For those who moved to France: what helped you choose your location ?

Hi all,
For expats who moved to France (or are planning to): what helped you decide where to live ? Especially for those living in rural areas.
Was it lifestyle, cost of living, schools, job opportunities, climate, local community…?
And what was the most confusing or stressful part of the process for you?
I’m curious to hear real experiences.

I moved to France from Canada last year. I chose Paris because it's the city I'm most familiar with, and I'm fairly accustomed to being here. I lived here for a year in the past, and I've been visiting Paris for over 20 years.
The thing that attracts me most to Paris is that the city has lots of amenities, great public transit, bike sharing service. I prefer to live without needing a car.
I rented an apartment when I first arrived, but next week I'm moving into an apartment in the 10eme that I just bought.
The most confusing and stressful parts about moving here are all very little things:

I also noticed the cheap, flimsy quality of most items. Wonder what that's about?

This is always an issue in Europe.
Ah, the Irish paradox. You need a job to get an apartment (an address), you need a non-hostel address to get a bank account, and you need a bank account to get a job (they require direct deposit details during onboarding).

If you’re interested in my experience, I just wrote a piece about how we chose our location in SW France here: https://open.substack.com/pub/thejuliadouglas/p/six-questions/ We moved here from Scotland 9 years ago. I’ve included a few ideas for you to think about. Good luck!

This is a very individual thing. What is your circumstance? Are you retired? Do you have kids? What field are you in? for me:
Retired early, no kids -- moved to rural area near Avignon because (a) cheap housing (number one thing) (b) near cycling destination.
The job situation outside of Paris is in general poor. The wages are lower than you will see in the US but the cost of living is also lower. Also if your French is poor you will struggle.

Avignon is a really pretty city. How is life there where you live near it?

A lot of crime. Beautiful countryside. I like the cycling. I don't know. My French sucks. It would probably be a different experience if I spoke fluent French. Frankly I wasn't looking for much and it ticks the boxes.

Not surprised about the crime situation.. maybe in time you will be fluent!

I moved here to be with my partner. Even though it's a big city, there are not really any opportunities and I did struggle a lot because I didn't knew the language at first..
when the time comes, we will leave this sinking ship behind.

Erm a job ?

Distance to parents in law, house prices and major multinational businesses in town. (In the end we realised that the Dordogne wasn’t a weekend trip to Brittany, so looked a bit further north)
Most confusing? French consulates not having automatic access to French town halls to get a copy of a French wedding certificate (reissue <90 days old needed for a visa) - had to go myself to pick it up in person before returning to the consulate.
