), and just because your waistline isn’t where you want it to be doesn’t mean the exercise isn’t doing excellent things for you. Obviously muscle burn more calories at rest, so the bigger and stronger your muscles, the faster your metabolism will get, and the faster you’ll lose weight, and as you rightly say, every bit of exercise improves that calorie deficit, so your weight loss will increase there too. But far more than that, your health will be improving all the time. You will be strong, you will have great stamina, you will improve your heart and lung function, your blood pressure will be right in the middle of the green zone, you will sleep better and feel good in yourself because you’re full of endorphins. A fat person who works out regularly is, all things being equal, likely far healthier than a thin person who never does any exercise at all. So it’s absolutely worth it to work out regularly for anyone, whether you’re trying to lose weight or not.
Aetheriao@reddit
There’s also the issue of introducing exercise for weight loss without addressing diet can increase your calorie consumption. Exercising can stimulate your appetite so that 100cal walk ends with a 300cal snack, or people generally overestimate the calorie deficit and overeat as they’ve “earned it”.
Exercise is great and with 0 weight loss it’s still good to do and will prevent all sorts of health problems. But it is unlikely to cause significant weight loss without any other lifestyle changes. The biggest benefit is that it can help improve general health to the point you naturally exercise more. So if you don’t walk at all and drive everywhere when you feel stronger you’ll naturally make more health conscious decisions as you don’t get out of breath walking down the road or taking the stairs.
SuzLouA@reddit
Totally agree. Ex
HeartyBeast@reddit
Unfortunately, the evidence shows that while exercising is excellent for health in many ways, it's not particularly effective for weight-loss. You're much better just just thiking about what you eat.
wearezombie@reddit
Especially if you’re a small woman who works a sedentary job. My maintenance calories are 1.5k and I’m overweight.
It’s not hard eating say 1.2k, but it’s boring and really difficult concocting meals that are 400 calories, hit your macros and satisfy you while also being tasty. It takes so long to actually see any results that it’s not something I can stick to because I get so fed up. Long term it’s been much more sustainable increasing my daily movement with walks, runs and weights so I can fit a few dates as a snack or something like that into my allowance. Plus I can visually see “results” quicker because I tone quite quickly.
Wishmaster891@reddit
I think its good to exercise generally as its good For your body / mental health. Not sure i agree on the starving bit. Last year i lost a stone by being j. A 49@ calorie deficit, on days i went to the gym i had to eat around 100 calories extra otherwise the deficit was too much and it really affected my sleep.
So the deficit was about the same if i went to the gym or not.
guareber@reddit
But if you're on a calorie deficit and not physically active you'll be losing plenty of lean muscle mass as well (some studies have shown 40%). Better to do both.

I got one as a Christmas present. It’s the S1 treadmill/walking pad, I believe it was around £100. It wasn’t from Amazon though I don’t think.
Goes 6kph so fast enough for a brisk walk. I’ve never managed to get faster than 4.5kph yet as I’m short with small strides but even I find the small size of the walking area a bit daunting and think I’m going to slip off the back. Maybe it’s just a case of getting used to it and growing confidence. It’s rather heavy but does have wheels on the front end so you can tip it and roll it around. It says it must be stored flat, you can’t lean it on its side against a wall so consider storage. Should fit under a high enough sofa or bed.
Watch a video on the maintenance. Walking pads are prone to belt slip but from the videos if you catch it early enough and retighten it correctly, it should be fine.
cocacola999@reddit
I've got one. Work at home with an office job. It was about £100 and it's fine. I store it next to my standing desk. I'm a bit lazy with it, but good for doing while being forced to do HR training or long listen only meetings. However, mine takes a while to stop, so not the best when people ask me a question (it's loud enough to interfere with my mic)
Objective-Ad-585@reddit
If you have an RTX graphics card in your computer, you can use the RTX software to block out any background noise.
NuisancePenguin44@reddit
If you're not using it at a standing desk while working, just get a treadmill then at least you can have a jog or a run on it as well. That will be much better if you want to lose weight.

Yep they're great. I use mine while working from home with my standing desk. I tend to use it for meetings I'm either off camera or with colleagues 121 and they don't tend to mind. Go easy and make sure your set up works for you - in the beginning as some people get a bit dizzy
JaffaCakesCantLose@reddit
I got one off Marketplace for £50. It did gather dust for the first year until I got into a routine with it. It’s great that I can tuck it out of the way when it’s not in use.
It’s not as good a workout as a standard treadmill because of the length. I find it a little harder to use than a standard treadmill because there’s nothing to hold on to. If I try to walk too fast, my stride is too long and I’ll catch the end and trip 🤣. But I wouldn’t be without it.

