$48k for a Civic is bonkers, just crazy

It’s 2026. That’s just what cars cost now

In 2018 I bought a BRZ tS and a year later my parents got a CTR for 1k less otd. If you compare the prices of the 2025 CTR and BRZ tS, the CTR is now $10k more than the tS.

I know this is a while ago, but look at inflation for the United States. It might shock you what the type r used to go for compared to what it is right now. [https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/2018?amount=38000](https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/2018?amount=38000)

Idk, its main competitors (Elantra N, GTI, GR Corolla) cost $36-39k
View on Reddit #75268593

mastawyrm@reddit

Gti? The type r is faster even than the golf r. Gti is more of an si competitor. And you get what you pay for with the Elantra, ctr isn't likely to explode before first oil change
View on Reddit #75269965

RhymeGrime@reddit

The N engine has been around for a decade now... They're proven to be very reliable.
View on Reddit #75288622

mastawyrm@reddit

lol yeah...recalled so many times, they gotta be fixed by now right?
View on Reddit #75289834

handymanshandle@reddit

I believe the only major mechanical recall that the gas Hyundai N cars have had were for high pressure fuel pumps and incorrectly installed clutches on some *early* Elantra Ns. Otherwise, these seem to be as good as anything else in the segment for reliability. Truth of the matter is that you kinda have to pigeonhole yourself into a proper unreliable sport compact nowadays. Most of them are daily driver reliable and get daily driver miles.
View on Reddit #75302020

mastawyrm@reddit

It wasn't specifically the N that got recalled but millions of Theta IIs. It's like, most of the turbo v6s from toyota got recalled but for some reason not the hybrids like my tundra. It's literally the same engine though so no way I'm keeping it past warranty
View on Reddit #75314439

lxs0713@reddit

Yeah I feel like nowadays every brand is about as reliable as any other brand. It's not like Honda and Toyota are immune to engine problems either. Just pick what you like
View on Reddit #75303128

That’s pretty optimistic OTD pricing for a GR Corolla.

GRCs are going at or below sticker at this point.
View on Reddit #75275238

So are Type Rs and their price is basically the same if you get the premium trim GRC (there's actually no base/core trims even for sale near me)

Fair, I was looking at MSRP
View on Reddit #75270550

XSC@reddit

No heated seats too. I know it is a performance car but so many manufacturers include that in bucket seats these days. At 48k it is ridiculous and we all know it is kept that way because of the Type S.

WarCrimeGaming@reddit

Nitpick of mine, no rear seat air vents either.

View on Reddit #75269458

teggyteggy@reddit

I hate that there just isn't a decent four-seater Japanese option. You get better value with the Germans. I'd love a Japanese 440i GC. The Lexus IS is too small. The TLX's rear seats are too small, too heavy, poor fuel economy, and it has a touchpad infotainment... The new RWD Mazda 6 with their new i6 + mild hybrid would be perfect. Not as performant, but nicer interior than a Camry or Civic would be nice
View on Reddit #75288866

Yeah they really should have given the 86 rear seat vents IMO, huge missed opportunity for growing families /s

View on Reddit #75426032

View on Reddit #75445625

No, at least not a legit system. It uses any rolling resistance on a tire to let you know that you might have a low psi tire. Sometimes it doesn't even work.
View on Reddit #75461796

jhowlett@reddit

I think I've heard no adjustable lumbar either? I don't have a "bad" back and I'm not that old, but lumbar in a car seat is pretty much a must these days.

