Best - people who trade second hand parts with each other, we are like adhd-riddled MacGyver monkeys and treat each other like family.
Worst - obnoxious assholes. They can be found anywhere and everywhere
"Sir, I've heard a few complaints about a guy with a loud muffler revving his engine in the neighborhood."
"Oh, that couldn't be me, officer. I don't have a muffler."
There's a level where it's just obnoxious and actually hurts your ears. There's a nice in between where the car's sound has presence, but isn't overbearing.
Best - They like cars, enjoy helping people who don't and are excited when other people like cars too
Worst - They have strong opinions about cars, do not care about how their words or cars affect others and gatekeep their interest to feel more important.
I ran into both types at a cars and coffee the other day.
First guy I spoke to told me that my Mustang was more screen than car and that Ford hasn’t built a real Mustang since 2007.
Later in the morning I was chatting with another Mustang driver. She thought my car was cool and wanted to take it for a spin before I went home. We exchanged numbers and she offered to let me use her dad’s lift whenever I needed it if I agreed to help her out with her temperamental carburetor.
Then I lost traction doing a pull out of the parking lot and only murdered a whole family of 4. There are worse ways to spend a Sunday morning.
Worst- they like old air cooled VW beetles (too crude)
Best- they like well built, reliable cars like many things made in Japan.
I have an old BMW, but I’m not a bmw guy and just like the 1970s straight forward mechanics.
I also despise mechanically incompetent car guys who neglect their rigs. I do all my own work.
Bingo.
I run a car-related YouTube page. In general I try to be helpful and teach folks and always stress that my way is not always the best/only way to do it.
But I still run into folks who’s sole directive seems to be to one-up everyone. They insist on being the first, or their method is the best and right way to do anything. It’s really off-putting when folks are genuinely trying to learn and share knowledge and others strive to prove their superiority without actually providing any meaningful advice.
Best: The ones who can appreciate a car for what it is, no matter if it is a stock survivor or an insane custom build. These people are usually welcoming towards newcomers and people with different interests.
Worst: The complete opposite.
Worst: ignore me when I give them a wave or thumbs up in traffic
Better: wave back at me and floor it, rev it, or ask me for my contact info while in traffic.
Best: guys who will do everything in the “better” category above, even if their car is a lot nicer and worth a lot more than yours, or is way faster. When I had my BRZ, getting waved at and complimented by dudes driving R35s, mk5 supras, etc. was the craziest feeling.
Worst: Car guys like are infatuated with a niche car (Corvette and Porsche people come to mind). And had ZERO interest outside of that particular car.
Best: People who like to hear about your car and ask questions no matter what your drive or how much more expensive their car is. A Ferrari guy who is engaged in hearing about your Miata.
My friend has a heavily modified Datsun 510. It's a full on race car he uses for autocross. The Corvette guys get annoyed that his piece of shit is allowed in their club sponsored events. They're more annoyed when he sets top time of the day.
I watched a Honda Fit kick the shit out of some dick in a hellcat at an AutoX event. Absolute legend, hellcat dude was going on and on about slow 6 and 4 cylinders, 707hp, etc etc.
Best: Guys who show true enthusiasm for all cars and help anyone who needs.
Worst: Guys who are so tribal about their preferred brand and instead of helping, they criticize everyone else.
Worst- guys that judge cars they have never driven or been inside, tell you about it.
Runners up- LS swap guys. Stat sheet guys. Influencers in supercars. Single brand worshippers.
Best- Just happy to be here guys, non judgemental and accepting. Runners up- Wrenchers. Younger guys excited about their own cars, whatever they are.
Best. The one that can appreciate a good car even if it's not their style. They're usually easy to talk to, friendly and don't mind a bunch of questions from someone who doesn't know stuff.
The worst is the one who thinks their way is the only way. If you're not into JDM or offroading or whatever they like, then you're trash.
You're right - Ive sinned before in this regards.
I guess ribbing is fine, I've done it, but if somebody doesn't wanna hang with you cause of your car you're better off.
