Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw. Who was your households network news anchor?

Dan was the man 90% of the time but I liked all three.
KinkMountainMoney@reddit
Jennings. If it was serious Sam Donaldson or Ted Koppel might show up. God help us if it was all three.
karaloveskate@reddit
Dan Rather.
SodaGrump@reddit
Seeing old clips and hearing his voice just makes me feel safe.
Grand-Scale-1915@reddit
In the 80’s I was at a friend’s house and Dan Rather came on tv. Her Dad got up and left the room abruptly. It was odd- we had all just been talking and joking around. The girl then explained her Dad had seen Dan Rather (war journalist) in Vietnam take an evac spot on a helicopter instead of making space for a wounded soldier. I’ve never been able to watch him since then.
uncertia@reddit
Definitely Dan. My parents still to this day are all CBS all the time.
ElectricLego@reddit
I haven't kept up with Steady lately but it was pretty good. Level-headed as one might expect from the man, may he carry on for many years to come
https://steady.substack.com/
Perdendosi@reddit
Our local CBS affiliate's news was the best in the market (and had better ratings than the NBC and ABC affiliates, combined), so we watched Dan because he was the lead up to the 6 o'clock local news.
PenelopeRupert@reddit
Us too; my dad would watch Andy Griffith, then the local news, then Dan Rather. Or maybe Andy was on in between, who’s to say.
Sensitive-Review-712@reddit
That's the same reason we were a Dan Rather house. My mom preferred our local CBS anchors to ABC, and our NBC wasn't really local.
tarzanacide@reddit
I grew up in Texas so it was always dan rather.
leeloocal@reddit
My parents were from Texas, so we always watched whatever network he was on.

Peter Jennings. No question

FernX02@reddit
My grandma and I watched him for hours when he covered 9/11. He was amazing.
Strange-Insurance848@reddit
I didn’t have a tv but listened to him on the radio and I’ll never forget it.
Prior-Grapefruit7662@reddit
Yeah, it was me and him right after 9/11 for days
trustme1maDR@reddit
I had just moved to a new town on 9/11 and basically had no one to talk to or be with. Peter really got me through. I will always be grateful to him for that. RIP.
FernX02@reddit
I love that. His voice was very calming.
Unpainted-Fruit-Log@reddit
I still remember him like a steady captain at the helm after 9/11. I think he pulled something like 36 hours straight.
ZealousidealPound460@reddit
He was married 4 times???

He used to drive Dan Harris (now the 10% happier guy) nuts. Gave him panic attacks and all.
I also remember Jennings smoking while reading the news.
ToeJam_SloeJam@reddit
He talked about finally quitting smoking but the stress of 9/11 pushed him back to it. Our whole house mourned when he passed away.
Yankee6Actual@reddit
And Frank Reynolds before him.

When I was really young, Peter Jennings was my family's main anchor of choice, but sometimes we had Dan Rather on. As a teenager, I gravitated toward Tom Brokaw for a while, but looking back I think Dan was the best of the lot.
CatLadyAM@reddit
My family just read the local newspaper…
phillysleuther@reddit
Tom Brokaw until our NBC and CBS switched stations in the 90s. Then it was Peter Jennings.
WarpGremlin@reddit
In our house we watched the local ABC station's 6 o'clock news because they were out of Sarasota rather than Tampa
Network news was all Tom Brokaw on NBC.
Then it was over to CBS for Wheel and Jeopardy.
phun-key@reddit
Peter Jennings had GOAT-level delivery with a sprinkle of Canadian inflection.
MuddyPig168@reddit

Extreme-Guitar-9274@reddit
Tom Brokaw.
Speaking of, was anyone in the NYC area in the late 90s when Opie and Anthony was on the radio, Anthony had a "Tom Brokenjaw" character. A really great Tom Brokaw impression but saying the most outrageous stuff. Would never fly today but HILARIOUS at the time.

Motherboy_TheBand@reddit
Peter Jennings >> Tom >> Dan.
My dad was sitting on a bench in Central Park one day and heard Peter Jennings walk by having a casual conversation w another person and Dad said it was the most surreal experience.
I recall Dec 1 2004 watching Tom Brokaw’s last anchor signoff on the same day my childhood cat died and I failed a midterm and ken Jennings lost on jeopardy (taped from the day before). I did cry that day.
CrazyHuge2998@reddit
Peter Jennings. I miss him.
Steelerswonsix@reddit
I am answering this not necessarily to cast a vote but to explain why….
Peter Jennings, because for the first 13 years of my life were pre cable, and ABC was the channel that came in the clearest.
As great as I heard Cronkite and Rather were, that cbs affiliate where I lived was real poor reception
Commies-Fan@reddit
ABC all day every day. Always my go to growing up. CBS & NBC could suck a fat one!

I grew up with Dan Rather, probably because my Dad grew up with Cronkite - I’ve been a CBS news person by default since then, which is ending with the new direction since they were bought. I miss when the media was more independent and wealthy people didn’t buy up everything

Depended on the night and who was covering what, but we watched the news every night.
But one of my favorite stories is from when I was 16 or so- I was in Manhattan with 2 friends one night, and we walked past a very familiar man standing waiting for his car. One of my friends very excitedly started saying “oh my God, it’s Tom Brokoff! It’s Tom Brokoff! Oh my god, Mr. Brokoff my family watches you every night! I can’t believe it, it’s Tom Brokoff!” & the lovely gentleman in his beautiful coat, scarf, and gloves graciously smiled, blushed a tiny bit, waved and chuckled, & said “You kids have a good night! Be safe out there!” I hung back a beat, stepped a little closer and quietly said “Thank you, Mr. Koppel.” & he winked it me. That Ted Koppel is a class act.

Peter Jennings because we watched the local ABC affiliate. In fairness there wasn’t much to watch on CBS in the ‘90s unless you were a 50-plus who liked “Murder, She Wrote” or “Matlock.”

I’m a Peter Jennings guy.
When 9/11 happened, I was a teenage runaway, living with some out-of-state folks who took me in.
I’d fled a white nationalist cult, and had been quite sheltered, so I was still coming to grips with the secular world.
I didn’t know what to make of the attacks on 9/11, having had next to no understanding of geopolitics, but I was incredibly anxious about it.
Peter Jennings tirelessly anchored for hours, and was such a comfort to me. I just watched and listened and learned.
He’ll always be my favorite.

I appreciate Mr. Rather more since he left the Evening News. I found him a but odd on that show. Brokaw was so marble mouthed that I found him hard to understand. Ironically, the best American news anchor for me was the Canadian, Mr. Jennings.

What the hell happened. They may have been biased but were not bought and sold like gummy bears like our current “journalists”. I remember believing what these guys said most of the time. Cronkite was the king these three were the prince trinity. Brooke was my guy. But respected the other 2 as well. This is when we started to go off the rails.
If they were dishonest they were good enough to act like they were not.

1984 here. It was Peter Jennings all the way. The others were acceptable if there were some circumstance making it impossible for us to hear from our main guy, Peter; we didn’t hate or doubt them. Just like a light beer 🍻; they were all a different flavor of the same thing.. I don’t really watch national news on TV now, but I really thought all were very good and had a presence of respectability.. not making a comment now; but I think aside from the ‘newscaster’ most on the news are opinion related.. which would be fine, if they weren’t allowed to lie :(