View on Reddit #75273725

If there was any possibility to buy one without ADM I would try to. When I needed a new commuter/daily local Honda dealers wanted $3k ADM on the Si.
View on Reddit #75274429

Ya that’s why I got the GR Corolla. Honda dealers are out of their minds.  I did test drive a FL5 at Carmax though. The seats are probably the best sporty seats I’ve ever been in. Wish my Lotus had them in it

View on Reddit #75269385

That's true honestly with how infrequent their driven might as well not even include the engine they should start shipping them out as coffee tables with the option to install later wouldn't want to hurt the investment value on a massed produced supercar lol

HalfFrozenSpeedos@reddit

Just ship it in a weather proof, hermetically sealed climate controlled display case that you can either have slotted in your 1000 sq metre lounge as a centre piece or have installed as centre piece in your garden estate as a talking point Literally turn them into collectible toys to be kept sealed in the original packaging

Exactly! Isn't the Civil supposed to be the in the same segment as a Corolla? Just like Accord is equal to the Camry. Paying 50k for a Corolla is nuts. At the point if you aim is a fun manual trans. car get a Miata, hell even a GR Yaris is seems better righ about now.

View on Reddit #77960904

I've really wanted a Type R for years, ever since the FK8 days, but lately the Elantra N is looking more and more reasonable as Honda keeps raising the price of this, and good luck finding a dealer who isn't a pos adding markups for no reason.
View on Reddit #75266181

No_Percentage_4570@reddit

Mark ups or dealer added accessories that you must take. Expect to pay atleast 8-10 k above msrp.
View on Reddit #77935879

chadwicke619@reddit

Listen, I’m going to get downvoted to hell, but as someone who owns a 2021 FK8, it is worth every penny and absolutely lives up to the hype. Take your time and find a good deal - no car is worth it with a huge markup. At MSRP, though, the CTR is absolutely worth it, even after this markup. No matter what anyone says, there’s nothing that feels like it at that price point.
View on Reddit #75413522

tagman375@reddit

I just don’t understand why anyone would pay 50k+ for a fucking civic. That’s mustang GT, hell almost gently used dark horse money, modestly used ZL1 or RS3.
View on Reddit #75268596

Successful_Ad_9707@reddit

While it's expensive, it's way more than a "fucking civic" it regularly punches above it's weight and is an excellent drivers car. Yes, the Dark Horse is also an amazing car, but very few people would cross shopping them. The backseat is nonexistent, it's not great in snow and gets worse fuel economy. Probably higher insurance as well. Not to mention the price.
View on Reddit #75360906

Bonerchill@reddit

The Mustang GT is a significantly less-resolved driver’s car, and is less sharp. I wouldn’t be in the market for a Mustang if I was in the market for a CTR, but if I was in the market for a CTR I’d probably buy a nice, low-mile E36 M3 and S54 swap it instead. Much better car that way.
View on Reddit #75271521

tagman375@reddit

Have you driven a Dark Horse? They will out handle and out run a CTR any day of the week. They’re extremely competitive in time attacks.

A dark horse costs almost $20k more. Its price closer to a LT1 C8 than the type r.

View on Reddit #75360691

Comparing a new car to used car in prices is wild. Yea, I can buy a lot of used cars cheaper than new ones for better stats. I can buy used corvettes for cheap, too!
View on Reddit #75278150

Bonerchill@reddit

I will never own a new car. I don’t like the purchasing experience, I don’t like financing, I don’t like depreciation. Being the first owner means nothing to me. The only semi-new vehicle I’ve purchased (less than one year old, less than 10k miles) was $15k cheaper than its new purchase price.
View on Reddit #75284584

Bonerchill@reddit

They have nothing I like, and I do not care about ultimate capability on the street and never will. Street-legal track cars or track-capable street cars are always compromised on both. I care about the entirety of the experience and a Dark Horse provides exactly nothing I want in a car. It is too heavy, too wide, too long, doesn’t have a big enough greenhouse, has too much grip, has too little sidewall, too loud, lacks steering feel, dash sucks, etc. It’s like recommending someone who wears flip-flops try insulated Timberlands.
View on Reddit #75274539

roman_maverik@reddit

I’d gladly take a Civic Type R over a standard issue Mustang GT, as the Civic is straight up a better performing car. Dark Horse vs CTR gets a little harder, but the demographics of people that are buying them are so different that it’s not really a business case. I’d still probably go with the CTR though
View on Reddit #75279881