I was going to buy one - but decided against it. I used to have a treadmill and used it for around a week before the novelty wore off. Now I just follow free YouTube workouts with a set of Aldi dumbbells. There’s loads which help you get your steps in- marching in the spot or dancing around. I’ve been doing 30 mins a day, I’m feeling fitter, and I actually look forward to my daily workout after work. If it ends up not giving the results I want then I will consider a walking pad but at the moment this is working great for me- and it’s free!
goodgod-lemon@reddit
Make sure you keep an eye on the weight limit - a lot of the cheap ones max out at 200-220 lbs.
Purple-Oil-9985@reddit
I was training for a race last year that fell in the winter months so I bought one that had high speeds for running also up to 10miles per hour. I bought it because of the weather - very bad ice where I live so I didn’t think I’d use it that often but it’s actually used quite a lot in our household between my husband and I. I highly recommend getting one.
LazyBeach@reddit
Which one did you buy?
lovesorangesoda636@reddit
I love mine.
Got a sit/stand desk so even I'm doing some dull spreadsheets I get on the pad, pop the eras tour on, and strut my way through the spreadsheet. Gets the work done and it feels less soul destroying 😂
lifeasiknowit-123@reddit
OP, I love mine. I would highly recommend getting one.
Chemicalpaca@reddit
I love my walking pad, used it nearly every day last year aiming to do 5-15km. I used mine at my standing desk and would play video games while using it. Managed to cover 2000 km on it over the year and lost 4.5 stone.
I actually struggled using it while working as I couldn't think and walk at the same time
LazyBeach@reddit
Which one did you buy?
iluvritalin@reddit
Yes but make sure you get one with a bar to steady yourself with, you might not need it but without I found I was constantly watching my feet!
Newreddituserw@reddit
I got one recently from home fitness code and I like it
Pros They are cheap to buy Weighs under 10 kg so easy to move it around Cons Quality is not great and not sure how long it will last
December126@reddit
I love mine, make sure to buy one that goes up to 12kmph, I made the mistake of first of all buying one that only went up to 8kmph which was fine when I first started but when I got a better stamina and wanted to properly run it wasn't good enough. Also, it really depends on where you live, they are very loud, even if you're just walking on it, anyone downstairs will hear everything so it's not suitable for if you live in a flat.
Content_Big8484@reddit
Checkout some of the fitness subs. The users there might have more info on whether it has any negative impact on the knees/joins or if it's low impact.
And then like the rest have mentioned, wait till Feb/march, you'll see a lot of them on marketplace.
Zs93@reddit
I hate using it for a long time so I literally do 5-10 min increments while I scroll on tiktok!
bethanyisla@reddit
I just got one online from decathlon by city sports for around £100, been using it a couple of weeks and it’s solid. I’m the same as you, 9-5 office job so just wanted to get the steps in. I’ve not found any issues with belt slipping which seemed to be a common thing with walking pads so touch wood good buy!
DrShadyBusiness@reddit
My mum has literally just got one deer run a5 pro. It's actually really really good, I was expecting something that was flimsy and low quality.
But I was surprised. Not on par with something you'd get at the gym. But if you're looking for something to use daily for 30min - 1hr while watching TV or whatever, it's great.
It's got some good safety features. Would recommend getting one of the mats too to lessen the noise. But even then it's not too loud while walking. Running will be noisy tho.
It's quite slim for what it is, we've put it where we used to keep the ironing board. Takes up about the same amount of space.
seadoubleyou73@reddit
Gain fitness in the gym, and lose weight in the kitchen. Much easier to not eat 300 calories than it is to walk for 90 minutes on a walking pad.
Serious_Escape_5438@reddit
Or do both?
seadoubleyou73@reddit
If you're able to. Although increased exercise can lead to increased appetite with some people so if the focus is losing weight then diet should be looked at first and adjusted inline with a sensible calorie deficient.
Serious_Escape_5438@reddit
Obviously if you have some kind of disability it's different but otherwise absolutely everyone should be doing some kind of physical activity, it's a fundamental factor for basic health, regardless of whether you're trying to lose weight. It's healthier to be overweight and active than thin and sedentary, generally.
seadoubleyou73@reddit
I never suggested not doing exercise. My comment was to point out that for weight loss (not fitness or health) it's simpler to reduce calories. If you scroll down the entire thread a lot of people are explaining the same thing and in more detail
Serious_Escape_5438@reddit
Yes I understand that, but I find many people take that as a reason for remaining completely sedentary. And I was just saying it doesn't have to be one or the other. Weight loss is nearly always more successful when it comes as part of a lifestyle change anyway. I don't find it very helpful to say not to bother with exercise because it doesn't burn that many calories.
seadoubleyou73@reddit
Once again, I never said not to bother with exercise. We're not disagreeing with each other. You have, possibly on purpose, misinterpreted my comment.
Serious_Escape_5438@reddit
Maybe it wasn't your intention, but that's how it sounded and how many people interpret such statements. I've seen lots of people on weight loss subs say "there's no point exercising because you need to run a marathon to burn a Mars bar". By stating that diet is simpler you're giving the impression that it's either/or. And you absolutely said that exercise increases appetite so some people shouldn't do it.
seadoubleyou73@reddit
It's about 12 mars bars per marathon. Why are you assuming everyone misinterpreted my comment when it was just you? No i'm not and no I didn't. You clearly have comprehension issues and are coming across as a pedantic autistic. Feel free to interpret any of this incorrectly, I can do this all day. Have you tried a nice warm bath and a cup of tea?
Arbernaut@reddit
We bought a cheap one off Amazon and has survived a couple of years of three people on the house doing their daily steps. Have even run on it, so I’d be inclined to recommend.
imoaq@reddit
I know a lot of people love them but I hated the one my partner bought, I walk kind of 'diagonally' and I found it so awkward to walk on because they are usually quite narrow. No matter how slow I put it on, I would eventually fall off because I don't step completely straight and would misjudge it. Also not good if you have long strides. My partner likes it though, so I think it's just personal!
PresidentGarvey@reddit
I ordered the UREVO one (I know there are hundreds of 'brands' out there that are all likely just made in the same place) but it had good reviews and wasn't ridiculously expensive. I like it, it's perfect for the nights this time of year when the last thing you want to do is go out in the cold and dark after a full day. My only regret is that it only goes up to 6km and doesn't incline, and I was aiming to be able to lightly jog on mine when I wanted to push myself. I can do it, but would like it to go a little faster. I've also noticed that after owning it for a month or so, it takes a little while to 'warm up' at max speed and the track will stick for a fraction of a second which feels a bit jarring. It also doesn't take into account weight/sex/height or anything in terms of calories burnt as there's nothing programmable on the display. It's a good starter one though and at least I know how what I'd like if I were looking to upgrade
Walrus-Living@reddit
I used to work with a lot of bodybuilders about 10 years ago and pretty much all of them had walking pads or those little cycling versions. Used especially when they were on a lean down for a competition and needed to do extra cardio. Most were in the gym at 6am on a stairmaster or treadmill and back again after work to do weight training but they were off a mindset that every extra bit helped and that if they’re working or sitting at home watching a bit of TV or doing the ironing then they may as well get some extra cardio in too…. i know a few female runners that don’t feel safe going out in the dark in winter and keep themselves moving indoors with these pads too…. I say every little helps and if this is what can help you, then go for it….
Ki1664@reddit
Look on Fb market place as loads of people try to get rid of them after realising they don’t end up using the

