Ashtrays, relics of the past

My folks managed a business in a tourist town when I was a kid (inherited, manager for my grandmother). It had a restaurant attached to it that we leased out, but we were responsible for major upkeep. When I was about 12 we did a full remodel of the place and it sort of marks a point in my mind when the ashtray thing changed. The restaurant was infamous for its dinner plate sized gold flecked clear glass ashtrays that sat on every table and got polished daily. You know what I'm talking about. When my parents decided to remodel they had to plan for *the smoking section.* Ultimately they decided it wasn't as important as it used to be, so we removed a wall and that key us install booths with bark covered logs for beams with several branches still attached giving the place a forest cabin feel that turned out really nice (90s). But the ashtrays were out! When we did a grand reopening that was the first thing mentioned in the town newspaper (yes, it made the front page, it was such a small town). It was about that time that all the cigarette vending machines disappeared (outlawed) and just a couple years earlier several influential families in the town pushed to have open alcohol container laws passed and actually enforced (oh the day drunks I remember navigating around walking alone among the crowds of tourists when I was like 7-8). And we got curb and gutters in the town too. All when we lost the stinking ashtrays.