SaigaExpress@reddit

There have been multiple dealers posting their type r’s for msrp on the type r subreddit this week. I just bought one, always said if i could get one for around msrp id do it, yeah its a civic but it really is t. I love it
View on Reddit #75274889

I have had both, different types of drives, fun in different ways. 4doors vs 2 doors, ect. Hated the MT82 transmission though.
View on Reddit #75272110

tagman375@reddit

At least if you step up to dark horse, you get a tremec instead of the mt82. If it were me though, I’d get an auto any day of the week. When you’re on the track, it matters, but I understand a majority in this sub don’t take their car to the track.
View on Reddit #75272299

withsexyresults@reddit

What’s wrong with using manual on the track? The bigger issue I see is mustang is like 600lbs heavier which means it’ll eat tires and brakes
View on Reddit #75273833

pfohl@reddit

you can put a car seat in a CTR and have it accessible
View on Reddit #75273767

stoned-autistic-dude@reddit

People don’t usually cross-shop V8 coupes with 4-door sports sedans. Someone who needs room for car seats isn’t going to get a Mustang. Like, use your head for a second. Not everyone is single or married without kids, and I say this as someone who is married without kids.
View on Reddit #75273594

handymanshandle@reddit

And that's exactly why I didn't even consider a Type R. Cool car for sure, but $48k and no heated seats? That's damn near BMW or Mercedes-level of nickel and diming you just to get you int an Integra. That and my (at the time) local Honda dealer is absolute garbage. I wasn't about to fight a dealership over a manual Civic hatchback, so I went to a dealership that wasn't gonna fight over a manual Hyundai.
View on Reddit #75274342

kb3_fk8@reddit

I have 3 vehicles in my fleet north of $100k and I have never touched the seat heater button 🤣. Why would I want swamp ass while driving? The heater is fine but never use that either. Maybe did you consider the climate of the purchaser? I’d take AC seats all day long though.

I mean, they just announced the 2026 model in January of 2026, so I’m not sure why you would have ever been confident a 2026 was coming when they long ago announced it being discontinued in both Europe and Japan.
View on Reddit #75412968

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit

Maybe common sense that vehicles can be discontinued in other markets and not be discontinued in the NA one? The BRZ was discontinued for Europe and Japan as well but it’s still sold in the states.
View on Reddit #75415102

chadwicke619@reddit

I mean, that seems like a super weird thing to file under “common sense”, but ok. Generally, cars for a calendar year get announced and start arriving in late summer or fall of the previous calendar year, yet with the CTR it was radio silence until this month. I know you seem to have ignored this fact in your reply, but combined with the nigh global discontinue, this is why many, many people thought it was being discontinued in the US. After reading your reply though, it’s clear that you weren’t really confused and were actually making the statement that you think nobody thought it was being discontinued in the US, which just demonstrates how completely out of the loop you are/were. Weird hill to die on, but everyone gets their jollies in different ways!
View on Reddit #75450374

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit

Seems like you are the one who is out of the loop if you somehow thought that they would discontinue the CTR but continue to offer the Integra Type S which was already announced as being continued. There is no reason for Honda to discontinue the more popular model of the two and not the other. But hey you seem like you’re not all completely there either.
View on Reddit #75477248

Based on things like very little word from Honda and that it's not longer being sold in Japan and Europe, most assumed that 2025 would be it.

The writer seems coming from Europe. In Europe, you can't buy CTR anymore due to very strict local emission rule Euro 7. However, it still doesn't affect most world, and I think we would see these fun models staying longer in America after any local emission rule is removed.
View on Reddit #75267197

While the CTR was due to emissions, many models that have stopped being sold have also been for other measures (the GR86 for not having speed assist/auto lanekeep/auto brake/etc, the boxster for not complying with cyber security rules etc).