Wide-Extreme-6835@reddit
Totally get that! A walking pad can be a great solution for those dark, chilly nights when outside isn’t safe!
Ych_a_fi_mun@reddit
Diet change is how you lose weight, but any increase in physical activity will be good for overall health and wellbeing
MasterFrost01@reddit
Definitely, I love mine. I did get a more premium one with a larger surface area and more features though. I think it was about £250. I used to have a rowing machine and a treadmill but I got rid of them and kept the walking pad.
I use it while watching TV in the evening. If I go at a steady pace I don't even register that I'm exercising, I'm focused on the TV.
Will you lose weight? That depends. The only way to lose weight is to expend more calories in a day than you consume. The best way to do this is to modify your diet. Cardio increases your energy expenditure for the day, but your body will increase your hunger levels to try and get you to consume the lost calories. So, you will still need to make sure you're in a calorie deficit.
gtasean@reddit
Last year I bought one of the “WalkingPad” branded ones and really like it. The main reason I went for one instead of the many cheaper alternatives was because for storage it’s fantastic as you can fold it in half.
It doesn’t go at fast running speeds but they’re not designed to. I mainly wanted it for walking indoors and it works great.
Extension_Avocado366@reddit
I got a stepper instead because I was worried about the carpet with a walking pad and it's fantastic! The days I don't get 10k, I get it easily by going on the stepper with a film on.
EnvironmentalMine194@reddit
I brought a DeerRun during the Black Friday Deals but it was more than a £100 - £189 and I thought that was cheap for the quality. I use it during crappy weather and evenings, then go for an actual run on my days off.
Dapperscavenger@reddit
Regardless of weight loss possibilities, adding all that extra movement into your day will absolutely help you prevent back pain and joint stiffness as you get older. Sedentary jobs destroy the body.
itsheadfelloff@reddit
I think they are, especially for your use. I had one for 3.5 years before it died, bought just before lockdown. It was nice just whacking something foreign on the telly and just walking and reading the subtitles. I do about 7k steps in an hour, the one I bought was about £180.
AlGunner@reddit
10k steps is about 1.5 hours or more of walking. Doing that on one of these things is going to get very boring. Youre better off buying a used treadmill that you can run on instead.
Boredpanda31@reddit
Not everyone can run, so while yes walking may be boring (it really is), it might be the only thing some people can do and walking, even in the house, is better than nothing. 1.5hours can also be broken up over a day, it doesn't have to be a straight 1.5 hour walking session.
AlGunner@reddit
The OP said they want to do home workouts. There is nothing to suggest they cant build up to a run. You can walk on a treadmill to start off with a build up to running. A treadmill can do what a walking pad does and go a lot faster.
Boredpanda31@reddit
But you mentioned nothing about building up? Just said walking boring, get a treadmill and run instead..
You're right they said they want to do home workouts and spoke about a walking pad. Maybe they specifically mentioned a walking pad because they don't want to / can't run.
AlGunner@reddit
And youre being extremely pedantic.
Dry_Yogurt2458@reddit
Couch to 5k
I have seen some very big people start that and finish 9 weeks later jogging 5k non stop and loving it. The apps are free and the programme works. You Start with walking intersped with jogging for short periods and finish with a non stop 3.1 mile jog.
ExoticExchange@reddit
Just go outside.
GoshDarnBlast@reddit
Not everyone lives somewhere where that’s a feasible solution.
ExoticExchange@reddit
I tend to disagree, or at least if you’re serious about it there’s ways round it.
If you’re worried about daylight and safety if you travel to a 9-5 you arrive at the workplace at 8:30 and do a 30 minute walk before work, do 30minutes at lunchtime and 30 minutes afterwards. That will have you very close to 10000 steps already. A walking pad is an absolutely not worth it purchase. I doubt very much OP will come home after work at like 6pm do the cooking and life admin and then want to hop on the pad for two hours. You need to embed more steps into life as it currently is not designate a need to get on a piece of equipment as a chore. If you want to make this a successful habit of 10k steps a day you need the steps to occur more naturally.
GoshDarnBlast@reddit
If you “tend to disagree” you’re being rather blinkered, what I said is a fact, not an opinion. Some people live in not so great places, or places with poorly maintained pavements, or somewhere rural without pavements and narrow lanes. They may work in an industrial estate type area. Not everyone has access to good, suitable outdoor spaces.
ExoticExchange@reddit