Best: the people that actually drive their cars as intended, yet still look after them
Worst: the people who are afraid to drive their cars for value reasons.
Best: People who actually have a passion toward cars, loves detailing and taking care of them, and is excited about new technology
Worst: People who just like to drive, is an adrenaline junky and sees cars as a toy to obtain adrenaline or fulfill insecurity
Best: people that actually appreciate the act of driving and have an interest in auto mechanics.
Worst: people that only view driving as a means of getting from point a to point b and have no interest in learning how a vehicle actually works.
Back when I worked for muscle car magazines, we were doing photography a feature on [a '69 Mustang CJ](https://imgur.com/a/yn0Cs0F). What I remember most clearly was the owner, a Boston cop, at one point saying, "with all due respect guys, don't touch the car." Me and my editor looked at each other, wrapped up the shoot and got the fuck out of there. When we got in the van, he turned to me and said, "bet you $5 he goes home and tunes up his wife."
Best - the chill guys who like all kinds of cars and just want people to enjoy what they like in peace.
Worst - militant EV people who see ICE cars as something to be eradicated - and always seem to get incredibly defensive, if not outright indignant and combative should you dare to say EVs just aren't your thing.
Best - just likes cars or anything with a motor, maybe some better than others but knows that’s okay because people have preferences
Worst - bullies and gatekeeps “you’re not a car guy if you don’t have a manual/500+hp/ if you drive x car” you know what I mean, the ones who thing wide open throttle and cutting through traffic endangering others is what this community is about
Best: the ones who are more into the mechanicals and using tools than the superficial stuff.
Worst: tie between brodozer douchebags and fuckwads who are superficial.
Best - Honestly probably the old heads who just want to show off their cars at a local show, even those who have a plaque saying their Corvette is 1 of 2 that’s blue and tan and have a special option. Yeah it’s silly, but they’re legitimately happy about what they have. More enthusiasts should just strive to be happy.
Worst - The dangerous idiots participating in “takeovers”
Who am I? - I’ve just got a stock Golf GTI and quite like it.
Best - "You want to drive or just ride?", before showing you how fast their immaculately kept supercar is on the nearest freeway on-ramp, and they chat you up about how the VW R32 you just passed is really good value for money.
Worst - "My __ is way better than that shitbox" while walking by a normal car guy's ride parked at a show and shine.
Best: the ones who realize that car enthusiasm and car dependency are different - and want to be enthusiasts while striving to reduce society’s over-dependence on cars. Also, track/autocross guys.
Worst: the ones who conflate car enthusiasm and car dependence and get irrationally upset by good urban design, protected cycle infrastructure, managed bus lanes, trolleys/trains, car-free zones, daylighting laws, paid parking, road diets, etc. None of that stuff makes your life as a car enthusiast any worse in any way whatsoever.
I agree with you on all points except the automakers pushing SUVs. They wouldn't push those vehicles if the general consumer trends didn't support them. The buying trends have been pushing towards having roomier, bigger SUVs for a while now and the automakers are just adapting to that trend. In a lot of europe people still drive hatchbacks and sedans at higher rates so it's also just an issue in North America.
No arguments about the infotainment bullshit though. I'm glad that there have been a couple automakers who have made a commitment to ensuring that there are still physical controls in new cars. I will never buy a car that only has touch screen controls. I'm fine with having a touch screen for android auto/carplay purposes, but the moment I have to use the touch screen for HVAC or anything else it's an immediate no.
Automakers absolutely influence consumer preference, specifically with crossovers and car size in general.
I love and support good environmental standards. Through the 90s and into the early 00s with broad-scope emissions reduction equipment requirements phasing in (EFI, OBD, catalytic converters, etc), cars were getting smaller and more efficient; shit was on a good trajectory, and the market was pretty naturally balanced. Sedans and coupes dominated, pickups made up a consistent portion of the market, and there was some SUVs and very few crossovers on the fringes. Had stuff continued on this trajectory and broad-spectrum environmental regs (more similar to EURO7) been applied, the majority of new EVs would be small sedans/hatches.
