What were ram prices like before this current boom?

I last built a PC back in 2015 for gaming when I was a teenager, which was the last time I really kept up with PC hardware. Since then I have drifted away from gaming as I have gotten older and ended up using PCs mainly for work and study. I bought a laptop early last year, but that did not really pull me back into the PC parts world.
Recently my work has started pushing me toward a desktop that is more powerful than my laptop so it can handle heavier workloads. Because of that, I have been paying attention to PC pricing again and honestly got a bit of a shock.
In late October and early November I was eyeing off a system and was seriously considering buying it. However, because Black Friday was so close, I figured it made sense to wait and see what deals would be available.
The build I was looking at had an R7-9800X3D, 32GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, and an RTX 5080. At the time it was listed for $2,788. When I checked again during Black Friday in November, that same system had jumped to almost $4,000 (the cheapest anywhere after some extensive research) and has stayed around that price since, which was pretty surprising given it was meant to be a sale period.
After digging a bit deeper, I have seen a lot of discussion about RAM prices increasing, which seems like it could explain part of the jump. That made me curious what RAM prices were like before this current boom. Were the late October prices already elevated, or is this a more recent spike?
I am in Australia, so all prices are in AUD.

We didn't all think DDR5 was worth it back then. Some of us came from DDR3 or slower DDR4 systems.

pre built PC's are the worst, they have 1 or 2 decent pieces of hardware and then the rest is absolute bottom of the barrel. for instance they likely paired that CPU you mentioned with something like a $105 A620.
places like that love to pair a $600 cpu with some unbranded mainboard that was purchased in bulk from DHgate

nvidiot@reddit
Nah, when I bought it, it was about a week or two before OpenAI announcing they were gonna buy up all the RAM capacity, starting the RAM apocalypse. The price I bought them at that point was normal price for it in my country; 64 GB x2 6000 CL34 kits were pretty new (older 64 GB x2 kits were slower and had significantly higher CL timing).
fastrail@reddit
I actually wanted to buy this kit as an upgrade for around the same price 2 months ago, but not enough money at the time.
Thankfully mine is still 64gb but mannnn never thought the price would go this crazy. Wish I had the money back then lol.

In the UK, RAM is roughly about four times more expensive than it was mid October.
Prices stared increasing slowly at the very, very end of October and Mid November is when the prices started rising significantly.
denchikmed@reddit
They are not "out of stock" they just removed them from the websites. They are just holding onto them so they can sell the ones that are priced higher.
MasterofSquat@reddit
Yup it's insane glad I built last year, a bit sad I stuck at a 32GB kit but that should be more than enough for the foreseeable future.

I'm in Europe. I bought 1 year before the boom. My sticks are ddr5 16gx2 32gb l40. They cost me, as a pack 125 euros and some spare scents.

jkahn923@reddit
Bought 48GB 6400 DDR5 in Jan 24 for $170. Now goes for about $600 or more. That's about 3.5x increase. This is worse than the GPU markup craze. Its crazy to say that I just bought a 5080Ti for about the same price as the cost of 64GB of ram.
Dub_Monster@reddit
It's crazy! I bought DDR4 2x32GB in late 2023 for 170€, now the same set is almost 500€. I also found a receipt from late 2020 for 1x8GB stick, 45€.. Now similar one costs bit over 100€

My 32GB 16x2 DDR4 3600 cost me £75, it sells right now for 199-250. The 16GB RAM I had in my old setup is worth £30 max and sells for 95-110 right now.
The 32GB 5600 DDR5 I did not purchase last year for my upgrade was selling for £130, now it is £350-400 minimum everywhere. It is madness.
InfiniteHorizon23@reddit
My maxed out kit was £649 before the craze, now it's worth over £2500...
Death_Pokman@reddit
Yeah, because of AI the big datacenters need more and more RAM and starting in november the prices just skyrocketed.....before a RAM that costed 100 bucks now costs 400-500.....I'm seeing RAM prices that previously were a whole ass computer, sadly reports say that this will be going on even in 2027, so good luck to anyone who wants to build/buy a PC in the next 2 years lol
ApprehensiveYak5360@reddit
Most likely the prices will just never come down. Exact same as the GPU situation. They'll increase the prices very quickly if they can, but they will never reduce them. PCs are just forever going to be very expensive now if you want anything remotely high end.
Death_Pokman@reddit
It's not even the high end, but low and mid PC's too, btw I think RAM will come down cuz it's just ridiculous currently, especially in the low end area, a RAM stick alone costs more than all the other parts combined, GPU included.....

It's very insane right now.
I was planning to upgrade all parts except PSU and GPU last summer but then decided to do other stuff like getting a nice mountain bike and new smart watch.
Now when I bought a bigger 1440p monitor and looked the parts for the new PC build, I was totally shocked
I did knew that at least DDR5 prices had gone up but basically all parts have gone up excluding ATX/M-ATX cases.
I have to just pay up and cry or wait for the prices to come down but I don't believe in that they never will be in a level that they used to be.
Besides there will most likely be shortages of those parts further on and that is one thing to consider.