If you live in an area with narrow lanes and no pavements you live in the countryside and can walk across fields and public footpaths. You can also walk safely on the road that’s not actually a reason to not go outside.
You can also stop somewhere on the way to work for these walks it doesn’t have to be the workplace itself that was just an example. You’re merely offering excuses not facts. The fact is if you want to do 10k steps daily they can be achieved outside and if you want to make it a fixed habit they should be. These sort of targets need to be done as part of the daily routine and not become a chore on a walking pad. Losing weight requires lifestyle change, a magic walking pad is not the answer.
GoshDarnBlast@reddit
You’re in a privileged position if you think everyone has access to these areas. Like I already said. They may be accessible to you, but are not available to everyone.
ExoticExchange@reddit
Everyone has access to outside that’s not a privileged position, you’re just being silly. You can offer excuses about why someone might not want to walk in certain areas, and that’s fine, but all they are are excuses. Because if you travel for work you can travel for walking, if your home area is so inhospitable to walking.
No_Preference_2761@reddit
It was definitely worth it for me. I will happily go for walks in the summer in the evening but I live in a vaguely dodgy area so definitely not walking about in the winter in the dark! Also great when it's raining and you don't want to get soaking wet!
I initially listened to music, but then I would put it in front of the telly (mines got wheels on one end for ease of moving) and get engrossed in a show so I'd end up doing more than I intended :)
I don't use it as much now because I'd lost the weight and was keeping it off, but some has crept back on now lol so it'll be coming back out again shortly!
BrownSpartan@reddit
Try those slim/foldable threadmils on Facebook marketplace or Gumtree.
Glittering-Error8822@reddit
Exercise has many physical and mental health benefits, and anything that gets you moving around more will be a good thing, so it's probably worth a try.
If your main aim is to lose weight though, you will probably be disappointed, unless you make changes to your diet at the same time. The saying 'you can't outrun a bad diet' is very true in most cases (believe me, I've tried!)
max1304@reddit
I’ve not heard of a ‘walking pad’ until this. What is the difference between a walking pad and a treadmill?
fckituprenee@reddit
It's just the running deck section with no permanent siderails - some have a bar you can attach for stability. Usually there's no option for incline, so there's not much height to it. These things mean you can store them much more easily than a treadmill.
_kattitude@reddit
I got one last year when I was in the depths of finishing up my PhD and it made a huge difference. Great not slumping over in the chair all day everyday. Highly recommend!
Aggravating-Ant-6767@reddit
I use mine to do some steps if it’s raining outside. If it’s not raining, walking outside is far more enjoyable
Appropriate_Trader@reddit
When it comes to losing weight the biggest change you can make is in the kitchen.
If you want to gain strength then lift heavy things more.
If you want to improve cardio then raise your heart rate more and more often.
If you want to lose weight then eat less.
There are caveats to all of those and it’s slightly more nuanced but honestly not much.
A walking pad will most likely improve your cardiovascular capabilities more than it’ll help you lose weight but it obviously won’t hurt.
Aetheriao@reddit
They’re best and most likely to be used if you wfh with a standing desk.
They also need a lot more stability than a normal treadmill so it depends on how much weight you need to lose and if you have any gait or balance issues. A good test is if you can walk up the stairs without using a handrail you’ll probably be fine. But they’re terrible for some people as it’s a fall risk, and most of the ones with an actual bar are so flimsy they’re really just to access the settings easier not proper stabilisation.
The easiest way to get 10k steps in in office is to not use a lift and walk to work or park a set distance from work to get a mandatory walk in.
BigDumbGreenMong@reddit
I got one of those folding Walking Pads and use it regularly - I put it in front of the TV and walk on max speed for an hour while I'm watching a show. (Protip, noise cancelling headphones block out the treadmill noise so you can hear the tv better.)
Once I got used to doing the full hour comfortably, I started wearing a backpack with a 10kg weight in to make it more challenging.
Combined with intermittent fasting (well, skipping breakfast basically) it helped me drop 5kg in around a month last November.
Gimmee-cReddit@reddit
I usethe deerrun and it is fantastic to get steps in during winter months! I use this with my fitbit to track my calorie deficit (alongside a spreadsheet to figure out how many minutes on the walking pad is needed to meet my deficit)
Also, Amazon sucks. Please refrain from using them.
babysfatwrist@reddit
Agree with Deeerun, l have one and it’s great. Also agree on Amazon…they absolutely suck!!