But CAFE standards have been a fucking dumpster fire since then. The reducing requirements for larger classes of vehicles - without setting a cap on sales of those larger vehicles or requiring different licensure - makes those vehicles easier to design/build “lazily”.
Example: a sedan - or more specifically its wagon counterpart - and a crossover have essentially identical space/utility. But the sedan/wagon would literally have to be built to a stricter environmental standard, whereas the crossover does not. The crossover therefore costs the same or often less to build - and it appears bigger, so they can justify upping the price compared to that sedan/wagon too! Sprinkle some marketing in, push the crossover over the sedan, brand the SUV as a premium option over the crossover, then just cancel the wagon entirely and you’re off to the races!
And wouldn’t you know it - wagons and minivans are effectively dead, and automakers have been pushing crossovers and SUVs HARD. And for them it’s been working; crossovers and SUVs now make up a huge portion of total sales. And of course average vehicle prices have soared; they used to track to inflation but they’ve recently stopped doing that. And every new EV is now a fucking crossover because “that’s what the market wants” - even though the vehicle class doesn’t really matter for EVs.
And because vehicles are getting bigger on average, small vehicles are now unfairly considered unsafe. So now you’re burning the cigarette from both ends - and even small vehicles have to get bigger to keep up with “the trends”.
Sorry for the rant, but I want to clarify - crossovers and SUVs are a quintessential cynical marketing exercise.
Best: Do research, apply critical thinking, explore, put in the wrench time, and don't brag about it to everyone.
Worst: Join a forum just to ask what is the best exhaust to buy so they can get it and brag to their friends. Then come back and ask how to make 500whp in their WRX and argue with you when they don't like the answer.
I think I'm the polar opposite of that interest, but I appreciate it and love how it's making performance in cars cheaper and cheaper as innovations are made. I've driven supercars and Tesla Plaids. They all left me underwhelmed. Yes, they are fast, but that's about it. However, I'm a drifter and I find driving a car at the limits of grip and roaring through corners to be absolutely more fun than high grip or quiet cars. The ideal car for me is something like a GR86 with a V8 or a turbo engine with tons of turbo sounds.
Best - people who appreciate cars for the engineering, design, fun, etc. They get it.
Worst - the brand bros who think what they have is best and everything else is shit.
you have legit car guys and then you have fan boys.
fan boys suck. like you get a certain brand and feel like you have to hate on everything else because its not what you're into.
chevy vs ford, cummins vs duramax, etc. its just dumb.
Best: just enthusiastic, non-judgmental, willing to learn
Worst: only likes a specific sub-interest, talks shit about other sub-interests, thinks they know everything
Also worst: extreme negative camber people 😜 (see me being hypocritical? That’s a joke. But also I cannot see the appeal of making your car worse in every way in pursuit of a debatable aesthetic.)
Best: Those who can appreciate any car for what it is, whether it's a Ferrari or a Toyota.
Worst: Status chasing douchebags who proudly announce their car's brand as if we're impressed.
Best: the rich old guys that don’t give AF and are just happy to be out of the house, because they’ll just throw you the keys while they’re talking to someone.
Worst: The gatekeeper guys that ask you a bunch of specific questions trying to gauge your car knowledge and then become very dismissive when you don’t meet their standards.
Best - people who let others enjoy what they enjoy without judging or belittling.
Worst - people who think their opinion is the only correct one, and snobs.
Generally true for all walks of life tbh.
best - the ones that help others and admire many cars for their quirks
worst - loud backfire tune hahah
me - don't know what the hell i'm talking about but love cars
Idk what type I am. I have a wrx hatch (with an invidia N1 but stock cat), an e36 and a 911. I don’t vape, drift or know every single PTS color. I just like what I like.
Worst car guys? Dudes with pop & bang tunes are up there.
Bad - guys who think if your not scraping your underbody and destroying your exhaust, you aint lowered enough. Anything not slammed is monster truck height.