I think the Miata actually also needs to be reworked for Japan's noise regulations, it's like 2 dB too loud I think.

i feel like the people worried about the hybrid stealing SI sales are not in the loop, no one buys an SI for straight line power, it's for the lsd, manual, and red accent seats. hybrid doesn't have any of those. If you decide the hybrid over the SI then you were never going to get the Si in the first place.

There’s been much discourse on if there would be a 2026. Honda is still shipping 2025s to the US and just officially announced a 2026 which normally would’ve happened months ago. This combined with the discontinuation of the car in Japan and Europe had many (myself included) thinking 2025 would be the end. I am genuinely surprised they’re going to continue making the car in Japan only for the US market. 🤷‍♂️

I do think it highlights a bit of a disconnect between the Civic Type R's buyer demographic versus... honestly, most other sport compacts. Lots of Type R owners I've seen both here and in person have multiple cars, and it's not uncommon to see these being used as weekend cars. It's much easier to find a low mileage FK8 or FL5 Type R than it is to find a low mileage Elantra N or Golf R (or insert any sport compact, honestly) for this reason. On the flip side, a lot of people I see with pretty much anything else (the aforementioned EN and Golfs, WRX, GR Corolla, 86, you get the point) have one either as a daily or as a car that still sees solid mileage. This is where I personally fit in and it's also where you see most of the "too expensive" discussion come from. For someone like me, it's asinine to consider a $50k Honda Civic when my Elantra is most of that performance and a solid amount of the practicality for much less, but when you have people with nice garages who have always lusted after a Type R...

Well yea, one of the main points of the article is that there is another price increase. $48k is a lot of money for a car, especially when something like an Elantra N is $12k less. Why wouldnt we discuss price?

Cuz it’s just inflation. 48k is the new 38k

I drove to Ottawa, ON a few months ago not know what to expect in terms of what cars I'd see. At the time I lived in North Alabama, where Civic Type Rs aren't far off from being normal cars there (not making fun of them, I promise!) and I was stunned to not see a single one. Learning that Honda allocates like three of them a year really highlighted to me why I saw 4 Elantra Ns driving through Toronto on the 401 and why Golf Rs are normal cars in Ottawa.

The first model year for the new type r I believe there was 14 allocated to us.... For the whole country. Like what the actual fuck Honda. I still haven't seen one on the road, I live in Calgary, which has a population of 1.5 million for the general area. I've seen more Chirons or F40s haha.

Canada gets basically zero CTRs. They are completely unobtainable.

Ugh I know. I'm just hopeful they continue the run long enough that we'll actually get some. It's infuriating, I drive a BMW and have a $75 000 truck, went into my local dealer last year asking about getting one and got laughed at. Like mf, it's a civic. They said unless I'm willing to pay $67k for a "demo" one then it's not happening, the salesmen just buy them and resell them to the dealer with 50km on them. I've had slightly better luck with Acura, they could get me one, even offered me a test drive on one they had but I just can't stomach 61k for a prettier civic.

Please tell me there will be some changes.. The FK8 had a refresh during its run.

>That’s $1000 more than the 2025 model and just over $4000 more than when this generation first went on sale in 2023. This is the sort of thing I talk about. Prices continue to soar to places where new is further and further out of reach. Not that taking home pre-owned with someone else paying the depreciation is a bad thing. That however, is not a new car.

Such a fun and special car. Having owned the 2021 FK8, can’t say a part of me doesn’t miss the Type R. But life is better for me with a Golf R. I’m not too old but I’m not that young anymore and the Golf R hits all the things I need. Congrats to those still in the market for one. The car really is worth its hype.

Civic R looks cooler than Integra they should just get rid of Acura and let u option the fuck out of your Honda

Americans like to think Acura is a “better” car than Honda.

I think it’s hard to argue they aren’t “better”, it’s if Acura is worth the extra money over a Honda that most people disagree with.

2026 Type R? Honda really said ‘we’re not done yet.’ Inject it straight into my veins.