My sister does 10k steps a day on hers and loves it, she highly recommends it if you don't have any nice walks round your bit.
Iasc123@reddit

You'd rather walk, on the spot? Get a stationary bike and be serious...
creeperedz@reddit
I got one on amazon for about £100. I used it heaps until I got a dog so now I dont really need it. But I loved that I could watch TV or read while getting some light exercise. I'd say they're worth it if you have the space to leave it out as I found it was more of a chore to move than actually use it since they're rather heavy.
I_waz_Perce@reddit
I love mine. I WFH and have a very bad back. I can't sit for long, and standing for 8+ hours a day was not working either. The best solution is to walk in between and break it up. It works for me.
Money_Afternoon6533@reddit
I bought one a few years ago, went for the more premium option and bought from John Lewis as there’s a bit more guarantee I guess. Best money I’ve spent, use it daily during my working hours.
Aggravating_Pain7116@reddit
Just going to say I deliver a tonne of these for parcelforce, (Amazon sends them through us because their precious drivers can't deal with the weight and size) I feel as though it won't belong before you'll be able to find these being sold by people who don't use them anymore
With the amount being purchased new, the secondhand market will be flooded with them soon
Baggins_1420@reddit
Got this one on Amazon renewed with offer - originally £120 but with offer etc £68. Reasoned for that price it would be a good tester.
Pleasantly surprised but you do need somewhere to store it. My long term plan is a standing desk.
Quite narrow and not good if you have a long stride but it's not meant for professional training.
If you can get a used off of Gumtree then great, but for the price I paid, it's worth it.
PS it syncs to Apple Watch as well.