Average ram prices when I built my current PC in 2015 were $25-$50 for basic 4x4-8s, $50-$100 for higher end 4x8s and $100-$150 for factory overclocked 4x16-32s (nobody bought that shit unless they were running 3D modelling software).
I'm about to rip the guts outta this thing and replace everything BC it's starting to have problems, and I'm not looking forward to the new price points for GPUs and RAM. I dropped $3K back then, but it's probably gonna look more like $5K to do that again. Thankfully my new engineering job should be able to swing that kind of dough within 2 months.

I hope you learnt a lesson here that always buy what you need and don't wait for a deal. Again if you want to build a PC, your best bet is buying a CPU+MB+RAM combo and get your GPU as fast as possible because the prices would go up.
Aarnay3t@reddit
I think the sudden boom in RAM prices is due to their increasing rarity, as AI companies are monopolising RAM and buying it all up for their servers. A prime example of what happens when corporations are given too much money and power.

Early 2025, I built a race sim rig, followed by another gaming PC. I started with 32GB of RAM for the sim rig, but a month or so later, the 5xxx series graphics cards came out and I had FOMO, so I upgraded the video card and then built another system out of my 4070 and 32GB of RAM. I was hesitant to go wit 64GB of RAM for the sim rig given it was \~$250 and I knew I didn't need that much RAM, but it also meant I wouldn't need to upgrade for a long time. Now I am glad I did it and glad I got my 32GB while it was still cheap as well. If I were building a computer right now, I'm not sure what route I would go with some of the current pricing.

If your work is pushing you to a desktop, then prices shouldn't matter since work should be paying for it.
TheDarkrayne@reddit
When they say "my work" they don't necessarily mean a company that employs them. They could be freelance, a contactor, a content creator, a volunteer, etc.
dogstardied@reddit
I think the thinking still applies. If paid work is necessitating an upgrade, then it will also pay it off. That doesn’t mean infinite budget, but it does mean you don’t have to think about the purchase from a personal savings point of view but rather from a business-growth mindset and the additional revenue it could bring in.
Biking_dude@reddit
Can use the same logic to everything. Why not spend $100k on a 10 year old used Toyota if it's just for work.
CivilProcess7150@reddit
I think the point here is that if it's for work, then it's a necessity and in that case it doesn't really matter. It still sucks, but you can't really do anything about it and therefore it's pointless to stress about it. Only thing you can do is to prepare yourself for the worst and try to save some money to make yourself a financial pillow do that you can keep doing your work. At least that's my approach as I'm a SWE working as a contractor.

Prices really started climbing in September/October. Before that, prices were probably the best they'd been in ages. For example, in early 2025 (February or March) you could buy a 16GB (2x8GB) kit of DDR4 3600MHz for as low as $25 USD. 32GB of DDR4 was typically around $50-60. And, before the prices skyrocketed, I saw 32GB of DDR5 6000MHz for as low as $75. Those rock bottom prices wouldn't have been the fancier kits or necessarily from the A-Tier companies, but neither were they naked PCBs from some sketchy no-name Chinese company. Prices, even on DDR4, are now at least 4 times as much.

Wow! I had no idea it was so bad. Fortunately, I built a system for my son in 2024. I got 2 sets of Team Group T-Create Expert ram when they were on sale last year. A 64GB set for $165, and a 96GB set for $220. And I thought it was expensive then! I was going to wait until after I got the GPU’s to get the “cheaper” components, but so glad I got everything else first… I got the 64GB set to pair with the 9800X3D and a 4080 super for a portable SFF gaming build, and the 96GB set for a full size stationary desktop with 9950X3D and a 5090 to power an LG 45”. SFF is done and gaming on its 17” Asus portable monitor, and now the only thing left is a 5090 for the full size editing rig. I’m saving up now for when the ProArt 5090 releases, hopefully later this year. Then I should be satisfied for a long while. I’d like to bump up the desktop to 128GB to occupy all 4 RAM slots, but not right now!! I’ve been planning another build, an HTPC that I’d swap RAM into, but that whole build is on halt until things calm down. I may piece together some parts that haven’t climbed in price yet, I’m just glad to be on something new! Up until a few months ago I was working and gaming on an i7-6700k Mini-ITX based system, with an EVGA Classified 980ti, 32GB of RAM, with an Intel U.2 Drive and a 2TB 3.5” HDD, so multiple board mounted M.2’s are so much nicer to work with!

16 MB (yes, MEGAbytes) was around $500 in the mid-'90s, and that isn't adjusted for inflation (over $1000 adjusted for inflation). While 4MB was more than adequate for Windows 3.1, it was the bare minimum for Windows 95, and 16MB was considered ideal (much like 32GB is today). From a historical perspective, we just came off an all-time low in memory prices. I think I paid $200 to $300 for 4MB in 1993, but it was worth it to stop the Win 3.1 swap file from thrashing.

