Why does everyone drive so close together nowadays?

I passed my test just under a decade ago and I was always taught two seconds behind the car in front unless it’s wet etc. and I understand that there are way more vehicles on the road since even just a decade ago but is it not still safest to have at least a two second gap? Is this not taught anymore? When I first passed my test it was the occasional AH that would drive up your bumper but now it’s more people than not that do it. This is a genuine question, I don’t understand :(