Start a couch to 5k programme. 30 minutes 3 times per week for 9 weeks. You start with walking intersped with very short periods of jogging and finish 9 weeks later with a 3.1 mile continuous run. I have seen some very unfit and large people have success with this programme.
The apps are free and it gets you outdoors.

Worked for me as a 6’6” 22st unit, even though I hate running I ended up managing a 28 minute best at park runs, admittedly I was out sprinted to the finish by a 10 year old girl on that one. Worked right up until I destroyed my pelvis in an unrelated cycling pot hole accident. I really need to revisit it.
raddit95@reddit
I got mine from Facebook marketplace basically brand new for a fraction of the price. It’s good but the novelty wears off after a while and I have found it hard to stay motivated. It’s handy for rainy days when you don’t want to go for a walk outside. I usually would watch tv or listen to a podcast/audiobook to pass the time whilst using it. Overall I would say it’s worth it if you can stay motivated to use it regularly!

https://amzn.eu/d/aBMKImr HUANUO Walking Pad Treadmill with 5% Incline.
I have this one and think it's fantastic! It was about £80 when I bought it but there are a few under £100 and can't imagine they're much different, just get one with an incline option too. 5% is enough for me.
I work from home and was getting about 3,000 steps but now I easily do 10,000-15,000 with 3 or 4 30 min sessions on this. I did combine it with a standing desk though so I can still work and walk
Chardeemacdennis2@reddit
I bought one from Amazon and didn’t really like it. It was louder than I expected and just felt a bit clunky and not very smooth. I think I paid around £150. Id just get a treadmill and then you have the option to jog a bit if you want to at some point too!
annawhowasmad@reddit
I got one a cheap £90ish one off Amazon at the start of November and it’s been brilliant. I don’t use it with a standing desk, just slide it under the sofa and pull it out to use in the front of the TV. If I’m watching telly or playing video games I can walk for like 90 minutes and barely notice it. My daily distance walked has tripled.
I will say, despite me walking at a much faster pace on the walking pad than I do in the wild, due to the lack of incline (mine’s got an optional slight one but not much) I burn the same amount of calories in an hour of 8km/hr treadmill walking as I do in 5km/hr outdoor walking, and my Fitbit tells me it doesn’t raise my heart rate anywhere near as much. I like to track my distance, so it doesn’t matter that much to me, but I was surprised when I compared the Fitbit stats.
yellowvandan@reddit
Have a mobvoi one I use with my standing desk.
I find them good in some situations, mainly anything where you are watching something e.g watching a webinar, all hands meeting etc.
I struggle to use it when trying to anything that involves typing, design, anything requiring finer movements really due to how much you move around even at slow speed.
They are quite noisy too so possibly not something you could use in a meeting (unless you are mainly watching). It could also be distracting for others watching you bob around if you have the camera on.
I find I go through weeks of using it a lot then months of not using it. It does help me get my steps in when i do use it though.

Yes but if you intend to use it while working, you also need a stand up desk.

I’ve just bought one - Urevo brand off Amazon as it’s highly reviewed. I thought walking pads were a bit of a scam but I’ve found I simply don’t move around enough during the day WFH, even with deliberate walks. I’m hoping that slow walking at my standing desk will help me feel better during the day.

My wife bought one in December and I’ve been using it. I found the trick is to find the settings that are best for you. I struggled for a few days until I found that going onto the higher speed option was much better for my walking pace.
SciFiEmma@reddit
I'd pay the extra to get one with variable incline that goes to at least 8 km/h. Go for one thats sturdy (so supports weight subtantially heavier than you) and get the highest powered engine you can run to. Then you have a chance of a) getting a sweat on and b) it lasting.
I think this is a buy cheap, buy twice scenario.