New ram prices (USD) hit a low for DDR4 1.5-2 years ago ($1-2/gb for a good deal) and a low for DDR5 ($2-3/gb for a good deal) about a year ago.
Unfortunately, computer component prices tend to fluctuate in price independent of each other, so getting the best deals and/or avoiding paying higher prices requires you to buy parts at different times.
I remember something similar happened with ram prices, I think around 2010, where ram was super cheap, or in some cases free after rebate, but it only lasted for 6 months to a year and was back up to $3-4/gb or whatever it was after.

I'm in the US, so that's my perspective.
Before all this, you can easily find 32GB (2x16) kit of DDR5-6000 CL30 RAM kits for around $90-100 any day of the week. Potentially less if there's a sale. More if you want RGB or a different color or whatnot.
Looking at Newegg today, you'd be paying at least $350-400 for something similar.

Oh man. I was nearly in the same boat as you. Late September to Early October was when I bit the bullet to upgrade. I nearly talked myself into waiting to see the sells, after all I didn't NEED it. I am so glad I jumped when I saw the specific kit of ram I wanted, a 64GB kit of OLOy Blade 6400 CL 32, for $160 USD. Looks like the cheapest kit at that speed and capacity right now is around $700 USD. Again I am SOOOO glad I tend not to be the type of person who strongly revolves around waiting for sales for purchases and always trying to get the best deal.
As for exactly when it started. Definitely by late October. I remember a few weeks after I had upgraded and parted out my old system laughing about the fact that had I waited to sell my old parts I would have gotten a lot more for my RAM. But by that point it had already gotten ridiculous so am pretty sure it started Early October, though at that point it may not have been obvious that it was more than a fluctuation. But by Late October/Early November prices had basically doubled or close to it if I recall correctly.

Honestly in Australia best time to buy components were late September and early October. Mwave site had spend 200$ get 20$ off, spend 500$ get 60$ off and spend 900$ and get 120$ off. The site also had a lot of products on sale.
I was saving up for November but saw the promotion and I bought motherboard/cpu/ram back then, lucky me. Was hoping for a nvidia 5080 super but it doesn’t seem likely or won’t be announced until later this year and price increase. Got a 3080 so I can go 2 years without an upgrade but I probs just suck up the price and hope 60 series has more vram if it’s gonna cost more.
Still back then I did buy a 9950x3d because of the promo and sales it came down to 980$ from 1300$. I also bought a switch 2 Mario kart bundle and gskill trident z5 neo royal 6000 cl28 32gb ram. The ram was on sale down to 265$ from 340$ or something and I bundled that with the switch 2 bundle for 759$ to gain the 900$ promo so I got another 120$ off. So ultimately I bought that ram kit for 206$ and looking at listing the same ram kit is going between 1000$-1400$ depending on site.
If you’re needing to buy a pc now, I’ll highly recommend building it yourself and buying cpu/motherboard/ram combo off pc case gear. They have a beat the ram increase promo going on and you’ll be saving 300-900$ depending on the combo. Some even come with a ssd.
Still it’s going to be expensive the cheapest bundle is 1799$ and it comes with ASUS TUF R7 7800X3D 32GB 2TB AIO Starter Bundle there’s another for 1899$ but it’s 9950x3d and only cpu/motherboard/ram not the others.
Even if you shopped around and found the components cheaper then pc case gear it won’t be close to those prices plus you’d be spending a ton on shipping between websites.
kmkm2op@reddit
It's barely cheaper than buying the parts individually from multiple sites (it uses it's own inflated price on some items to make it seem better than it is). Buying value parts standalone is cheaper and you get a tlc ssd>qlc but lose on pcie 5.0 ×16 slot and AIO (which you can get by paying a bit more than the bundle). And with buying parts alone you can save another 120$ by buying cheaper ram which doesn't matter too much with an x3d tbh, so you can drop below the bundle with pcie 5.0×16 while having the exact components you want. It's not a bad choice but it certainly isn't the end all.

In August I bought 32 gigs of 6000 MHz/CL36 DDR5 for around 110 euro. Now, the exact same RAM on the exact same site costs 550 euro.

Last April I bought an 8GB Crucial DDR4 SODIMM for £12 on Amazon, currently that same stick is £62.
Last February I bought Kingston fury 32GB (2x16) DDR5 PnP SODIMM for £76, currently on Amazon the closest I can find is a few multiples of that.
That said, what are the terms of your employment? I ask because traditionally I'd expect an employer to supply the necessary equipment unless you had some kind of deal e.g. WfH or RtO. If you do need to buy, maybe look at tax options to reduce at least some of the cost or see if you can get it through your employer at a discount.
Maybe also look second hand at old workstations, although sellers have probably caught on to this or still look at laptops unless you specifically need a desktop e.g. better cooling, expandability, etc. in case there's a deal somewhere.

You can pick any product in Google Shopping and see the price fluctuations.
I can't paste an image of it, but pick any product and (on desktop) you can click Price History.
Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB DDR5 Memory went from $219 to $735 AUD. The uptick started in October and was very quick to reach the current price.

Got my G.Skill Royal 96GB (2x48GB) 6400C32 for 400 USD back in like Feb25. Now seems to have tripled in price, if it can be found at all.
